Well..I am currently using a generic (not branded) HTC Sensation with the Gingerbread 2.3.4 stock ROM. I was previously using a SE Xperia X8 so I'm quite a noob to the Sensation ..
So, I want to install a custom ROM to my phone and have been doing a lot of reading to get hold of a point from where to start. But, still I am quite confused as for what should I do prior to installing a custom ROM..For instance I can relate that for the X8, I first had to root the phone, unlock the bootloader, install a nAa kernel and finally install a custom ROM. But, even after doing a lot of reading, I still cannot find such a sequence (maybe I haven't done enough reading ) for the Sensation. I am so confused with S-On and S-Off, clockwork, unlocking and SuperCID and all those stuff .
So I would really appreciate if someone can help me out and tell me what should I do to install a custom ROM to my phone from the beginning.
P.S. - I searched for threads related to this topic but was not quite satisfied with the answers I got. That's why I thought of posting a new thread. Hope I haven't violated any thread rules.
Sorry for being such a noob
And thanks in advance!

1. You shoud unlock your phone and get s-off first
2. Flash custom recovery and backup your phone data first (use custom recovery)
3. Flash adequate firmware
4. Flash the custom rom.
There are very clear guides in the Sensation android development forum. You can find enough information and files there. Good luck and enjoy your phone flashing!

Just a little question, don't I have to unlock the bootloader prior to or when following these steps? or is it already included in these steps??
Its included in those steps.

So my friend rooted my phone for me and installed a custom rom that supports a language I needed (arabic).
It turns out that the 4.0 carries that language and I have been having a lot of problem with the current rom. If I want to upgrade to 4.0 how can go on with this?
Also, I would like to stay rooted because from what I understand, if I am rooted the phone is unlocked and I am planning on going overseas for a month and so it would be nice to have a unlocked phone with me.
I really appreciate all the help guys thanks!
First of all, there is no stock 4.0, unless you mean ICS 4.0.x. Because of the vague information, I assumed you meant sense 4.0.
Second of all, you need to provide some info, and why can't your friend fix it for you? I have no idea what's currently on your phone. If you're running gingerbread, then you'll have to do a firmware update + rom update. You've provided us the fact that your friend put a rom on there for you. That does not help one bit. What rom? and again, why can't he fix it? Normally, it's pretty easy to update the rom, there are tons of instructions provided in the forums. I would suggest looking around. The only hard part for you may be the firmware updating... Since you appear to have no idea what rom you're running, myself and others won't know how to help at all. You want to update to this "4.0" with little to no information provided. Fyi, phone rooted does not mean the phone is unlocked. You'll have to double check that, Good luck!
ps. your title is even more confusing. Are you getting the 4.0 OTA and asking if it's okay to update? or are you asking HOW to update? I'm assuming you're asking how to update lol
Ermm, this type of question (correcting: exactly this question) had been asked (and answered) a couple of times

I apologize for being vague here are info on my phone.
I am on Android Version 2.3.7
Baseband version: 10.56.9035.00
Kernal Version 2.6.35.13_CyangenMod+
Mod Version: CyanogenMod-7.1.0-SelfKANG10-Sensation
Build Number: GRJ22
I am trying to update to the new version which is ICS for my sensation. I am not sure if it's out or not though.
I guess my question is:
Do I have to unroot my phone to use ICS?
if not, can you please point me to where I can follow a guide to do this?

Since you are unsure of what you are doing, I wouldn't advise you to try since you do run the risk of "Bricking" your device if something goes wrong - Your Choice!
Having stated that, if you really do want to install ICS:
1. Install firmware 3.32 from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459767
2. Install a CUSTOM Recovery.
3. Choose your ROM - There are a few Sense 3.6 ROMs but no Sense 4.0 with no bugs (FAIK).
You should really Search the Development thread and choose a ROM which suits YOU as everyones needs/wants are slightly different. Most ROMs tell you what you need to install and there already guides on how to do it.
You could follow the guide from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472298

ROOTING only unlocks the ability to change files stored anywhere on the phone, you need to SIM UNLOCK if you intend to use a different carrier or possibly in a different country. There is a thread in development on how to do this for free too!!!

Not sure why you'd want to do this, when you can just install a room based off of the official release like ARHD. You'd retain root and also get all the awesome features included in the ROM that HTC won't add in there.

Hi All.
I'm an iphone hacker/Jailbreaker and i own an original iPad , iPhone 3G & an ipod touch 4.
But i lately bought an android phone (HTC Sensation XE + Beats audio) .. and yes,.. im a n00b at androids..
so i came to XDA Forum so i can have more knowledge about android ....
So . my phone was in GB , it was working perfectly . until i updated it to ICS.... Battery drains fast .... wifi is not working anymore ... when i connect to a network ... it automatically disconnects from it ..... (yes ,.. this is annoying) , but when i remove my SIM Card out of the phone ... wifi works perfectly with no problems..
So i heard about the "WiFix" (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1445766) which fixes this issue .. but it requires a rooted phone.
Here's my phone's details :
ICS 4.0.3
HBoot 1.27.0000
S-ON
Locked
So , i have some questions (because i don't wanna lose/brick my phone & have a try in the Android "world" , and also i'm a noob ) :
-Does Rooting affects my phone's performance / bricks it?
-If there's any rooting method available for my phone .... is rooting enough to fix this WiFi issue?
-i Heard about the "Android Revolution HD" and its battery mod....etc... but does installing/Flashing this OS to my phone is suitable for it? or just rooting it & installing the WiFix would be enough ?
Please Answer , any Help Would be Greatly appreciated .
As for rooting and performance yes rooting will affect it for the better! I was so surprised how custom roms are FAR more stable than stock! You get a smoother faster over all better experience with a custom rom. I don't regret rooting for a second. Its all about customization .you don't like something change it it gives wonderful freedom! Thanks to the developers there are so many choices to fit so many different tastes. Its wonderful.
Look in search and you will find a guide for your boot version. With your boot yes it is possible to root just a bit different from the usual way to s off.many people have been successful with the guide once you have rooted and s off if you choose you can then install a rom and mod if you like.

check the SOFF section from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1716955
typically two methods
SON with HTC-dev unlock --then rom
SOFF --then rom (SOFF again two methods - with/without HTC-DEV )

to do so, you just flash a ROM through recovery. whether that be CWM (ClockWork Mod) or 4EXT touch.
pretty easy. as custom ROMs come pre-rooted, you won't need to worry about the rooting part. just the S-OFF thingy and flashing a custom recovery i previously mentioned.
Hello,
First of all, thanks for this great forum, i'm new to android and being here is really helpful.
I've read some of the guides posted, still i'd like to have some tips and infos.
I'm from Italy and my Desire S is still working on Gingerbread (!). I would like to update the firmware, if not to Jelly Bean (since the custom one is still beta, but advise me here), at least to ICS, but i don't know the routine to follow (ROOT, then Flash one of the custom ROMS? Being in S-Off mode is needed i guess). Another thing i don't get is flashing radios..
Help would be really appreciated, THANKS.
There is nothing to tell you that you can't find by reading the stickies and understanding what to do.

If you haven't messed with your phone, i.e. rooted it, flashed any fancy thirty party rom, etc, and the phone is running official HTC ROM and in the exact same state as you bought it, I'd suggest OTA and upgrade to official ICS since you are new to android. Go to setting - about phone then update from there.
If you'd like to try other ROMs then there's plenty guide in this forum already.
Imo official 4.0.4 is a bad idea.
1) It has bugs
2) hboot 2.02 cannot be downgraded without htcdev

My Desire S is new and "untouched". For what i had got, the official htc release is to be installed manually and has some issues, so I had thought a custom and more recent ROM would have been better.

Then use revolutionary (S-OFF) not unlock via htcdev.com, 4ext recovery and you are good to go
If you are on Sense 3 you will have to downgrade in order to use Revolutionary.io
And of course I concider the ROM in my signature as the best to date

If you are going custom better not use OTA
Revolutionary will install custom recovery so the next thing will be a backup of your stock ROM and installing the Rom.zip from the sdcard via the recovery. No rooting, because all custom ROMs are pre-rooted.
My ROM is ICS, there is no complete stable JB yet but once you have s-off you can try them all within minutes. And do not forget to sync/backup your data (contacts, etc) to Google or with some app from the Play Store. And read some guides before starting anything. I am just giving you directions not a tutorial

So why do you "root"? Just to unlock the phone without touching the FW?
Going custom i guess it's the only way, because htc is not going to update anymore, so better learn how to.

Yes you can root your current software (the stock one) if you need just root for an app or something specific without changing the software.
But going custom means to run Android and Sense version which you will never have officially. And they all come pre-rooted

The best app for applications and data backup is titanium backup. It also allows you to make a flashable update zip you can flash after installing a new rom

Nandroid backup is a part of the recovery and not an app.
Start reading instead of asking, please. The procedure is covered a million times in a million places.
To the answering guys, (almost) off-topic:
I have a riddle for you, or actually, a somewhat sad observation to share and see your opinions. Since this thread is one of the examples for what I'm going to talk about, and it's useless anyway, I won't feel any remorse diverting it.
I've seen several threads during the last couple of weeks where a random noob got the best out of one of the knowledgeable members of the community - in this and other forums - and they helped him instead of sending him to read stuff that he was supposed to be reading to know the answer.
In absolutely all of those threads, noob questions continued and deteriorated to the most basic ones. There wasn't even one thread where the noob wouldn't continue with flood of basic FAQ-sort of questions.
I've wrote in a couple of them more or less what I wrote here - an unpleasant message to stop the flood of baby questions.
All of the noobs were offended.
All of the noobs actually searched and found their answer after that message, and stopped the flood (with a message that here, they were so great they actually found everything themselves).
It's kinda sad, don't you think? Quite a few times bad treatment seems the most efficient way to achieve the best results... Guess there's no miraculous other way I'm missing, or maybe there is?
(P.S. I'm also moderating a local motorcyclists forum, and keeping the same harsh line in technical sub-forum. Works 100% for >5 years already. But sometimes it gets you wondering about human nature...)

Hi guys
Just trying to put a new ROM on my HTC Desire S, I have been using Cyanogenmod 7.2 and was trying to get either the official UK MIUI 4.0 ROM or Cyanogenmod 10 (experimental) working, both installed but neither would boot (stuck on HTC boot screen).
Managed to get an old MIUI running on it for the time being but still want one of the ones above.
My question is, do I need to upgrade to the official android 4.0 ROM first before either of the custom ones will work? I have it downloaded and ready to install but I'm worried that it will un-root my phone, lock my bootloader and uninstall my recovery
Currently I have
SAVA PVT SHIP S-ON RL
HBOOT-2.00.0002
Any other tips? Really want a custom android 4.0 rom
Thanks
Chris
Also, one more question, do you think it's because of my recovery that the ROM's won't boot after installing? I am using 4ext but I've tried to install clockworkmod using ROM manager but it continues to load up to 4ext, not sure if this will actually make a difference.

OP is another person who doesn't want to actually search or read before asking questions.
Read Ben's Index thread. The reason people like Ben put so much effort into creating threads like that is so that people like the OP can read and find all the information they need before asking the same questions that dozens of other lazy people have asked before.
Look at S-ON, boot.img, hBoot, LCD Panel type etc - make sure that your phone is in a condition where it is capable of running the newer ROMs.

Thanks for the link, I did do an awful lot of searching and messing around before asking, there's an awful lot of information to take in and most of it isn't relevant to me, definitely not lazy, I've done this all before without having to ask but this time I was stumped.

I gave you four key things to check (although the first two are kinda linked). If any one of those things is not correct for the ROM you are trying to install then you will fail to boot. Those things are relevant to EVERYBODY installing a ROM, even more so for any of the newer ROMs.

Are there any instructions for installing CyanogenMod 10? I had a good look through the thread but couldn't find any, I understand that there are specifics depending on which ROM but when there's no obvious instructions it's quite difficult.
Thanks
Edit: It has to be flashing the boot.img file after flashing the ROM, I seem to remember having to do that before.
Thanks for everyone's help, I knew it was something obvious I was missing.
In the index thread there is this. Step 4, been said too many times.
The reason guys like u get stuck is because u jump straight to dev section and say there is no proper instruction there.
All the proper instructions and need to know is in the general section and index. Read those first before proceeding to dev section and u will do fine.

Rain987 is right. I also think this is the reason why you need 10 posts to be allowed to post in dev section. Little bit offtopic, but okay :/
