Step by step guides already exist in the forum, follow them carefully.
In short, you have 2 options:
Upgrade to ICS, you'll have both stock roms and custom roms with all 3d features
or
Upgradre to JB, you'll have only custom roms without almost every 3d features.

Is it still possible to root the captivate if i flash to the new build? I just got this phone and I really want to do both of these..lol. Please someone let me know. I already downloaded the guide from this site. So I just want to know if I get the new build, is it possible to follow the same root instructions that are for 2.1? Thanks in advanced.

Yes it's still possible to root, but with a different ( more complicated ) method as of now. It's not the same as rooting on 2.1. You can find couple of threads regarding rooting froyo in development section.
Hello all!
Few questions:
1. Could any one list down What the procedures (from stock) are to boot with Custom ROM?
I had read lots of posts here, which made me much more confused thn. Sorry for being such a noob. I m not getting a clear picture of what needs to be done from start to have new custom ROM(say ICS).
2. And would my phone get FOTA updates with custom ROM?
3. List of some awesome custom ROMs? I could find loads in xda yet need the best.(Yes! it depends on person)
Thnx!!!

HERE try my custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466917
the procedure are in there too and if u follow it precisely should be no problem
I followed the guide to S-OFF but i got "FAILED TO ROOT " message.
So I followed HTC dev steps to unlock bootloader. Now my device got unlocked yet S-ON since HTCdev procedure allows to unlock only certain features.
What to do next??
appreciate any help???
Current ROM on my device is stock v1.52.720.3 and HBOOT as 1.18.0000
I guess here is the problem, when can I expect an updated Revolutionary?
sad sad
So my friend rooted my phone for me and installed a custom rom that supports a language I needed (arabic).
It turns out that the 4.0 carries that language and I have been having a lot of problem with the current rom. If I want to upgrade to 4.0 how can go on with this?
Also, I would like to stay rooted because from what I understand, if I am rooted the phone is unlocked and I am planning on going overseas for a month and so it would be nice to have a unlocked phone with me.
I really appreciate all the help guys thanks!
First of all, there is no stock 4.0, unless you mean ICS 4.0.x. Because of the vague information, I assumed you meant sense 4.0.
Second of all, you need to provide some info, and why can't your friend fix it for you? I have no idea what's currently on your phone. If you're running gingerbread, then you'll have to do a firmware update + rom update. You've provided us the fact that your friend put a rom on there for you. That does not help one bit. What rom? and again, why can't he fix it? Normally, it's pretty easy to update the rom, there are tons of instructions provided in the forums. I would suggest looking around. The only hard part for you may be the firmware updating... Since you appear to have no idea what rom you're running, myself and others won't know how to help at all. You want to update to this "4.0" with little to no information provided. Fyi, phone rooted does not mean the phone is unlocked. You'll have to double check that, Good luck!
ps. your title is even more confusing. Are you getting the 4.0 OTA and asking if it's okay to update? or are you asking HOW to update? I'm assuming you're asking how to update lol
Ermm, this type of question (correcting: exactly this question) had been asked (and answered) a couple of times

I apologize for being vague here are info on my phone.
I am on Android Version 2.3.7
Baseband version: 10.56.9035.00
Kernal Version 2.6.35.13_CyangenMod+
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-SelfKANG10-Sensation
Build Number: GRJ22
I am trying to update to the new version which is ICS for my sensation. I am not sure if it's out or not though.
I guess my question is:
Do I have to unroot my phone to use ICS?
if not, can you please point me to where I can follow a guide to do this?

Since you are unsure of what you are doing, I wouldn't advise you to try since you do run the risk of "Bricking" your device if something goes wrong - Your Choice!
Having stated that, if you really do want to install ICS:
1. Install firmware 3.32 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
2. Install a CUSTOM Recovery.
3. Choose your ROM - There are a few Sense 3.6 ROMs but no Sense 4.0 with no bugs (FAIK).
You should really Search the Development thread and choose a ROM which suits YOU as everyones needs/wants are slightly different. Most ROMs tell you what you need to install and there already guides on how to do it.
You could follow the guide from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298
Here are also a couple of good thread with tons of info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1542555
ROOTING only unlocks the ability to change files stored anywhere on the phone, you need to SIM UNLOCK if you intend to use a different carrier or possibly in a different country. There is a thread in development on how to do this for free too!!!
Hope this helps

Not sure why you'd want to do this, when you can just install a room based off of the official release like ARHD. You'd retain root and also get all the awesome features included in the ROM that HTC won't add in there.

I've also heard of phones being severely bricked after updating from stock. Actually, I've worked on them. They were galaxy s prevails, though

just install android revolution HD
it offers stock experience but on a custom rom

here is the link you will also find link to download full stock rooted
Okay, Let me start by saying two things. Yes I'm new to this. And yes I looked in the forums for something similar.
Now, basically I just recently rooted my Samsung Galaxy S 4G. It is Model SGH-T959V, Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband T959VUVKB5, Build FROYO.VUVKB5. There are a few things I was wanting to ask the community.
Is it possible or a good idea to update it to JB, ICS, GB. And if so what are the benefits and procedures to do so?
Secondly, I've been looking into getting some custom roms. So far the only things I have found haven't been comprehensible. They either require a higher firmware version, have no explanation as to what the rom does, or have highly technical steps which are way beyond me. Does anyone have any recommendations as to what would be some good roms? What they do? And the benefits of using them?
If this has all been discussed somewhere else and have just missed it, please feel free to link to the thread and close this one.
ok i see you are new to the concept of flashing and rooting ....etc) you should try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001759

First, you should start here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1470716 Second here http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V now you have all the source of instructions and guides to follow all you have to do is take some time to read and search. and now good luck to you and your phone..
Well, as for the Odin thing a lot of people have said it can brick your device, and that's not something wanna do.
As for the other guides, I started it, I got to the point where I'm updated to GB 2.3.6. The rest of the stuff didnt say what it was for, so I was unsure as whether or not to proceed. Are they required for flashing ROMs? Or just extra stuff?
The last one didn't seem to have anything really useful, but I didnt look at every last thing.
And what about useful ROMs? I've looked around online and a lot people recommend Cyanogenmod, although no one has said what it does. I looked at the steps and it seemed over complicated to install for someone new to this stuff.

In this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959V it will guide you to rest of Custom rom's and kernel's that you must need to use in order to
start flashing custom rom and kernels. the rest is a guide which you can use and it will save you'r time from looking around.. The only rom which is very much stable to our phone are
GB and ICS while Cyanogenmod 10/10.1 are still in Alpha and beta stage..
Yeah, I saw that as I looked through it more. Just a lot of it is way over my head so it's gonna take me a while to get to it
That's right, you will never get lost by following that guide because everything you need to know are already in there.. just take some time to read and you
will be enlightened as you go on the process..
Well, my biggest problem is I keep looking for useful and cool ROMs, but haven't found any so far. So at the moment I can justify to myself to go through all those things just to not have anything to put on it. So far I like the GB look and feel much better than FROYO. I've found a few minor apps here and there, but so far nothing that has required flashing.
Or you can check some of the great ICS rom's we have, here i am going to provide some links of it for you.

2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1404863

This are just few of the rom's we have that i personally try and use it by myself, but you can have as much as you like and you can take a look at the development section and hand pick some
of the great rom's courtesy of our great dev's..
Cool, I'll check out those GB ones. Thanx
Good luck and make sure to follow as per OP's instruction of flashing the respective rom's to avoid further problem, u won't get lost as every instructions are provided
for the ease of use and flashing.. and take some time to each and every rom you flash so that you can personally experience the goodness and you can make a choice which rom you think it's best for you..
Hello All, I have my friend's phone which is a LG P925G from Canada - Rogers (Unlocked). I am unable to upgrade the firmware using the LG Mobile Support Tool, it downloads the firmware all the way to 100% and gives an error unable to install and phone gets disconnected. Below are the information of the phone.
Android Version - 2.2.2
Software Version - LG P925g-V10-Jul-20-2011
Please let me know if there is anything which I need to do to resolve this or is there any custom firmware which I can install instead of using LG Support tool.
There are many ways; this is one way for ICS
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39269819
and you learn to flash in the process.
If you want to stay with stock ICS just skip the part about installing the rom. (It's very good, however).
LG has not released official JB for this phone so if you go with a JB rom you lose much or all of the 3D function (devs are working on that issue too, last time I checked). But if that does not matter to you....

Hi Drastic00, I have successfully upgraded the phone to ICS. Thanks to your tutorial.
Recheck part 1. If you can avoid Win 8, do it, or follow the tips provided.
If you can post over there I will respond quicker, and it is better regarding forum rules. But I'll be sleeping for a while
Check all details thoroughly. Driver part is critical.
Make sure you have a good cable and usb port too.
