Welcome to Androot-N7p-ROM for the NextBook 7 Premium *ONLY.
I decided to change up some of the apps and generalize the rom in terms of its boot-animation screen. It runs on LauncherPro (just choose it as the "always"/default upon first instance of it. The Launcher that comes with the device isn't so great, but I left it there just in case.
It's based on the first known rooted ROM for this device: 'DocHoppy's ROM'. Credit for most of this ROM goes to him and to 'Wendal' for his toolset for packing the ROM (into cramfs) for the Nextbook 7 Premium device.
As such, it is a beta/ work-in-progress.

Rename file to update.img
copy file to root of SD card.

Disclaimer:
I am not responsible for bricked devices.
Here's my changes..
removed:
-youtube player <- the real youtube app is better
-explorer <- redundant
-slide me app market <- redundant now that Google's Market is installed
-quick search box <- Google Search widget is better IMO
kept/added:
-Market <- the real Google one
-root explorer - an alternative & capable file explorer
-astro file manager <- we all know it well
-quickpic 1.5.2 - a much lighter & more efficient photo organizer/viewer
-3D gallery <- some love it, some hate it
-brightness level 1.0.0 - quicker brightness changes
-ConnectBot 1.6.2 <- for those that need a SSH tool
-Officesuite full <- may as well keep it
-Titanium Backup 4.6.7 <- has some very handy tools aside from backups
-LauncherPro 0.8.6 <- may be old, but it's smooth and capable
-superuser <- because this rom is rooted
-has some of the Google Apps (go ahead and add as you see fit)
-has a custom boot animation.

Known Issue:
Apps2sd reports SU Binary out of date. Attemps to update this via superuser fails due to cramfs file system.
It's not perfect, but it does work well and I run it as my daily driver on my N7P.
Please give feedback or suggestions! I trust the pro devs could easily help me out with the little things!

Since I'm new to modifying/cooking ROMs, here's my
Questions I have for the devs that cook ROMs all the time...
(lol)
Where do I edit the items that show in 'settings > about' in the device?
How do I change the default shortcuts that LauncherPro puts on the dock?
How do I change what icons are default on the home screen?
Where do I put custom wallpapers as part of the rom?
How do I modify Android UI colours?
Can the dialer be removes without losing "contacts"?
How do I create a shortcut to "contacts" without the phone/dialer?
(more to come I'm sure)
Hello, first of all, thanks for your work!
I am having trouble loading this rom. it says there's an invalid image file in my sd card and if I want to delete.
Now, I don't know if my tablet is a never or older version of what you guys have...
Next7p
2.3.1
kernel: 2.6.32.27
build: v2.0.7.....
my serial is also different from alot..it starts with YF0511
any help or tips?
In Dochoppy's original rom/post he mentions that the device will need to have a serial number starting with YF1011. That stands the same for this rom, as it's derived from his.
Having an invalid update.img firmware file could be due to a number of things, but the one I have here works on my device.
I wish I had more of an answer, but by all means try out the tools for repacking the rom.
So after messing around compiling a ROM, I forgot to add a launcher, and now I am stuck in a bootloop. After the girl in the dress is there for awhile, I get a black screen, then reboot. Anyone now how to fix this? I have been searching Google, but can not find anything yet.
Any help would be great!

I had mine half dead for a short bit until i found i could go into a low level bootloader mode and recover it. I am working on getting a the tool/images i used to recover mine uploaded and such.
Download and extract n7p_rescue_kit.zip
Reboot device using paper clip then quickly press and hold reset until you get black screen with usb plugged in
When windows wants driver give it the respective folder for your os (32bit or 64bit) from Drivers folder from the download
Run RK29update.exe if it says "Found RKAndroid Loader Rock Usb" on bottom you are good but if it shows "No Found RKAndroid rock usb" repeat last step.
Either flash all of the default selected items or do just system (since bootloop is in system)
Hope this helps
P.S. If you pack then unpack your custom one you can flash JUST system using the tool but be sure to use the offsets that are pre-loaded.
use a pin to push the reset button on the back to break out of the boot loop.
If after this your rom still bootloops, try putting a different update.img rom to flash, on to the sd card. Then boot into safe mode by holding all 4 front buttons after boot. the update should be found and installed after that.
Thanks!
I registered just to thank DocHoppy for all his efforts. I have a Nextbook Premium 7 I got for Christmas from Hastings, which fell into the YF09111XXXX batch. I used Wendal Chen's RK29xxImageTools_v2.1 to unpack the firmware upgrade from the nextbookusa site. I then put the Google apks, SuperUser, Rootexplorer, and re-packed it with a custom bootanimation. Because of my serial # I couldn't use DocHoppy rom without getting that "Invalid Update" error, but using their firmware seems to work.
My next goal is to find a way to get the "Accounts & Sync" into the settings! One of my apps is getting an "Error 42" which is an Android Market authentication error... however, other apps have worked without any problems so it's difficult to tell if that's the issue I'm having.

Not sure if this rom will work for you, just guessing by your serial number. If it is to work changing between roms on these tablets is very easy. Just download the image onto the root of your sdcard, rename it update.zip (not update.zip.zip) your tablet will recognize it as an update and ask if you want to proceed. If you say yes then follow the prompts and your in business!

Just go this to day and was plesantly suprised to find this rooted rom. Just wanted toy let you know that my S/N is YF12112xxxx and this rom work prefect for me (so far) Thanks for all the work you guys have done here. Also is there anyway to over clock the processor in out tabs?
Thanks for the comments thus far!
I would like to overclock this thing too, but that might be further down the road, as priority is on getting a different file-system for the /system volume.
Version 0.4 is coming next.
FYI:
There will be a larger span of time between updates on this particular rom for the N7p, because I will be using more stable conjumbles of things from other roms for this device. This rom is more of a remix or derivative than an entirely different rom.
Again thanks for all the hard work. I have a few requests. first since we cant change the Adhoc ( using wifi from another android device) on the fly with out RW access can you please add the ability to connect to adhoc wifi in the next build? Also i love google currents app but we cant use is on our device because we don't have map's installed. can that be added as well?

Most of the N7P roms out there now have Market installed and working. Why not just install these apps yourself?
I only suggest so because for the time being, the device is limited to its minimal capacity for apps without full-on apps2SD. Besides, for a tablet like this, you want to keep the system apps to a minimum and de-bloated for performance whenever possible.

Oh I was talking about currents and maps. Both of those can be installed via market. I have them both on my tablet.
The ad-hoc networking is something worth putting in a later release though.

This is my first attempt at a custom ROM for any Android device, so bear with me. I did not build this from AOSP source, or any other source code. It's entirely from ASUS. This ROM is intended for those who don't like the stock ASUS apps, similar to KRAKD/FROZN, except I've not optimised any of the APKs or anything else. Hopefully this can be a useful base ROM for another dev, taking the tedious part out of the equation. It's completely based on US, not WW or TW.
It's large(300Mbyte) because I used a binary blob. I'm working on shrinking it down with a proper update sript.
Apps I removed:
Amazon Kindle
MyCloud
ASUS File Manager
MyLibrary
MyNet
Netflix
News & Weather(and their widgets)
PolarisOffice
PressReader
MyZine
Tegra Game Zone
Web Storage
Zinio
PC Sync
ASUS Software keyboard(the touchscreen one, not the dock keyboard)
DMClient(related to ASUS updates, from what I understand)
ASUS software update(so no annoying OTA notifications that you can't use anyway)
SuperNote
-any others not included that I forgot to list
How to install:
1. A complete data wipe(at least dalvik & cache, data is optional) is strongly recommended if you're coming from Honeycomb.
2. Flash the zip from CWM.
3. Enjoy your new ICS.
You should be able to flash from any ROM if you clear at least dalvik and cache.
Features:
-Pre-rooted for your convenience, with busybox, su, and SuperUser.
-ALL bloatware removed, hopefully improving performance
-Closer to an AOSP experience due to all bloat being removed.
What this ROM does NOT have:
-Custom kernel
-Stock ICS buttons(it has the crummy ASUS back, home, recent app buttons)
-Zipaligned APKs
-Deodexed APKs
-A name, since it doesn't really need one right now.
How I created it(roughly, not a step by step):
1. I reverted from a custom ROM(krakd) to the latest US .21 HC release, with stock recovery
2. I Rooted with nachoroot and then used OTA keeper to unroot
3. I updated to US ICS via OTA.
4. I reapplied root with OTA keeper
5. I used ES file manager and terminal to remove the apps
6. I used ES file manager to add SuperUser to /system
7. Installed busybox at some point during these steps, I forget when.
8. Used dd to image the /system partition(mmcblkp0) to a file on my MicroSD
9. Replaced the LNX and APP blobs of a Honeycomb update(.21) with the ICS ones
10. Flashed it, and it worked.
So it's not a "proper" update, broken down into directories and such, but it does work.

Have you tested this at all?>
Yes, why? It worked fine on my TF101.
I think everyone is always a bit skeptical of a ROM that someone says openly is their first attempt and they have less than 10 posts on here..you are after all talking about potentially rendering a $500 device useless..people are usually right to exercise caution..when the developer cannot post in the dev section because his post count is too low!
But hey, that is how Paul Burton started here, though it was not his first ROM I am quite positive..

It sounds like he got the ROM and removed the third party apps, not that he got the source code to build it to AOSP.
its more a list of apps that are safe to remove with TB...... IMO anyway. Happy to wait and see if it leads to something a bit more though.
Lets make sure that no one will ever want to dev for us anymore by slapping the new guy around who took the time to try something himself. I recall Paul didnt have enough posts to start a thread in dev but he seems to know what hes doing. Why not just ban anyone whos new from ever posting any kind of dev work ever. Because what we need are more people making fun of and trashing someones work instead of people actually willing to take their time and try to make YOUR device nicer. Any wonder if this is why devs are leaving xda every day?
BTW..Just flashed this and it booted just fine. I did a system wipe first.
Maybe you should be the guy to add onskreen framework to a rom....hint

I didn't, sadly. I kludged it together somewhat by dding the fully updated ICS /system partition(adding busybox, su, Superuser beforehand) and making it into a blob that's flashable.

Correct.
Thanks for the feedback guys. If you want anything added, I'll try to accomodate with flashable zips since they're smaller to upload. My upload is horrible, so I can only upload a large ROM every once in a while(it takes over an hour!). I'm not discouraged, I know how it is to be the new guy. I know this rom's probably nothing special, but I just wanted to share what I'm enjoying with others.

Haha, it's not that custom, more of a repack with a bunch of removed apps, but I'll look into making it deodexed and stuff. I'm still learning how to do that.

Fix for MicroSD mount(for ADB):
adb shell
su
mkdir /Removable/MicroSD
mkdir /Removable/SD
mkdir /Removable/USBdisk1
mkdir /Removable/USBdisk2
Or open a terminal emulator app:
su
mkdir /Removable/MicroSD
mkdir /Removable/SD
mkdir /Removable/USBdisk1
mkdir /Removable/USBdisk2
then insert SD/MicroSD/USB stick again, it is now mounted at the proper location.
The source for AndroidRoot's vendor and device trees is located at https://github.com/AndroidRoot/
And the source code for CM9 is at https://github.com/CyanogenMod .
WK and I will probably open up our own github at some point as well, but for now, we haven't modified anything in the source, so there's nothing to share in that regard. Much like my last rom, we're building this ROM for the learning experience, so feedback is always welcome, but please keep "Thanks!" only posts out of this thread, that's what the thanks button is for. However, if you have additional comments to go after it, like "Thanks, but I have an issue, like blah blah blah...", that's fine. Thank you.

Yeah. Like the first post says, make a folder named MicroSD in /Removable. It requires root, so use ES File Explorer(or other root explorer), ADB, or Terminal Emulator to do it. Any of those should work. Then just insert your microsd again.

Thanks for the support and development , prob gunna flash this soon!!

This is CM9 built from Cyanogenmods sources, not an official build.
I've been using the build for a few hours now and I can easily say it's a little bit smoother.
We hope that ASUS drops the kernel sources soon so that we can get kernels which allows us to overclock, so that we can stretch the quadrant bar even further!

Are you sure? WiFi works perfect here.
Now some stuff that comes with ASUS i like... like Supernote, File Manager is pretty good, Polaris Office, App Locker, and MyNet and MyCloud seem good... Is that all removed (i know you said removed bloatware but did you mean all that came with it?)
This is awesome, Thanks again!!!!!
None of it is in the CM9 source, so no, it's not there. We're going to upload the ASUS apps eventually for your use, but for now it's the bare minimum.
OK then, CM9 has been flashed and is up and running.
1st thing I see after I run the SD card tweak, my battery icon is showing as charging while plugged in to the USB. I just gotta say ME LIKEY!
So far so good folks, big thanks to you all and I'll keep you posted

You're the one who should say what this update is, since you got it. Did it change anything on your phone? Are the issues you had, gone now?
Sent from my Sensation XE.
This update just replaces the old settings.apk, so now there is in security checkbox for installing apks from unknown sources, there might be other changes to setrings apk, but who knows!
Sent from my HTC Sensation Z710e using Tapatalk 2
Please someone post this ota...
only the settings app was updated, some spelling mistakes got fixed, haven't noticed anything else. Still crappy battery, still random reboots, still "android upgrading" on each restart. the ICS update has made the Sensation unusable. I'm currently using my old Desire...
Ok I found the ota and LMW.apk and Settings.apk have changed
The following is confirmed fixed:
Wifi fixes
Wifi no longer turns on automatically (some say this is true, others say wifi still turns itself on so not confirmed fixed)
Spelling mistakes fixed
Install unknown sources checkbox returns for those that lost it
Below is a link to a zip which is flashable in recovery containing the 2 changed files
http://www.liamstears-dhd.co.uk/ics_ota.zip
For lmw read this (thanks Behold_this):
Its the app that controls the "make more space" functions within the storage settings menu (app where you can clear cache, old msg, temporary files and the like). The original app had a bug where if you tried to remove temporary files from sd card, it would delete other files as well.
This above bug is now fixed, confirmed by Behold_this

I didn't have any spelling mistakes on mine but suffered the crappy battery, random rebooting issues. I have reverted back to GB until htc fixes all the problems with the ICS update. I found the random rebooting very annoying and made the Sensation almost unusable. The last stock GB rom was actually very good and stable compared to the ICS one.

What, if anything, have you changed or removed from the original update package? It was 15MB and your's is only 9MB. I'd like to see the official package.
Can someone please post the UNTOUCHED ota zip?

The original app had a bug where if you tried to remove temporary files from sd card, it would delete other files as well. I lost 5GB of music that way (thank goodness for sdcard recovery tools). lol I just lost 3.5gb of music thanks to this LMW app. I didnt get an ota for this file only settings.apk was updated for me why?
I can confirm that I added an app with device admin permissions and the "unknown sources" option in the security menu did NOT disappear, so that bug is fixed. The WiFi hasn't turned back on yet
I wonder if T-Mobile USA got the latest patched update and are testing for their OTA?

Q&A for [ROM][2.3.6] AEON v1.4SL STABILITY AT ITS FINEST
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [ROM][2.3.6] AEON v1.4SL STABILITY AT ITS FINEST. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
Where to go from here
Not sure what happened, hope this didn't get posted twice.
Hi,
I am still happily using the Samsung Infuse 4G, and was running the stock GB 2.3.6. No real issues, and although starting to get a sense of it being dated was having no issues and in no rush to go out and upgrade. However, we recently purchased a 2015 Subaru Legacy with their Starlink multimedia system. The Infuse, as it was with the stock GB had no problems connecting via BT for phone and audio functionality. But, the car system reports that the phone is not compatible for messaging. In my endeavors to understand why, I thought, maybe incorrectly, that GB does not support the MAP profile.
So, that led me to, is it possible to add that, and how do you do it, or is it time to upgrade? Flash a new ROM? I can't seem to find much on the specific issue I am trying to resolve and if a new ROM would fix it, but since the phone is way out of warranty I decided to try rooting and flashing a ROM. I am new to this so I went with the Aeon 1.4 ROM based on GB 2.3.6 (I think), hoping that it was a bit less risky. Everything went well and seems to be working fine. But, it did not fix the messaging issue with the car. I assume because it is really still GB.
Am I going about this wrong? Would a flash up to ICS or beyond possibly do it? I am not totally against a new phone, but till now I wasn't even thinking about a new phone. Suggestions? Which ICS, or other ROM would you recommend? Thanks all.

I think your car requires the newest bluetooth protocol (4.0), something that is primarily hardware based.
I could be (and hopefully am) wrong here, but the only way to find out is to do a ROM walkabout.
ICS is out right off the bat, as bluetooth was borked in that version (IIRC). You'll need to upgrade to that in the process anyway, as CWM for this device doesn't like drastic changes.
I am biased, but I would try CarbonROM 4.4.4 (the latest, unofficial build) or at the very least CM 10.1. The former would have the best chance of support (being latest firmware available), but it may be overkill for your situation (newer versions = harder on battery life).
So I would try CM 10.1 after stepping up to ICS (having done a full nandroid before all this), and if the car still refuses to connect, try Carbon. Then you may be able to prove me wrong.
Hope this helps.

Thanks very much for your reply.
Being a hardware issue is something I have considered, but not knowing enough to understand why it might work virtually flawlessly for phone and audio streaming in the car, I was hopeful the hardware would support additional Bluetooth profiles, that are added with a new ROM. But then again, I would not be surprised to do the walkabout and end up at the store for a new phone in the end anyway.
I will be looking for an ICS ROM, but it sounds like it doesn't matter which one I use because I won't be staying there?
I have done, and will do again, backups, but I am little unclear on a few things. CWM is on the phone, but I actually used ROM Manager for the flashing I've done. Are they the same thing? It uses CWM. Also, I've seen various references to making sure the phones identity (not sure that's the right term) is saved, and I take that to mean that after flashing the phone may no longer be able to access phone carrier service. Is that a real possibility? And, is it necessary to remove the SD card? Thanks again.

I would recommend Entropy's ICS build, which I have a mirror of, accessed from my signature link.
ROM manager loads CWM (same author, ROM manager is IIRC just the Play Store delivery mechanism for CWM), so once you have CWM, you are good to go for your walkabout.
Yes, you want to make sure to back up your IMEI information first, because that stuff can get lost, which if lost, will deny you access to your carrier. There is a way to retrieve it if lost on this device, but an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Check the CM10.x thread on instructions how to flash (with links to the IMEI backup).
No need to remove the SD card, but if you don't need it for a flash, I would remove it anyway (or back up it's contents to your PC first - in case in the unlikely event - I'm paranoid about those things - CWM goes a little liberal with the factory reset).
Hope this helps.

Thanks Joel. I have now installed Entropy. Don't know whether everything else is working, but I do know that I can not connect to my wifi. Keep getting "authentication problem." I see that it is a known problem, but I'm not finding a solution. Not quite ready to go the next step (time constraint), so I'm hoping there is a fix, or at least a workaround. Kind of a bummer not having access to wifi. Any suggestions?

I wouldn't worry about it. Entropy is just a step-through (because BlueTooth is broken as well) and there are other ways to get the other ROMs onto the device (if they are not there already) such as adb push or MicroSD + Built-in Filemanager App. Higher versions will have that fixed anyway.

I don't have a lot on my data plan, so I rely on wifi quite a bit. But for now, not a big deal and will try to upgrade asap. No issues with getting the file to the phone, but I am having some difficulty finding a downloadable CM 10.1 (actually it is 10.2), and a gapps file for it. The XDA forum I went to doesn't work and if I go to the mirror site it tells me the file is too big or something and I'm not able to download. Haven't scoured the internet looking for it, thought I might save some time if you know where I can get it. If not, I'm thinking just try the Carbon ROM, assuming I can find it. I know you recommend CM first. George

Hi George,
My signature link contains the CM10.1 ROM (and Gapps) as well. I had problems with CM10.2 back in the day (wouldn't install), so I would recommend 10.1 over 10.2.
My Dropbox may be exhausted for the day (sometimes it gets like that) but I may have a copy on well, Copy, that I could send if necessary. Just let me know if you have problems downloading from my mirror first.

Hi Joel,
Got it upgraded to CM 10.1. All seems well. Unfortunately, it did not fix the compatibility problem with messaging and our car, as you correctly suggested might happen. Is there anything about Carbon that gives you reason to think it might work? As I said in the original post, I made some assumptions about the problem (Bluetooth MAP profile based on some reading), and that might be a software fix. But, of course, I may be completely wrong about it. Thanks. George

Hello again George,
Nothing about Carbon in general, but KitKat, yes...
Android 4.4 support for two new Bluetooth profiles to let apps support a broader range of low-power and media interactions. Bluetooth HID over GATT (HOGP) gives apps a low-latency link with low-power peripheral devices such as mice, joysticks, and keyboards. Bluetooth MAP lets your apps exchange messages with a nearby device, for example an automotive terminal for handsfree use or another mobile device. As an extension to Bluetooth AVRCP 1.3, users can now set absolute volume on the system from their Bluetooth devices.

I guess it couldn't stay easy. My attempt to install CARBON (two different download versions) failed, I am getting an error I don't understand.
First, when I go to wipe dalvik I get E: unknown volume for .... (/sd-ext) I can not read it very well because of the background image. Where I put the ... it looks like path.
Then
This ROM uses an imcompatible partition layout
Your /data will be wiped upon installation
Run this update.zip again to confirm install
Then
assert failed: run_program("/tmp/updater.sh") == 0
E:Error in /sdcard/CARBON-KK-NIGHTLY-20141102-0915-infuse4g.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.
Any ideas what this means? I can reload CM 10.1, so I am not bricked or anything. I appreciate your help.
I did try to get some help from the IRC forum at CARBON, but haven't gotten any replies.

There's this tutorial (section 27), but what may be happening is a drastic change in ROM's for CWM (which falls under what status 7 error scope - along with corrupted IMEI, etc).
My upgrade path long ago (coincidentally) was Stock -> CM9 -> CM10.1 -> Beanstalk 4.4.2 -> CarbonROM 4.4.4.
You can, however cheat, by disabling voodoo lagfix in CWM settings. Otherwise, you may need to find the oldest CarbonROM Kitkat you can grab (4.4.2), to make that last (small) jump to 4.4.4.
If still doesn't work, roll back to CM10.1, make sure everything is order (including calling), and try again.

I may have to bag this whole project. Must be a little late doing this. Too much time and trouble searching for files that can't be downloaded. I could not find an early CarbonROM KitKat to download. I could not find a BeanStalk to download. I find links that point to a defunct website. I did finally find a CM11 which I did download, but I did not see a gapps file to go with it, unless I can use any 4.4 gapps. Also, when I run CWM there is no reference to lagfix. I appreciate all the help, but I don't want to take any more of your time. George

Hi George,
Any 4.4.2 Gapps will work. I am uploading one right now (along with older Beanstalk and CM11)...
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/smohomrdx0oqn76/AACfrsgXTEHhDmVtwEWj6EA5a?dl=0
...it may take an hour for files to appear, so keep posted, if still interested.
Also, another way to disable voodoo lagfix (if not found in CWM) is to create a folder on internal storage called Voodoo, and then a folder inside that called disable-lagfix.
Hope this helps.

Hi Joel,
Unfortunately, none of these 4.4.x versions will install, same error. And placing Voodoo/lagfix/ folder doesn't seem to work either, same error. If the problem is the jump to the next version is too great, maybe an earlier version of something, 4.2 or earlier? George
