deleting bloatware... - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Did a search in the GSIII forums and couldn't find what I was looking for, so I am asking here.
I am rooted/unlocked on my GSIII running 4.1.2, and want to delete the bloatware I feel is unnecessary. Is there a way for me to do this without flashing a new ROM or kernel? If so, how, and if not, is there a stable glitch-free stock ROM out there that someone made that already has the bloatware removed?
If not, I will just flash Jelly Beans v.15 and call it a day.

Do you utilize OTAs? If so don't delete bloatware, you won't be able to OTA, freeze the apps. If you don't care about OTAs I use Titanium backup pro to delete system apps.

Ah, ok. This is the first phone I am rooting/unlocking, and until now I have used all the OTA updates. I guess I have to make a choice, and proceed from there. Might as well flash a ROM if I'm not gonna use OTA, right?

I would never take an OTA. Just flash a ROM and be done with it. An OTA has the potential to lock your phone up where you will never be able to flash anything again. The ROMS will give you the same update with a lot of added options without that risk.

You can use Titanium Backup to freeze or uninstall bloat. I recommend freezing, since you can enable something if needed.
Or you can flash CleanROM. No bloat, and very stable.

I believe I found this list on XDA:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqTvctlW89DtdC1qVUlLeVFTV3ZOdUtDclpBdVRQOUE#gid=0

I tried doing this before, using the list from the last post.
I found that the best solution (if you want to keep TouchWiz and all) was CleanROM. Fast, free of bloatware, and not changed too much from stock.

LOVE CleanROM. I tried a few others (Beans, Smooth...) for a few days each, but CleanROM is hands down the best ROM I've ever used. It's my DD and I haven't regretted that decision ever.

I haven't found any hiccups. I've been using it since January.
Don't ask me about kernels, though. Lol. I know enough about rooting to possibly get me into trouble, and I can flash ROMs, but start talking about kernels and I get cross eyed.
Oh, and I flashed Andy Bones' AOSP Theme. I'd had Kinda Crap Mods, but it wasn't compatible with CR6. It may be now. It's like the best of both worlds: CleanROM gives you Touch Wiz, the mods gives you the Vanilla Android look that I prefer (because the colors of the Touch Wiz notification bar are UGLY).

Rooted yet otherwise untouched ROM

Hey guys, I was wondering whether there is a rom out there that has been rooted, but otherwise has had nothing else changed? I like the custom roms and everything, but something somewhere never quite works properly. Any suggestions?

Well, I have the Vodafone crapware on my ROM, so I just want a good stock rom that is rooted. For my old Hero there were a couple around that could be flashed very easily.
I'm using virtuous sensation v1.0.1 and its pretty much the same as stock. Very fast and stable.

Ahh I guess I don't have to start a new thread to ask my question.
All I want is for me to be able to use titanium backup to remove bloatware, rom manager to back things up, and change the pink bootup T-Mobile crap. Will I simply be able to root, add those apps and proceed?
Thanks for the help in advance
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA Premium App
yes, you will be able to root.
1.) s-off
2.) permRoot
you don't need titaniumbackup to uninstall bloatware. simply use the rootexplorer. navigate to system/app and delete that apps you don't want to be on your phone. but don't forget to mount r/w. and before you do so, make a nandroid backup!
How do we perma root without screwing up our WIFI, yet stay with stock ROM? Seems NO ONE has addressed this here on the forum. Suggesting a custom ROM is a bandaid solution.

No where did they mention how to root. Many people are losing their wifi doing the regular method that is in the massive guide, so they wind up going back to stock. It is not guaranteed to mess up wifi, but if it does, you are just unlucky. (As of now).
I would like to know how others are rooting (perm.) without having these issues.
Matt
I think the responses in this thread pretty much sum up why we want a rooted yet otherwise untouched ROM. From my flashing experience in the past I have found it *extremely* difficult to find a ROM where everything just works. Some well meant tweak always ends up causing some bizarre problem somewhere down the line.

[ROM][02.07.12]DS_Mod_1.55.531.3 (Optional Debloat)

Hello Everyone!
This is kinda sorta really late, but here is the flashable, rooted version of the latest stock rom update!
Flashing this will get you to 1.55.531.3, without the trouble of having to gain root permission again. Keep in mind that this rom will maintain everything that a stock rom would have, including the bloats. I will upload a version w/o bloat soon.
Report back if there's any problems!
Download DS_Mod_1.55.531.3 Here
02.07.12: I took out most of the bloatware in the debloated version. Download the debloated version here!
P.S. If flashing this caused your dog to have cancer, I am in no way responsible!
Omg omg omg <3
Does this support the new radio?
Yea, it's based from a device that was at the most recent OTA, with everything that comes with it.
Thanks to Daniel for bringing us forward - It's great to see people releasing all kinds of goodies for us to play with
Can you make a deodexed version? I'm a huge themer.
Do you think it would be a good idea to try flashing this on my non rooted mt4gs? Like putting it on my sd card and getting into recovery?

do you have the new radio already? this ROM was made to run with the new radio, but it will not install the radio. i am curious to see how this runs when people flash it with the old radio... (could run just fine, we've just never had the chance to see it done )
also you could flash the new radio, but this could be a problem if you decide to flash back to an older custom ROM, as people have reported random reboots with the new radio on the older ROMs.

that would be a really cool new way to root! probably won't work, as it likely won't pass the signature check in stock recovery. shouldn't hurt to try, it would probably just not let it flash.
I'll wait for the Bloat-free version.
Or can you just use the Bloater app to remove them?
Just scored this phone for my little brother. The little amount of ROMs in the 4G Slide community surprised me.
I want him to have a full experience so I'm going to flash this ROM, I don't like how every other ROM has things here and there not working - specifically no 1080p video.

Well, this is a zip, not a pd.img, so booting into recovery or fastboot wouldn't work anyways. OP, correct me if I'm wrong, but this is only for people with s-off, root and clockwork mod installed.

Unfortunately, yes. This is for people who are currently s-off who want to go back to the new version of stock without going through the trouble that's described here.
I'm getting constant reboots, not sure if due to the new Radio I flashed, or this ROM.

Try reflashing first. If that doesn't solve the issue, revert back to the original radio. I'm currently using this rom right now and I haven't had a reboot yet. Or maybe it's a YMMV thing

Restoring system app data I would avoid, but to restore user apps use titanium backup. Its free and great if properly used. Just set your filters to make sure you don't include any system apps on your batch backup. And when you restore the apps, I would batch restore the apps and then restore the app data only for apps where you actually need to restore app data.
And don't tell Scott I recommended backing up and restoring.
To the guy scared of borking, don't worry its a good file.

TB Doesnt like this root method. Clear TB data and SuperSU data. Make sure you update binaries in Super SU then set the default permissions to allows allow. Other than that I have no clue. I get root with every app no problem.
Let me guess who rated the thread 2 stars? Hmmmm....

BTW TB works fine here, it acquires root w/o problem.

I know man... Some people are quick to downgrade something when they dont know how to use it. lol
Some peoples kids!
One possible nice addition would be 4in1 power buttons, even if it was hidden somewhere so the wife couldn't accidentally hit it.. The ability to jump to recovery would be nice since it's pissy to do it the hardware "button"/cold way. I know it's stock, and I greatly appreciate it. I have it loaded for my wife, but jumping to recovery from the device without issues, another app, or a tool kit would be nice. Just an idea. Thanks.
Going to check this out, just want something stock and speedy. CM10 was a bit too unstable for me at the moment. Thanks for the ROM!

[Q] why root? flash?

i am new to the one s but not to flashing. i am coming from a galaxy s sprint epic. while i was on that, cm10.1 & 10.2 were great advancements to the stock gb which always seems to take forever for updates. but with this huge leap in smartphone power, do i really need to root & flash? even with all the bloatware that i don't use, the phone is very fast. and i can get two days easily from my battery (which i charge every night so that's not an issue). i used to flash just to have the latest but i think i just want functionality. also, i don't put that much on my phone so 16g should be plenty, even with all the bloatware. not that i wouldn't flash to get better use out of my device but i just don't think i need to. please convince my otherwise.

Once youve been rooted, you cant be without root, regardless of ROM.
There are plenty of benefits in rooting even on stock roms.
Infact, a non-rooted device is like a windows PC with only access to your desktop...

explain why?
why?
i guess i wasn't clear. i know the benefits of root. i've been flashing roms on my last 3 devices. the answers i was trying get were more along the lines of what are the main changes people are making to their stock phones. does all the bloatware inhibit speed or limit space? are there roms or tweeks that people can't live without? or do people unlock, root and flash just because they like to mess with their phones/have the latest even if it doesn't work correctly?

No, it is in General--It's all good--
When I get my Note 2/3 I will probably only root for Nandroids and Titanium BackUp. I think that phone and maybe SGSIV may stand on their own without a need to flash roms. Might be wrong though-- There are still more sweets after Jelly Beans--
Your last question answered your own question. Today's smartphones don't really require root, UNLESS you like tweaking your phone.....which most of us love to do, otherwise we wouldn't be here. You can easily get rid of bloatware with a new launcher. IE: Nova or Apex are my favorites. Just disable and hide them, you'll never see them again. Back in the day people rooted mainly to get the latest OS quicker....these days the newer smartphones already come with the latest OS, so it's all a matter of whether you like tweaking your phone or not. There are still great benefits to rooting, but these days it's more personal preference over flashing the latest OS.
Just my 2 cents.

I can explain it in one word: Control.
I want to be in charge of the device, not letting the device be in charge of me. If you want that you might as well go with apple, who makes good devices with a terrible OS, imo.
Well I will root my htc one s because the latest update to 4.1 is crap. My battery drains so fast. So if I don't find a solution for this I might downgrade back to ics 4.04 or maybe a better custom rom...otherwise I would've kept the rom not rooted. Especialy because now we can disable an app that it is not usefull.

Can't comment on stock but Blackout rom has been good for me.
I root because you can never seem to turn the screen brightness down far enough without root access, that and I don't like being locked out of a file system by manufacturers who don't trust my common sense.
I flash only when a device is older and/or no longer getting updated and something like CM gives me a major improvement.
Even if you want to run a stock ROM, unlocking/rooting (and flashing a custom recovery) enables you to make and restore nandroid backups and use tools like Titanium. It's also makes it easier to repair if you ever run into trouble like boot loops.
