Tec Tiles not compatible - Galaxy S 4 Accessories

http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/27/samsung-galaxy-s-4-drops-original-tectile-support/
Long story short, original tec tiles use some proprietary tech and the NFC chip in the GS4 con only use tech that is standardized. Samsung is supposed to release an updated version of the Tec Tiles at some point.
I hope my non-samsung NFC tags from tagstand are compatible.

Someone posted a question about this in the "Q&A" sub forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2253603 and I posted a link to an article about this earlier today. I also Emailed "Tags for Droid" about it and they Emailed me back saying that they have listed warnings about certain tags not working with the S4 (mainly Mifare tags), however they say their NTAG203 tags will fully work with the S4. Samsung claims it is a question of NFC standards and the Mifare tags are not considered within NFC standards.
Again, according to TagsForDroid their type 2 NTAG203 tags should fully work with the S4 as well as the TecTile2 tags that Samsung should be releasing withing the next week or 2.

In July, 2012 I purchased the NFC Hobbyist Starter Kit from tagstand. I will post back here Monday after I try them out on my GS4. I previously used them with my EVO 4G LTE and the app NFC Task Launcher and they were terrific.

Both the free Tectiles I got from Samsung for my GS3 and the tags I got from TagsForDroid do not work. Guess I'll give them to someone with a GS3

It depends, what kind of NFC tags are included in the Hobbyist kit? I went to Tagstand's site but couldn't find any info about the type of tags that are included in the kit.
If you want to avoid any nasty surprises, you can download the app TagInfo from Google Play onto your EVO or any other device that's not a Nexus 4 or GS4. Open the app and Read the Hobbyist tags that you have.
If it says "Type 1,2,3 or 4" tag under the INFO tab (1st attachment), then they should work fine with your GS4. If it says "Mifare Classic" (2nd attachment) then you're out of luck.

Unfortunately, the EVO I had is busted. I fell while it was in my pocket and an almost undetectable dent on the back side rendered the phone into a worthless brick. Needless to say, I'm a much bigger fan of a plastic battery door over an aluminum unibody design.
Back on topic, my tags from tagstand work just fine with the app NFC Task Launcher. I didn't even have to reprogram them. They just work. I'm a happy camper.

That's good to hear! In that case the tags must be NFC Forum Type 1,2,3 or 4 then.
Plenty of GS4 owners seem to be having compatibility issues with the Mifare Classics.

[Q] Google Wallet

do you guys think Google Wallet will support our device?
Nope, our phone doesn't have an NFC Chip
Doubt it. You need a NFC chip to use the phone to make payments. I tried it last weekend on my Nexus S. It was pretty cool - the Home Depot clerk nearly crapped her diapers when I paid for my item using my phone. But then again, it's kind of a novelty unless more NFC scanners are deployed.
man i was really getting excited for it. but again there are some accessories for the iphone to be NFC and works excellent i wonder if something like that would help the g2x
At first, I was a little sad to see we don't have the tech for it in our phones. But then I got to thinking, "it doesn't matter anyways." I mean, there aren't a whole lot of places that have implemented it right now. Maybe in about 2 years time (when my contract expires and it's time to update the phone) it will be widely implemented. But for now, there's just not a whole lot of use for it.
We would need a nfc dongle, which isn't impossible I might add. It could work via USB.

I was wondering why CM7 w/ 2.3.7 didn't include Google Wallet. I think overall just trying the NFC payments is what we want.

WiDi app - saw one recently, can't find it again

I saw an app within the past week or two on either this thread or reddit.com/r/android and I can't find it again. I tried the search on both sites and can't find it. If anyone can help, that'd be great.
It's a wireless display or WiDi app for tablets and phones. It was compared to the Samsung Galaxy S3's display sharing capabilities and I believe it was mentioned it used the Miracast standard. It wasn't compatible with my phone, so I didn't save it. But I think I have something else that it could work with. It listed the Samsung Galaxy Nexus (i think), Nexus 7, and Galaxy S3/note series devices as supported. The app might have been developed by a small group or, not a larger company.
Thanks

Actually, thanks for the suggestion but no that wasn't quite it. Was looking for an app. I found it but I was way off what it was meant for. I can't wait for miracast products to take off though.

NFC Tags

hi all
Amazon has a great deal on xperia NFC tags .. I just wanted to know if these would be compatible with nexus 4

They work with a Galaxy Nexus (as mentioned in one of the reviews) so although I haven't tried it personally on the Nexus 4, I'm betting they should work fine. The main ones to watch out for are the MIFARE 1K style NFC tags, which reportedly don't work.
Damn they don't ship to Australia.

Sony smartTags; It are mifare UL tags with an id to work with Sony smartTag app. Install free smartTag app. Or format to use with other nfc apps. They are not locked.
In case anyone was wondering, these should work perfectly with the Nexus 4. I've got some on order, and will post my results when I get them.

Order through the NFC task launcher app, I just got their hobbyist pack (don't do this by the way since it includes 5 mifaire 1k tags which are useless for us) through their website but through the app you get a 20% discount which means your first 4 tags (really think about how many you need and remember that a single tag can do multiple operations) are ~$4 not including shipping.

[Q] android beam and nfc? and a sidenote question

im new to the photon q and im trying to figure out the beam feature. Ive been googling to try and find it out but I cant get any info on the photon specifically. i tried to beam a picture to my sisters s3 and it opened up the the play store and said search not found or something similar. when she sent one to me it would send me to the same place or it would say that my device cant receive large format files or something like that.
it sent webpages just fine but wouldnt do pics. is this because they are on a newer version of android?
as a side note question is this phone a legit contender in the smart phone world? I bought it from best buy to give it a try because they let you try it for 30 days and if you dont you can exchange it for somethign else. Is it in league with the s3? is it crap? I like the keyboard a lot and hate to not have one but I need to upgrade because my beloved epic is dying. what are your opinions on the phone? versus the s3? some other valid contender?
thanks all
I like it, but I'm a whore for a keyboard.
AFAIK the NFC chip in this thing is completely useless. Doesn't work with Google Wallet, and I seriously doubt if it'll work with the S3. I'm betting Sammy's NFC sharing only works with other Sammy devices....
that kinda sucks. its far from a necessity to have it but it would have been cool. is it a hardware thing or software do u know?
I talked to someone at sprint about the NFC once b/c I was tryna do the same with a s3. They basically told me that its not compatible b/t ics and jb b/c of the way the data is compiled, sent and received or something like that. It's been so long since I was told about it. Ics to ics yes that is supposed to work but not ics to jb.

Uhm... That's not true at all. When the S3 was on ICS, it didn't work. Whenever we get JB, it still won't work with the S3. Again, AFAIK the Samsung beam is proprietary to Samsung.
At any rate, I am hoping it's just a software issue. We have the NFC chip, and I don't believe the chip itself is crippled... but I am just speculating at this point. I do not know for a fact, just wishful thinking! :good:

Hey, the N7's NFC worked with the Photon Q...? That's impressive! So it seems we have a regular NFC chip, perhaps it's just Google Wallet that doesn't work... Wonder why?
Google wallet is typically blocked as per the carrier because they have or are about to have their own NFC payment method (like Verizon and Isis).
Also, the GS3 uses its own funky thing for NFC. The Q's NFC works the same as any other device, so things like Android Beam work. GS3 uses S Beam or whatever they call it, which only works between GS3 devices.
To answer OP's additional question, yes, this phone is up there on the top of the "powerful smartphones" list. The screen has a lower dpi than most, but it makes up for it with the processor. The only faster chips on the market are the S4 Pro (in the DNA and Nexus 4) Exynos 5 (Nexus 10).

That sounds kinda sorta along the right idea. From what I've read jelly bean enhances NFC for larger file transfers by automagically initiating a Bluetooth connection between the devices to send data like pictures.
Here's the fist link I found that briefly mentions it too.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/27/google-details-jelly-bean-nfc-features-android-beam-upgrade-ta/
So yes, in essence NFC is useless for us with ICS, you could send contact info (like palm pilots used to do with IR), web links, and other very basic textual information and that's it for now, the larger things should be doable once we get jelly bean hopefully at some point in the first half of this year.
Samsung's S Beam uses wifi direct to make a connection as opposed to the bluetooth connection made with Android Beam.
Wifi Direct can send a hell of a lot more data at a faster rate than bluetooth. U can download the app "wifi direct" from the app store and send photos, movies, etc.
i sent a website to my friends tmobile galaxy s3 with NFC enabled on both devices just by touching the backs. it DOES work on this phone

Samsung Pay on the Gear S2

Many of you probably don't watch Korean dramas but they tend to have LOTS of product placements in them. Here's a recent one with Samsung Pay being used on the Gear S2. Looks like it'll pay through NFC.
That's funny. you know which drama? My wife watches them but I just find them silly. They always got the product placements but they have to cover the brand name. So it will be so obvious everyone is using Galaxy Edges but they got to put tape on everyone's phones covering up the name Samsung.

Speaking of Gear S2 and Samsung PAY. I'm I correct in thinking this will only work with NFC readers? Here in Los Angeles California area 95% of the places don't have NFC card reader or most of them are disabled by the vender to not accept NFC. I have been using Samsung PAY beta here for several weeks and I like it but wondering if the watch will have a limited Samsung pay only to be used with NFC vs. also having MST antenna in it.

S2 needs to be paired to a Galaxy phone and used on an NFC terminal for Samsung Pay to work. The tech that uses the magnetic strip terminals is too big for a watch.

Yeah was afraid of that. Looks like I'll continue to use my phone for Samsung pay rather then watch. I'm going to guess that its 5% or less that I have even used NFC vs. MST. It's just not an option around here.

LOL all the of Samsung phones(S6, S6E/E+, Note5) in the drama have the logo on the front covered up. It was also very funny how everyone was using the S6 and S6E in the first 10ish episodes then suddenly they ALL have a Note 5.
Does anyone know how to get Samsung Pay to work on the Gear S2? I have had the beta for weeks and use it every day on my phone but I can't figure out how to get it on my watch. I frequent many stores that use NFC for payment. When I touch the watch on the terminal it beeps but doesn't do anything. I have no way of selecting a card.

Sad to say but yes... There isn't a way to set up Samsung Pay on the watch itself
I have the full Samsung Pay app installed on my Note 5, yet when I go to tap & pay, it says no app installed. I'm guessing that means I have to install the app from the Gear App store, which does not seem to have that app..... Anyone else get their tap & pay set up on their watch?
No luck for me either... I guess we'll have to wait a bit more....
I saw a few reviews that stated it will be a separate app made specifically for the Gear S2 and will come in November. So it looks like now we wait.

I unable to get mine working too, its saying app isn't installed but i do have the Samsung pay installed and working on the phone with no issues and searching the Gear S2 apps store - there is no any payment app. currently to install.
Its not available till first quarter next year per Samsungs twitter page. Which sucks!
I hope they've miniaturized the looppay device so it can be used in the Gear S2.
