[Q] cwm back up restore tutorial

did a search didnt find anything...
I hear ppl backup and restore there using cwm what does that do ? why does it actually restore?
When you back up using CWM you are doing what is called a nanadroid back up. When you run the back up it creates a complete image of your phone in its current state so all system and data apps, personal settings widgets on your home screen etc are all backed up. So if you flash a new rom and you don't like it rather than starting from scratch you can just restore your nandroid and your phone will be back to the state it was before you flashed the new rom
I would recomend doing a nadroid back up before you flash anything in recovery, some people might say this is required but in my personal experince it can't hurt.

If you flash something in cwm that you were not supposed to, like a theme not designed for your rom, it can cause the phone not boot. If you did a nandroid you can just restore and everything will be back to how it was before you flashed

Nandroid backup & restore...

Just want to make sure if the nandroid backup & restore is really working on Sensation with latest CWM since I have made a bunch of backups and I am heavily messing around with the phone for the past 48 hours lol... Just to be sure this backups are going to actually work in case I screw the phone...

Do remember that clockwork /nandroid restore will not restore the kernel. If you flashed a rom that's using a custom kernel, you will need to flash the stock kernel before trying to restore your backup or you will get stuck in a boot-loop.
Thank you both! Just wanted to confirm!

how do i flash back to the original kernel?
Question. What was the total file size of the Backup (stock ROM)?

Yes, I'd love to know this along with how to get a copy of the original kernel....or is the kernel in the .zip files on the regional oem rom thread?
not working for me
You can find the stock kernel in the second post in the Android Revolution HD thread over in the development section.

isnt the boot.img the kernel and init stuff? i was under the assumption it was backed up when you do a nandroid on most devices (like HTC). the RFS file system samsung uses on their devices prevented us from backing up and restoring a boot.img file so we have to always have a kernel in case of the good ol boot loop
so to go back to stock kernel, i install it to the sd card then flash it in recovery right?

Yeap... That's how you flash a kernel, but not needed if what you want to do is restore from a nandroid backup... To restore just select the nandroid backup you want to restore. No need to flash any kernel prior restoring from nandroid.

since when do you have to reflash a stock kernel in order to flash your backup? I have tried every rom out here for the sensation didn't like any of them and reflashed my backup of stock with no issues....

This is not true. Nandroid contains the kernel image.
You would only have to flash a different kernel AFTER you restore, if you don't want to use the one that you backed up.
To the point, nandroid restore works perfect with 4.0.1.5 CWM. I confirm.
Getting mixed signals here guys. Does nandroid backup / restore the kernel?

Please Help! Restore Nexus S.

I recently unlocked my bootloader, rooted my phone, and install a custom rom. I don't want to have any of this anymore and I want to restore my phone back to its stock OS. I've researched on the internet and everything I tried didn't work. Please help!
Did you try looking here?
I looked there. I can't find any posts about how to fix it.
1. There are stock Roms out there just Google it
2. You didnt make a NANDroid backup first?

[Q] Restore a backup in CWM

Hi.
I want to know if i need to wipe things in CWM before restoring a backup previously made ? Or I can directly restore a backup ?!
Thanks !
When you restore a backup is for a few reasons. When an upgrade has not gone well, a bad root has not gone well for you. Have lost major stuff. So no need for a wipe the restore wipe and set back.
Okay thanks, Because i just tried ICS and HTC Sense 4 on my Desire, but i want to recover all my files. So i backuped. That's why i ask this question.
Did u restore!?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
you dont need to wipe things in order to restore form CWM. It will restore your previous version of rom including your files.
