[APP][2.1+] AdFree for Android - Android Apps and Games

This is the new AdFree for Android thread, the old thread was getting hidden because it was in a legacy devices thread.
Google removed AdFree from their app market but you can get the latest version from the adfree website
As of Android 6+ some ROMs lock the /system partition while running which makes it difficult to block ads and tracking, you can get around this limitation by making a symlink while running a custom bootrom, svbarbosa has made a flashable zip file to automate the creation of a symlink.
Please Note! If sites aren't being blocked when browsing/using the internet over mobile network, but works fine over wifi check your apn proxy settings
Change Log

0.8.20+ Fixed support for low dpi devices (< 160 dpi)
0.8.36+ Added option to wipe TCPdump log
0.8.38+ Added prompt to boot normally, or immediately switch to the TCPdump screen
0.8.40+ restart TCPdump if needed after wiping the log
0.8.42+ fixed webserver listening mistake
0.8.50+ fixed permissions on tcpdump file so the app can now read output on android 4+
0.8.52+ fixed text size on tcpdump screen for high res phones
0.8.54+ Updated app to point to new thread on xda
0.8.56+ Updated Russian translation
0.8.58+ Added option to skip boot screen prompt, tweaked UI, in-app update checks
0.8.60+ Fixed IP entry, tweaked the UI to use default device theme
0.8.62+ Fixed authentication issue
0.8.64+ Background app update check, fixed de spelling mistake and one small display mistake.
0.8.66+ Updated expiry time-out.
0.8.68+ Removed 'too old' expiry time out
0.9.0 Swapped webservers so hostnames "blocked" can be logged and shown in Adfree.
0.9.1 updated webserver config
0.9.2 the path to the web server config file wasn't right and so nothing was logging correctly
0.9.3 allows people to view duplicates in the block list, and displays time stamps, and fixes the webserver restart after wiping the log file.
0.9.4 reverses the order of the block list, and shows the latest log entries first, regardless if you show all entries or just the unique ones.
0.9.5 applied the same reverse log ordering to the tcpdump screen
0.9.6 the app can now auto upgrade itself, and menu items were added to switch between the block list and the tcpdump screens
added ACCESS_SUPERUSER permission to hide a warning in SU, which shows a device warning on Android 4.x+
0.9.7 The auto upgrade of the app will only happen if the auto update checkbox is ticked
0.9.8 updated French translation thanks to Micks29, and fixes symlink support for android 4.4 thanks to Davis.
0.9.9 Updated links to http://adfree.odiousapps.com
0.9.12 Updated tcpdump to work on current android versions. See this post if you want details on using tcpdump with adfree and how to blacklist hostnames.
0.9.13 Enabled SSL on the website and updated the app to connect over SSL using Let's Encrypt free certificate.
0.9.15 Fixed tcpdump, which was broken on recent android versions. Since most websites now enable ssl, there was little point including a web server any more.
0.9.16 Fixed self-update mechanism, as well as the manual update method so it does it itself, and not via a browser.
0.9.18 Made a landscape layout for the main screen
0.9.19 Disabled the code that added a symlink when booted, this is no longer possible when booted into Android
0.9.21 Updated app to target Android 10
0.9.23 Moved tcpdump output to external files folder instead of it's own folder on external memory.

Good job! Thank you. Works great

That's overly simplified, Adfree connects to our own server to get a list of hosts and checks if there are new hosts, rather than bombarding 3rd parties checking for updates.

The AdFree website has been updated to support the host file from here: https://code.google.com/p/smarthosts/

I have the HTC One not sure if that matters but the ads in the espn app are not blocked. What can I do to correct this? Thanks in advance.
EDIT: I was having a problem with the ads not being blocked so I uninstalled reinstalled and all amazing ad blocking seems to be working now!

I love this app but if I can do a few very minor suggestions.
1. Can you have a setting for it to boot normally every time?
2. When the app does an update check, would it be possible to have the buttons update and cancel right from the box that pops up for an update to the host file?
Again, I love this app and it is the first thing I install on a clean rom.

µTV Pro: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.androidshed.utv.pro
Also check out µInject: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466981
µTV simply works in 2 steps:
1. Add a TV show you wish to download.
2. Tap the big button to search for new episodes and send them off to µTorrent.
Note: Episodes are downloaded on your PC at home not on the android device itself.
**IMPORTANT** DO NOT BUY µTV Pro if you're poor... like me. The only difference is µTV Pro has no advertisements.
IMPORTANT USAGE NOTES:
- You can get µTorrent from http://www.utorrent.com
- In order for the app to function, you have to enable "Web UI" in µTorrent.
- Go to settings (on this app) to enter your µTorrent IP, PORT, Username and Password.
- The "Refresh" button searches for new episodes and the "Download All" sends them all to µTorrent.
- uTV can only find episodes that actually have verified torrents. It might not find non-popular TV Shows, old episodes or TV Shows that aren't recorded by seasons and episodes.
Changes
Code:
Update 0.8
- Major interface overhaul
- New interface works on Android 2.1+ only, I will release an alternative version for Android devices below 2.1
- Bugs squished!
Update 0.7
- Saving your settings will now verify them before proceeding.
Update 0.6.9
- Replaced the 2 buttons with one big one!
- you can now edit a TV show's season and episode.
Update 0.6.5
- Get latest episode option added (no need to specify season/episode if you don't want to any more)
- Small bug fixes
Update 0.6.3
- added token authorization support. no need to change µTorrent advanced settings anymore.
Update 0.6.2
- Yo can use ASCII text characters in the "Address" EditText box.
This app is just a tool that can be used for good or evil so please try to use the app legally.

It's possible with some limitations:
- no preloading / preopening (Quick opener mode) of webpages
- a click on Evernote, Google Docs and etc. will bring you to the latest document or screen of this app and maybe not to the document you actually pinned
- a few apps may reinitialize and lose text in input fields, scroll progress and etc. after switching to them
I'll implement a non-root mode if there're enough interested people that are okay with this limitations.
btw:
PinTasking is live on the Play Store:
wow, you added even more options!

Okay, I'll implement a non-root mode before or after the full release. May I ask you why folks with a rooted phone (?!) want it? I wonder if it's for security reasons? You can install the system helper by yourself with a root file explorer. Even system apps need a confirmation to gain root and the helper app declares only two additional permissions and shares them with PinTasking.
I am rooted but their are plenty of people who arent.
My phone is rooted, running plenty of rooted apps, and it says I am not and asks to install the helper or uninstall. Do I have to install the helper? I am on Android 5.1.1 HTC One M8.

This could help you:
1. Make sure that you haven't accidentally denied the root pop-up.
2. Restart the app and try it again.
3. It takes a while on Cyanogenmod to show up the root dialog. Tap "verify root" and wait 2-8 seconds.
I experienced the same bug once but I couldn't reproduce it and a simple application restart solved it for me. I'll look into it again.
Anyway, thanks for reporting.

hi ,
Your app PinTasking looks very interesting and practical .Thanks !
One issue i am trying to understand ................
I have Note 4 ( N910F ) rooted and on Lollipop 5.0.1
i installed your app from Play store, granted root access etc .
But i found app a bit confusing at first ( functions ..how to use etc ).
i uninstalled app ,as i wanted to see your video and then decide.
After watching video ,i was happy i understood functions better and reinstalled from Play store .
This time app was installed ,without asking again for root ( as in 1 st time when i installed )
It is working fine ,tested it rebooted etc ,but PinTasking does not show up in Superuser..?
However ,whilst typing above ,i had idea and went to PinTasking /Root helper installer and reinstalled
helper then was ask for root access etc ,( even though it was never uninstalled ,as i could see it in Titanuim )
and activated it ,and now app shows up in Superuser .
I have solved my issue ,but want to bring it to your attention.
Very impressed so far with apps.........practical /functional uses !
good luck

NetGuard can prevent applications from using the internet (=firewall).
You can allow/deny internet access for each application, even system applications.

There's no "best" - this is subjective.
You have a list of apps, and you can choose whether or not to allow an app access to the Internet over WiFi or Mobile data.
Whether or not you want to let an app access the Internet is up to you.
I have just released alpha version 0.2 with quite some things improved.

I have just released beta version 0.3

Not on a granular, per-app basis, at least right now.
NetGuard for Android works by creating a VPN service at system level. Based on your choices in the allow/deny screen, NetGuard will set up VPN rules for which apps are forced through the "VPN". The "VPN" isn't a real VPN; rather, it just sinkholes the traffic to nowhere.
The limitation here is that when creating these rules, we can only set which applications' traffic enters the VPN. We can't granularly control which requests or hosts they can talk to, on a per-app basis. It would be possible to set "for all apps" a whitelist/blacklist of IP addresses, but this would be quite different, and would likely be less useful as a firewall, and more useful as simply an "ad blocker".
The VPN interface doesn't tell us which app is trying to access the internet though - we need to set it up before-hand. There are ways to tell, but Google (or a careful OEM) could easily block those with SELinux policy updates, and the goal here is to try to get all the functionality we need without any kind of root access.
Nice app for non rooted users.
I've just created an issue on Github though.
French translation done.
I'll try to create an icon this weekend if I have free time. Let me know if you want a specific color,... etc.

I've just created an issue on Github though.
French translation done.
I'll try to create an icon this weekend if I have free time. Let me know if you want a specific color,... etc.

The problem you have reported is probably caused by a broken VPN implementation in your ROM. I will look into it later this week more detailed.
I like to keep the current colors, realizing not everybody will like them, but I know from experience I can't make everybody happy anyway.
Thanks for your translation!
@Primokorn can you please try if you have the same problem with one of the no root firewalls from the Play store?

You mean AdAway's source ?
You mean AdAway App ?
or anything else ?
A flashable zip that can come in handy.
How is it different (& better) from adblock & adaway?

I'm not saying it's better
Differences ? Not much. AdAway is doing the same thing too. But AdAway don't have all the sources. I extend the sources as much as I can. I will add as I find and keep my mode extended - updated. You can paste these sources to the AdAway. Make this from there. But it will add commentary # entries and watermarks too...
Adblock ? AFAIK it's a plugin which ads from web sites. Hosts is system-staff. It will clean both web browsing and applications.
--------------- OP UPDATED WITH FLASHABLE ZIPS ---------------
Will check it out. Thanks for making it a flashable .zip
Feedback: Can't access Facebook and Instagram via browser. Twitter works, but pictures/media doesn't show.
It certainly does the job, but perhaps a bit too aggressive when blocking social media

I haven't seen an add blocker that can block YouTube ads since Xposed. Can this really block YouTube ads??
Also...can this work in conjunction with adaway?
Edit:. Didn't block any YouTube app ads for me....

Alot of links got blocked when using the internet, which hindered the use of internet surfing and ads in apps like youtube were still there so I had to uninstall to get internet functionality back.
The only patched youtube app I ever knew of was the xposed youtube app but exposed doesnt exist for nougat...only marshmallow.
-------OP UPDATED--------
- Made a new build -----> social media entries removed. For people who face problems with Facebook, Twitter, Instagram
- New sources added, all sources merged
- Seems like hosts can't block YouTube ads. Nothing to do with this, sorry.
Thanks for the update
So flashed this and it didn't so the in app ads as at all

Well, now, at least internet works while it's on, but i can't see it's effectiveness - websites are full of ads.
What filters are you using? At what countries it's targeted on? Too lazy to check&compare internal filter within /data/data

Just sent you message through app. It's quite dissapointing, that logs will be sent to you without user knowing about it - there's no such info, that logs will be sent automatically.

We collect an errors that may occur in the app. We do not use Firebase Crashlytics to restrict access to user data. Please read the terms of the Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy specifies what data we collect, see link: https://adprotect.app/agreements/en/privacy.html

i found a similar problem as yours, see here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/mlituo
An user complains that vpn app doesn't work after rooting and installing Magisk app.
I think that some system apps (such as if the one responsible for VPNs) can be removed after rooting and the magisk app installation.
