Has anyone had any luck connecting an external optical drive to the TF700? I have a Samsung SE-506 that i have been using with my laptop for burning BluRay's, and I was hoping it would work with my future tablet. I understand that mass storage devices connect, but I have found very little information regarding a external blu-ray drives. I have a vast collection of blu-ray titles, and don't want to convert them in order to watch them on the HD tablet. Any input is greatly appreciated.

AFAIK the TF700 doesn't have the necessary drivers for reading optical media. I once tried hooking up a portable DVD drive to it via the USB dock connector and the TF700 didn't even acknowledge that something was connected. It WILL read portable hard drives, though, both the spinning platter and the SSD variety, as long as they're properly formatted in FAT32 or exFAT. NTFS is a no-go.
That was with the original Android 4.1.2 that the tablet came with. Haven't tried it with 4.2, although I don't think anything will change.

What are you blabbering on about? I only have NTFS formatted drives, and my TF700 recognises everything from a 128MB pendrive to a 2TB flashdrive to a 3TB external harddrive with power adapter.
(Have you tried storing a 64GB .mkv BluRay on Fat32? It has some issues with that. About 60GB worth of issues, to be exact. )

I'm only partly kidding here. My excuses for the plagiarism.

Thanks for the replies. Are drivers something that can be installed/ manipulated if I root the tablet? Otherwise, are there any tablets that do have the necessary drivers?

Drivers are part of the kernel and probably already included. But there is no Blu-ray player software for Android (that I am aware of).
Well that's a bummer. So is there much media out there that plays in 1080p. As far as I know Netflix doesn't, YouTube doesn't, and most games don't seem to either, what does? Much of the reason for going with a larger tablet is that the smaller ones don't have true HD screens, but if it just for better looking webpages, i'm not sure i'm making the right decision.

You can probably access a PC-connected drive if you share it on your network, but I don't think you can stream Blu-Ray content to your tablet quickly enough for good playback. An alternative is to rip those media to a shared hard drive and play back from a compressed .mkv. In my experience, ripping a Blu-Ray to ~4GB is enough for decent quality on a large screen, for the Infinity's 10" screen you could go even lower. As far as I'm concerned, physical media is kind of dead anyway

Sharper text, sharper images - definitely the right decision for *me*. Higher resolution can also mean *more* text visible, e.g. a full page.

Unfortunately all that doesn't work because of copy protection. That is most likely also the reason why there is no playback software for Android.

So I read that the TF is cheaper because it uses a hard disk instead of flash storage.
Does anyone notice the difference? Is it noisy?
LOL where did you read that bullcrap? I am 100% sure my TF101 has an SSD, operation is silent.
Wherever you read that... well... it's just wrong. It's flash based memory, no moving parts. The only sound (other than from the speakers) is the hum from the screen. But then all screens make a noise due to their frequencies. Some people will hear it, others won't.
How the heck is a disk drive supposed to fit in something that thin...
Voodoo magic and a huge crowbar.
Ok guys my bad! I just had to ask since I read it on some sites.
You can close this thread now
There is some manufacturer coming out with a tablet soon that has a spinning hard drive. I can't remember who it is, maybe Archos?

It is indeed flash based, as others have noted, but hard disks that thin have been readily available for years. Type-II CompactFlash microdrives are none other than a small hard drive, and first appeared in 1999. A Type-II CompactFlash card is only 5mm thick.
Yes, capacities have lagged way behind flash though, partly because Microdrives have fallen out of popularity as flash memory has gotten cheaper. Hence the largest Microdrive is only 8GB. They also have issues in terms of shock resistance and susceptibility to damage from air pressure changes, etc.
archos tablets will have hard drives.
Archos has had a tablet with a 250gb hard drive for long
http://www.archos.com/store/psearch.html?country=dk&lang=en&prod_id=archos70it
Archos like HDD's, cheaper and lots more storage. They have a shock mounting system thing, like HP drivegaurd, or Sony hdd protect (I think apple have one, but lets not mention them )
Anyway, thread closed as per OP req

Hi,
If i buy the otg cable for galaxy tab 10.1 , is it compatible with this galaxy tab 7+?
**excuse me for my english
thanks
Bought mine through eBay. From China. AFAIK, all the tabs with 30 pin connectors use the same one. Anyway, mine was labeled for all of them in the advertisement.

I want to buy this tablet for :
-Read manga scan
- for watching anime (mp4/mkv 720p)
is it the right choice or I'm wasting my money ?
thanks x2 !!
I bought one that had a label of Galaxy Tab 10.1 only
I worked great for most stuff I have save for my portable hard drive. Said it was a high power device and cannot be supported.
Flash drives, mice, and keyboards seem to work fine. Too bad it did not work for the intended purpose: the hard drive.
Does yours work?
@minimadness
Personal experience for the tab is it is great for watching anime. I used to do it on my phone but I find it too small. So I used my laptop which was a hassle to bring. I like watching now on the tab. It is portable, big enough and it has good screen quality over all. Same as for manga reading. Just the right size for me. Any bigger would be hard to carry around outside for me. Then again, this would be only my personal opinion.

I have an Infinity already but fell for all the Windows 8 hype and picked up a Vivo RT today. It was $599 and right now Asus is shipping free keyboard docks with registration so it's cheaper than the Infinity until the 30 of Nov.
Pluses:
Netflix is usable out of the box. No stutter. Better interface. Just plain better.
Can browse and play off SMB shares right out of the box. All my windows shares are visible and playable from the desktop file explorer. I was able to play MP4 and AVI files off my NAS just fine with no extra software using only the included Windows Video Player.
My DLNA server is also visable right out of the box. No software needed to be installed and I was able to play my media off it.
Comes with Office. Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. Official Microsoft apps and not a third party app that messes up formatting.
Carried over my desktop Windows 8 account and all the settings. Just entered the same account and pass as my desktop and all my Calendars and email were there. Google email and calendars.
Comes with a dock connector to USB adapter. To plug in peripherals. Keyboards, thumb drives, mice...
Negatives:
No MKV playback right now. There is no app to play mkv files on the Windows market on Nov 1. When i tried to play from the smb share it asked me to look for an app to play the file on the market. When I tried to play it from my DLNA server (Serviio) is started copying the file. I might be able to set the DLNA server to transcode for the device.
Have to wait for dock to ship. No keyboard dock out the door.
Different dock connector than TF700. It's a different size and it's actually in a different spot. So no point in trying the TF700 dock.
I can answer questions if anyone has any.
Where did you buy?
How many usable apps in the Windows store?
Is the build pretty good?
...and Congrats!
Thanx!
jim
I just left the Windows store to check this unit out and I love it. It was smooth! Maybe it was the familiarity with Windows, not sure but it didn't feel fragmented.

I bought at my local computer store. They had 2 in stock when I check first thing this morning and one had already sold by the time I got there.
The only app I've installed so far is netflix and teamviewer. Both were usuable, No youtube or Rdio app in the store but they run fine in the broswer. So far IE is the only browser available.
It's IE 10 and so far it's actually very usable and quick. All the interface disappears when you load a page and you pull down from the top to get tabs and bottom to get the address bar. Youtube is actually as fast as on my desktop. No stutter or crashing. I tried Ustream as well to watch the twit.tv live stream and that works fine as well.
The headphone jack is on the top right side just above the volume rocker. Left side has micro hdmi and microsd card slot. Power is on top. The plastic on the back has a texture to it. It's not rubberized but if you're holding it with your two pointer fingers on the back it acts as a friction surface so it doesn't slide. The metal parts feel a lot like the tf700 but it has 2 speakers on the back instead of one. Feels solid. No plastic creaking.

Since you mentioned SMB I'm assuming your content is on a PC or Windows Server somewhere. PlayOn will playback MKV files in a browser. You'd have to install PlayOn server wherever your files are located. Then, in the browser, go to "m.playon.tv" and it'll find the server with your content on it. The server will transcode the video. It works using the Android browser set to desktop (20GB MKV file) so I'm guessing it'll work with IE on RT. PlayOn's not free but it might be worth a shot since there's nothing currently out there.

IE 10 is actually whitelisting flash on sites. My Serviio server has a browser as well. I just tried it and you can browse to the file and see the thumbnail but then it asks you to install flash.
Edit: Just did a quick search and found a post on xda for the Surface: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33447933 to white list custom sites. I'll have to try that.
2nd Edit: I did as the site said and now i can view the mkv's on my tablet for the time being. The server is transcoding them though. I can hear the fan's whirling up as we speak. It's an easy process. Just have to edit an xml file.
3rd Edit: Added live.twit.tv and now that site works as well. Very impressed so far.
OP don't you mean VivoTab RT?
I personally would have waited for the VivoTab (non RT) to launch. That one will run on better hardware (intel and not crappy ARM), and will run a real version of Windows 8 and not one that's completely incompatible.

All of that is true. I'm just hoping that the App store takes off and we get all the best apps. An Atom Vivo would be nice as long as Intel can keep the power down and the battery life up.
If the x86 windows tablets have active cooling and 4 hour battery life I'll be happy with this RT because right now all i'm doing is watching media, checking email, and working on my Excel files for work.
Is there some form of photoshop available on the market?

I have my doubts about RT from an app perspective. I actually think metro may be ok for tablets(not all touch), but unless it proves out as the standard for windows app on all form factors, devs are not going to jump on it and apps will remain scarce. Full screen IM clients may be ok on 7/10 in tabs, but on a 15/17+ screen it is the most retarded waste of desktop space i've ever seen. Some apps fit metro, a lot don't.
That said I would have no interest in an atom based tab. Atom is terrible across thd board. I'm curious to try an I5/I7 based win8 tab, but they gotta prove battery life to weight equation or get a better solution from intel.

I also went to Micro Center yesterday and picked one up. I really like it. It doesn't seem to have any out of box defects aside from the bezel on one corner being a few hair's width separated from the aluminum back, but it's a very solid device that's very thin, the OS is very snappy, the ecosystem isn't as bad as people make it out to be.
I chose this over the Surface because this was thinner and, well, free keyboard dock.
Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone had any ideas about how I might be able to move some video files from my Surface to an iPhone or iPad.
I'm going on a long plane ride with my two kids. I was hoping that I could switch the content on their iPod Touches / iPads sometime during the flight or stream wirelessly from the Surface to the devices. I'm leaning towards purchasing the Seagate Satellite Mobile Wireless 500GB hard drive. It's on sale at BestBuy for $100 so I could return it if it doesn't work. However, I've already got a small usb-powered HD so I was hoping I would somehow be able to use the drive as a wireless bridge.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Why not use an adapter for iPad/iTouch? Cheaper option for sure.
http://www.amazon.com/5-1-Card-Read...d=1355167273&sr=8-1&keywords=ipad+usb+adapter
Surface already has USB built in. You'll have to carry a flash drive/ external HDD and that should get you to move files between those devices.
Not sure that will work - Ipods need Itunes to get movies on them. Its not a Surface issue, but an ipod limitation(One of the reasons the Surface blows the Ipad out of the water)
What I would recommend is upload the Mp4 via Skydrive, and then go to your computer that has itunes, and pull the file of Skydrive and import into itunes
Thanks for the replies.

i do know the Surface will recognize an Ipod plugged in to the USB (as i have done it), but it will be as a storage device. You can transfer the Mp4 that way, but not sure how you would play it unless you can load a third party video player app on the ipod that allows you to browse and play local files, instead of using Apples built in video player.
Just get Cydia on that junk. Then you can browse local files etc.
About 6 months ago I start shopping and researching with the intent of picking up an android TV box. Since then, and about 1500 reviews, suggestions, reports, etc I'm kinda stuck on what I really want/need.
Right now I've got a plethora of 500GB - 1TB 2.5/3.5/USB drives I've got docked or plug in to my laptop to stream movies, etc to my TV.
I was going to go with one of the cheaper S905 boxes and set up Kodi, but after seeing some of the newer NUC's or NAS options I'm not really sure what direction to go.
I am primarily looking to stream/play 1080p and 4k movies to my tv. I've got a newer Sharp 4k Smart TV so I've got Netflix/Amazon streaming already, so those aren't necessary for the box. I also just want to be able to have an easy (and FAST) way to utilize these hard drives without having to plug them in to my laptop.
I also wouldn't mind the options of using Kodi to stream alternate sources for shows/movies, but I am not focusing on that.
Would you guys recommend one of the newer Android boxes, throwing together a NUC or just utilize a NAS storage?
Price point is about $150-200. I've got the HDD/SSD's for a NUC, and ram is cheap enough so I don't have any problem with that. Just need something with AC wireless capability and USB 3.0 inputs (possibly Bluetooth if I decide to get a remote/keyboard).
