All you guys who want to see this a reality, submit this tread as a news tip on xda, share it on twitter and g+ (if you would like tag known developers), and do whatever else to get publicity. If we hit the front page of XDA, I'm sure we can get this project off the ground.
I know this idea has been tossed around before, but I want to revive it. Most people believe there is no need for a Cydia store for android. Google doesn't limit apps the same way as Apple does in their respective app stores. But with the recent removal of ad-blocking software from the Play Store, it's got me thinking that maybe a Cydia-like store for android isn't so far fetched.
The Android developer community is much larger and more diverse than the iOS developer community. A Cydia-like store for android could encompass so much more development than is even possible on iOS. Think Kernels, ROMs, and init.d scripts.

Cydia for Android!
This is just an early concept, not an actual app or working demo.
Obviously, the Cydia name cannot be kept, unless it can be licensed from Jay Freeman (Saurik). But it wouldn't be hard to come up with a different name. I did, however, make the icon from scratch, so I won't need to change that.
The Cydia Store for Android could be a central, unified place for developers to store their creations. Right now we have a whole host of sites (goo.im, Get.CM, etc) and several alternate stores (amazon app store, slideme) and of course the XDA, Rootzwiki, and several other forums. Instead of developers having to have their apps and mods and roms on all of the stores and sites and forums for maximum exposure, wouldn't it be great to have just one place for developers to gain recognition?
The Cydia Store for Android would be a perfect place for developers to have their Kernels, Roms, Themes, Recoverys, GApps packages (including modded ones), Mods and Scripts (e.g. v6 supercharger, System mods, init.d scripts), as well as a place for Root apps (E.G. Helium, Root explorer, Greenify) as well as banned apps (obviously not trojans) such as the ad-blockers that recently got pulled from Google Play.
Let me know how you guys feel about this. I don't have enough experience to make a project like this, but I can try to get in contact with developers like Koush Dutta or someone else who knows what's up.
Thanks guys!
This is actually a really great idea; I'm not sure about hosting full ROMs but the rest seems completely doable. I'd love to see one unified store with just root apps, mods etc and I think most people who have rooted their devices would too. Definitely get in touch with some devs to try and make this happen

This seems wicked. Can't wait for the full release.

This is a very great idea but on android it will be hard to make a mod universal for all phones and all roms but (yes again^^) there is app like this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=aperture.ezekeel.experiencepro which work with a lot of phones so why not

There are apps in Google play that only work on specific devices. The cydia store will just have a device identifier and only show the mods for your device, just like in Google Play

Thats a THINK missing from android community...we have a bigger dev community but thinks are spread to whole xda and other forums...an app that unified them could be great!!
Awesome idea..

Good luck but if you host any Gapps you will most likely get a C&D order from google. Not to mention a bunch of copyright issues. Cant really host any OEM based roms due to copyright infringment issues.
I think it would be great

Hmm this is pretty cool, Im going to take a crack at it if the OP doesnt mind. If anyone wants to help out let me know and we can get this going
Of course im going to start with HTML5 page and move on from there. I made one app for one of my ROMS that will be very useful here. It has the basic framework done.
Here is a little more about the app.
Whenever your open it up your a greeted with a series of images that make a loading screen while it prepares everything in the background.
Once everything is loaded it fetches a HTML file from my server and loads it up as a web page. (Completely editable.)
From there we move onto the app section, lets say you click instal.
It fetches a zip from my server and flashes it.
The flashing process and the zip file are based of linux commands. Inside the zip file is a file called update.sh that contains the commands that lets the app have complete control of the system. This is a benefit because it can flash mods and what not inside android without any recovery.
Once the file is done downloading it flashes it either to the system or data (User specificable). And if its a mod I can add a command that will make it quick boot.
Thats basically the app ill see if i can make a little test build.
BTW it can install apps much much much faster than the play store.

Big diff is that we here and Google both take it very seriously. Google already issued at least one C&D order to the CM team about including gapps on their roms.
As long as it doesnt contain any paid apps for free then you should be ok. Not to mention you will need to have each and every Devs permission to host their apps.
I really like this concept and I wanna help but sadly, I don't know how to code... Hopefully this becomes real through

Like everyone else has said, great concept but there's just one snag which I believe no one has mentioned yet... I'm not sure developers would be interested in pulling their apps from Google Play that has the combined audience of geeks (us) and average users to a Cydia like market that caters only for geeks. Obviously doing so will mean less revenue (where the app costs money).
I suppose developers could release apps on both stores but doesn't that defeat the whole point of an Android Cydia? It becomes redundant.
Just my $0.02

I don't see why Saurik honestly wouldn't allow you guys to use the Cydia name, it's good publicity for him and cross platforming.
I got a ALPHA done. IT IS EXTREMELY EARLY IN ITS STAGE.
I have most of the basic things done for the installation part of the app just need the designing of it.
A few things to note.
It also has a different icon.
It has a different name, ill fix that later. (Open AlienMods for now)
When testing click on the adaway and it will install that app.
It loads up the picture from the concept from the OP. (THANKS OP)
It might crash,etc.
It will install succesfully but the installing text will still be there. Once you get to the installing part wait 2-4 seconds then go home and the app should be there.
(IT INSTALLS EXTREMELY FAST, Even apps around 100-500mb it installs around 10-15 seconds.)
THIS IS A ALPHA.
The reason for the zip is because the app relies on some files that are not in any ROM.
Installation
Flash the zip.
Done.
Download - HERE
One last thing some of you might ask why im posting this so early on. Here is the reason why.
Testing it.
Show you that this is possible and not hard. Just requires time.
LMK what happens.
YES I KNOW THAT WAS QUICK
If some developers are interested in helping me out here is the basic script that installs an app. (Yes thats it, no complications just simple codes and done.)
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
cp AP.apk /system/app/
wait
chmod 644 /system/app/AP.apk

Click to collapse
Here is the script to uninstall an app.
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system
rm /system/app/AP.apk

And here is the script for it to install mods, in this case it was an updater to a ROM i made. This can be used for anything other than installing app such as mods or updates to a ROM.
busybox mount -o remount,rw /system

See second post for updates and info about the current status of this project.
Credit for this also goes to a wonderful app developer, appelflap, who wrote the app, provides excellent support and will receive thanks and part of the contributions from the donate version on the market. He is a fantastic developer; I urge everyone who would donate to me to send some his way as well
General Description
Battery Icon Mod is a general app (root required) for turning the standard battery icon into something more useful and more sophisticated.
The (ambitious) goal is to serve mods with this app for as many devices as possible. See second post for the devices/roms that are currently supported.
Important
Make a nandroid backup. I've written a very simple guide how to do this with Rom Manager here. (Really it costs you only a minute or so. Very easy to do)
If you apply a wrong version or you stumble upon a corrupted one (although all versions are tested)... you may ending up with a unbootable device. In that case you have to flash your firmware again... OR just do a simple restore of your backup (I will describe a general restore procedure later on)
Only choose the version that matches your device and rom. Also make sure that the rom version matches your current rom.
Sometimes [/I]mods for a particular rom will also work on another rom. However that's not the rule, more an exception. If you try, make sure you have a backup of your system.
Requests
If your device/rom isn't supported post a request with a copy of your framework-res.apk (it's in the /system/framework directory) with a description of the device and rom you have.
Note: The international Samsung Galaxy S (GT-I9000) will still be supported by this app. Post your requests there. Later these two projects will be merged together.'

Themers and modders
Like to share your modded framework-res.apk? Post it in this thread (with a description of course of the device and rom it is supposed to run on) and we will put a link to it in the app.
Credits
To all modders and to theimpaler747 who made the first steps of this general project possible, and for appelflap, who is an excellent and supportive app developer who does things with apps I cannot . And of course the guys behind UOT Kitchen, who made this work so much more easy. Thanks.
Donations
There's a donation version in the Android Market (search for: Battery Icon Mod). Donations are mainly for paying the server that hosts the mods, and for putting these mods together (theimpaler747). Thanks!
Unfortunately, but needed at this moment:
Two (not tested) restore procedures for if you have a boot loop and didn't make a Nandroid backup.
Both methods require that you have adb installed. If not, download the Android SDK from here: http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html and find the adb program in the subdirectory "platform-tools".
Method 1 - update.zip method:
Create your own update.zip with which you install the backup of the modified file back in restore mode.
The instructions for this and the tool needed for it can be downloaded here: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/17635874/restore.zip
CREDITS: The tool/script that is used to create the update.zip is another brilliant tool of the creator of APK Manager: Daneshm90. The thread of this tool can be found here (another pearl I found on xda-dev lately (I had to repackage it to make the restore procedure simpler)
Method 2 - shell method
Install and run SuperOneClick and choose "Shell Root"
Start ADB, wait for the # prompt and enter the following commands:
#busybox mount -o remount,rw /system (or mount -o ro,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system if there's no busybox)
#rm /system/framework/framework-res.apk
#cp /sdcard/framework-res.apk /system/framework/framework-res.apk
#chown root.root /system/framework/framework-res.apk
#chmod 644 /system/framework/framework-res.apk
#reboot
Again these methods are not fully tested. They "should" work. Feedback is very much appreciated.
(Nevertheless if these methods don't work it should get your guys going in searching in the right direction to get out of a boot looper)
Reserved here from me, thanks appelflap for compiling ours together into a nice application! More phones to come, and please donate to help buy server space if you enjoy this! Thank you

This is an app you can run from your rooted phone to odex your framework and system apps (has option to also odex data/app but its not recommended). The app will automatically remove classes.dex from each apk as well. I've tested this on shift deck and cm7 ROMs also works on og evo. There's no test on the app so if you run it and you're already odex or not on a compatible ROM or whatnot; its still going to run.. It was originally made for the evo shift but it has been tested successfully on the Evo on kush deck rom and CM7 nightlies (it checks to see if its a shift or original evo and mounts accordingly). This is for Gingerbread AOSP ROMs and hasn't been tested on sense (bootclasspath is different so it's likely it will not work).
Make sure you have a fresh nand before using, just in case.
Recommended usage: Press button "Odex System Framework". Let it do its thing then press "Odex System Apps" (be patient, takes several minutes to complete). While running, don't interrupt it.
Other option "Odex Framework + System Apps" works fine as well but not as safe as running separately.
"Odex Data Apps" isn't recommended, its an option I put in but I don't even use.
Always remember, you must odex framework before system/apps!
Keep in mind, apps are going to force close while the script is running. Also dalvik cache is deleted when it goes through system/apps so when it reboots; you will likely have to setup your widgets again and may have to sign back into gapps.
Big thanks to Dodgejcr for help with the script.

Does this odex sense based roms as well? This sounds good though.
edit: dang it...should've paid more attention to the post got my answer... question: do you plan to make a deodexer as well...just curious.

I've never tried to be honest. As I said in the OP, I don't think it will but if someone wants to try (and make a nand first) that would be cool. At least report back and let us know lol.
Edit: deodexing would be an ideal option however it takes java commands to deodex an app with baksmali so unfortunately its not an option. For example: java -jar baksmali.jar -x :nameofjar.odex and those commands can't be run on the phone.
This looks cool. Soon we won't even need our computers to hack and mod our phones lol.
Trying this on Merge. Will follow up, Thanks!
Good job man. Previously I've accomplished this with bash scripts. I'd like to see where this goes. Like option to search for bootclasspath and automatically use the it, instead of having a dedicated one (which limits the app). Good job
Edit. If you are interested, I can make this work on Sense.
Edit 2. Man. This has me really intrigued now I looked through the app. One more thing that needs to be implemented is the removal of classes.dex. Once Odexed, you don't need classes.dex. It simply takes up space.

Classes.dex is automatically removed. Also, I'm planning on adding the option to select an apk to odex (individually) and thinking about finding the bootclasspath maybe by looking in init.rc but that's a thought.

It won't be a bad idea to add single apk odex. It never hurts to have more options.

Thank you for putting this together! I'm no stranger to rooting but seem to be missing something as I'm unable to get either method to work. Using the phone in USB debug mode and when utilizing the ADB method I get access denied. When I use the .bat it says "no such file or directory" any ideas?
I'll give this a shot in a few hours and post results. Is this permanent root or will it unroot if I reboot? This is my first HTC device, so I'm still a bit nubish. Glad to see someone's working with this phone, though. Besides the single channel audio it's actually pretty impressive.

Holy Crap, third times the charm!! Your like the "Evo Design" man of the year. Many thanks
Ya haha I just got sprint and went with Evo Design and then couldn't go without it. We need a forum >.<
No kidding, I made my request here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1301121
This has got to be one of the quietest HTC releases in some time with little to none Dev interest. I thought my Photon was bad
Seconded. We definitely need a forum. I got this phone 2 weeks ago, so it'll be like 18 months before I'm eligible for an upgrade. I didn't realize there wouldn't be very much enthusiasm for development on this phone. Makes me even more thankful that we have at least one dev on board lol. I'm going to give this is a shot as soon as my little sister gets off the comp.

I am a half what developer in progress that's why I am going to keep this phone! so I can learn and contribute I'll be like the DJ_Steve for the dell streak haha!
Hello guys!
I've found this nice app today, while I was searching over the web an way to list my purchased apps. It is called Legacy Play Store. Basically, it is an old version of Play Store hacked to allow side-by-side install with newer versions and a feature that I was missing so much: list of purchased apps.
The original source is here: http://www.modaco.com/topic/356009-r2-legacy-play-store-with-all-purchased-apps-visible/. Download is there too, since original author asked to not post this everywhere.
To install, push to /system/app and chmod it to 644. Reboot and it should be there.
Here is the changelog:
Code:
[I]r2[/I]
[LIST]
[*]Modified 'My Apps' list order to show 'Not Installed' apps above 'Installed' apps
[*]Improved compatability with AOSP ROMs
[/LIST]
[I]r1[/I]
[LIST]
[*]Initial Release
[/LIST]

All I did was rename it to phonesky.apk, and copy it into the system/app directory. I didn't chmod or anything like that. Works fine for me.
It helped me to update Google wallet, as it is the only app that is blocked by Verizon that I needed. It makes it show up as update available when the regular market does not.

This app is intended to be installed side-by-side with the standard market.
The chmod (or fix-permissions) is needed in order to android system be able to see/use it. I don't know if all Androids works like this, but on my phone it only show after I set the chmod to 644.

It worked fine for me sometimes, but I was having issues with it.
Sometimes I would have to close the app and restart it multiple times to get it to show my apps. It would keep saying no connection with a retry button, even though the play store showed them just fine.
And any apps I had that used in app purchases, where's my water for example, would take me to the legacy store and give me an error message. I had to uninstall it to get it to let me have the option for the in app purchases again.

FYI: Chmod 644 = rw - r - r (app permission)

I understood that the author didn't wanted the download link (re)posted elsewhere. This is why I didn't include any direct link to the file.

GIDR (named GIDE on the play store) is a ROOT application that installs a fully working GCC compiler on your phone. It works from the GUI as still from the Terminal. (Note that Jackpal Terminal is required to run this app.
Features:
- GCC 5.2.0
- standalone install
- no delete on uninstall
- heavy install (250 mb on internal storage)
Known bugs / faults:
- UI sucks (yes it does )
- Takes very long time on extracting (up to 5 min on a s3 mini due to hardware restrictions)
Changelog:
1.1
- new design (sucks still)
- code improvements for faster extracting times (about 20 secs now)
1.0
- initial release
- added Material support
- created GitHub repo

Awesome bro that's sounds great. Send away. I will help any way I can. Bug reports, tests, you got it. My initial goal was to compile a kernel for my note 4 on the device itself but i havent been able to find a single guide or even a reference to someone doing it. A lot about compiling apps but none about compiling a kernel from source. I have a pc with manjaro and all the build tools but I can't carry that around with me all day and i know the note 4 has enough power to do it. If I knew enough and could build apps I would build one like a mobile android studio. Pick your source code, pick your toolchain, automatic detection of makefiles and such, built in make menuconfig, hit compile then boom....easy peasy.....here's your kernel sir. Haha. I know that would make things way too easy but what I don't get is with all the kernel developers, why nobody has made a kernel specific IDE..... just for compiling and modifying the android kernel......but anyway, damn got way off track there....shoot me the builds bro. And let me know what you need from me. Thanks

Ok bro I'll send you the latest nightly build in about 1 hour. It has a new design (very simple but has error output). It downloads the GCC from my GitHub and then extracting it to /data/local/GCC. It creates links to /system/bin as well so you can test it out via terminal. It is a debug version so you can see logcat from it. One error I got (for now) is that it cannot unzip the GCC zip to /data in cause of permission errors but for somehow it copies. So that would be a starting point. And about your idea to create an IDE for Android and so on, GREAT that would be the goal for me. Cya later. Btw did you have Skype? Would be faster to talk to each other.

Thanks bro. Im excited as hell. No skype. I can probably get it. I do have telegram which I use and alot...mostly cuz it's so quick like sms. And quick is probably better because I would be grateful for your knowledge at times. I'm still learning...but only way for most to learn is by help from others with more skills and knowledge such as yourself. Do you build roms and kernels?

Ok if you are on Android 4.4 or above please go to settings->apps->GCC and ensure that storage permission is granted. Second did you allowed root access?
Third did you have BusyBox installed?
Fourth did you downloaded the file correctly? (Did the process has gone to 100%).
If you don't have root tell me then I will fix that.
I am on 6.0 MM and I have Systemmode Su 2.79. I made sure storage was granted and I keep my supersu set to always grant all. And busybox in xbin. Does it need to also be in sbin? Also wound mount namespace matter? I'm gonna attach screens

Hmm check if there is a GCC compiler in /data/local/GCC then tell me.
It could be that it doesn't symlinks the files (that would explain the runtime error)
Oh yea I checked that first and it's there. Also .GCC hidden folder on sd. This is my path. Is there suppose to be a GCC/GCC subfolder

Ok then nice. Just go to bin and symlink those files to /system/bin
With those commands:
"ln -s /data/local/GCC/bin/arm-linux-androideabi-gcc /system/bin/gcc"
Replace the GCC with g++ or ar or ld.
Btw here is Telegramm Chat Link. Im Leonardo Meitz.

Ok im in nro
I'm actually adding no root support. But there are some troubles with permissions in the /data folder so it will take about 1 additional day to work fully.
Attached latest test build. It extracts GCC now to /data/data/pythonlimited.gcc/GCC but the permission are still buggy so I can't execute GCC directly.
Will be fixed I promise.
