Asus Fonepad Discussion - General Topics

I searched but didn't find any general discussion threads. Pardon me if you find one.
Personally, I have been waiting my Fonepad this since it was announced in February, ever since I got my Note II last year I have wanted something bigger lol. I never geek out over phones the way I have been jacked up over this device. I bought it after pocket-testing a Nexus 7, I always carry my phone in my back pocket, and its a snug fit. I am 5' 7" 145lbs so I can sit on my phone you fat-asses. In order of importance, making
calls is fourth or fifth on my list of things my phone must do, so I think having a jumbo phone wont bother me (too much). I am headed out of town for the weekend and will post more if I think its relevant.
I GOT AT LEAST $50 TOWARDS THE COST OF A DEVICE FOR A DEVELOPER.
Pic is Fonepad v Note II v GS3. I would put an iphone if I had one lol.

Well i too ha e just bought the fonepad, such a great device for the price. I bought it for RM699. About $230 i think.
There's lots of 7" tablet with phone capability here in asia, so its not weird at all taking call from it. I guess. I mean even cute girls does it.

Also got mine weeks ago. Good build and battery life.
but some cons:
1. not an outdoor type tablet especially under direct sun, brightness not enough.
2. asus bundled keyboard are a joke, switch to android keyboard.
3. no root (yet) and seems a bit challenging to hack since its x86 cpu.
other than that its a great everyday phablet. Asians value practical than style. But using big phone can be hip too if more people doing it. :good:

its just great

its the best device ever....

I also just got my Fonepad, its only been a couple days and I love it, most of the bloatware can be disabled and so far it does everything I could want, and then some. A root would just be the cherry on top. Im also willing to buy future devs for this phablet some dinners as well.

I'm surprised it's not much more expensive than the Nexus 7 with mobile data, which some have used for phone calls:
androidpolice.com/2013/01/05/an-experiment-my-life-with-a-nexus-7-as-my-phone/

I've had my fonepad for about a fortnight now and I'm still loving it. It replaced my viewsonic viewpad 7 FroYo phone/tablet which was starting to show its age.
I use my fonepad as my primary phone via Bluetooth and despite a few niggles I'm very pleased with it. Most of my issues may be caused by my launcher (Apex) and are as follows:
1) minor crackling noises when browsing etcetera, whilst in a call (using Bluetooth)
2) The unlock screen shows upside-down (ie right to left rather than left to right when I turn on my screen) for a second or so - I should point out that I'm in permanent landscape mode.
3) The lack of root! (Mainly for clockwork mod, titanium, tasker, cryptonite)
4) Lack of rear camera (yeah, I'm using a UK model)
5) Lack of a case! Fortunately there's one due for release on the 30th.
Those niggles aside, my advice to anyone considering this tablet/phone (I refuse to use the word "Phablet") is to grab it quick, at the price it's unbeatable!

Hi Guys,
I got my fonepad 5 days ago and pretty happy with it.
I push 8 gb sd card into device and in the beginning all working ok. Then I (maybe) change something in settings that Asus don't recognize SD Card anymore. I can just hear music from SD card but files for UCCW or wallpapers could not be read.
I tried about all but cannot see any progress. Do someone know how to get it work again?
Thank you

speaker volume?
How is the loudspeaker volume? A couple of reviews said that it was satisfactory for voice calls and another said that it was rather muted, especially when playing music.

What case is coming out on the 30th? Do you have a link to the info.
I have had mine nearly 2 weeks and I like it much more than my old galaxy note, though the screen is really a smudge magnet.

Regretfully I was to quick. Flashplayer still doesn't work.
Don't know why Asus make it not workable for all.

Here is a Petition for Asus to unlock the bootloader for our device like they did with some other android tablets they made.

HTC Media Link...?

So this popped up in my pulse news feed a few minutes ago when I was cramming in tech stuff over breakfast.
Any thoughts on compatibility?
Says it's for the HTC one series - think we could get it to work with the doubleshot?
It'll be a few more weeks before I can sit down and start getting into dev hardcore again, but I'm trying to keep up as I can and this caught my attention.
Anyone got any info out there?

Wow that's cool but its 90
On another note, hey blue

Well, $90 for a novelty ain't bad.
Most likely soon we'll find them in an OEM/aftermarket version, or just plain stolen from factory and sold by workers for half price on ebay.
Thanks Blue6IX for the post!
(will "thank you" properly tomorrow - "Sorry, you are limited to 8 thanks per day" )

This has been available for a while now. No reason it shouldn't work with our phone, as we have dlna software installed (assuming you're using the stock ROM). I use my phone to stream to my sony NMP-N200 all the time... and it almost usually works.
?
I have a rom that has middle option configurations hd link, I only need the device hehehehe if anyone would like me to discuss tested.
the rom is:

DLNA is awesome. I used it on my EVO Shift when I ported it into my ROM. At first I was like sweet I can use wireless to view my sdcard, then it scared the heck out of me (I'm paranoid) so I stopped using it.

Too bad the xfinity play app doesn't work with my infinity lol
Mine was delivered today at my house. Its sitting there waiting for me to get home.....
I ordered it today. It's going to be my first tablet so I'm looking forward to test it!
Got it yesterday. Yay $4 overnight prime shipping. Had it rooted within a few hours and set up the way I enjoyed my Tab 10.1. Little frustrated that my 64gb card is no good in it yet but I'll hold out hope for a patch to repair that problem. In the meantime I can use that in my phone and let the tablet have the 32gb sdhc card.

LMAO! I've been rolling with that on another message board for a month now. You're the first to observe that :silly:
Just got mine from newegg today.......broken! Worst part is the shipping box was undamaged, only the retail packaging was dented. So newegg knowingly shipped out a broken POS. Sorry need to vent some. Now won't ship out until tomorrow and will receive on Monday! Monday, I can't wait that long. Already been waiting forever.
And I had to fight to get a replacement before I returned the broken one. I used to sing neweggs praises up until this point, not anymore.....

Mine came in from Amazon this morning. First impressions:
- WOOT!
- Well built, no screen flexing.
- ZOMG fingerprints!
- Screen looks amazing.
- Swype like keyboard; I like it.
Only issue I've had so far is when trying to copy a large file from my work PC. It would start the transfer and just hang.

I used the method on this page with some effort:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1706588
1 - I didn't use the drivers there cause I just couldn't get windows to recognize them. Instead I installed the Asus Sync off their page and that put the drivers on. (you can get that here under "utilities".
However, if you use that approach the adb.exe it uses causes problems. Some people say if you end Asus Sync in task manager that'll work. I just replaced the adb.exe in the Asus Sync install folder with the one included in the rooting package above.
2 - Some people have had problems (including me) where the .bat script kept going even though the tablet wasn't done rebooting. To fix this, edit the .bat script anywhere it says "@adb wait-for-device" after the line "ECHO Step 1 - Pushing files..." and add a line under it that just says "pause". This'll make it wait for you to tell it to go ahead and you can make sure the device is fully rebooted each time before it tries to continue.
After those headaches I was free and clear. Hope that helps, I'm only fair to middling at this stuff myself.
Mine was delivered from bestbuy today.
Just getting setup so far pretty impressed
Got my Infinity yesterday and sold my prime today. The infinity screen is really nice. I compared it with my Prime and the difference in text was readily apparent. I read a couple of comics on it and they appeared sharper than they had on the prime also. The infinity also loaded websites about 3 or 4 seconds faster than my prime did. I tested this on several websites and it was consistently faster. The build quality on mine was fine also.
I happened to go by Sams Club today and got to check out a google nexus 7 also. It was really nice but I really prefer the 10 inch size since a big part of my tablet use is reading comics. Can't wait til jelly bean arrives for the Infinity. Mine is pretty smooth already but the nexus 7 was "buttery" smooth.
Got mine today from Newegg and love it. I had a Prime back in February, but had to return it after a few weeks. Too many issues with that, but the Infinity is an absolute blast to use. Screen is awesome

I also used this rooting method with success.
I did not have the same experience as above however. First, I downloaded the ASUS Sync install, installed the pre-requisites (which include the Android USB Drivers), then cancelled the installation of the Sync app. Then I just ran the .bat file in the 1.9 root release.

Un-rooted TF700T on JB

I've been seeing a lot of complaints about sluggishness and lag on the Infinity. Am I the only one who satisfied with this tablet? I get a tiny bit of lag here and there, but not to the extent in which others have complained. My device is definitely not perfect but I love it. Sure, it has a little light bleed. Yes, the screen makes an almost inaudible clicking noise when touched in certain areas.
As far as software goes, I'm really not having any major issues. Everything runs smoothly, even with multiple background processes. I suppose the only issue I have with the software is how wallpapers are cropped. I disabled a lot of the bloatware and don't have my applications to upon boot. I don't really see the need for apps to run on startup.
I did end up having to fashion my own protective strip for the dock, though. I ruined the velvet strip on the front of the inside of where the tablet connects into the dock because I used a screen protector at first. It ended up pushing the strip and its glue downward.

No you ain''t the only one...
I figure why say anything if I don't have much to complain about.
* said this eons ago (which is days in forum time) "!f I keep looking and stop using this tablet !'ll always be mad at it"
I was thinking the other day, I might have to divorce myself from the general section of this forum. There is so much negativity around here, it almost makes me second guess myself. The minority of people with issues are very vocal and it's quite a downer. If somebody is unhappy with their purchase, they should just get something else.
I, too, have a lightning fast device. It was fast before I rooted it, and after I rooted and froze bloatware I'd say it might be faster than the ipad, though I've never played with one. Sure there is a bit of lag sometimes, but I attribute that to apps still not being developed for fhd screens, and will only get faster with time.

Same here. My TF700 is also stock running JB.
Hell, it is almost a laptop with the dock.
I am very happy.
All we need now is some more decent apps to make this the best piece of portable hardware around.
I'm a little disappointed that Amazon's app isn't compatible. Other than Amazon, I don't really see many app conflicts. When I first got my Infinity, Draw Something and Words with Friends didn't work but that changed rather quickly. Draw Something is awesome on the Infinity.
File transfers seem to be decent on the Infinity too. Whether its tranfering PC to Infinity, Infinity to PC or just moving files around on the device itself, I have never had issues.
I think people need to understand that tablets are still very young, comparably.

I laugh every time I read posts like these. So you telling me its OK that you paid 544$ plus 149.99$ for the dock n still have the build quality that you have?.. damn I love android but I am not a fool. For this kind of money I am expecting to get the best of android because there is no other android device that has a fhd display and costs this much. I know were you coming, I felt the same way in the first month of me owning it. But now I am trying really hard to love my infinity and not unlock my tablet nor trade it in for another company or device.

Build quality and the OS are two different things. ASUS is not Android. I do agree that they need to step up QC but its hardly worth losing sleep over. You'll end up spending more time worrying about how it looks, rather than just taking a deep breath and enjoying it.
Also, there build quality of the dock is excellent. The protective strip came off on my own error.

Agreed, I had a prime when it ran Honeycomb; when the ICS update came out there were endless complaint threads.
Look at it this way: Users who are happy with their device don't post many "positive" threads so all we see are the negative threads of a minority of users looking for support. (Ya I've got small quirks with this device occasionally, but I still absolutely love this thing
As for incompatible apps Titanium Backup works great for exporting said apps from my phone to tablet (of course, root is needed)

Favi Smart Stick

I have tried using this stick for a couple days and I think it has some potential, but the interface is horrid. I'd like to start a discussion about how to modify, root, or at least find some apps that can help make this a better media option.
Anybody else got one yet or that can point me in the right direction?
It comes preloaded with 4.0.1, plex and the ability to sideload apps, so it should be pretty straight forward

I just ordered one of these with the keyboard. I should be here on Monday. I am curious to see how this thing works out. I just want to use it for Netflix and HBOgo. Everything else will be a bonus. I will write a small review after I get my hands on it.
I saw this last night. It looks interesting but one of the few reviews on YouTube was horrendous. Nothing worked right. But then again the guy doing the review could be an idiot. I'm kind of thinking the latter is true.

I like the concept of multi-account. I am not sure the 4GB version I ordered could handle too much data (I believe there are duplicates of apps when using muti-account in 4.2, is that true?). Regardless, I think the 8GB version would be better setup to handle that.
In the last week, I haven't used the stick at all. that is partly due to being busy, but also having a bad taste in my mouth from my initial use of the stick (lack of usability) and being really frustrated with force closes, poor responsiveness and having to switch out HDMI cables to use it because I have too many devices connected and not enough HDMI inputs on my TV...but I digress.
I see that the XBMC Frodo Release Candidate 1 has been released http://xbmc.org/download/
my plan is to drop that on the smart stick this weekend (via the USB thumbdrive, I assume) and see how well it can handle it. My hope is I will get 1080 output, the new audio engine, PVR support and other nice goodies in the latest XBMC development and when it is stable and working well, to be able to grab my current XBMC user options folder and drop it into the stick.
Then I will have all my favorites, subscriptions, local network music/tv/movie folders, etc easily ported form my ATV2 iOS XBMC to the smart stick android XBMC....
I will report back and would like to hear if others have tried something similar.
I will follow this thread. Very interesting thoughts.
Do you know if you can control it with your phone/tablet?
Would be awesome to make my Nexus 7 into remote!

you can control the stick using the Google TV remote app
Cool, thanks.
Do you have any idea if you can get a Google TV remote .apk somewhere? It's not available in my Danish Play store.
EDIT: Or maybe this one is viable? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.entertailion.android.remote
Able Remote..

The reviews I have seen haven't been the best. I love the idea of this, but maybe its a little under powered. There are other ones out there that have dual core processors. According to Amazon, mine will be here on Monday. If its not up to the task, I might try one of the other ones which have dual core processors.
Ok, so it came early, and I was able to get it hooked up. I have been playing with it for awhile, and my initial impressions are not good. I don't know if it is lack of oomph with the processor, or terrible software, but this thing is barely usable for my needs.
I did download the googletv remote app. It works pretty well. Occasionally, it loses connection, but overall it works fine.
Initial setup is pretty painless. After getting everything up and running, I downloaded netflix and hbogo. Neither work very well. Netflix takes a long time to load and there is terrible lag. After a few minutes, it seems to get better. Because the app is made for tablet/phone, it doesnt work nearly as well with a tv, because of the lack of a touch screen to scroll with. It becomes an exercise in patients to get what you want on this app. The search feature works just fine, but for general browsing, it really isnt very good.
HBOGo is much worse. With big series such as the sopranos, it overwhelms the unit and things almost completely freeze up. There was no way to select any episode because of all the lag. I did a movie to load, but the resolution was subpar and the video is choppy. I have full bars and the Favi is right next to my router. HBOGo works flawlessly on my phone or tablet, but on the TV, it is really bad.
I love the idea of this thing, but i don't see me holding onto this unit very long. It really is a slow pile of junk at this point.
Unfortunately your experience sounds exactly like mine. I am wondering, hoping that the XBMC implementation may do a better job as it may utilize few resources

Upon reading more about the one from laptopmag.com, it comes rooted out of the box. and apparently although it cant reach 1080p resolution natively, some have been able to do so with custom roms, and being only 5 bucks cheaper makes it alot better. Thanks for those links!

720p is good enough.
I am looking at the last link I posted. The MK802 III. It has a 1.6ghz processor where the first link is only 1ghz.
Edit: Just saw the mk802 II on amazon for $37
I should have looked at reviews before I bought this thing, what a pile of crap... It's really terrible, so damned slow. I don't remember even my OG Droid being that slow at 1ghz, and it only had 256mb ram... I'd love to see it rooted with overclocking and CM10.1...
Ok, I've been playing around with this thing. I disabled all apps and processes which aren't necessary.
Stock Browser is terrible. I downloaded Opera and Chrome and they work better, but not great.
Youtube app works really good. No lag, high quality video and sound.
HBOGo is terrible on this thing.
Netflix takes a little time before it works, but it seems to be pretty good. After the videos load (which take too long), it has worked pretty flawlessly.
I uninstalled googletv app once my wireless keyboard came in. The googletv app worked ok, but was buggy. the wireless keyboard works much better.
Its still a little disappointing and a little unstable, but with some tweaks, it might be OK in the future. They have released a rooted access build. The bootloader is locked, so this will limit development. Because this thing was so cheap, I might hold onto it. I have been debating keeping it and hoping it gets better, or sending it back and buying MK802III. I have until the end of January to send back, so I will continue to play with it for now.

Well I just picked up the mk802 iii from Amazon for $69. The 1.6ghz proc. and 8 gig of storage. I should have it tomorrow. I will let you guys know. I could have gotten it cheaper but I didn't want to wait for it to ship from China.

[Q] Same root method for Memo Pad Smart 10?

Better thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2153331
I know this is in the wrong section, but I couldn't find a section for the Memo Pad Smart 10 so I'm asking here as the TF300 seems to have almost identical specs.
First off, I only needed a light duty tablet, I have a GNoteII for my phone so I'm not in need of an expensive powerhouse of a tablet as I only wanted a larger screen for some traveling stuff and what not.
But I would like to be able to root and unlock the bootloader on my new tablet once I get it. But I wasn't sure if there was such a thing already in the works, where I could look for it if it is, or if I could somehow help out by providing data from the device when it arrives at my house tomorrow.
If any Dev's out there wanted info from me I'd be happy to help out as much as I can. I'm by no means capable of doing it myself, but I know how ADB works and such so I would be willing to help.
TIA.

Haven't found any solution for it yet, if I knew how the process worked I would try to make it happen. But I'm totally out of my element in getting that done.

Hey guys, I'm still searching for the original OTG adapter, does anyone mind ti sell his, to me?
how to root the asus memo pad me301t
Hey I was on Toshiba forums and they have a root method. By using motocrunch not the bootloader aspect just the root you can gain root that way. The original link to the convo is http://www.transformerforums.com/fo...est-rooting-guide-me301t-android-4-1-1-a.html

Oh and mine says there was another system update available yesterday but I'm reluctant to install it.I already got the 4.2.1 update does anyone know if the new update will remove root.

It probably will. Others have had luck restoring root using voodoo ota root keeper. I didn't.
But motochopper rooted me again after the 4.2.1 update.
I'll check for updates when I get home and let you know.

is anyone having any audio playback issues with their memo pad?
when streaming HD video from iPlayer or youtube etc, the audio is out of sync for me, which is really annoying!
Another thread has all the up to date in to on root and bootloader unlock for this device.
I'm going to close this one and link to the other here and in the OP.
