Carbon fibre vinyl wrap. (self mod) - Galaxy S I9000 Accessories

The chrome paint had started to chip off on my mates old phone that he was selling so I decided to wrap it with my left over vinyl wrap. All I did is place a big piece of vinyl wrap over the screen, then used a hairdryer to mould it around the corners. I used a blade to cut around the screen and the back of the frame and finally peeled the excess wrap off.
Here are some pics.

Don't know why these came out so blurry.
Sorry I didn't take any progress pictures. Here's a picture to show how I cut the vinyl Dig with your nails first before using a blade to cut.

Thanks man. I used a non branded vinyl wrap from Ebay (If you want the best quality vinyl wrap, I'd go for the 3M branded ones). This is basically what I used. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/CARBON-FI...arts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item5ae7791258
Be sure the to check the size of the wrap before you buy. :good:

does the carbon vinyl slip when you try to slide it with your thumb?...how the hell did it fit the round edges?...teach me please...thanks

Basically what I did was heat the vinyl with a hairdryer, this allows you to stretch the vinyl however you want so you get a wrinkle free finish. Here's a video to show you how it's done. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMhvU8Dk3CE&feature=youtube_gdata_player
No it doesn't slip off, it's relatively sticky.
I did the same thing on my Xperia Play a couple of days ago.

what if i accidentally touched the sticky part of the vinyl?..will it stick after blowing it with heat?

Yes it will still be sticky. Even I managed to touch the sticky part of the wrap, which didn't harm it at all. Heat actually makes it even stickier.

i'll get my vinyl on saturday...i'll post some pictures of my finished product... wish me luck

No problem mate. I would of disassembled the phone too, but I needed to sell the phone quick so I didn't have the time. Covering the back might be a bit too much IMHO, but it's your phone so I'm not stopping you.

Skinomi Screen Protector

Just got mine in the mail and applied it. Followed the instructions to the letter, and so far I still see streaks/residue behind the cover. The instructions say this will clear up within a few days so I won't pass judgement just yet. If the residue and streaks clear up like they say I would definitely recommend this. I will post back and update!
***Edit**
Forgot to add that as far as I can tell this cover has no effect at all on touch sensitivity.
You get the full skin or just the screen?
I just ordered mine using the get25 promo code to get 25% off. If it's anything like the Zagg skins the streaks will disappear.

The screen was somewhat straight forward and easy, the only complication I would see with installing it on the body is the corners not wanting to apply without some air bubbles.
Wish me luck. ... LOL hope it fits perfect with no bubbles imperfections piss me off

Mine should be here by Friday. Great job how long did it take?
Probably about 30 minutes. I did the screen in the bathroom with high steam from the shower to keep the dust down, and then did the rest in my kitchen. I did use my wifes hairdryer to aid in drying the smaller pieces on the top, bottom and sides. you have to be careful when doing the H shaped part across the back and sides. You adjust the right and completely move the left by accident. I will let everyone know if the micro-bubbles dissipate as advertised and will take additional photos in a couple days.
My screen has cleared up a little bit in the past few hours. Hoping it clears all the way up.
Nicely done slimm13. The micro bubbles will go away if they are anything like Zagg's IS.
It looks did a really great job putting it on. Curious though that the edges aren't fully covered...it leaves those little 't' shaped spaces. The Zagg seems too fully covers the rounded edges...
Thank you guys for the kind words, I think it is far from perfect but serviceable. I was surprised about the corners as well, thought it was odd. I had hoped that there would have been some extra material and I would have cut pieces to fit in said holes.

Those that cover the corners "well" are very easy to rub/peel off that corner as you just take it in and out of pocket. (I'd like to take a picture of my current phone to show you what I'm talking about.... it's ugly... but that gotta wait till my Nexus One arrives... ) Next time I'm getting these skins I'd look for the T-shaped ones with a hole at that pesky corner.

Very nice. Saw a friend do this with his iPhone 4. Guess not everyone likes the glass back, who knew.
Same thing I´ve done
Indeed, I did it a bit more precisely
Woah, I'm really impressed by both your efforts. I didn't even think of doing this, but now...... I think I might look into it. Any tips for anything that could save me trouble down the track?
And Vln_Thomas: Did you measure out a piece beforehand and then stick it on or did you stick it on and then cut?
EDIT: Although, now that I think about it, I don't even know where I'd get carbon fibre tape. Australia sucks like that.

I´ve simply bought a 4*8 Inches sized Fibre tape.
Then i attached it on my backcover, heated the tape with a hair dryer and pulled it around the corners. When a part of the Cover was without folds, I let it cool down so that the tape cured and then cut a part of the fibre tape off.
Then I heated the cover again and the procedure started once more.
It took me for about 45 minutes and a very steady hand, even though a friend supported me.
That's awesome! Where did you buy the tape? I'm hoping that it was online...
Here : 3M™ DI-NOC™ CA-421 Carbon Folie
10*20cm are 4*8 Inches, enough for the Galaxy S

Exactly the same here... My edges just didn't get perfect because i was afraid to break them... I was usign the hair drier and it looked like the back cover was going way too wobbly (i don't know the word opposit to "hard"). So pulled it as I could by the edges, wait to cool down and cut off the resting tape..

But just a warning, the backcover usually gets really hot when the phone is charging while running demanding apps. So you might want to be careful doing that in case it is not releasing its heat buildups as easy anymore. Would be sad to have it overheat after making it look so awesome.

I guess so, I just thought it might become a problem if getting rid of all that heat got harder. Mainly because the original gets very hot, and the phone once came up with a warning on mine about not charging the phone while using it so much, I think I was using it to watch a full HD video or something, that I had not bothered to convert to something more fitting to the SGS. But it is nice to use it as a portable media centre.
What a great idea!! Here's me probably bought about 6 different battery covers and cases and always got rid of them because they never fit properly, or if I find one i DO like then they get cracks or the paint wears off.
And this is using the original! Brilliant idea.
Does the tape make the sides of the cover wider than the phone? You know how some cheap badly fitting battery covers seems to stick out at the sides where they should join seamlessly?
Of course it´s a bit thicker, but it fits pretty well Much better than those rubbish Back-covers from Ebay
And to clarify it: There is no problem with overheating at my phone at all....
Battery temps are the same as without the tape so i guess CPU and everything else will be the same too
Anyway temperatures highly depend on the modem-file you use...
I've got (yet another) back cover on the way from eBay, but I think this one may fit just right after talking to the seller... but this carbon tape idea i love! I was thinking about sanding down my stock Samsung back because i love the fit and everything, its' just too damn slippery.... and paint would scratch off over time. but sanding it (if it could be done evenly) would fix that.
Might consider this idea though. I wonder what different types of tape there are.... hmmm....

[MOD] Silver Ear Piece On Phone!!!

First off, this is a physical mod!!! you do this at your own risk!!!
Second, i seen this mod in the captivate section of xda and i cant find the OP so that i can give the guys credit, but credit goes to him for doing this to his captivate!!!
after i seen the thread about this i noticed that my friend, who has a captivate, had a chip in the ear piece and it was silver with black paint on top of it. after seeing this he said "Take it off!" and so i did...after doing it i seen it looked rather cool so i took a knife and started scratching the black paint off of mine. i think it looks good and gives it kind of an accent from all the black on the phone. If you decide to do this to your phone, please be careful when doing it and take your time. you dont wanna take this piece out or make it sharp and end up cutting your ear 1 day when you answer your phone, so again, please be careful when doing this mod!!!

Just did this, and I must say, it looks amazingly awesome. It also kinda smoothed the face down, making it seem more slick.

This reminds me of what I did with my iPod. I took a fine grain sandpaper and sanded the back of my iPod. Looks great now. Unorthodox mod to what we normally see but I dig it Tator, thanks.
What exactly do you do, just scratch off the paint there? Sand it?
I've also been wondering, on older phones you could use a sugar block and scratch off logos like the us cellular or samsung logo. Can we do that?
Sent from my MIUI SCH-i500
I just taped off around ithe speaker grate and used my pocket knife's small blade and she's silver and no scratches. keep in mind I keep my knife extremely sharp and was very very very gentle. It took about 5-10 minutes. Thanks tator. Kinda like the new look.
Edit, Also once you scratch most of it off. an damp alcohol pad seems to remove the remnants really well
Edit: OK so this is how I did it and have no scratches what so ever.
I taped the phone to my desk at work. then taped around the speaker.
Used a Knife to gently scratch off as much of the paint as I could.
Took a toothpick and cut one end as to make a sharp blade on the end and used this to "rub"off the paint down in the crease.
Then wet a q-tip and rubbed the remianng paint of the ear piece.
Hope this helps some that are wondering a way to do this.
I wish I wasn't at work. I would post a pic. Honestly it looks like it was made this way.

I can confirm that this can be done with a dime and get a reasonably good result. I didn't have a knife handy but I did have some change so I scraped a dime across it until it turned silver. Looks fine. Not perfect, I will probably touch it up with a knife later, but it isn't bad and it didnt scratch the surrounding area. I wasn't even careful

yes most likely if it made out of some type of metal. the charging dock uses a electromagnetic field to charge. on that note you do not want to put anything metal inbetween your touchpad and touchstone it will get really hot and cause problems
Any touchpad cut template you figured out?
Sorry for the Delay in getting back to you all.
I JUST GOT ENGAGED!!!!!!!!! and it was my birthday yesterday.
Anyways, I am working on a pattern for people to DIY it easier. I will try to verctorize it in inkscape so those with laser cutters (evil grin) can get perfect results. The pattern wouldn't take longer than a couple of minutes on a laser cutter tops.
Congrats on the engagement. Used to have access to all kinds of cool cut machines at a previous employer. At least I still have plenty of xacto and mat blades. Picked up a roll of the woodgrain. Figured, "why not?" Uninterested in the $30 skins, even if they look a bit cooler.

Congratulations on both counts!!!
Just tried what the OP suggested. But I went with a clear/mat finish contact paper. None of the patterns work for me so went for clear came out nice will post pics tomorrow. I took me less then 3 mins complete the task (stuck it on used black marker to mark where to cut, then lift edges cut and stick back on and used a heat source near corners to smooth if out). I did not go all the way around to the front edge, instead trim it at the back side.
Next one I will remove old one and measure dimensions and make perfect template.
But very happy with results

Had to have a decent buzz before I had the courage hah
Nice and straight to the point. The glass doesn't contain the digitizer, right? It also doesn't need to be glued to the actual oled itself? Isn't the glue between the glass and the oled causing the dark blotches? The oled should be plastic so you should be able to clean it with a light solvent before putting the new glass on. Sorry for so many questions. I haven't cracked mine but its nice to know it can be fixed cheap.

I have no dark blotches. My screen i would say looks 99% factory. I dont know iy I should have added extra adhesive. If my screen falls off I will be sure to mention it. I tryed prying up on it after it cooled and it seems the old glue is sticking very welll:good:

so i have had to re-order my front screen ....

Idk if you saw the threads about the dark blotches when viewing a black image at night. They show up on every phone from the factory. I thought that after your method that a side effect would be those would be gone. This makes me worry less about getting a case

Depending where you get your glass from, i believe some do come with 3M tape cut into the correct shapes ...
the OP did not use anything just the glue that was left there ...
