Recovery Issue - Samsung Infuse 4G

So I'm having this issue with recovery. I recently got this Infuse and it was running cm9 but used the ODIN UCLB3 return to stock method cause cm9 was giving me issues and I always preferred running stock. Anyways, stock is painfully slow and laggy, so I wanna run jb 4.2.2. Now, here's my issue: I decided to try this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1776129 and followed the instructions but whenever I reboot to recovery, instead of the recovery menu appearing, what does show up is a mess of colored lines that look as if the lcd screen was cracked and nothing really happens no matter what button I press... I then wanted to try another recovery, so I used the ODIN method to install Entropy512's Daily Driver kernel with Red CWM Recovery and doing so made the recovery menu show up correctly!! I then followed the steps in the rom thread and it said to flash cm9 and gapps, reboot and when it got stuck in the splash to use power + vol up+down method to get back to recovery. well, whenever i do this, it does go back to recovery but, once again, instead of the recovery menu showing up, it shows all the messed up colored lines... i then have to use the odin return to stock once more and go back to stock :/ Im not at all experienced with samsung devices as all my previous ones were htc's, so any guidence and help would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advanced!

Sounds like you need to flash the GB bootloaders. Use qksters Heimdall found in my signature.

thanks for ur reply! i downloaded the heimdall back to stock but the heimdall dd kernel + red cwm links didnt work.... though, i believe its the same as the odin dd kernel + red cwm? would it be safe to use the odin version instead?
EDIT: well, im having another issue now... when using heimdall to flash the uclb3, it says i need to install the drivers... on the thread i ur sig it says to set them up and using heimdall method it prompts (right after the failed flash) to download the drivers, and, in order to do so, i would have to select "Samsung USB Composite" on the window that openned later, but that specific driver never shows up for install on the list... any help?

Drivers should be in the package. Don't recall exactly but I think the file is labelled zadig. I don't use Odin but if you can flash bootloaders from it you should be okay.

Thank you both!! I followed ur instructions and managed to install the drivers and return to stock using heimdall method!! Next, attempt to flash cm9 and hope it all goes as it should

If you get rainbow effect again, you will need to flash bootloaders.

ok, so now i have another issue. i went to flash the red cwm but the links on the thread appear to be outdated and so i couldnt download the heimdall install mehthod for the entropy dd kernel + red cwm. also, the phone is (for some reason) not recognized by odin (probably cause i have no root??). the heimdall return to stock wasnt rooted, so now i have to root. i tried the superoneclick from one of the threads on here but it froze and wouldnt work, so i downloaded the superoneclick on the android developing and hacks forum and it gets stuck on shell rooting device... - Step #7. sooo, what can i do here?? thanks for the help so far, btw!
EDIT: ok never mind, i flashed infuzen a16 kernel and got the red cwm... so i went ahead and restored a backup i had made before i attempted all of this and now im back rooted now, im off to try and flash cm9!!!

definitely, and especially since this is all so new to me coming from htc... and, to add even more reasons to the convenience of reading all about the infuse, i think this is gonna be my daily device for quite some time... so i better read up on all i can!!

Also remember that the file format changes to MDT and any screw ups will probably require a return to stock using Heimdall or Odin. Read the OP instructions very carefully.
This is a guide guide to use too.

[SOLVED] Soft Brick - Flash to stock ROM with Odin?

Yesterday I was unable to turn on my phone. It loads the normal bootscreen, then the T-Mobile startup animation plays. It gets stuck at the huge S on the screen. A lot of people suggest flashing through Odin, but I'm not familiar with doing that. I saw the "[Solution Thread] Step by Step on how to flash any Gingerbread ROM.", but my device is froyo, and I just want to stay with stock ROM. I imagine I just follow the steps, except substitute stock with step 3. Where can I download the stock ROM though?
Thanks. I probably missed a thread explaining exactly what I'm asking, but if anyone could deal with a noob like me who knows nothing, that'd be greatly appreciated.
UPDATE: I did some goggling and found this. It looks pretty reliable, but can someone approve it for me? I'd rather not screw up my device:

I did that, and I did it successfully, but it didn't fix my problem. I described the status of my phone on the original post, can you look at it and try and tell if it's bricked or what do I need to do?
I'm not exactly sure of what you've done so far (not in the mood to run through all the links) our how it qualifies as "successful" considering the issue remains. Anyway this is what you can do for a fresh start:
1) download the following to your computer:
a) "odin"
b) "kc1 stock + root"
c) "super one click"
d) "kies mini"
2) Open Odin on your computer
3) Load up Odin and ALL of the KC1 files(note, Odin will repartition)
4) Flash and let the phone reboot.
5) Load super one click and UNroot
6) Load kies mini and let it update your phone kd1
Hope this helps!

either way, i wouldnt recommend using TB as your main source of backup. it works, but you will eventually have glitches in random apps.

Yeah, unfortunately.
ok. can you try getting into recovery mode? if not, then you should be able to get into download mode. make sure odin is up and running prior to you plugging the phone into the computer.
After finishing with Odin, it boots into recovery mode anyway. I can still get into download mode also, and yes I made sure it was up and running.
wait. what are you flashing in odin? please odin to raver's kc1.

you should not boot back into cwm recovery. once it goes to samsung recovery, just select reboot normally and let the rom load.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Are you just trying to get it into recovery? If so, do you have the Android software developer kit (SDK) installed? The SDK includes the adb binary. Download it, install it, then open a command prompt, cd to the 'platform-tools' directory where the SDK installed, insure your phone is on & plugged in via USB, and issues the command: adb reboot recovery.
If I'm off-base with what you're trying to accomplish, my apologies.

Don't use a KFx rom, the KF1 and KF2 versions of Gingerbread were really buggy and will give you more trouble than they're worth. You're better off flashing Octane, Valhalla or ICBINB which get updated frequently.

Which also means that you need to flash a KG4 leak or newer for the proper GB bootloaders. If not, you'll get a rainbow screen.
Similar Problem
Hey Guys,
I had a similar problem. I am using Fire Expert to overwrite the new recovery to the \system\bin folder. However, I realized my mistake was that I did not mount as r/w. After I did that though and I held the volume up, down and power, I stay stuck at the initial splash screen and can't go into the stock recovery screen. I can't boot regularly either; I have to Odin recover. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

Overwriting the old recovery and putting the update.zip file on the sdcard for CWM Final was for Froyo ROMs only, not Gingerbread (GB) ones. What ROM are you currently on?
In order to get into recovery since flashing the GB boot loaders I have to:
Power off the phone
Hold down Volume Up, Volume Down, and the Power button
When the Galaxy S screen comes on, wait a second, it'll get a tad bit brighter. When that happens let go of only the Power button
Wait a few seconds and you should be in recovery
Sounds like you might be a bit goofed at this point, though. If you were on GB before I'd suggest using one of the ROMs in bhundven's The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection. The last one in the list will also give you root, CWM, and voodoo lagfix.

Weird. All you should have to do is put the updated recovery in /system/bin & put the update.zip on the root of the sdcard.

I've not used it but if it allows you to mount /system read/write, then it should work fine as long as you're putting the 'recovery' file in /system/bin & the update.zip on the root of the sdcard.

Im new to this phone. I have it unlocked to run on att. It's running stock 2.3.6. My question is how do I go about rooting it and adding a recovery. And since it's unlocked, does that effect anything? Thank you.
Check out the development section and look for antonx kernel..that will give you cwm recovery and aa lot of neat feature .
Though you might need to flash it with heimdall or use superoneclick to root then flash with sgs kernel flasher

There is also the blastoff kernel. eollie has made a oneclick for it in my signature under oneclicks on the second post of that thread.
The recovery is rooted, but the stock rom is not. So you can install a rooted rom after the heimdall flash.
If you are on froyo, don't forget to flash the oneclick a second time to flash bootloaders.
I rooted with zergrush then just used sgs kernel flasher to flash antonx kernel. Very simple.

if the instructions to root & flash rom seem too complicated, perhaps it is best that you don't try it on your own. There are services, example mobiletechvideos, that will do it for a fee.
as far as the cable goes, any samsung micro usb phone cable, should do both charging and data fine.
fyi, you probably want to post future questions to the Captivate Q&A forum.

I didn't flash my phone for years because I was too worried about losing data and dealing with all the random garbage of flashing, random errors, bootloops etc. that happen without warning, but trust me, when I did it, it wasn't as bad as I thought. Initially, I had errors and had to reflash to stock by download some other software, so crap happens but I'm decent at flashing now and I only started 2 weeks ago.
I had some trouble and had a thread on this forum and people were helping me and I was helping myself. Have to learn how to do this and then it becomes easy.
But I feel terrible about it because I've hated this phone since the day I got it but with the CM10 fixes it runs so amazingly that I should just keep it, but I still hate it so much I want an S3. Its amazing with the right ROM. I just wish I had flashed it way earlier so that I could enjoy using it instead of hating it for crashing all the time and being laggy.
EDIT: I'll post the guide in another thread
^
There is absolutely no need to get Root before trying to flash a custom rom.
You must, however, use Odin or Heimdall to flash a kernel that has the CWM Recovery. When you have done this, you simply need to reboot into said cwm recovery and flash the rom of your choice.
Please read the Stickied Threads in the General and Q & A Forums. This will help you a lot.

1. On your computer, search for "Odin3 1.85" on Google. The first link should be an XDA link which will directly download Odin3. Unzip it and execute the Odin .exe file.
2. Now search "how to install cm7 captivate wiki", click the second link and scroll down to see "WARNING: INSTALLING A CUSTOM RECOVERY IMAGE ON THE SAMSUNG CAPTIVATE WILL VOID THE WARRANTY." Below that you can download mtcarey's Kernel with ClockworkMod Recovery 5.
3. Put your Captivate in Download mode. To do this, turn it off, hold both volume up and down buttons and plug the phone to your computer. You will probably need Samsung Galaxy S drivers to make the computer to recognize the phone. (I'm not sure about the link, I'll try to get it later)
4. In Odin, make sure the phone is added in the Message box. Click PDA and choose the CWM kernel .tar file you just downloaded. Make sure that ONLY "Auto Reboot" and "F. Reset Time" are checked and then click start. Your phone will reboot shortly!
5. You now have a custom recovery in your phone, which will allow you to install any custom ROM. Unplug your phone, remove the battery and put it back on. Hold both volume buttons and the power button to make your phone to boot into Recovery mode. Plug the phone back and in the recovery, navigate to Mounts and Storage with volume buttons. Press Power to select. Now press Mount USB Storage to mount the phone to your computer.
6. Go to get.cm website and find "captivatemtd" in the left section. There you can download the latest CM10 nightly and put it into your phone! Be patient for the download. On your computer, eject your phone, unmount it in recovery and you can unplug it. Navigate to Install zip from SD card, choose zip and find the ROM you downloaded. Wait for it to finish and that's it, enjoy Android Jelly Bean!
Note that your recovery is now ClockworkMod Recovery 6. You can keep this recovery or install another kernel if you want. Search for "captivate android development" on Google, open the XDA link and find a thread that begins with [Kernel][JellyBean] like Devil and Semaphore kernels.
Why stop at ICS? You can go with one of the JB ROM's recently released, I started my flashing experiences with ICS, settled on the SlimICS version and have been upgrading with every new release they've posted

After installing CM9 or 10 The phone uses the kernel of the Rom installed?
Iv read a lot of guides
Yours and one of the member korockinout13 was the simplest ones
Yours use odin and the other heimdall
All the guides are the same and in the finish all have same result?
I hope I helped you and you didn't have any issues!
I suppose they have the same result. The kernel installed in a CyanogenMod ROM comes with the original CWM recovery but I don't think this is a stock ICS/JB kernel.
You can use Heimdall or Odin, maybe the features are different but I'm used to Odin.

I havent tried yet
In the moment i install the kernel in PDA on Odin this makes possible the recovery mode when the phone is powered on with volume buttons?
yes, by flashing a CWM rom, you will be able to backup and restore your current rom as well as flash new roms, by using the three button startup.
if you do the three button startup with your existing non-CWM rom, you will get a simple stock recovery menu but it won't let you do much. hope this helps.

I'm not sure you're right. If your flash the kernel I described (Corn kernel I think), you will then be able to boot into CWM recovery and make a backup. If you want to only backup your apps or SMS, use Titanium Backup. You will need to have root permissions to do this. Go on androidsu dot com slash superuser and download Superuser 3.2 RC3 for ARM devices. You will have to flash it in recovery mode.
I must use speedmod kernel before installing cm9 or cm10?

No, unless this is the kernel I told you to download in step 2 (mtcarey's kernel). Flash this one and you will be able to flash CyanogenMod. The phone will probably reboot the recovery when you will start flashing. If the installation doesn't resume automatically, just reflash the zip and you're done.
I got it
Cyanogen mod only "wants" the "mtcarey's Kernel" ?

Can't get into CWM Recovery

Hey guys, relatively fresh nooblet here. Been following the forums since I got my phone last year. But just signed up now on xda now that I plan to root.
So I've posted before, just yesterday actually, and I got my phone rooted and whatnot.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1952613
Now that I'm trying to get into CWM using ROM Manager app, when I am at the recovery screen and I choose the option to reinstall packages, I get a n error sign when it tries to install from sdcard.
-- Install from sdcard...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /mnt/internal_sd/update.zip
(No such file or directory)
Installation aborted.
So I understand I can't even begin to flash until I get past this.
Should I find and install this update.zip file (which I'm having 0 luck with). Or am I to wipe and start over again or did i possibly mess up.
Help a noob out here . Much thanks.
First of all, get rid of Rom Manager.
Now, I assume you are still on froyo.
You can either use odin or heimdall to update to gb and flash a custom kernel that includes cwm recovery, or flash a custom froyo kernel.
You should find everything you need on the iset thread stickied on the dev forums.

What is the alternative to ROM Manager then?
Or should I ODIN/Hemdaill to an OS like GB that comes with CWM.
Cause thats all i need and I cant get past it.
I boot into the damn recovery then go to look for the ROM file and it's nowhere to be found.
Just going to start from scratch with a CWM installed.
Either heimdall or odin should do it.. look in the iset as I said and there are many packs.
one is an odin pack by jscott and includes cwm recovery already

There is no alternitive to rom manager...sometimes rommanager works...but most of the time itnjust causes soft bricks/bootloops...or does nothing at all
As andros said...odin or heimdal is tour best bet...i would go to qksters uclb3 oneclick heimdall thread and i think in the second post he has heimdal kernel packages that strictly flash only a kernel...its a small download and will get you cwm

Hey thanks guys.
I'm used to ODIN so I've been using that regularly.
I used a method to flash with Odin a Stock GB that comes with root and red CWM recovery. Got it from qkster's thread.
Emancipation ROM is really nice but I don't want GB. Every time I try to go to ICS, I have some kind of problem. I've soft bricked my phone twice now lol. But since there is alot of help in the forums, I've been able to go back to Stock or just flash back to Emancipation, it's become sort of my backup lol.
I'm sure I'll get it sooner or later.
Thanks again guys.
On a side note, the Infuse forums are so organized compared to others.
Was just going help my coworer root his HTC EVO and leave him to do the roms by himself, cause I don't want no responsibility but damn those threads are unorganized.
Maybe I'll try to flash that ICS/JB kernel that you, Andros did on that thread.
What a noob.
I have come to realize I am really a nooblet and deserve the title.
After many tries and a couple softbricks, my Infuse is up and running ICS.
It was quite easy, ODINed to a GB with root and red CWM, then flashed Entropy's CM9 as per thread instructions.
Thanks again guys.
