Debating on rooting and upgrading - Samsung Galaxy S Blaze 4G

Ok so im looking to root my blaze on stock 2.3.6, but im being hesitant now because ive previously soft bricked it. Im fairly certain the reason it soft bricked was cause i didnt do a flash to factory default before i tryed to downgrade the firmware in an attempt to get kies to recognize my phone the last time. Now my question is not only how do i go about rooting it and upgrading the firmware from 2.3.6 gb to 4.0.4 ics without bricking it. Oh and i didnt personally restore the phone from soft bricking, someone else did it for me, but he wont do the updating cause hes already bricked a phone doing it.

Once you have your phone rooted with a custom recovery, just grab any ROM from the dev section and flash. No need to update via kies.

The thing is i dont have alot of experience doing it, im wary of bricking it again. I think the last phone i did anything like this with was actually g1 on 1.6, lol. And id also like an opinion or 2 on which rom to go for if i do install one,

If you do anything wrong, you'll jsut soft brick it. Blaze is very hard to brick. Follow the instructions on the (How to Root) and you should be fine. Take your time. Dont rush and ALWAYS make a backup. Ive lost inportant things cuz I goofed. Look into a rom before you flash. as well. decide what you want and go from there. research research

you can upgrade to 4.0.4 by Keis on the Pc. without a risk.

If your completely set on running a rom, you don't need to root. Just use Odin to flash CWM. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591622
Then make a complete backup (nandroid) first thing, and flash whatever you like. I suggest the latest Cyanogenmod nightly (not the stable version, it's old). http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922935
It's very hard to brick this phone, Odin and download mode are your friend, lol.

So i tryed to flsh in clockwork mod nd go figure i soft bricked the phone

once it gets to nand write start it fails and i cant seem to flash it back to stock

I have always been able to recover my phone following the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591601
But you MUST do them exactly as written.
Once you do this you will be back to Gingerbread. The only way to upgrade from this build is a ROM. You will no longer be able to use KIES to upgrade.

I did exactly as it said multiple times, but it keeps failing after nand write start

You may want to read through this thread. Also, anytime you are running ODIN always double check to make sure re-partition is not checked. I forget when it happens but when either adding the PDA or the PIT file it will re-check itself.
Forgot Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1834059&highlight=blaze+hard+brick

Both those links should have the tips you need. If you can access download mode it's only soft bricked. It could be something like a bad download or something else flaky.

Your able to get into recovery? So as i said boot into recovery wipe data/cache 3 times then reboot. If still no go flash the stock tar with odin again and reroot. You could also try just flashing the stock recovery.tar and boot into it. Then wipe data, and cache. Then reboot

k tried the data/cache 3 times each and rebooted and nothing. well how do I put stock tar on my sd card if I cant get my phone on to connect with my pc storage ?
The stock tar you need to put on your pc. And you need to get your phone into download mode. You use odin on you pc with your phone in download mode. To flash the stock recovery tar. To be honest you need to just use odin to reflash the stock tar. Again. Go to the thread woth the stock tar and follow the instructions again
haha duh on my part I was just so scared that I panicked but its downloading now and im going to try and flash back to stock when it is done. thanks for your patience/help slvwrx.....upon more research I think I got a bad recovery tar bc I cant open it its just a white page with a folded corner and I think I saw someone with this problem in the thread and said you have to extract zip
any other ideas ?
anyone get tar files from another site because when I try to open mine they all say cannot open file does not seem to be a valid archive.
You cannot be serious with these questions? You don't open the tar file you put it in Odin. You really need to put some effort into researching what you are trying to do with your phone. Your lack of prior research is why you are having problems. Not trying to be an ahole but you really need to READ everything in these forums before you try to do anything to your phone or you seriously risk bricking it and not being able to recover it. It is nearly impossible to brick these phones but if you have not done the requisite research here then you will end up in essence with a brick because you have no clue how to recover it from your own mistakes. I read these forums for a solid week before I even connected my phone to my laptop and I am an IT Engineer but that doesn't make me an Android expert so I learned from the awesome people here that know more than I and are freely willing to share their knowledge. Take my word for it any/all information you would ever need to fix your phone is all right here for the reading courtesy of the great devs and enthusiasts here on the site.

any criticism is good criticism to me thanks for giving me the cold hard facts and to be truthful I did jump into this early coming from an iphone 4 and all the ones before that and jailbreaking them I thought it'd be easy and it was I just 2nd guess myself all the time. my mistake was following the vid a ruebarb posted in the thread and I followed it to a T .it wasnt till he updated his video and said that his method was for ''already'' rooted users so after getting konane's stock tar flashed in odin I was back to stock re-did the 2.3.6 method got it done stayed stock rooted for 2 days then just about 30 mins ago I went head and jumped on RED SONIA!
again thanks for your input and to care enough to set a noob stright
also Cdshep pretty much found the problem after having a personal chat with me he saw what I was trying to say I'm just not really good with wording or spelling I just recently winged myself of of concerta(ADHD pills) and so my mind moves faster than I can type or right and I confuse myself but its better than the life of a zombie!

[Q] big problem with sidekick

bought sidekick sght839 from friend and it worked fine b4 doing reset. now, when it starts, the tutorial comes up on home screen and can`t press arrow to proceed to next page. firmware 2.2.1-kernal 2.6.32.9-build froyo uvkj2. the wireless works and connects to internet fine. can`t use phone as 456 keys dont work and worked b4. can change settings OK. have rooted it. still doesnt want to work as b4. am new here so if someone could let me know if they have any ideas, I would appreciate it. am also new to android phones. I cant find heimdall file to download. Know how to set phone to download and use Odin but cant find proper files online.
Use the search bar on XDA to search for the kj2 stock Odin files, follow the directions given closely, download them, make sure you have the correct drivers so that Odin recognizes your phone, then boot into download mode using the method found in the forums, just do a quick search for download mode. You should have everything operational after download from Odin is finished, hope this helps

trouble installing odin
I have tried numerous times to install Odin but all I get is unregistered device...that is as far as it goes. Dont know how to get around that. 456 keys also work then dont work otherwise the phone works fine as far as internet and making calls goes. Crazy device!
Try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350060&highlight=heimdall
I soft-bricked my phone and this was the only method that worked.
if you havent reflashed your firmware yet, i have a suggestion. install clockworkmod recovery. there is a thread in the sk4g development section of this website. the title is something like cwm for the sk4g. enjoy! so look for that and follow the instructions in the first post of that thread. make sure you grab the update.zip file from that thread and do not flash cwm through rom manager. trust me on this. after you have followed the instructions in that thread, boot into cwm (boot into stock recovery and select reinstall packages. you should then boot into cwm recovery), select advanced, and then select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if any of the problems have been fixed. i did this and it stopped my phone from randomly rebooting every 15 to 30 minutes. it might fix the problems on your device. if not, i would move to the next step, reflashing the firmware. flash the kj2 build and then learn how to remove bloatware. kj2 is less buggy to start with. still buggy, but less buggy than KD1, KG2, or the other version (KI2?). if you reflash firmware, you will need to re-root in order to remove bloatware. removing bloatware is key for optimal performance with the stock firmware. you can also flash a custom rom if you wish. most of the custom roms on this site have minimal bloatware, so if you wish to go that route, bloatware shouldnt be much of an issue. i personally am on the stock firmware and dont suggest flashing roms for someone so new to android. but if you feel confident enough, thats your decision. i also suggest booting into cwm and running fix permissions after removing bloatware. i theorize that removing system apps causes permissions errors similar to registry errors in windows.
some success with sk4g
don`t know how or why but I got frustrated with the phone and threw it in the trash on top of coffee grounds...changed my mind and pulled it out and cleaned it and charged it and...voila...it worked. banged it against the sink a couple times. weird! so, now I am trying to install custom rom and keep running into everification error when I try to flash. 456 buttons still dont work and cant take a video with it but it will probably work better if I can find a work-around for these errors I get. I am on a mission now and I cant give up. Hope someone can help me. I think there may be hope for this thing. Thanks for whatever help I can get.
i told you, install clockworkmod and fix permissions. it will probably fix the problems you are having. if you choose not to listen, thats. your choice. but my advice will probably help you without having to through the pain in the rear of reflashing the firmware. reflashing the firmware itself isnt really that difficult, but once you do it, your back to square one with your device. starting from scratch is the frustrating part. i bricked my phone and had to reflash, and it took me a couple weeks to get the phone where i needed it again. im staying on the stock firmware for this reason.
how does one fix permissions
OK OK dont yell. How do I fix permissions? Newbie on board here so I need a little more help than the rest. I dont necessarily want to do the rom thing myself. Thanks.
copy and paste this into your browser: forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124453 and follow the instructions in the first post. after you have followed those instructions, boot into recovery mode. the stock recovery will apear. scroll down and select reinstall packages. the clockworkmod recovery should boot up. the text in the screen will be orange. scroll down and select advanced. scroll down again and select fix permissions. when it finishes, it will say done. reboot your device and see if you have any of the issues you were having. i am not guaranteeing this will fix the issues, but i think it might. if it doesnt, my next suggestion will be reflashing the stock firmware. but try this and post back when finished and let me know if it works.
sk4g problem
didnt work. did exactly what you said and no go. any other suggestions. it works so well for some things like wifi and calling except 456 buttons on and off. it is funky indeed. thanks for the help also, cant take video or manage photo or use front camera as the left side button to choose options doesnt work either. seems like something is up with the rom. cant install anything from samsung or tmobile as it is an unregistered phone.
were you able to boot into clockworkmod recovery?
boot up
yes I did.
then you need to reflash your firmware. you need odin, you need the samsung vibrant drivers, and you need the firmware files. do a search on odin in the dev thread for this device and you should be able to find everything you need, including instructions.
Have tried that too
have the drivers, have odin and have tried that too. that didnt work as the phone is unregistered and not recognized. it is used and I cant register it.
on your phone, go to settings>about phone and scroll down to where it says baseband version. the last 3 characters under that will say either kd1, kg2, or kj2. if its not kj2, then i have a suggestion for you. but post back and lmk.
phone setting
it is kj2. now what? this is all confusing as it has been updated I believe by previous owner. thanks for your time. i am going to try the odin method again. i first did it on a 64bit puter with windows 7 so i can try it on my 32bit machine. have read that sometimes odin doesnt work well on 64bit. am willing to try anything. will let you know. thanks again. cant get the stock rom download anywhere. will just try flashing custom rom.
you cant odin a custom rom unless the dev makes an odin file, which they usually dont. you have to flash through clockworkmod. you can head over to the dev section and pick from many roms that are listed. follow the developers instructions for flashing very carefully or you will brick your device.
Thanks for advice.
I know I can`t odin a custom rom. I can`t seem to odin anything on this machine. I have cwm and have tried using it to flash a rom but I keep getting everification and such error msgs. Gonna let it sit for awhile and think about this. I have the update.zip file on sdcard but can`t seem to get that to install no matter what I do. Very puzzling deal. Thanks anyway for your help.
do you have android sdk installed on your computer? google it and install it, then try odin again.
got sdk
sdk installed and will try odin again...seems a little more complicated than the last time I tried...will google a bit more on this. Thanks.

You can use the latest SuperOneClick or you can flash a ROM/kernel that comes rooted. The latter of which can be found in the dev section. If you go that route, I highly recommend using one of bhundven's one-clicks to install 2.3.6 with CWM/root/voodoo lagfix. From there you can install a different custom ROM/kernel if you wish.
Or you can click on the first link in my signature and follow the guide.

which superoneclick? the thread said something about modifying it, do you just download it and run or do i have to change something from the x10 options
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=21954884
Look for rooting in this guide.
I also am trying to figure out how to root it. Most guides point to superoneclick, so I downloaded it, although on the shortfuse site there are plenty of complaints saying it is freezing at step 7. I read the guide and it says that since I'm already GB, I can install a rom/kernal combo that will root it in the process. I am wanting to run Valhall black and it doesn't say that a root is necessary in the directions, it just says place the .zip in the root of the SD folder.
Then I read in other places that superoneclick isn't necessary with stock GB, and point to Odin, and then some say Odin isn't necessary and point to "an easier way for stock GB" but then don't say what the easier way is.
The wiki says that one of the ways to root is to install a CWM voodoo lagfix kernel (which is included in Valhalla Black, I think) without needing to root.
Mindboggling
Follow the guide in the first link in my signature. It is very specific! If you have any questions let us know.
Root is necessary. You need to root, then follow the directions regarding SGS Kernel Flasher, then flash Valhalla Black. If you follow the guide you will be good. I tell you the version of SuperOneClick to use. It works. Don't worry about what ever else you read.
Thanks, so far so good. Kernel in progress.
This is for Lumin30
I clicked on your link and followed everything to the T but when it gets to step #7 on the oneclick, it sits an sits (which we wait and wait) but then the oneclick after about 15 minutes of waiting says not responding. Any help on that?
The link I posted? If so, close SuperOneClick and try it again. Make sure you have USB Debugging enabled. Let me know if you have any more problems.
Also, when you plug your phone is does your computer recognize the phone?
That would be the problem. When I plug my phone into the computer it doesnt read it when in debug mode, but if it isnt in debug mode I can as storage.

Open SuperOneClick - assuming you downloaded the version I recommended in the guide.
First thing to try is using a USB port you have not plugged your phone into yet that is directly attached to your computer - meaning no hubs or addon usb boards.
Try that. Let the computer install the drivers. It should say they installed and click Root.
Also - verify what you currently have on your phone before proceeding.
Lastly - you will need to refresh your browser to see my replies
That did it. Thank you so much. But now one last question. How do i find the IMEI to make sure it changed? It said rooted but everythings on my phones looks pretty much the same as it did before I rooted it. An also when it was rooting it said LOG: write failed (errno=14) alot. Does that matter?

Read this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21953587&postcount=1
It will tell you how to find your IMEI and how to back up your EFS folder - which is VERY important. And you can go to Market, download 'Root Checker Basic' to verify you are rooted.
And hit thanks

Thanks for the help. I do have another question. If I want to change ROM's do I just flash them the same way or do I need to do something else first before I flash it? An by the way, the IMEI was still the same. I thought it was suppose to cahnge. Sorry this is my first time ever doing this.

Bionix_Frost_SGS4G
An used the sgs thing to flash
So you were on Bionic Frost? Or tried to flash Bionic Frost? I need to know what you were first on - then what ROM you tried to flash.
Tried to flash
Hehe. Ok. So you tried to flash Bionic Frost - a Froyo based ROM. And what were ROM were you using before you tried to flash Bionic Frost?
Sherbear
You are making me laugh. We will get this fixed. But I need to know what ROM you originally used. Or that can be said - what is the first ROM you flashed? I am assuming it was a GB based ROM but I was to confirm first before we proceed.

Stop being foolish, people.
Root your phone, get clockworkmod, make a backup, and then...
Do not install a rom.
You need to Odin first. That's right. Recover your phone to bone stock. Learn how it works first instead of showing up asking the same dumb questions over and over...
Odin first. Then root it again, get clockworkmod, and restore your backup.
Now, that you know how recovery works, you can start tinkering.
In case you didn't notice (you didn't), there was no development on this phone at all until developers had a way to Odin back to stock. Development started with Odin. Shouldn't you?
Don't wait until you have a problem. Use your head.

Installed New update, soft brick. Need an official signed rom

Anyone know of, or or have a link to a factory rom (hell any rom would do at this point) that I would be able to flash with the stock S3 recovery? Just trying to unbrick my phone. Story of what happened below:
I'm running stock 4.1.1 rooted touchwiz. I wake up this morning to a notification saying I had an update on my phone. Should have definitely waited but without thinking I went ahead and updated, which of course soft bricks? The phone. (boots up, and but hangs at the 4Glte, flash screen)normally this would be an easy fix, I could Odin back to stock or something but I'm down in Mississippi till Monday for training and do not have access to my pc.
I can access the factory recovery on the phone but that's it, have no clue where CWM is. I've tried flashing some backups but the factory recovery says that it's not a signed package or whatever. Anyone have any idea how I can get this sucker booted up and running using just an android tablet?
What about reflashing CWM so I can access my backups? Could I somehow flash CWM with factory recovery?:

first of all you can't flash anything on a stock recovery hence the need of a custom recovery. Second you don't accept the OTA when rooted as it can cause the exact issue that you have. Last there isn't a way to fix your problem via another android device that I know of.
U are going to need a pc and then u will need to download Odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1165122&d=1340993443 and u can get the official software from here on XDA http://hotfile.com/dl/182822657/9f6...WBLK3_381038_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5.html this is the 4.1.1 software. Here is a link to some official pre rooted software http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1984436 all of these software's you can install though Odin just look up here on XDA on how to use Odin and you will be fine once your phone is up and running again then you will need to get you a custom recovery. Then you can access your backups.

He was asking if he can use an android tablet to fix his phone. He doesn't have access to PC at least until Monday it says so in his post. I wasn't even criticizing you at all. Unless he knows someone with a PC in Mississippi or someone here knows how to use one android device to flash something on another android device he sadly will have to wait until he gets home to fix his phone. You didn't do anything to be criticized for trying to help all I did was point out the info that you missed without personally attacking you making it a critique.

hey all, I've been reading , downloading etc for hours trying to get back into my GS3.. i was as usual roaming around and saw a post that said something to this effect "do ya need to get back to stock?" and figured yes i need to so i jumped in with both feet ..i had my boot loader unlocked and for some reason locked the darned thing remembering it was locked before i rooted and then i get the screen that says ie: "System software not authorized ~~~~~~~~~~~~" with a yellow triangle over it with an "!" mark in it..
all would have been ok except the line up of the way to do things was kinda outta line.. after i had locked bootloader "which is the way the GS3 came" i thought. at any rate i am now where i said i was and if i can be helped it would be appreciated.. and no repeated.. next time i'll read their whole line up first.. so help me if ya can and i am game right now for about anything ..
