[Q] Newcomer to Table Use - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good afternoon XDA! I want to take a moment to thank you all for this extensive, detailed, and helpful community. I've been coming here since my first smart phone (EVO 4G) and lurking ever since. I've always toyed around with different Linux distros, and you guys helped me move my experience to mobile when the time came.
Now, I've only just moved into the growing world of tablets. I received a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 (now rooted and running CM10.1) and have had tons of fun playing with it and learning the software.
Now, as much fun as I've had with it, it will soon be time to make it practical as a work and university device. User-friendly office tools, note-taking, and photo-editing software is what I need. What would you guys recommend to a noobie like me to get as fluent and useful work experience out of my new tablet as possible?
Thank you all again, and apologies if I stuck this in the wrong area of the Tab 2 section!

Quick Office is looking very very nice! I won't always have a net connection, although I tether my phone to have WiFi in most places, sometimes the signal just isn't great.
Thanks, guys. I also just noticed that I wrote "table use" in the title. My bad.

I use kingsoft office, it is free and available offline and gives you the ability to create, edit, and view, word, powerpoint, and excel files.

The app that you don't have

Some days ago I opened a topic about the most useful app that you have on your phone, but... Is there an application that you would have on your phone but you haven't found yet?
Yes there is, but I am going to learn to write it and then I will share!
If you have a great idea either make it out find someone who can and share! There is opportunity out there and we need to be bold to grab it!

Omg! That's so funny! You could set a reminder on your phone to remind you to do all of that. All jokes aside, that would be pretty awesome.

Development for Android is done mostly in Java. It is very simple programming language, after a few weeks of practice you should be good at it. Here you have a tutorial on how to create first Application: http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html

The New Boston
The new boston has a 200 video series on android application development. It's a little bit dated but if you go to http://thenewboston.org/index.php. It shows you specifically how to develop for android 2.2 (froyo). that being said most (if not all) of those applications should fun just fine on any OS 2.2 and above.
The main things is that you are using the API level from 2.2 so unless you change it later on you won't be able to use newer features. BUT... it can take someone from 'eeerrr I think this be mah keyburd' to 'Yeah, i just wrote and android app and put it on the market. BYAAAH!!!'.
Definitely worth checking out. I checked it out and when they came out they were cuttign edge pretty much (like a year ago lol).

HA... I just realized that you said ROMS. well that is a completely different story... that is really trial and error until you figure out how everything works.
If you aren't running on ubuntu then download virtual box:
https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads
Once you have that the EASIEST way to get started is to download the ISO for ubuntu 10.04:
http://releases.ubuntu.com/lucid/
Once you have created the Virtual machine with ubuntu 10.04(simply because it is the best for development):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jC6jSiGSbUE
Then I recommend to get your environment setup you follow the instruction at the below site:
http://www.freeyourandroid.com/guide/compile-ics
Now that I actually read what you were askign for and am not a complete tard... hope this helps.
I looked it up and it also gave me a link on how to set up Ubuntu. So my next question is, where do you get source codes? I myself have a vibrant so of course it doesn't get source code updates although I know that some ports are from the gnex

sounds like xda veterans should compile an Android rom "how to for dumb dumbs" e book and put it for sale in the play store and on Amazon self publishing. you'd probably make a fair amount for yourselves and the site, depending on how you went about it; problem is I think all forums on this site would then be totally flooded with repeats, duplicate functions mods, crap roms, and just generally bring the average level of code down to hella-sloppy levels. yikes, pick your poison
I understand that serving requires a lot of time butnim serious about this. Not o my that my friend has an lg lucid and I have other people who would like development for that pho e which I would help with hopefully

roms are also largely in java (or davlik, anyway)
You can start by compiling something like CM10 (not an easy task, I might add).
Most devs begin because there's something they are itching to have but that doesn't exist. Once you've successfully compiled, you can start tweaking these things in.

I had to make the same decision. The prime was my first choice, but imho the note 10.1 is better for school, especially since all our books are in PDF format and needed good annotation features.
Samsung I think is more stable and has better quality control.

Let me explain to you how xda works. There is a "read first, then ask" policy. If you want to be endlessly flamed here, keep asking questions that have already been answered 100 times.
If you REALLY want to be flamed, then insinuate that your time is more valuable than ours and that we should invest in answering your question while you obviously have not.
Read first then ask.

Since you are trying to find a tablet to use at school I'd recommend to buy note 10.1. I'm also a student and I have the same motive than you. I don't own note yet since my operator here in finland doesn't have notes for sale yet. I've been reading these kind threads as mitchellvii told you to do as well. Yet I understand that not everyone has time to read forums expecially if one wants information fast buy note because of its multitasking advantages and the s-pen. Splitscreen is in my opinion the most useful thing to have in a tablet used for studying. There is a lot bigger resolutions on other tablets screens but 1280x800 is enough and even it isn't I'd still buy note because of it's ability to multitask hope this helps!

I would recommend the Galaxy Note 10.1. It IMO is really the most productively designed tablet around due to the multiscreen and the popup windows allowing you to do more things at one time.
As to those that feel they don't have time or that their time is so important that they can't offer a helpful reply, I ask you to please do not waste your time posting a responce to my questions, if you don't desire or have timetime to be helpful. I mean no one is forcing anyone to post answers to any questions.

Sorry but we feel that if a question has already been asked and answered 1000 times a new member should respect the Forum and do some research before asking the same question again. The experienced members who help a lot of people find this very annoying. It is clear from the OP's arrogant response that he made no attempt whatsoever to research prior to asking his question. Why should he do any work when we can do it for him? It's just basic forum etiquette.
Like I said, clueless is cool, lazy is not.
I used my Prime+keyboard dock to take notes all last year for my classes, but it wasn't the most reliable thing ever. I had quite a few random reboots in the middle of class and lost a good deal of notes many times.
The Infinity, as far as I know, has more or less the same issues.

Be nice. We've all made forums blunders at one time or another. He asked the same question on the TF700 forum and they were helpful (albeit one-sided). You're making us look bitter.
OP here's the link to a v-e-r-y long thread comparing the two devices. Shorthand: to get a HDMI-out port, FHD display, and an optional keyboard you're sacrificing quite a lot in compenent and build quality.

I've had the prime and the note, note wins hands down. The stylus is much more useful than the keyboard. The plastic body is actually better for Wi-Fi signal strength. If you need hdmi or usb out you can always buy the adaptor.

I'm bored and my time is free so I'll tell how I came to the Note. I owned every Asus tab with keyboard. My daughter was going back to college so I was gonna let her have my infinity and keyboard. One week before she left the Note launched so we went down to Bestbuy and grabbed the first one and brought it home to try. I never really trusted the Asus because of ANRs and crashes so I didn't feel comfortable letting her take it because I know she would be *****ing about it when something went wrong and believe me with Asus its always something. She used the Note for a couple hours and said it was great so I grabbed it and put it through the paces side by side with my infinity. After about a hour I was boxing up the infinity and on my way to Bestbuy to exchange for a Note of my own. My daughter has told me many times "the Notes the best thing for school hands down" when I ask her how it compares to her iPad2 (charger caught fire burn wall in her apt and got money back) she said they're too different animals. We are both trouble free and happy and the world is a better place..... because she's not complaining

[PROGRAMMING] Learn C, Build a rom

Ever want to learn C? Want to build a rom too?? Well this thread will then be for you! I have combined learning C with building a rom in a small little program that is sent to github and well committed. The best part is, you the learner, will have the ability to submit additions you do to the program with your new C skills and have it published right here in this thread with your name! Cool right?
So first things first, you have to git clone the source
just run the command below
Code:
git clone git://github.com/simonsickle/build_helper.git
Now, learn C and have fun. There are tutorials here that are teaching C here on xda, and this provides real life working WARNING free examples. It shows you how make files work, linking objects with the linker to get one bianary (like the kernel) and how to make code available to other built in files. It also shows you how to use an include/ directory.
if you submit code, please post a patch here with the purpose (for learning purposes) this can be done by running
Code:
diff -rupN unchangedfoldername/ folderwithmychanges/ > mychange.patch
in turn, patches can be applied with
Code:
cd mycodedir/
patch -p1 < /location/of/patch/patchname.patch
Any suggestions are welcome, as well as all discussion. Eventually I want to teach you how to compile this code on the NDK and use a library to build ssh support in so you could ssh to a build server and run the scripts from your phone.
Wow this is a really nice idea, I hear from so many people who want to learn but get overwhelmed. This guides people over that hump. This is what the android community should be all about.

Exactly the point. I want to encourage development as it is a passion in my life! Some guys love playing football, I love creating things from scratch. It is like an art to me, It comes from how i feel, what I want to do. What needs to be changed in the world. Coding can change everything in the world, with a simple language such as C or as complex as ASM. Without programmers, tinkers hackers, and passionate hobbiers where would the human race be? Back in the 50's with the cool cars that ran on led fuel. Now, lets go forward, and innovate with an open source license so no one can litigate
I will take a look at this Thanks.

Most of the low-level programming is similar between Windows/Linux. It's when you get into GUI programming is when things get strange and complicated. But as the OP states, you cannot build Android on Windows. Hint: ( dual boot )

Also I have to ask. I've wanted to develop a graphics focused ROM. Are most of the graphics in a ROM pictures or code (as HTML can make pretty convincing graphics with text)? I'm a graphic designer and want to make a ROM no ones ever seen before. Not just a theme but a totally redesigned UI. Something revolutionary.

[ROM] T217S - Anyone Interested

I've pretty much retired from ROM development, but I recently built a rom based off of StockT217S for personal use. Not much in regards to mods as Xposed handles all of that, but it is fully themed with most stock removed. Darker and more colorful than stock. With Wanams's xposed module, it make for a nice looking fully functionally rom. Just wanted to post this to see if there is any interest. I'll post some screenies this evening. Any sprint users that have run my Goodness series of roms for Evo, Epic Touch, S3, Note2 and Nexus5 know what to expect visually. Thanks to team blackout and gunthermic for some inverted gapps and images as well as others across xda. Lots themed.
Follow the rom HERE or catch us on the Hangout by requesting to be added in the thread HERE.
Love your work and would love to see this rom. Thanks.

Mijj, that would be great! I miss the goodness days on the e4gt, and couldn't of gotten a better offer after hearing this from you. This is the best news I've heard since buying this tab. I I haven't even been using it because of the white framework. I themed the best that could be done with xposed, but it definitely needs finished off. Thanks and it's great to hear from you brother.

Most have been updated to latest and are inverted. Some still need updated. If there are special gapps you want to use just change them out.

I've posted a test zip and some screenshots in the op, give it a run and provide some feedback, lets make this a community thread. Maybe together we can build a cool rom for this tab.

I'm downloading now and report back once I get it flashed. Thanks again Mijjah!
Wow - finally a big name developing for the t217s - you are my hero. I will gladly test on my tab 3 later today! I'm more into aosp builds and whatnot but I dont see that being very likely anytime soon. PM me if you want. Ill be a guinea pig.
Everything installed correctly and this is running great. Does anyone know how to turn on sms on hangouts? I've gone into hangout settings and there isn't the usual turn on sms button.
Downloaded yesterday and so far, running really good. Very nice job sir. Only issues I've run into so far is I still have issues with the camera, video recording skips and jumps, but nothing do with the Rom i don't think, also it goes thru an android update every time reboot, like it's wiping cache every time.

I haven't tried the camera yet, but I don't have the android updating issue. Have you gone back into recovery and tried wiping again?

I dropped the video down to 640 and that seems to have fixed it, just can't use the higher setting
