The Padfone Infinity Thread - Android General

On the eve of getting my Padfone Infinity I thought I would start a thread so that users can chat about their experiences with the device and so forth.
So, who else is getting one?
UPDATE: Have the Padfone now. First impressions VERY favourable.
USB OTG testing notes:
USB drives working, including NTFS (first phone besides the Huawei D1 Quad XL to have that). PS3 AND Xbox controllers working out of the box. USB keyboards and mice working - best implementation yet on an Android phone with options for mouse pointer speed and ability to map the mouse buttons to a few different options. USB audio broken, which for me is incredibly disappointing. There is somewhat of a workaround in that USB audio does work with the app USB Audio Recorder Pro, but it is fairly horrible to use as a music player since its real purpose is to allow recording with a microphone.
Oh, and got a second (small) firmware update today...

I'm planning to when the price is lower. Btw, since I saw that you get a lot of thanks here, are you a developer yourself? have you ever port ROM before?
Seeing that previous PF didnt get much activity in the development area, PF2 got better with Paul from Modaco, but I think that's about it, no CM or whatsoever. I would love if some developer had this on their hand and the development starting to progress

Ha, I wish I was a developer. I produce some YouTube videos and try to troubleshoot a lot of peoples problems, and that's where the thanks come from. I do know a very good developer though, and may be able to corral him into taking a look into ROM development.

Nice, It's monday now in my time zone, I believe NZ is not that different from Indonesia waiting for your unit to come and for your review of course

Yeah, its here waiting for me at the Fedex depot. Hoping to collect it during my lunch hour, but if not able to then will definitely be straight after work. So looking forward to it!

UPDATE: Picked it up lunch time, just now really getting to play with it. First impressions favourable. More to come (Twitter is the best way to see what I'm up to with it, my stream of consciousness tweets about new phones always go there first).

Yep.
Currently testing USB OTG and such like, more to follow.

any differences in signal? since I dont have PF2. but PF1 suffer from a loss of signal when you dock it and close, I figured since this was open, it would not interfere with the signal much. any noticable lag when you use tha tablet? can you benchmark using geekbench or whatsoever to test the gpu using the tablet full HD resolution. Sorry if I'm asking too much

Can you compare it with Galaxy S4 or HTC One?
Can you make a review? Because there isn't a good one on the internet.

I definitely will be comparing it to those, I get my One Friday and my S4 Saturday

well, have you received your One and S4? any comparison?

I got mine 2 days ago. I am very impressed of the look and the speed. It is a little too big for me but will get used to it. No problems till now. I am waiting for the official boot loader from asus so I can move gps maps to SD card.

Got the S4, One *should* be with me later today (it is at the Fedex centre a few minutes from my home).
Vs the S4 it is a much larger and heavier slab, but obviously the fit and finish and materials scream quality in comparison.
S4 WiFi reception better than the Infinity, which I'm guessing suffers a little attenuation due to the materials in use.

For GPS installed IGO Primo. A lot better than Garmin.

Really? much larger and heavier? spec wise the dimension is not that different IMO, but yeah, holding it and calculating it from the spec can sometimes be different. lots of wifi reception issues with older padfone also, how bout the gsm/3g signal fare with s4?

Network reception for the S4 seems fine, or at least is equivalent to basically every other handset I've had in the past year or so in the same locations. Ditto the Infinity when not in the pad, reception seems fine, only the WiFi seems to be a bit attenuated by the aluminium body.
...and yes, much larger and heavier. As you say, the impression one has with the device in hand can sometimes bely the measured dimensions. In this case it is very noticeable, but not really in a bad way for the Infinity, it just feels rock solid. Got my One yesterday also. I would say by analogy the One is like a European sports car, and the Infinity a European business car - both attractive and well built with the latter featuring squarer lines and a more understated elegance.

Personally which one is your favorite
and when you said that the reception of infinity when not in the pad seems fine, is that mean there's a reception suffer when in the pad? since it was held tight inside the pad, even iphone 4 suffer from the death grip. just curious ^^

Honestly no idea which is my favourite at this point, from the point of view of internals they are all essentially identical, and that aside they all have pros and cons that balance relatively closely.
In relation to reception and the Infinity:
Cellular network connectivity is fine in the phone, reported signal strength is basically the same as other phones in the same locations. When it is docked in the pad there is a bit of signal attenuation, enough so that in marginal 4G coverage for example it will drop back to 3G when docked (but not when not docked).
WiFi signal strength is not as good as other phones I have at present, however WiFi reception seems unchanged by whether the phone is docked or not.

[Q] Xoom vs Acer Iconia Tab A500

I've had a quick look and found nothing so..
Im purchasing a tab on monday and my choices are the xoom or the a500. From what I can see is they both have the same specs.
But what should I go for?
the acer comes out on monday? i'd go to best buy or wherever and play with both of them side by side and make my decision.
A CHALLENGER APPEARS.
Well, I don't have a Xoom yet, and was planning on getting one probably next week or the week after (WiFi only) but... wow, looks like the Acer Iconia is a serious challenger. Almost $150 less (or about $100 if you find a decent deal at certain places) and the only thing that looks to be of 'lesser' spec is the internal memory at 16GB. However, the SD card slot works out of the box, and I have a 16GB MicroSD card just waiting!
I think I'm gonna have to wait until the Iconia gets out and maybe get one of those instead of the Xoom.
Also looks like the Iconia has the ports on the side (which I like) while still having a dock connector on the bottom. Also has a host USB port next to the micro USB port on the side. Also has the power/sleep button on the side instead of the back (one thing I'm kinda iffy about on the Xoom).

Im picking the Iconia up next week, getting rid of my Dell Streak 7
In the UK the Iconia is £30 cheaper for the same 32GB spec. Well and the Iconia has a USB host port as well which is worth a lot extra.
I played on both in Currys and even though I really liked the Xoom I couldn't justify the extra price and wanted the full USB.
My biggwst problem with the acer tablet is that its from acer. When I think of quality technology acer is not the brand that comes in mind. All the features sound good, but will it really work and for how long?

Iconia and wifi dual band?
... for video i love to have 5GHz Wifi, read in the transformer thread the xoom has dual band (2,4 & 5 GHz). What's about the iconia?
From the manual:
Connectivity
•Bluetooth 2.1+EDR & A2DP support
•Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n WLAN (802.11n 2.4GHz only)
•GPS

Note the $150 price difference. I'm not sure this is due to quality, but I'll have my Iconia tablet on Monday or Tuesday. I did get hands-on a Xoom today at Best Buy. It's a very solid piece of kit.
I definitely wanted the host USB port, and I like the location of the jacks and buttons better. The power/sleep button on the back of the Xoom? What were you thinking, Moto??

Hey, I recognize the name from the Archos 101 forums...
Doing side by side would be a good idea. Screen and build quality would be the things I would try to focus on, since most of the stuff 'under the hood' is the same, save the Iconia's 16GB storage.
Then consider the $150 price difference and decide whether the Xoom is worth it.
With the WiFi only iPad selling for $499 now, I think Moto's gonna have to drop the price to stay competitive.

Apart from the differences already mentioned, I don't think the A500 has a notification/charger indicator.
Also, the only Acer A500's I've seen in the UK shops have 32GB.....

In the end I got the Acer Inconia a500 32GB, It works perfectly. The build quailty feels solid and I did manege to look at them both next to each other. The overall size off the xoom is smaller because off the bezil. The screen quailty looked exactly the same on full britness. Nothing that I saw made me think that there was a 30 pound price difrence.
If you care the acer picks up 10 points off touch. While i've heard the xoom picks up 16. I think 10 is overkill let alone 16. But it could be a plus for the xoom. But that can be countered with a usb.
The acer is also heavery.
>The acer is also heavery.
So you can heave it farther than the Xoom? I insist on a first-hand demonstration! Vids or it didn't happen!

I now have a tablet which I Think is perfect and with a working sd card reader out off the box. I can do a recording off the Iconia when I get back in
I was mostly curious about two differences. I heard the Acer had only 5 hours of battery life as opposed to the Xooms 10. Which isn't a huge difference but those figures are usually larger than what I find with my devices. What kind of battery life are you guys seeing on your Xooms/A500s?
My other worry was I heard there was an Acer UI layed over honeycomb. I forget where I heard that but after my terrible experience waiting for Samsung to update my Captivate from 2.1 to 2.2 after 2.3 had been released for 4 months (luckily XDA came to the rescue), I was really looking forward to the stock experience the Xoom has. If the A500 is subjected to manufacture updates rather than straight from Google updates that would be a big minus in my book.
Odd that the ad above shows a 5 hour battery life... I ordered mine from Best Buy, and just checked the site, it says up to 8 hours.
We'll see.
I just got to play with the Acer and XOOM for the first time in currys an wow the XOOM jus isn't done justice in photos. It's sexy an sleek. The Acer looked bulky and kind of "old" technology in you understand me. Big bezel, nasty gray plastic colour. Kind of cheap looking.
Galaxy Tab::Tapatalk
The battery life says 8 hours on the box. Does quite well with the battery too. When you start playing some games (especially from the tegra zone) the battery wont last anywhere near
alias_neo clearly you just looked. It has a metal feel to it and the build is solid. Feels like the xoom compaired to build quailty. I do prefer the xoom's looks though.

My A500 lasts about 8/8.5 hours of full use (videos, music, browsing, apps etc).
There is no ACER UI, interface is stock honeycomb. There are just some acer apps which you can easily remove, or just not use them if you dont like them.

Besides use over looks. I like the usb and the working sd out off the box, and with all the issues all the wifi xooms seem to be having on here. I think I made the right choice.

You are correct, I just looked at the Acer. Had no interest in touching it, although I did have a quick flick around on the screen since the tablet itself was in a holder.
Still looks overall quite ugly, but the screen was certainly brighter than the XOOM.
I won't buy Acer hardware though, they tend to bite off more than they can chew and their hardware commits suicide. Seen it time and time again.

Why are people ordering/buying this tablet when there are known issues already?

After already reading a few issues about I/O performance and some build quality issues how come people are still ordering the tablet? It would actually benefit us more if we STOP spending our money on flawed, quality control issue products then buying them up. The thing is, if we all keep just buying buying and buying no matter what condition the product is in, then nothing will really be done to resolve anything that ever comes up.

Some people don't think that it is a big deal, or that Asus will fix it later. Some people just want to see it for themselves.
the average consumer will never care or deal with I/O lol ! as long as the thing runs angry birds 499 is a great price !
Because its well documented to be a software issue on the Prime. There are temporary workarounds that appear to be good enough while we wait for Asus to fix the issue, and pretty soon we'll have custom roms which on the prime completely solved the IO issue.
Besides, name any other high res 10" Android tablet made by a company that's well known for good dev support on XDA. Yeah, not finding any, are you?

If you poke your head into its dev section (or more importantly, that of its 510 predecessor) you'll find it doesnt exactly qualify as good dev support.
The overheating issue is a pretty good reason to avoid it too.

Back to bash it again based on some complaints, which do not seem to be ash issue for most people? Do you work for Acer or what?
And why people are buying it, if io can be fixed, which some claim to have done, it's a beast.

I'm waiting ...can't be sure the IO will get fixed. And who knows what else is lurking.
Why would I pay top dollar, hard earned cash, onto a flagship model they couldn't be bothered to design, manufacture or de-bug properly? Plus the track record with the Prime debacle doesn't help.
And I even seriously considered an iPad 3 over the weekend - sad.
Galaxy Note 10.1 (S-pen but no dock sadly) is just around the corner now and will be sharp competition - I've waited for the Infinity for so long so may as well wait a bit longer.

I don't understand the OP...he constantly complains about everything. If there's a major issue that isn't fixed before my 30 days is up, I'll think about returning it. It's that simple.
I/O performance is yet to be fixed on the TF201 or TF300t. It hasn't been fixed by Asus or in custom roms and kernels.
That said, the reason I bought the TF201(and possibly the TF700t) is because there is no alternative yet with a real keyboard dock. Yes there are bluetooth keyboards, but nothing compares to the transformer tablet/netbook keyboard dock with its additional battery.
The same reason you bought a prime knowing it had wifi issues.
Under normal usage scenarios, you will be hindered only minimally by the I/O issues; it's only when you really pay attention -- which xda frequenters do -- that you can notice, peep and measure all kinds of stuff. The charging keyboard dock is the main selling point of the entire Transformer series, and the TF700 is not an exception to that rule. Add to that the Full HD screen, a fast processor (although it does have to push more pixels) and its overall performance, and you do not have a real alternative at the moment.
As with all tech, if you wait to buy better, you'll wait forever. Just buy into something and enjoy. (Like with people, there are no perfect ones, are there? )

so browsing websites is not normal usage? prime completely locks on content rich websites, ANR messages after some seconds. not only browsers, actually everything that does writes to the filesystem gives ANR messages.
this is not something that only xda members notice!
my girlfriend actually called my Tf201 a SLOMO last week ....! :banghead:
Her SGS2 pwns this device big time.
people on tf300 and tf700 are complaining too..
i think this will be solved in the near future, asus actually announced it in the forums of tf201 and the N7 which uses the same chips does not have issues.
but thats not a reason to downplay these issues - asus is afterall marketing these devices as 'performance beasts', which in most cases ; they arent.
Think for a moment of your favorite car. The car you only could dream about owning. And think that you one day have that car.
I would bet that even if it's your dream car, it would still have something that's wrong with it. But it would still be the best car you could have..
I've been using the infinity now for 2 weeks, and I love it. Yeah I see the io problem, but it's still the best Android tablet money can buy.
>That said, the reason I bought the TF201(and possibly the TF700t) is because there is no alternative yet with a real keyboard dock.
Lenovo IdeaTab S2110 is $500 w/ dock. 1280x800 display, but 1.5GHz Snapdragon 8960 should be an upgrade over Teg3. Dock is said to double battery life, so presumably it'll include a battery. Present status is pre-order.

I do not suffer from any issues while browsing, and I'm not downplaying anything (actually, I'm one of the 'pushers' of the I/O issue in here, which you'd know if you had looked up my posts). It's just that under what I would consider most people's "normal usage patterns" (which differs significantly from ours!), the TF700 is not exactly blazing but not a slouch either. I do concur the SGS2 is faster for me, sometimes, but how do you test if that's due to WiFi throughput, disk I/O or some other factor. Besides, the TF700 has a lot more pixels to push, so it is not exactly a fair comparison, don't you think?
I messaged Gary Keys a few minutes ago asking if the TF700 is also one of the focuses of ASUS' I/O performance investigation, but until I get a definitive answer from him, I'd hold up on the conclusion they have any intent to fix this for the entire TF range.

Buy TF700 or wait?

I've been keeping an eye on the TF700 and now have a chance to grab one for about $345 new. But I know some newer HD tablets were announced at CES and are on the horizon for some time (but I don't think pricing has been announced). At this point should I just hold off to see what is coming, or at that price am I safe to grab the TF700 and be happy for a while to come.
My primary uses will be reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movies.
Thanks to any help!
6 months ago I would have said buy but today I would wait. The lag issue is a pia (at least if you stick with stock rom) and there are some new hd tablets comming out in the next 3-6 months. The only thing i don't know is if they will have sd slots (which is a must for me but appears to be a nono to google).

Thank you for response, I have no issue modding to a different rom, I've done it on other tablets / phones before (heck I'm using a touchpad modded from webOS to android now anyways). But if modding it doesn't help much then that is a concern.
My other concern was the newer tablets will be priced again in the 400-500 range, or the lower priced HD tablets will have specs worse than the transformer already has.

My honest opinion, it's very hard to find a FULLY LOADED TABLET like tf700 with the highest resolution screen. If you willing to unlock to use custom rom. I would say YES 100%.

smart decision!!! bravo!
I bought mine on ebay for 350$ used, well worth it, beautiful screen and nice speed, glad you bought it, 345$ new is nuts, is that a ebay deal or?
Well today there are two alternatives; the acer and nexus 10. The acer is not a bad tablet but it runs a bit warmer and I think it has shorter battery life ( you should check reviews; it's been a while since i've read them). The nexus 10 biggest con is no sd slot but the recent mobiltech - http://www.mobiletechreview.com/tablets/Google-Nexus-10.htm - was over the top positive if you don't need an that sd slot.
-
I'm not unhappy I have the tf700 but the lag thing is a major headache when updating or browsing a lot of web pages and given the price point of the tablet it is a bit downer.
-
Anyways I'll probably stick with it another year and then pick up a 13inch ultra-book (sub 3lb) with 1080p screen.
Yeah I agree be wise to wait. The new Sony, Samsung, Visio etc.. coming out.
I think you should wait ! I own the tf700 and I'm not pleased with it mostly because of the lag and random reboots. Sony announced an HD tablet that seems to be a good one. Anyway you should wait until MWC in Barcelona at the end of next month before you make up your mind.

But Sony announces great things and releases them 6 months after everyone else. That's why their phone sales are in the toilet. They just came out with a new one, nice phone, but it is about the same as a one x, which came out about 9 months ago. I will also admit the lag issue, but still the best one out there, the screen is amazing.
Arguments for the TF700:
- Screen! 1920*1200.
- Screen. 700 nits brightness and great contrast. Almost twice as bright as an iPad 3.
- Keyboard dock. With additional battery and USB.
- microSD card slot, and full size SD card slot in the dock.
- It looks great.
Arguments against the TF700:
- Lag. Slow internal eMMC. (can be worked around with custom ROMs, but not fully solved.)
- Unlocking to install custom ROMs voids your warranty!
- Unlocking is a lottery, and you still can't replace the bootloader on an unlocked device. (the unlocking tool simply does not work for some people and they get no help from Asus.)
- Somewhat unstable, occasional random reboots, hangs with white screen.
- Build quality issues - people report the docking mechanism breaking, light bleed, screen getting loose.
- Only 1 GB RAM and old (for 2013) Tegra 3 SoC.
- Some software that works on other tablets is not available for the TF700.
- Loudspeaker isn't great.
Some folks are replying without seeming to have read the other comments beyond the first. The OP has already made a move on the TF700T.
For the OP's needs "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie", the TF700T is more than suitable.
No doubt the N10 has higher performance, but at the cost of far worse battery life. And you don't really need an N10 for "reading Comics, web browsing, and 720p videos/movie". I guess you don't "need" a TF700T for that either. Lower ranking devices could fit that bill just fine.
But considering the OP has purchased aTF700T, I think they'll enjoy it.

Exactly, the N10 is nice and all, but I couldn't live without my MicroSD card, the OP will enjoy it a lot, the 1080p screen look brilliant with movies and text, and you can store tons of movies on a microsd
I just got my Infinity 64GB about 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty pleased with it so far. I have noticed a bit of lag on the web, but it's not horrible. I'm sure a fix will eventually come out for it. I don't see it staying that way forever. I'd probably like to eventually root it, but I get totally confused when reading the instructions on how to. I've only rooted my HTC Thunderbolt and that was a pretty in depth task.
I have noticed the little black line thing here and there but it's not too bad either. I figure a fix will come out for that as well.
I will say with 64GB I was able to load 13 High Quality (about 3 - 6gb each) movies on this thing and it works great! Think I might try knocking the quality down of the movie to a smaller file size so I can load a lot more on here. Just haven't found a ripper/compressor that I like that can create ripped movies without a lot of artifacting...
I'd say the most bothersome thing I've noticed with this tablet is the Light Bleed... however it's only noticed during a completely black screen. It's always got the factory warranty, plus I purchased a 3 year Square Trade warranty along with it so I'm good until 2016 with this bad boy.
This is a pretty interesting tablet coming out...

Do it if you are comfortable unlocking, flashing trwp, and installing Clean ROM. After doing so my tab is smoother than ipad4 at my work. New tablets may be coming out but i doubt they have a comprehensive KB dock as good as this one. Screen is better than retina display and other HD tableys bc of IPS+, screen brightness is as important as res due to glare issues, IPS+ is great for combatting this, and i have yet to see another device with super IPS+. The screen goes to 600 nits of brightness rather than 300-350, which is the highest ive ever seen in any tablet or laptop. The range of brightness settings is also badass, you can go to incresibly low to incredibly high, which is great but often unmentioned.
I have actually replaced my laptop and desktop with tf700. Since buying and flashing CROMI i have never touched my laptop/desktop. My workflow is better on this bc of gesture/KB dock combination. I couldnt be happier.
Plus the tf700 is a sexy fckin beast, nothing else out there looks as badass. The mfctring quality is sick. I have dropped mine from around 5 ft off the ground onto concrete on pretty much every edge of this device and it is still working as well as when i bought it. Slid off my kitchen table onto tile floor directly onto the creen and slid about 5 feet, yet the screen doesnt have a single scratch. GO TF700 lol.
If you don't need the keyboard dock. Then jump on the Nexus 10. But if you are planning to use the tf700 and rooting with a flashing rom. Pull the trigger. Tf700 rooted is a beast of a tablet. And just provides so much functionality with the dock. I mean extra battery, sd slots, usb slots. The full package.
Its never to late to RETURN IT! And you will find there are now some that have unlocked it had to send it back and Asus will not fix it even though it was a hard ware problem. I had just bought one a week ago. Would not even turn on. Just look at all the new stuff coming out some in just weeks others a few months. Better to wait. I am

Anyone regret buying the shield?

So I'm debating if I should get the shield or wait and see what the new nexus tablet had to offer. So my question is if anyone had any regrets getting the tablet? Any input would be great.
I have ADHD and I get tired of devices extremely quickly usually. I am very excited to receive my Shield Tablet on Friday or Monday however. And I will update you as far as how I like it. Tell me anything you need tested on it and I'd be more than happy to test it.

Yes and No
I was one of the unfortunate ones that got a device with the edge cracking issues. Normally this wouldn't be an issue if I lived in the US. But I live in Australia. So round-tripping the tablet for a RMA will likely cost me about A$60-70 in shipping fees. Because it is cosmetic, I don't feel like I need to rush to do it, so I'll just put up with the cracks until such time as the manufacturer's warranty is about to run out, or when I sell it (whichever comes first).
I have also been having some very strange issues with corporate mail, specifically .pfx certificate storage. I've reported the issue to NVidia, and hopefully they can confirm it is a bug with 4.4.2 and can fix it.
Other than that, I'm happy with the device. The stylus is great for playing touch games like Sky Force 2014, and I'm sure that once I receive my Shield Controller I'll get a new appreciation for just how great the device is.
Thanks for the input guys! Searching for more reviews, I got introduced to the tegra note 7! I'm now torn between that and the shield. Have any of you 2 had the tegra note 7?

I haven't had it but my bestie has it and it's alright (Actually it's pretty good tbh.). But, if you're really into the gaming scene, especially mobile. I would highly recommend the tablet. I know I haven't gotten mine yet. But i had the original shield and I loved it to bits. VERY good device. The entire shield specific apps that came with it were great in my opinion, very speedy device. No lag in anything I threw at it.
The shield tablet is more powerful and is even capable of emulating GameCube games (Albeit barely playable and only the most popular titles) but that fact along with the half life 2 and portal games and the other shield only capabilities was enough for me to send back my shield and get the shield tablet. BUT! If you're gonna go with the shield tablet I don't recommend the shield controller. I recommend the iPega 9023 from here http://www.dx.com/p/ipega-9023-blue...pod-ipad-samsung-htc-more-337604#.VAfh0fmOJh4
(not amazon because it takes at least a month to arrive from china lol)
As it works as well as the official shield controller and even works perfectly for all the shield games and apps like HL2, Portal, GameStream, And GRID Beta.
And I will be reviewing my new 128GB Micro SD, the Shield Tablet and the iPega 9023 on here. look for my review on the iPega in about 2 weeks max but the Shield Tablet and the Micro SD in the next week or less here on the forums for the Shield Tablet.
Any questions or requests on tests I should run feel free to ask.
Thanks for the heads up on the controller! I take it it should work on any tablet right? just in case I don't end up getting the shield

That is correct.
It works with any tablet or any phone with Bluetooth.
Best with larger phones though. If you're gonna use it with a phone. (Which i don't recommend)

I do not have either the tablet or the controller yet, but, I found this info. And I remember reading that an update to Trine 2 fixed this, but here's info from around the web.
Dead trigger 1-2, Nova 3, half life 2, portal, modern combat 4-5, etc perfect
Doom 3 port android perfect.
Nvidia grid ok
Nvidia gamestream ok
And as for Trine 2
Failure to connect the graphics command.
No letter or leave the options menu.
To move the character cursor is not on the right stick.
If I disconnect the controller and restart the game, everything returns to normal.
Any other questions just ask.
Thanks. When you mean perfect I assume 100% working but good means not 100%? So a bit of trick will make trine 2 work.
I already have the shield controller but I like how the one you posted clamps on to the sides. Makes it really portable. And having the extra buttons for home etc is nice. Although I wish it could charge at the same time but the port is blocked.

Correct. Perfect means either 100% or 90% minimum. Good means about 80%.
And the controller I posted has Volume up, Volume down, Play/pause, Fast forward and fast back as well.
Anyone able to figure out the issue of the device losing battery charge WHILE connected to the charger? This is while using the device, of course.
This is the only thing holding me back in getting the tablet.

Not entirely sure. Most likely not, and even if you could it wouldn't be worth the effort in my opinion.
Just buy one off Amazon or eBay or something. It's much easier. Especially if you do it through Amazon. (I just prefer Amazon over almost anything else. As I've always been satisfied with them.)
I'll be getting the Shield Tablet tomorrow. I will do tests. But I need to know what tests to run. lol
People please suggest tests.

That bad? What problems we're you having with it?
I love my SHIELD. 100% worth in my opinion. That being said it does have its issues, but nothing so problematic that it becomes a major everyday issue. So far the only thing thats REALLY bugged was that after about an hour of having the screen on at almost full brightness (I had stay awake on in dev options and was fiddling around in adb) I noticed significant screen burn where the nav bar was, and screen burn from a zooper widget I had been using on the home screen. It goes away though and after keeping the brightness under 80% it never happened again. Other then that, my battery drains while plugged into the wall when I have it in console mode, but I rarely use that feature.
Heres a pic of the widget burn. It went away after about 20-30 minutes.

Next qwerty phone? Photon Q is getting old for today's apps...

Hello guys,
Has anyone found a phone worthy as a successor to the Photon Q? At this point I'm willing to give up SD card, removable batteries and camera button just to get something that has a keyboard, root and can run the basic apps like firefox, messenger, gmail, play store, calendar, adobe reader and youtube without random freezes/pauses in the UI.
Already spent 3 years using a nexus 4 and 5 and I've pretty much "disappeared" from people's lives because I couldn't bear to use any form of touch screen keyboards.
Are people like me condemned to go extinct from the world of mobile computing?
My next phone will be Blackberry Priv. Faster enough, better screen, qwerty, Android. It has all I need (for now at least).
Yeah I'm not too much of a fan of the Priv for a couple of reasons:
- No root and locked bootloader spells a short life for this very expensive machine, no custom roms, no remove bloatware, no adaway etc... Root and bootloader unlock are pretty much what keeps android customizable and open source for the end user...
- Vertical slide out keyboard vs horizontal, only 4 rows, abuses the alt and sym keys to hit numbers and special characters, dpad is 100% analog. Never mind trying to do emojis or working in an ssh terminal, might as well use hacker's keyboard.
- Bugged screen drivers, doesn't use Amoled principles to turn off pixels, results in battery drain, although this might have been fixed in the latest update.
With that said, I'd be willing to try one out if BB unlocks the bootloader and the price falls under 400$CAD for a used unit.
I didn't know it's root-locked. You're right that it may render the device unusable in quite a short time. But if not Priv, then what?
This is such a sad question.
The Moto Z's interchangeable back-panels look pretty promising. I find it hard to believe that there's a bigger market for a projector than for a physical keyboard...
https://www.motorola.com/us/moto-mods
Even just using the breadboard dev kit with a 3D-printed back and a donor keyboard from an older phone could work for a one-off.
http://developer.motorola.com/products/mdk
Apparently there are clip-on bluetooth slider keyboards for iPhone (https://www.amazon.com/iNNEXT-Ultra-Thin-Slide-Out-Bluetooth-Backlight/dp/B01DZJUI18). I've been trying to find something similar for a current-gen android phone but haven't been having much luck.
There's the keyboard + case, but one of the nice things about the slider is being able to hold it while typing and not needing a surface to keep it stable...
If anybody's found something I've missed, I'm sure I'm not the only one feeling the pains of obsolescence...
The z looks promising - especially as it is modular, as most manufacturers it would seem want to just simplify their manufacturing process, it would mean making a generic touchscreen phone, and then batches of accessories to suit demand. Very smart idea.
Repairs/upgrades would be a hell of a lot easier also, just replacing the component that fails, or swapping the accessory for a different task.
Sent from my XT897 using XDA Free mobile app
The main issue of Photon Q for me is the lack of support for the European LTE bands (the most important for me is the 800Mhz band).
In my country, the 3G coverage by HSPA is quite poor and no mobile network operator is expanding its 3G at all any more, the only new coverage efforts happen in LTE.
The Moto Z (Force) looks quite promising. To be honest, I'm simply waiting for a MotoMod qwerty keyboard to appear, and I'm declaring my xt897 dead. Though the Z's camera bump seems to complicate the eventual hw keyboard mod execution.
Let's see what the future will bring us.
Thanks kabaldan for noticing the Moto Z.
I already gave up for another hardwarekeyboard-smartphone and have nearly decided for a OnePlus 3 (6GB RAM edition).
But I think it is better to buy a phone which *might* get an "acceptable" keyboard than none at all. So I guess I will wait a bit longer for the Moto Z.
I'm seriously considering buying a slider bluetooth keyboard for a different phone and then adapting it to fit a current-gen phone. It's not quite as ideal, but most of the slider jobbies for the iPhone are pretty cheap and simple; they have a case part that attaches to the phone, and then the keyboard slides along rails on the case. So I could replace the case portion with a 3D-printed case sized to fit a current-gen phone and the rails for the keyboard. The downsides would be not necessarily having the right android keys (though those have been largely missing since I stopped using my Epic 4g) and it probably wouldn't autodetect when the slider was deployed. It'll probably taking rooting and some keyboard driver hacking to get it all working right, but maybe it'll be a good enough fix when I'm done in like six months...

I did that with Xiaomi Mi4C and iPhone 6 keyboard case. If you like smaller phone then you might want to consider Z5C/X Compact and iPhone 5/5S/SE keyboard case.
I know this is an old thread but I just saw this from a Network World article "How Moto Mods went from concept to product." Paul Fordham, lead mechanical architect on the Moto Mods design team says: "We built a battery module that had a full QWERTY keyboard inside. I could show it to you; it's almost like a slider type concept for people who like the tactile feel of a real keyboard. We had all these different ideas that we hadn't even partly developed."
So, it looks like they've at least looked at the idea. I've posted in the Lenovo forums too. Maybe some of us somehow can wake them up to make this a reality. I am grateful for all of the work done on the Photon Q, it still does a good job with all of the tweaks, but I think all of us Q owners could use a newer phone.

I've been watching the Z also, and have read that thread.
This would be the single best Mod they could release, & I'm currently debating whether to buy a Priv & sacrifice the 5 row keyboard side-slider, or take a chance on the Z in the hope that they (or others) will release a slider keyboard.
Snapping off a keyboard, & replacing it with the speaker mod, or camera or something else - eg, going out & not needing the bulk of the keyboard, so slap on a styled back, or extended battery.
Maybe later you need to write a work email, so slap on the keyboard & type like a demon again. I'd probably purchase an extra keyboard just to have a spare at a convenient location - eg car glovebox.
I'd also buy a Z for the missus, then all the Mods would get a decent use. Extended batteries, camera, speakers, covers, style backs, prob even get the projector, just to have a full set!
All this..... just waiting for the keyboard Mod.

Sadly, there's still no sign of a keyboard attachment for the Moto Z. You'd think that with Motorola being the last manufacturer to produce a hardward keyboard (both the Photon Q LTE and the Droid 4), they'd have made one for this dev device.

I did that with Xiaomi Mi4C and iPhone 6 keyboard case. If you like smaller phone then you might want to consider Z5C/X Compact and iPhone 5/5S/SE keyboard case.

Good afternoon. As far as I understand, it can be done with any of the Xiaomi Mi4. The main thing is that the dimensions of the housing and the location of the cameras have been the same. Please make a photo of how you do mount the keyboard to the phone cover?
I do not expect anything new from the keyboard of the Motorola (
Plus one for a newer keyboard phone. Running CM13, I've had unsolvable problems with my (old, 2006) BT car interface staying connect while I simultaneously use AD2P via a separate BT receiver via the stero AUX in. The other aggravation is that with CM13, I cannot flash nandroid backups when I break my XT897's screen (which happens 2x-3x per year), so I have to reconfigure from scratch.
For those two reasons, I keep being tempted to switch back to stock (BT stack that tolerates multiples connections better w/ my setup), and easy NANdroid backups and sprint activation codes, etc/
BUT, then I try stock and wait 10-15 full seconds for an app to open. Much gratitude to the CM guys and whoever picks up ball from them and runs with it.
My latest problem w/ CM13 is I can't take advantage of the free international roaming in Mexico-- can't get global data to work (either problem with the CM13 settings menu, or with sprints OTA activsation of the the (sprint internal) SIM.
Let us know if anyone finds a qwerty android (I tried the priv, and too big, too hot running stock), and thanks for everyone's contributions to this great community.
