Hi Fellow Devs,
I would like to port AOSP contacts and dialer to work in the Samsung Roms.
Device Note II N7100/ S III I9300
Android Version 4.1.2
I tried everything...
Using Cyanogen 10, AOSP 4.1.2, and AOKP 4.1.2 builds
but unfortunately none of them work (they disappear from the launcher.
I know there are lots of devs porting it.
Is there anyone who will care to point me out in the right direction?
Like how to do?
I do not want anyone doing it for me.
Just want to learn how to do it.
Any help on this matter is highly appreciated.
Thank you.

Make sure you have apktool or something similar setup already before you dive in. I know ports like these will require you to decompile, edit, and recompile apk's.

I have no problems getting aosp contacts and dialer to work on 4.1.2 ROMs. No FCS and syncs 100% with your Google contacts.
@trentb12
Mate, can you post the instructions here...I know this is off topic...can you post the instructions/Apks...this would rid me of the need to use the cm 10 ROMs completely.

Can you please send me these instructions as well. Thanks. But what I really want to know is how to added touchwiz tablet contacts and dialer to work on touch wiz 4.1.2 Roms specifically the NoWizAOSP rom that I am currently using. Thanks. I will thank your post tomorrow when I have more thanks. I used them all up today.
Can you guys share this information? This is something a lot of people want... keeping it to PM's seems a bit un-XDA :/
Maybe it is off topic but I wonder, would it be possible to extract Samsung's Dialer (Telephone app) and port it to android phone made by another manufacturer?
Samsung has one particular feature that I'm interested in - it's native (operator supported) 3G video calls, a feature that was never adopted in the USA and does not depend on your data plan like Skype, Tango etc. I've got free video calls (charged as regular voice calls) from my (European) operator and I would like to use it.
Any suggestions (apart from using mobile SIP clients which require both parties to have one)?
I think the AOSP Contacts only works, without hassle, on the Note II. I've seen a number of ROMS with it working fine... Modstorm told me he just pushed it and it worked. On my SGS3, it doesn't :/
thats not exactly true - you can ask [email protected] personaly
when I was on TW mixed rom as [email protected] i v got issue with aosp dialer + aosp contacts :
when somebody will give me a ring (from outside my contacts) but I didnt answer
and another person(from out of my contact as well) will do the same I mean was try to phone me but I didnt answer
and after that I will try to recall to them ,phone number on unanswered calls shows to some other person not wich was calling to me .
it is confused to tell about it to but it didnt work right
assume :
no one as I know didnt port right AOSP dialer + AOSP contact to TW roms !
sad true
Yes, but it works to an extent on the Note II. On my SGS3, nothing works :/
Shared user Id seems to be the issue.
From what I've read, for an apk to use this it needs to have the same signature keys as the others...
Now, does this mean we should resign, manually, the whole ROM? Is that even feasible?
Add the Contacts.apk (/system/apk) to your ROM first. You can take it from my ROM if you don't have.
*Sign all the apks in the system/apps folders including the framework-res.apk
*Now you will have to replace all the apks your have in the /system/app folder that updates through the Market(ie All GAPPS, YouTube.apk etc). When I say replace, I mean replace them with the OG apks that aren't resigned
Reason being is that they will not update anymore because the signatures will be different. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY REPLACE THOSE APKS AND LEAVE THE OTHERS ALONE.
Ah, so I was right? You resign everything except market apks? All the Samsung System APK's?
I need to try this.
EDIT:
BAM and like that, it works An easier way is to disable signature verification. No need to resign anything then

It took a little time to get everything set up. It would have been up sooner, but I was out of town for work this week and stuck at a hotel with the slowest download/upload speeds in America (seriously downloading ROMs in number of bytes per second).
Glad to be back home and able to get everything else set up and posted. I hope people enjoy.
Tried it with the cyanogen build and i can get to the end but no update is produced to dl... heavy traffic or maybe theres something else going on

It worked just fine for me (I just double checked, using the CM6 ROM for base to be sure). It does take a little while after you click the 'Serve Me!' button for it to come up. Then it takes you to another page, and says 'Preparing your rom..' for a bit, then the download link will pop up.
When the link comes up, it will still say 'Preparing,' even though it is done. The link comes up on the left side the add box below, so it is easy to miss. It will say 'Your rom is ready for download' and provide a link.
cool idea OP...just wondering about the Cyanogen build. Is it based on the nightly?

Did you upload your own app? If so you HAVE to upload your own app in zip file.
WOW cool idea worked fine flashed fine using damage base. I love it. One thing does it deox?
How about all the basics like zipalign etc? Are those all default to whatever you use as a base?
Some of the base roms you have listed have different versions. As an example is OMJ...he has 3 versions (w/kernel, w/o kernel and deodexed). How can we tell which one is part of the program?
If I can make a suggestion, in so many people here like to theme, if a choice is to be made you use the deodexed versions.

Whenever possible, I have included deodexed versions. I didn't know OMJ had multiple versions, so I will check what is there and update the OP to be more specific about versions for that and others (probably in the morning).

To my knowledge the kitchen does none of those things. I know dsixda's kitchen is a bit more in-depth, including those features, but this is a lot more basic. Assume all ROMs default to whatever the original developer has done (so, for example, Fresh Evo does zipalign on load, but the stock ROM does not).

The CM base that is provided is the release candidate. Check the link in the OP for the post. I cannot keep up with the CM nightlies, so the kitchen will likely only be updated with major releases (if there is a RC2, or when the final comes out). Sorry for the inconvenience.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=746276
So if the base rom that I select already was deox... zipaligned etc etc then I'm safe to assume thats how it gets recooked?
It would be cool if you can take some apps from another ROM and place it into your base ROM..
Very cool implementation of the kitchen. Nice work! One of my favorite features is making stock apps uninstallable by moving them to /data/app. Save you the headache of using adb or something like root explorer to manually delete an apk for something you don't want.
Is there any way that explanations of the files could be posted that are shown. The applications may or may not also make sense as they sometimes use internal HTC names. Yes, I know, asking a lot, but it might help those of us who don't know what all the files listed in the first section are for.
Is there any way to change boot animation? I saw on the Nexus One kitchen it was possible...
Skype Beta?
i saw in the kitchen one of your selectable apps is skype for video calls is there a apk for that anywhere
Little OT but where can i just get the Skype apk you have in your kitchen?
Thanks
everything looks great!
only idea and question which comes to mind as im stepping through the menus and options - version numbers for the applications to be added in?
example, wifi tether - what version number is this?
Would it make sense to have an option to include Netarchy's kernel for the ROMs that didn't already have it?
Does anyone know what controls the ability to click on the address links in the "where" section of the calendar? Cognition is the only rom that does this. I've tried pulling the touchwizcalendar.apk and tochwizcalendarprovider.apk from cognition and putting it on other roms but still no address links. Although, I am able to click on phone #'s that are put in the description area, still nothing for addresses.
Just to clarify, I'm trying to find out how to add the ability to the calendar that when an address is put in the "where" field it automatically becomes a link that will launch maps and do a search for that address. -Thanks in advance
+1 This is one of the very very few features I miss from the Blackberry world. Any ideas?

Yea, I know it's possible because it's working on the cognition rom. The question is how do we transfer the ability to other roms.

Thanks but that's not quite what I'm looking for. There seems to be a way to get this functionality into the touchwiz calendar.
Gemini Calendar or Touch Calendar
Gemini Calendar or Touch Calendar. They both work.
I have the same issues with Galaxy ROMs.
Biggest complain - cannot dial conference bridge codes easily. I'm making manual change in the calendar to have "800CALLME;CODE" and then Copy-Paste to dialer.
Any progress?
Have you had any luck finding a way to add this functionality to the samsung calendar? I am having the same issue with the galaxy s2 and keen to try to work out how to fix it. am assuming the touchwiz calendar is similar on the two devices.
I think that is a feature only on the ATT stock systems which the Cognition ROM closely resembles. I wish I could have this feature but I have never seen it working on any 2.2.1 I9000 ROMS or the newer 2.3.3 I9000 ROMS.
If anyone finds a solution, that would be awesome!
Just to check, are you saying it was an AT&T app separate from the Samsung touchwiz ones on most of their phones?
not really sure. I know that its still a samsung touchwiz app, but it for some reason it only worked when i was on Cog. Im no Dev or anything like that, just an observation I made while flashing
Ive been loking for the ASOP contacts/dialer to replace the HTC Sense but i couldnt find it anywhere. Anybody knows how to replace the app on an unlocked device? I find useless that the HTC contacts doenst sync to my Google account. Also it seems the HTC app merges duplicates in the phone, but no in Google.
With my old G1 i can keep all contacts syncd but not with this phone. I tried to flash Gapps 20110613 but it didnt work. I used Blue6IX_Mod02.zip and Bloater to remove as much crapware as i could but they dont touch contacts either.
Is there anyway to replace the contacts/dialer with the standard ASOP one? If not, do i need to install a GB ROM? I dont have S-OFF since this is a work phone and dont want to mess much with installing a new ROM if is not absolutely needed. Also, I really need to use the camera in Skype, but it seems it doesnt work on the ICS ROMS so i wont touch those for now.
Replacing the HTC Calendar will be nice too
Thanks a lot for your help
I'm not sure what you did, but the HTC Sense contacts most certainly sync with Google, and with Facebook and Whatsapp and Twitter. When I've reinstalled a Sense ROM, I never have to mess with my contacts, as soon as I enter my gmail info, everything starts syncing perfectly. Within 10 minutes all my contacts, my calendar, and even all my downloaded apps, are all right there on my phone.
I think you deleted something you shouldn't.
Sense has some negative points, but the contacts app is not one of them.
When I've used CM7 in the past on different phones, I've always missed the contacts app the most. I love the way it integrates with every major service, collates messages/mails/updates, and just generally kicks the butt of the regular contacts app.
It sounds like you're doing something wrong.

Thanks for the reply, I may be doing something wrong so let me describe the shortcomings I see with the Sense contacts,
1) select a contact, while you are looking at contact details change to another app, now go back to contacts...it doesnt show the contact you have selected, rather it goes to the "matched contacts suggestion" or to the full contacts list. Even if i select dismis all in matched contacts it always brings me back to that screen. If i go to dialer>contacts it goes back to the full list of contacts
2) google contacts groups - nowhere to be seen, specially favorites. Somehow the Sense contacts has its own favorites not syncd with google. With Go Contacts you can see the Google/android favorites why no with Sense contacts?
3)Dialer and contacts show messages and call log ONLY for the native services. I use only Gvoice for calls and SMS, so nobody has my Tmobile number. GVoice is completely integrated with the phone, however the dialer/contacts is not integrated with Gvoice.
4) I also have the HP Touchpad running CM9, with the standard "People" app. Thats a Google native app, with full integration with GVoice and similar layout, why can not i have that in the mytouch 4g? Why do i need to use the Sense contacts?
Im not saying the sense contacts is bad, but i want something else, namely the Google app for contacts. do i need to flash a ROM to get the problems above solved? Or do i need to change anything else on my current settings?
It sounds like you want the Google apps that come with android 4.0 (ics). Since out phone is running gingerbread, flashing those apps will get you nowhere. I'd suggest you try running one of the ICS based roms that are available.

thats plan D ... this is a work phone (so dont want to mess with ROMs, S-ON unlocked is fine since i followed HTCdev.com instructions and for what i hear people dont have any problems getting a replacement form TMobile if something goes wring). Also i need Skype/GTalk videocalls and none of the ICS roms i saw have that working. Thats why i was asking for the AOSP contacts.apk or similar. I think it should be somewhere since my old G1 with CM7 uses the google contacts app fine. But im not sure if there is an apk for 2.3.4 AND if i can just replace the Sense files or it will give me any other trouble.

Hi all!
Although I am an old user here, this is my first post/thread about my new Galaxy Note 10.1
Ok so our beloved note is supposed to be work oriented and one of the most used perspective of that is Emails I guess.
However this one has a major flow (on stock ROMS) and that is the absence of any spell checker!
I know there's swype and many other features, however spell checker is still an important feature!!!
To make myself clear (if someone didn't understand what I mean), we miss the feature where the wrong typed word is underlined in thin zigzag red line. Once you click on it, many suggestions pop up to replace the wrong word.
This exists on PC, outlooks, word etc.., and exists even on AOSP, CM and all related roms! It even exists on iPad!!!
To ease the way, someone in S2 forums has done it on stock Touchwiz ROM. Look here: PRESS HERE
In this thread he outlines the method he used. I guess it requires AOSP keyboard and libraries as well as modifying the framework and maybe settings apk.
Besides he shows advanced ways of disabling it in browser URL links and contacts app and etc...
Please developers look into this and make it happen, at least for the 4.1.2 ROMS. This is a major feature that we need to have, especially when typing!
I really dunno SAMSUNG what was thinking when it removed this feature from AOSP android!!! I mean this tablet was meant for these things!!!
Thank you!
+1. Hell...+20.
I was looking for spell check the other day when sending out an email. Would definitely be nice. I am not sure how Samsung missed this one
Its mind blowing that such a basic feature is missing from all the Samsung devices! +100 on this request

I'm an "Old User" as well, and although no spell checker is not quite a deal-breaker, it will sure add a lot of time to everything I need to do with this new tool/tablet...SO: I'll add my voter to whatever a +100 does
+1000 hell yeah! A grammar checker would be wonderful too! A girl can dream.

Well the mentioned method as well as the method I mentioned in OP are the same! However I am no developer and I really dunno what decompile means and how it is done!
However, I will look into it later on when I have some time.
I would pay for this feature if it was added. I really miss having a spell checker.
I found an app called Ginger Grammer and Spelling.. you can find it in the play store. Just haven't been able to make it work on my Note 10.1. Anybody willing to try it and tell me if it is just my device?

Hi,
This is my first android app and my first app announcement on XDA so apologies in advance if I've broken any rules.
I've ported the stock messaging app and then added some enhancements and changes so it can (hopefully) work on any Jelly Bean phone. This app is downstream from the latest Android 4.3 and CyanogenMod 10.2 (not-yet-released as of writing).
(ICS compatibility is a possible future feature.)
Please have a look if interested and feel free to try it out.
The Play Store link is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Excerpts from the app description follows ...
Notable features
Notification pop-ups
Quick reply
Gesture based templates
Emoji support
Optional dark theme
Install this app if you want to use features from the latest Android messaging app without having to wait for a full phone software update.
Usage
Whilst 88sms is a replacement for the messaging app that came with your phone, it is actually an add-on application only.
Please do not disable or remove the messaging app that came with your phone as that is still required to receive sms and mms messages.
88sms works best if you turn off notifications for the messaging app that came with your phone. Then you won't get two sets of notifications.
Phone compatibility
This app may not work (yet) on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. If you install this app on one of these devices, please let us know if it works.
If you install this app on your phone and it does not work, please let us know. Please be sure to specify your phone model and software version number, and the version of 88sms you have installed.
Permissions
This app requires a wide range of permissions because it is a port of a system app. System apps use a lot of permissions. Full network access is required in order to send (or download) mms using your phone's cellular data (mms) connection.
Thank you.

FC on startup on i777 running JB 4.1.2
I can get to the conversation if I click on the incoming text notification; however trying to switch to the conversations list causes immediate FC.
Great job, this is the perfect SMS I've been looking for for years.

Any updates Dev?! Would loveeeee for this to be my daily driver messaging app, t is what I've been looking for, for a long time... an AOSP 9like messaging app, but I can use it on a TouchWiz ROM! Just wish MMS worked though
