[Q] Nexus S Brick - Any hope of recovery? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
I've recently had a lot of trouble with my old S. I randomly lost root, which caused my phone to go into a boot loop. After multiple attempts to reflash to another ROM, it just wasn't going. I decided to go back to square one and flash back to stock. It seemed to have completed, rebooted, then stuck on the Google logo with lock icon for a good 15 minutes. I did a battery pull, and now it won't even power on. I connected it via USB, and it does have some life in it - however Windows only recognizes it as "Unknown Device", instead of being in ADB or fastboot. I tried installing the USB drivers to it, but no go.
Is it curtains for my little friend? Cheers!

Do you have Nexus root toolkit (free windows app). And can you power up to boot loader?

I do have the root toolkit, however I cannot power up to the boot loader. The phone is 100% a brick besides from the response on the PC when I connect it via USB.

My computer won't recognize my phone at all unless I have it turned on..
Does it even give you a charging animation?

Pull the battery and sim out and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, reinstall battery (sim is not required) and try to boot it into bootloader if successful connect to toolkit and let the toolkit flash to stock..
if it won't go to bootloader, try booting normally and feel if it has that small vibration at the start... or will boot to logo/system..
If you can boot up fully don't turn it off/pull battery, make sure you are set up for debugging and let the toolkit flash to stock..
If you get only to the logo wait a couple minutes and see if it reverts to bootloader/recovery.. connect to toolkit and flash to stock..
If you only get a vibration and no screen, it may be screen related??? (only a slight maybe)
Fingers crossed for you and your Nexus S..

[Q] Softbricked nexus S?

Hello XDA-community,
I got a nexus s, i rooted the phone and got a custum rom up and running.
then i decieded to flash a new kernel.
Once done, i rebooted my phone.
The screen turns on, but stays all black,
I cant boot into recovery (volume up + power)
If let the phone on for 10 mins to see if it boots up, but nothing, i tried to dial my number on a other phone but got me straight to voicemail.
If i put the phone on the charger the screen turns on, But stays all black too.
I searched xda and other sites but could not find a solution, help appreciated.
What is your ROM and kernel combo? Do you have any other kernels you can flash? Did you make a nandroid backup before you flashed that kernel?

I cant flash anything thats the problem,
i had cm9.1 on it : downloaded from cyanomod website.
Android started up, everything was working, but i wanted to flash a other kernel: TNS132-JB-ALPHA12 found on ( i cant post links becouse i am a new user)
got a new problem: screen wont turn on at all only when i put the phone on the charger it turns on, but all i see is a black screen.
I have not made a backup whatsoever, i even didnt clear cache when installing new kernel.
I know i am a totally noob, its becouse i have owned a hd2 and i could do anything with that device wich was unbrickable.
the first mistake was not reading here for 4 or 5 days
prior to jacking your phone up
since you probably need your phone befor that...
pull the battery
put it back
hold vol. up and hit the power button
boot to recovery
reflash the rom you had working
now
rectify the first mistake...
By the looks of it you've flashed a Jellybean kernel on an ICS ROM.

You need to use adb to push an ICS compatible kernel on to your phone, then flash it. Like someone said earlier, your kernel is meant for jellybean (android 4.1), and your ROM is based off of ice cream sandwich (android 4.0). If you've never used adb, look up a guide here in the nexus s forums on xda, I'd link you but I'm on the mobile app so I cant.

[Q] Help Phone won't turn on after trying to flash liquidsmooth

Hi,
I rooted my phone today and everything worked fine, I then went to CWrecovery to flash the liquidsmooth rom I downloaded. I selected to reboot device after a successful install but now it won't turn on, no screen, led, etc. if I plug into computer I get a contection noise from my computer but thats it. Can't boot into download mode or recovery... What can I do to fix?
thanks
Did you unlock and flash a custom bootloader?
I think so. I rooted/unlocked bootloader.
Did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2046439&nocache=1
For Both Root and Unlocked Bootloader ***RECOMMENDED*** - Download SuperSU + Unlocked Bootloader to your SD Card
Then tried to flash LiquidSmooth from forum.

Did you wipe data factory reset prior to flashing the rom?
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
no i didn't
If you forgot to wipe the phone would still attempt to boot. It just might send you into a bootloop
Anthrax unreleased towchwiz
Yeah except I can't get it to boot at all. No response to turning on, pulled battery, waited 30 minutes, then tried to boot again. nothing. not even the LED. now if I leave the battery out and plug the phone in to the computer the LED turns on but that's it. At the computer end I get the sound for plugging in a USB device, however it doesn't do anything else and there were no drivers for the device: QHSUSB_DLOAD.
Is it hard bricked?
Try getting into recovery by holding volume up+home button +power button at the same time. Hold it for a few seconds and it should vibrate and one the Samsung logo comes on you could let go. At this point I would either try re flashing or restore your most recent backup download another rom and try again.

Tried that, as well at the Vol Down+ home+ power. Neither worked, no vibrate or screen boot.
Take your battery out for at least 5 minutes than put on the charger for awhile (couple hours) than try again. If none of this works hero had a wire up on how to fix your soft brick phone that might help. If your bootloader wasn't unlocked I'm not sure what to do to fix that. I hope you get it going. I'll post that link if I find it.

My friend had this happen (not rooted), she took it in to Verizon and they got it going by holding VOL UP and DOWN, and then POWER.
I'd never heard of this technique, but it worked for her.
Post the link and exact file name of the rom you flashed.

HTC ONE S stuck in boot cycle, nothing works

Hi, as the title, my HTC ONE S is stuck in an infinite boot loop. I've tried factory reset, restore, it goes to HTC logo then restarts. Only way to stop it is to do a power down. When this started (yesterday) I caught the battery icon as a solid gray, with an (!) in the middle. A quick google showed that this means the battery is out of calibration (odd, it was working fine up until yesturday, and I still had 2/3 battery when this happened). I've since ordered a replacement battery, but I wanted to know if anyone has something I could try?
Phone is locked, unrooted.
I called the Virgin Mobile Canada, since I got the phone around this time last year, they said I was 10 days out of warrenty.. go figure
ps: I plugged in the phone until the LED was solid green. It still restarts during boot.
Have you tried running an RUU? Mot sure that you can if you can't get fully booted, but it may be worth a shot. If not, since you're out of warranty, there is not better time to root and run a custom rom.

Try run a RUU and if it does work . Download a battery calibration app and see if that fixes it aslong as you have the bootloader your fine . As the ruu requires bootloader . But you need to be fully booted up into android . To do that go to bootloader -> Fastboot make sure usb is connected And make sure you have Fastboot files (Google . Fastboot files ) then open cmd from where the Fastboot files are (shift right click in folder then open command line here )then do command 'Fastboot reboot' should boot u up into android . Make sure you try let your phone charge don't worry about the led
Hit thanks if I helped

if you don't care about your data, just run the RUU.exe for you device, but make sure you install the drivers from HTC first.

fastboot says "fastboot usb" but Adb devices and fastboot devices show nothing. whats happening is that even if i choose to power down in the fastboot menu on the phone, it will boot back up on its own, into the bootloader. I am able to boot to the OS if i am lucky by hard powering off (holding the power button), then letting go of the power button, and at a precise moment pressing the power button.
I've had the same problem, what i did was put my pc a few weeks back using recovery points. Then i was able to use fastboot again. After that flash a stock boot.img trough fastboot. My phone started up again.

Windows can't detect Nexus 5 anymore. How to lock boot loader and restore to factory

Something happened to my Nexus 5 and I can't access it under Mac or Windows. I have ADB installed. It just wont show up in Windows even as an unknown device. Just nothing. I tried to put it in fastboot (bootloader screen) but still it cannot be detected. I checked MTP check box and it wouldn't make a difference. I thought I can still use the phone but now it keeps charging as USB even when plugged to an external charger. I tried different cables and chargers and still the same result.
Is there a way to lock the boot loader and reset the phone to factory default without using fastboot command on Windows? is there something I can do giving that I have root access to the phone in sequence to get it back to factory so I can return the phone? I have TWRP installed as recovery.
you can lock the bootloader with an app, if you have root. but you can only flash the factory img via fastboot. if needed, here are the instructions, but you do need to reinstall your driver http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701 . you can try another driver, like koushes adb driver, maybe thatll help.
Cool. I have root and I got bootloader locked and tamper set to untamper using the app. I have the original Google image installed but the recovery is TWRP. I think I just need to remove TWRP and I should be all set. Is it possible to do that without fastboot ?

Yes, you can flash stock recovery via TWRP (in a zip, or flash the,img via flashify.... There is a link in the resources section of teh sticky thread (see signature) to recoveries (including stock)

Again, an app will work, flashify. You'll need the stock recovery image to flash in it.

Yeah, sounds like a borked USB connector. Some solid advice, but you could also use ADB over network. Would only help to prove it is the USB. If you can connect, get all data and then fastboot stock. Who knows, USB might work again, probably not though.

Multiple reasons, when Nexus 6 comes out, I want to sell N5 pand buy N6. Right now who wants to buy it like this?
But more importantly, USB charging speed even when plugged to AC adapter is very slow (USB charging) and is unacceptable. I'm a heavy user and I charge my phone mid day. I will try to test charging using a charging cable rather than data cable and see if that forces AC charging.
Lastly, I want to copy things fast to the device when needed. USB is much faster than 1 MB/s using Airdroid. This is not the first time. Last time, I returned it due to issue with GPS chip getting disconnected (a well known issue with first batch of N5 phones). Sad, this happened now.

How do I fastboot flash stock over WiFi ? I think ADB over network goes away as soon as the phone boots to fastboot.

You can't use fastboot over WiFi. ADB over network also automatically disables itself after a reboot.

Yeah, sorry, I have never been in the situation and was just theorizing about how it could be worked out. Brilliant people here and thank you everyone.
try a difference PC. every time I modify my phone I end up having to reflash the google ADB drivers and the MTP drivers.
Charging speed very likely would be cable issue.
