[Q] What is the LOST.DIR on my MicroSD? - Asus Transformer TF700

More a curiosity than a genuine issue but. Ever since I've had a micro SD in my tablet I've had a LOST.DIR added to it which if removed is put back on when I insert it.
Anyone got time to explain what it is. Probably very simple but was just curious a quick search didn't really show much.

Here what I found for you;
"LOST.DIR is created by the fsck utility (fsck = filesystem check)
it contains inconsistent data which was found during the fs check.
This can happen if you not properly reboot or power off the device, or if writing cycles can not be completed. "

So basically if you forget to eject it through the notifications tray, and instead just pop it out. (Like me.)
I was actually wondering the same thing. xD

[Q] Phone keeps losing installed apps on SD card

So I've been having this issue for about a week now. All the apps installed on my phones SD card once I reboot are not loading up. I know the data is still there because the first time that it happened I spent the better part of day freaking out thinking everything was gone gone. At some point I thought of checking of the data by plugging in into the computer. Turns out (1) all the apps miraculously return (2) I can't mount the SD card anymore (3) I can't unmount the SD card anymore either.
What is the deal? It's kind of annoying to lost everything every time you reboot. I'm not really in the mood to tether my phone each time for the unforeseeable future just to keep everything loaded. Has this happened to anyone before? What should I do?

What do you mean, the icons? I'm going to assume that's what you're referring to, for this reply...
If that's what you meant, icons on the home screen take a few seconds to get themselves drawn, if apps are on SD.
You can switch to a different skin then switch back to your original skin, to get them to redraw. Or delete/reposition them one at a time. It's a workaround, but changing the skin temporarily is faster.
It's a sense bug, I'm pretty sure.
Doesn't happen if apps are installed on the phones internal storage, so until they fix it, move your apps onto internal storage, if you don't want to deal with this each time you reboot. They run faster if they're not on your SD anyway.
Unless you have waaaay more apps than you really need, of course.
Sorry should've been a little more specific. The shortcuts on my home screen are all no longer working and I'm well aware of how long it takes for sense to load them up on startup but even when I go to display all apps it only displays the apps on internal storage. In fact each and every app on the card (in the apps settings) has a funny icon that has a little "sd" on it now and just says computing and will not load.
And since writing this I can no longer get the phone to load any apps from the sd card by tethering it to the computer. It's still accessible - just downloaded today's song from amazon and played it - but apps on it are almost like they're gone.
This happens to me sometimes too. But usually when it happens to me I can go into Settings - Applications - Manage Applications and move the troublesome app to internal storage, and then it's fine. It never completely disappears.
It might do you some good to reformat your SD card. Move everything off of it first, then format it, then put everything back on.
Is it the stock 8GB SD card, or a different one?

Yup.
@homeslice976 copied, formatted (made sure it was FAT32), copied everything back and no dice. Same symptoms, Apps will not load.
@zuriken I don't know why you asked about the stock SD card or not, do you think it needs to be replaced? It's only been since February.

full format, chkdsk /f, still nothing though. This is honestly getting to the point where I'm tempted to switch to another phone. Why can't I access my stuff?
Another new bonus, every time I get some sort of alert it now plays random MP3s from the SD card. What is going on...

I'd try a brand new, good quality SD card before resorting to switching phones.
Have you flashed any custom roms or anything? I didn't see you mention either way.

It's gonna be a little while until I can try a new SD card but I'll get back to you.
The only ROM I loaded was the one to originally root that removed the uploading cap from ATT.
I also solved where the random sounds were coming from apparently it doesn't want to play my selected theme and no matter what I do the only one that works is the original HTC default 2010 one or if I download any only the Celesta theme plays... I have a sinking feeling that copying all this funky data isn't going to resolve anything but I'll give it a go.

Good luck.
Since you haven't been messing with multiple roms and such, I don't know what else it could be, other than the SD card taking a dump.

Music on SD Card

I have been wondering for a while, i been noticing that when i put music on my external sd card from my laptop, after i disconnect from the laptop, it some time does not appear on my external sd card, like it was never there in the first place, and when i hook it up back to the laptop it is really not there. Is there something I'm missing, i been searching for a solution throughout the forum, and found nothing. Can someone please help me with this situation.
P.S. If you have a problem understanding my problem, basically I'm asking what is the proper way of putting music on your external sd card for the Infuse 4g. Thanks
Do you have enough space on the SD? I would make a folder in the external to make your music easier to find. I just click and drag into the appropriate card, make sure you properly eject phone when its complete too. It could be a lot of things, usually its something simple.
Yeah I came down to that conclusion, i know it is something simple, that just may be it, because i hardly ever properly eject it. I just normally pull the USB card thinking, whats the worst can happen lol... But thanks
Ya I've screwed my external by just yanking it out before, so I do it right now lol np
I have the same issue, I dragged an dropped each individual track and only one stuck? An when i tell my phone to unmount it, it just remounts it? getting really annoyed

can't see files on SD card

Hi guys.
Whats is the correct way to log on to a SD card?
When I put the SD card of my canon in the dock it fails to notice the card. I have to restart my TF. Then it sees the card. Is this normal?
After that, finding the files on the card seems to be a bit awkward as well.
thanks for your help!
Steven
If the card was not in the tf when you started it, you need to go to the menu and mount it after inserting it. You should also unmount it before removing it just to be safe. This can be done in the lower right task bar.

Just so you know, I know. But if you're going to give cryptic advice might as well not give it at all. May be obvious to you but for someone who doesn't know its not obvious.
OK, But not sure what is cryptic about lower right task bar. There is only one and if you click on it one of the options is mount and unmount SD card.
tnx
That's a good tip. I didn't know where to mount the card.
I'll try that next time. Thanks!!

You said use menu. Which menu? Under settings? In an app that is bleedingly obvious to everyone but newbies?
In fact, nobody uses the word menu for this particular task, so this in itself is cryptic. Please understand that I've been dealing with 1337s and 1337 wannabes ever since I got my first computer. I can sniff out one like a hounddog.

wtf is a 1337?

I've noticed this as well. I notice that if I have the card in, undock and redock it doesn't mount properly. I haven't played with it much, but I think if I eject the card and then undock it works better. Definitely a bug. Rebooting always resolves the issue.
This seems like an unlikely connection, but I have a Canon camera as well. Another annoyance as well is that the SD images don't show up in MediaStore (Gallery).

I use QuickPic. Yoy can choose the included folders.
not solved
so I tried looking in the "menu" after installing the card. No luck. I have to rrestart the TF to make it show up. when i do, it shows up on the task bar.
Also always remember to check theres no boot flags on the sd and its formated correctly i once formatted to ext2 for a project forgot to switch back then wondered why my phone wouldnt read it lol

I use a 600D. It's advised to format the SD card in the cam to erase the images.
Not sure what kind of format that is. (low level?). I'll give it a try.
Mind you. the TF has problems detecting the cam (connected through USB) as well. I have to restart my TF to get working also.

[Q] Apps gone

Hi after having to switch my phone off, when I turned it on again it appears that all the apps I moved to the SD card are no longer there. I have just spent some time downloading them from the market again.
Question is why has this happened and how do I stop it from happening again
Thanks in advance
Solution
Hi Nexus.
I think you'll find that the apps still exist, they're just fragmented on the SD
card. This has happened to me plenty of times.
I've found it's only apps that are installed on the SD card and it's never
happened with apps on the phone's internal ROM.
A good way to check is to go into: Settings- Applications- Manage applications-
then tap the SD card tab. That list shows all of your apps installed on the SD
card. I found that when apps here got fragmented/corrupt they didn't show their
original app icon. Instead they showed the stock android app icon. This is a good
way to tell if the missing apps in question are still there but are just fragmented.
The way to solve this, the way that's worked for me, is to plug the phone into a
pc and mount the SD card as a disk. Then on the PC access the SD card via
explorer and right click- properties- tools- then click de-fragment.
This may take up to 30 mins as it's not as fast as a HDD.
From using this technique my apps have always returned and I can use them
with no problems again.
I've also noticed that this issue only happens if I restart or turn the phone off. I
don't understand what is corrupting the apps as the SD card is mounted
correctly and is the one supplied as standard.
I hope I've helped, and I guess this will save you from re-downloading all of your
apps again.
I'm happy to hear anyone's thoughts/suggestions onto why this is actually
happening in the first place too.
Cheers, Dms
Hi thanks so much for the answer. This has been bugging me for ages and even though I have been searching I have not had any joy solving it until your reply.
As you said it only seems to happen to apps on the sd card, and I would like to know why they are not "persistent" There must be a developer who understands the Android system who can explain why this happens and what you can do to make apps you have on your sd card permanent.
As you said it only happens to me when I re start my phone.
Thanks again for the answer
Hi. It's no problem. Yes I havn't seen anything about this issue being mentioned either.
I'd like to know what's causing it. Whether it's a hardware fault or something in the software.
It's a real pain having to hook it up to my pc to sort it out. Especially when I'm away from a pc, I can't use half of my apps.

SDCard gets into a "Read only" state on random time intervals

Hello everyone, I'm the sad owner of an Osprey terminal (XT1542), it was a gift from my family so I can have a more modern phone and so far it's been more a headache than a good thing.
My problem is that at first I believed it was some random bull**** from the Stock Marshmallow app, using Spotify and trying to download my playlist would end up with my internal storage full because Spotify (and any other app WITH the required permissions to "write" onto the SdCard) couldn't recognize the SD even after it displays it as totally readable, this creates a problem because the camera, the file explorer, even the ADB tool can't write onto the SDCard.
So, after using marshmallow with a 16GB class 10 Kingston SD card I did the following:
Tried every single possible solution to the issue with the vainilla Marshmallow 6.0, that includes formatting the SDcard OUTSIDE the android, different partition size, factory factory reset, nothing.
After failing on that, tried updating marshmallow, Failed, something about the "modem" isn't right on this phone.
So, I did what every XDA user would do, grabbed a brand new Nougat ROM and OGapps mini and installed it on the phone.
I didn't root the phone though....
Failed again, the same issue as before, so "It's the SD CARD YOU MORON" would be the answer here!
Nope. Brand New SDCard replaced with even a newer SDCard (same type) and again, the same issue as before.
As a note if I unmount the SDCard and mount it again via the config>storage option, it becomes "writable" again. For a while...
adb outputs when "push": failed to copy 'log_2017-04-13_OSPREY.txt' to '/storage/4FD8-E1EA/log_2017-04-13_OSPREY.txt': couldn't create file: Read-only file system
So, this leaves us with the simple fact that the issue is... Hardware? Software? Kernel? Maybe if I reset the phone to stock factory fully flashing every single bit of it it would work?
I really need your help in this one guys, thanks for your time.
Greets, let me know if you need any more info or maybe a log on the issue?
Did you REALLY need a poll for this? Seriously?
Did you look for information on this? There are at least a dozen threads on SD card issues on the Moto G 2015 just on XDA, much less the dozens of other threads everywhere else... Here is a quick summary, assuming you have tried clearing the cache partition, factory reset, etc:
50% of the time, it's the SD card itself that is bad, or there is a compatibility issue... Try a different brand, size, speed, etc. The most compatible cards seem to be Samsung EVO+ or EVO Plus series (they are different), PNY Elite series, Lexar 633x or 1000x series, and Sandisk Extreme or Ultra series but again this varies by individual handset. Kingston cards are hit and miss, some people have good luck, others not so much.
40% of the time it's a hardware defect or damage inside the device, nothing you can do but replace the microSD socket which requires micro soldering... Probably best to leave it to professionals.
10% of the time, it's a mixed bag... sometimes a couple layers of scotch tape on the back of the card will help (increases tension on the contact fingers slightly), sometimes it's counterfeit cards (don't kid yourself, this is a HUGE problem, use SD Insight to check), sometimes a U3 card helps, or who knows what else.
The point is, about half the time switching to completely different card fixes the issue, and since microSD card are cheap, especially at the 16GB-32GB card size, so it's a good place to start.
+1
replace card.

I'm in the same boat as you. Tried lots of different brand new SD cards from different vendors, every time the same bug appears. So the only working solution is STICK TO ANDROID 5.x. For some reason Motorola has screwed up the sdcard driver in the kernel, maybe because introducing new fancy features on 6.x and above. I highly suggest you to install CM 12 and keep it on your phone as long as possible. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do with it, unless you are a pro kernel developer.
Maybe this will help you.

I finally found someone with the same problem as me! (well, that's bad news for you and me bad at least I'm not the only one with this problem)
So, you tried everything like me and yet no way to make it work? I couldn't test a different "brand" of SDCard but I did try different ones and checked if they were fake ones and still I have the same annoying problem. Damn...
I think yeah I'll have to go down to an android 5 if there's no way to fix this.
I'm wondering if a custom kernel can solve this, but it's really difficult to know the "why" is this happening, and the logcat doesn't help that much to be honest, at least not from the side of knowing where or what to read that could be causing the issue.
