New Phone Number/Factory Reset Keep Root? - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was about to change my phone number through my carriers website yesterday but in reading the confirmation screen, it said that phone would perform factory reboot.
My phone is rooted w/ bl-unlocked.
Questions:
How will this factory reboot affect my phone?
How "off grid" is my phone REALLY? As far as the whole rooted thing goes?

If you are bootloader unlocked then you should have nothing to worry about!

Root cannot be removed by a factory reset if it was rooted correctly.
SU will stay and will still work.
Settings are wiped nothing is installed or removed.

What do you mean by "off grid"? A hardware number identifying your phone is still sent to the carrier and this is mated with your SIM card serial number. In terms of anonymity you aren't gaining anything by having a rooted phone.

Un-Root with broken USB port?

I am helping a buddy with his Infuse 4G, and his USB port is broken. He has a stock rom on it, but it's still rooted. He needs to replace it for a CLNR replacement phone but we gotta unroot first. How can this be done without ODIN? In the stock recovery it has a flash package option, can it be done that way? If so where can I find the file? The only problem is that SuperUser won't go away lol
Are u going thru att to get the phone replaced if so i sent mine back with root still on it with no problems so to speak but see this thread for further info and see if its something that will help u out at least deleting the system files. Just an idea
I figured it won't be too big of a deal as long as it looks stock with no special boot animations or something, I had a friend return a phone to T mobile that had root but nothing otherwise, stock recovery, etc. But my friend is quite worried because it can be an insane .
won't doing a factory reset from settings > privacy unroot it? it wipes your SD card, so this should be all that you have to do...

I dont think that unroots it...i think there is a master crazy dialer code that might. i was undery the impression that factory reset is just the same as wiping data

Wiping cleared all but super user, what's the dialer code?

Getting a replacement at one of AT&T's "repair shops"

I was just on the phone with a rep because of a spot on the screen that came from the factory. I was going to get a replacement over the phone but she advised me to go into one of these AT&T repair shops to get it checked out so I dont get charged if the warranty dept. decides the damage was my fault (which it wasnt)
So, are they going to somehow go into my settings and see that my phone is rooted and I flashed a ROM?
Should I just play it safe and do a factory reset?
Also, if I do a factory reset, will that remove clockwork mod? I want to do a backup before restoring so I can go into the shop without worrying about anything.

They will still know if you unlocked the bootloader. Are you just rooted?

Bootloader is unlocked.
Will they also know if I did a replacement through the phone?
As far as I know AT&T's device centers don't have the HOX yet and if your bootloader was to be unlocked odds are they wouldn't care lol. They'll replace a phone out of warranty also do repairs to phones without charging.. they're an odd bunch.

Factory reset won't affect your recovery (clockworkmod) and honestly, as long as you have a sense rom, they won't know the difference. they won't reboot the phone into the bootloader to check. I can almost guarantee this. If you show them your screen, they should only need to glance at it to tell that something is wrong with the screen and no further investigation necessary. You are golden in my opinion.
I did this with a dead pixel and I was rooted with bootloader unlocked running a custom launcher (so it didn't even look like sense)

Just relock your bootloader and ruu to 1.85. It's the safest way to go. It'll still say relocked but you'll be stock at least. If you have supercid then you have nothing to worry about. When you get your phone back just unlock again.

[Q] Relocking bootloader?(or other solutions)

Long story short, due to unexpected circumstances I think I shorted some pins in the tablet connector which messed up its USB host capabilities. I don't particularly want to lose my tablet to Asus for the duration of their assessment and fix(and/or receive a hefty bill for their services), but I'm a bit desperate to get it working with the dock again.
Is there a way to remove the custom recovery and relock the bootloader? I installed TWRP and rooted it(I know I can just unroot by factory resetting it). If anyone has any other solutions to offer I'd gladly consider them too.
From what I understand, even if you could find a way to lock the boot loader again, Asus has a list of serials for the tablets that have unlocked using their boot loader unlocker. That's one of the reasons people are having issues getting the unlocker to work right now. They aren't registering their tablets. Once they have registered their tablets with Asus, they are able to unlock the bootloader within a few days.

Ah, so they've already registered my tablet as unlocked(or rather, registered me as a hacker ). I've read somewhere that rooting/unlocking voids your software warranty but they'll still fix hardware issues, is that true?
Pretty sure they'll cover hardware related issues. I've read where several members here have been successful getting defective or hardware failure covered.
Just let them know its a hardware related issue.

So I decided to do a factory reset to check if that would help and in case I have to return the device to Asus for technical support, and after I did that the connector seems to have worked just fine. Since I already made a full backup with TWRP I decided to see if it was a problem with any software I recently installed, I removed some recently installed apps(and ones I no longer use and lo and behold, it appears the problem disappeared after I removed AdAway.
Flash full stock ROM before you give it on warranty (means, no recovery, no root, nothing).

I already did and figured out it WAS a software issue I wasn't about to give it up for technical support without a fight haha

[Q] Does unlocking necessitate/cause a factory reset?

I currently have a Motorola Photon 4G running Android 2.3.4 and build 198_7. Simple question: If I unlock, will I be reset to stock?
The reason I ask...
Not long ago, I was running an installation of 198_6. For grins and giggles (and because I knew I'd be flashing the 198_7 SBF later), I flashed derpunlock.sbf, and successfully unlocked. I got into CWM 5.0.2.8 just fine. But after unlocking, I found my phone had been reset to stock. All I had done was flash derpunlock.sbf with RSDLite, then unlock using fastboot. I didn't think that would send me back to square one with a covert factory reset, but it did.
I should have unlocked right after updating to 198_7. But I didn't, because I'm an idiot. Now, I've put hours into configuring my phone, and don't want to lose it with a surprise reset after unlocking. Backing up with MyBackup and Titanium Backup (which I've done) help, but they don't fully cut it.
Does anyone know? Please.

Yes unlocking will usually do a factory reset. It will inform you on the phone and ask if you want to proceed though. I have never used a Motorola though, so you may want to ask in the specific Q&A forum for your device.

Thank you very much. I certainly wasn't prompted the first time I unlocked and a reset was done. I guess I don't see why it would be any different if I unlocked again.

[DELETE]How to secure devices with soff or unlocked bootloaders?

I was reading that when you unlock your bootloader or soff the device, it becomes vunerable to scripts which delete the gesture and password files (via recovery), thereby unlocking the device.
One possible solution I can think of is full device encryption, but even then if a device gets stolen, a flash of custom rom, imei change, will wipe everything.
On the other hand, a locked s-on bootloader with no usb debugging cannot be altered in anyway.
So, is it possible to achieve that level of security after soff or locked bootloader without loosing either?
The simple answer is pretty much a no. But, on reflection even with the stock recovery you can factory reset the stolen phone and get access to all the stuff that was on the sd card, and then the person could even move on to s-off the phone ect.
So as long as you are careful and don't lose your phone ect you should be ok a good quote to remember here is "all security can be broken if you have physical access to the device."
Just my thoughts on the matter
