Way to view/control screen without touching phone? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Dropped my phone down a stairwell and the screen is broken and does not come on. I have a replacement screen coming, but want to be able to take some backups just in case.
Is there a way to view, and control, the screen, without the screen itself working? I've tried Android Screencast but can't get control. Any tips?

TeamViewer is free for personal use and lets you remote in and control the device, you can also try Android VNC Server, but if you cannot see the screen these would be had to setup or open.

I have TeamViewer installed, but see no way to log into the phone without being able to start the app and see the screen.

My only other suggestion would be to setup adb on a pc and pull the files you need through that.

Just to follow up, I was able to find no way to control the phone. Replacing the screen/digitizer was quick and very easy, though. Took less than 10 minutes.

Did you enable the USB Debugging? if so, you can control use adb, otherwise, there is no way.

[Q] Sensation XE - display not working after waterdamage

Hello,
My phone was waterdamged and stop working completly.
I opened the case and tried to dry it.
after 48 hours of trying various stuff, there is blank screen, but:
1. The phone is booting fine, charging led is working.
2. Using Wondershare-Mobilego, i can backup all the content.
3.The touch interface seems to be working fine, i can see the menus via mobilego duplicate screen (can open the sms box or whatsapp and etc.)
4.Incoming messages keep coming...
I`m so frustrated that i`m using the phone blindly or like remote desktop.
Is it software of hardware fault?
THANKS

After water damage you can only expect hardware damage. to verify - when turning on the device, do you see anything on the screen? you can also reboot to bootloader (via the key combination or via the command adb reboot bootloader (and to reboot back to android use fastboot reboot).
If the bootloader shows nothing, 100% hardware (although there is really no need to check, probably is). You can try changing screen, but the problem could also be in the socket (but I think if it were the socket the phone would not even boot). Worth a try.
Thanks, but no good...still blank screen - no display.
As i mentioned, the phone is functioning well (as seen at duplicate screen).
When you offering to change screen, you mean the lcd touch digitizer only?
I don`t need to buy the screen itself, right?
(I can`t parse outside links yet from ebay)

I mean the LCD itself. If touch is working, the problem is the LCD itself, not the digitizer.
You right, it seems that the touch working fine.
You think that a LCD display screen replacement would be the best try? can you paste a link from ebay please?

[Q] Mirroring Help

Managed to completely break my screen and somehow I managed to turn on some pesky alarms and such on my phone and it's extremely annoying, so I need to find a way to turn them off.
Jokes aside, is there anything I can do to mirror my phone to my computer and use my mouse and keyboard to control it? I've seen some where you have to start it on the phone first, but that's out of the question for me since the screen is 100% unusable.
Edit: I'm thinking the best course of action is to connect my USB mouse to it and use adb screenshots to work my way around to get AirDroid going.

An app to turn off the screen WITHOUT locking.

Hi All,
I was hoping you guy might be able to help me out.
The LG G3 is awesome, i love being able to turn the screen on and off without using any buttons.
One bit that i think could use some work is that currently, when the screen is on, you can tap the notification bar twice to turn the screen off, however, i find that this doesnt work so well all the time.
I have Nova launcher and i wanted to link a two finger swipe gesture with an app to turn the screen off however...
All the apps on the store only seem to offer you the option to turn the screen off and lock the phone immediately at the same time. Does anyone know of an app that will let me turn the screen off, but NOT lock the phone immediately, and just leave the lock settings to the system defaults.
It seems pretty straight forward but i've tried about 30 apps on the store and all of them only screen off and lock, none allow you to do it without locking the phone immediately.
Any help would be really appreciated!

Thanks for the idea. I just tried and had no joy. It can trigger an action when i turn the screen off myself, but it wont turn the screen off for me.
Any other ideas?

You could try an app like Button Savior. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.smart.swkey.nonroot
It has the option to swipe from the side to bring up the buttons, and from what I understand, the power button on it is exactly the same action as pressing the power button on your phone. You could tweak it to try and get it to the solution you want, but I think at least the button should be what you are looking for.

My phone seems to do the same action either way. I think I know what you are talking about. It seems that on previous roms, the screen could go dark, but if I woke the phone back up it wasn't actually locked. What about this app? It seems to distinguish between the two.

I use "No Lock" when I want to switch off the phone but bypass lock settings when I turn it on. Is that what you mean?

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion... The problem with that app is that the phone won't lock until I go back in and disable it... I want the phone to use the same system timeout so if I do leave my phone lying around it will lock after 3 or 5 minutes on its own.

Take this.
Note: Needs Root
Not sure it it covers your needs, but I'm using SkipLock combined with Gravity Screen
SkipLock let's you bypass the lockscreen (and pincode) when your phone is connected to either a trusted WIFI network or a trusted BT-device (carkit!).
As soon as you get home you'll turn on your screen and you the lockscreen as usual, but from that point on it's lockscreen free until it disconnects with your wifi network.
So when you turn off the screen the screen goes black, but as soon as you turn it on again you'll see either the homescreen or your last opened app.
It works really GREAT!
Gravity screen is not needed but makes it even easier. It automatically turns your screen on when you pick up the phone, and turns it off when you place it down (configurable). It also features Pocket Mode so it will turn the screen off when you put it in your pocket and on again when you take it out. Worst part was getting used to NOT press the power-button anymore

Hi, Thanks for the suggestion - i just tried the app and it has a non-root version, but that just basically turns the screen black, leaves the notification bar and navi buttons and doesnt actuall replicate pressing the power button.
I cant root my phone either as i need to use banking apps and these dont work with root.
Any other ideas?

This sounds like a cool set of apps, but I'm quite pedantic about my phone and the way it uses battery and with all the sensors working. I'm not sure its right for me, but its cool none-the-less.

Skiplock doesn't use up any battery. Gravity MIGHT, but there are options to choose that use up more or less battery.
Don't know about needing root though...
Hi, I have been looking for this too....no solution? I use the trusted places and devices to keep my phone unlocked when i am home, and when in the car (connected to bluetooth) but of course turning off the screen also locks it.
SkipLock isn't compatible with my Lollipop G3 - any solutions that work on Lollipop? I've been using Tasker but somethings it messes up things a bit so I would like to try something else

[Q] Forcefully Recovering Data from a Nexus5

I was using a new Nexus5 and had not enabled backups as was traveling but dropped and broke the screen.. now screen is not working and looks like logicboard/motherboard has some issues too so a replacement LCD also doesnt works(only shows pixels on it)
but the phone is still working as iit syncs and beeps on emails, bbm and whatsapp messages etc.
is there a way to recover data from it.. the most imp data to recover includes camera pics, bbm history & pics and whatspp messages and pics.
Running lollipop 5
The USB debugging is not checked and the screen lock is there so phone gets detected when connected to PC but folders are not visible.. is there any way to overcome this?

ADB and bootloader are two different things. But if you can boot into custom recovery, you can use MTP.

The ADB and custom recovery can only work if there is a display.. without that not an option to fiddle anything.. In my humble opinion the solution will be somewhere on the hardware level getting access to the file system

Actually it is. You need to be sure to turn your phone off first. Then manually boot to bootloader (power+volume down button). When you connect the phone to PC it will recognize it.

I guess you can do a adb pull without display.
1. Reboot into bootloader - Requires no display
2. Move to recovery - guess two Vol- press, again requires no display
3. U should be having recovery version of adb once into recovery
4. Use adb pull to get all the files -- Requires no display.
So i guess should be possible to get all the files without display. Ain't i right?
Please let me know if I am wrong or having any trouble proceeding.

Yes,I do it all the time. It works fine.
It sounds like you got a new panel for it. Are you sure that its not a bad panel. Ive gotten a few bad ones off ebay. (they were brand new,but most are from china)
Also inspect the connectors, both board side and panel side, with a bright light and a magnifier. Look for anything like a fragment of glass or plastic or a spec of dirt. Make sure all the pins are where they should be and not bent.. Also inspect the board the same way. Look for any physical damage. Theres likely to be little you can do to fix it,but if you find something came off at least you wont be spinning your wheels wondering why it wont work.
My first instinct is that you may have simply gotten a bad screen.
IF everything looks good, do you have a pattern, pin or PW on it? Just because the screen does not work, does not mean the digitizer does not work. I have a crazy idea, in fact its something I'm making up off the top of my head right now,but it should work. You will need to figure out where the things you need are on the screen. Its easiest if you have Its easiest if you have a working nexus 5 in front of you,so if you can find a friend with one it will help.. If not someone here can probably help you.
If you have a pattern lock on it,its probably easiest. Take the other Nexus, bring up a pattern lock screen. Take your piece of paper and put it over the screen. Run your fingernail around the edges to make a crease. Make a dot over the camera with a felt tip pen. You will use these to align your paper. Now make a dot over each of the buttons for the pattern lock. Also make a dot over each of the soft buttons. (the menu, home and back buttons) THere are a couple ways you might do this. You could make several papers or you could use colored pens.
I suggest colored pens so you dont have to move your paper and can tape it in place. You will want to get your example phone into the same configuration. For instance you obviously need the lock screen type to be the same. Your goal is to turn on usb debugging. Then you can get your files.
So,go through each step with a different colored pen. First bring up the lock screen. If its a pattern, mark the buttons. If its a password, you will need to mark the keys. I would just put a dot in the middle and reference a picture of the keyboard to get the right ones. That should get you in and let the phone connect to your computer so you can copy files. If you had to,you could probably even enable usb developer mode like that y using the drop down menu from the top of the screen.

If the phone is not unlocked,it will wipe everything when he unlocks it.
yeah bro I think you can recover the files.( yes you can in the windows environment ).you need to have the adb.
just in case you know a friend who does own a nexus and if you can burrow that for 30min( just for a reference ) , you will be approximately knowing in which menu the phone does lie.
}power off the device( both in case )
}boot to bootloader ( power button + volume down keys)
}now 2 times volume up key and then power key ( boots you to the custom recovery )
}now connect the device to the PC ( sdk+adb enabled ) you can now use the MTP
}or use the abd commands to pull data into the PC
let me know if that worked...
@wickedrody Do you have custom recovery?

Broken screen, with constant phantom touches preventing everything

My phone's screen was broken, so the touch sensor (capacitive) sensing constant phantom touches, which prevents to do anything with it, even with mouse connected on OTG.
I can't connect on ADB, as once i've allowed my PC to always connect to it, yet asks for a confirmation at every connect, which i can't grant, as if i unlock the phone with fingerprint, the phantom fingers instantly tap the dialog away.
I can connect with fastboot, but it's useless.
My next idea is to disconnect the screen ribbon cable (xiaomi "engineers" were so smart that the display and the digitizer are on same cable... which is weird, as redmi 7 had seperate cables and this redmi note 7 have one), and buy an MHL type-c -> HDMI-OTG adapter, and connect it to TV, and the mouse, then i can access my files... however i doubt that it will work
Any tips how to hack it or something? I'm thinking about that it maybe possible to electronically disable, or "burn out" the touch sensor without disconnecting the screen ribbon. Is that possible? Perhaps the cleaning of screen would kill the phantom?
Any help?
I would like to help you but never had to deal with such a problem.
But let's try:
1. What do you want to achieve? Do you want to backup your data?
2. The phantom touches are instantly and do not stop?
3. Don't know if that works, but... Is the mouse connected to OTG always on the same place? Like does it appear on a fix default position on your screen every time you plug it in or does it remember its last position (or is it random)?
If you know that you could maybe try to detach the display and use the mouse to enable your adb connection constantly. And if that works you could use scrcpy (screencopy. Find it on github) to show your devices display on your computer without having to use your real smartphone display.

Its a quite common problem, however the most people just buy a new phone, and dump the broken one.
I want to backup one application's data particularly, yes.
Phantom touches are constant, always at the menu buttons.

I don't know. What exactly happens if you try that?
You connect your phone with your computer and run some adb command (e.g. "adb devices") and then it asks you to authenticate, right?
And then?
Another question which I think you'll answer with "no": Did you unlock your bootloader?
I just cant do it, and didnt fide any help for it on google.
If i connect it, and list the adb devices, i see "unauthorized" and a dialog pops up on the phone to allow adb connection, but as soon as i unlock the phone the dialog goes away as the phantom touching the menu buttons...
No, the bootloader is not unlocked, else if would be able to save with twrp. I can unlock it with fastboot, but it does a factory reset on unlock...

I have another idea. If you refer to the menu buttons you refer to the home, back buttons right? If your phone support it (and phantom touches allow it) you can go to setting -> System -> Gestures -> System navigation -> gesture navigation. Then click on the setting next to "gesture navigation" and turn of navigation hint.
Whatever those phantom touches are touch now – it won't be any of those menu buttons since they disappeared.
Now, hopefully adb authorization works.

As i wrote, i cant do anything on UI, as the phantom always touch back to the menu, or to the photo app, which i cant even pull out from quick access due to the phantom.
Having a ghost touch issue, it's probably not a problem with the software, but it's a hardware problem with your display and the way it's housed inside the chassis of your phone. If you're an engineer and happy taking electronic devices apart ( and have all the required specialty tools ), then you might fix the issue by simply disconnecting the screen from its data connectors for a while and then reseating the screen.
