[Q] SD card - General Questions and Answers

So I've noticed with every media storage that you buy, you don't actually get the full storage advertised i.e. you buy an 8gb sd card/usb stick and only get 7.49 or a 16 gb and get 14.49 or even buying a 32 gb and getting 30 gb, etc, etc. My question is what does all this storage go to and is there a way to access or get the full data storage?

Actually those space are fill by data like, when we connect it to PCB it must be acted as its a storage system.
When we insert it in mobile, few things run between Mobile and sdcard to get mounted and similarlly other things....all these data is stored in that unalloyed place.as the size increase the unallotment space also increases..

So it's a bit like a "bios" for the sd, but not really a bios. So from what I understand from what you guys have said, it stores the data on how it is supposed to act when it comes into contact with different devices and the drivers, etc?

Yes the above is right, but still as I said there is some space for data,to which it has to react when it is connected to different devices...

I genuinly did search google but obviously I googled the wrong things, thanks =D
EDIT: Also, right before I partitioned my sd card it said that 8gb of data had already been used O.O, that article hasn't explained that.

THe files are installed when you mount the sd card into your phone, so you can read the contents of it, and so you can have read/write privellages, same thing when you plug it into your computer.

Hellow, everyone. How much free space can you use to install apps?

The Sensation's ROM is only 1G,and the system partition may eat more than 600M,may be 799M,so is there only less than 300M we can use? That' really bad..I usually install apps more than 600M..I do not want to install apps in sd card, that's terrible!
And may be the 1G is the data partition we can use?
So anyone who is using sensation,Could you tell me how much free space you can use? This is really important for me to choose to buy or not...Thanks

I guess you meant ROM and not RAM
another question (maybe mentioned somewhere else before, therefore sorry if that is the case): is there a way to get more space of the internal storage? as far as I know the Desire HD also has 4GB of ROM and 1GB user accessible (or am I wrong?)..is there a hack to get more space?
The ROM is actually 4GB with 1GB for the end user.

We must partition the NAND agian, and doing that will lose all the data..May be can not turn on agian..
Or developers have other method
DHD actually has 1.14G for user data, but we only can use 0.95G~1.05G...

the first scan after reboot takes time...after that, all scans should take considerably less time...

Yes even I have a 8GB class 4 memory card and it takes abt 2- 3 minutes to scan it.
There are apps that are able to increase the read speed of your sd.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.sdincrease.it&hl=en
Or you can use the app rescan media to disable media scanning at boot to save time.

try getting a better memory card. always go for class 6 or class 10 instead of class 4 in the future.
avoid keeping both zips and extracted forms of the same material.
clean up the memory card.
delete all empty folders
delete all the files in lost.dir folder.
try organizing all your music/videos in proper folders.
thanks for all the response, ill them in mind.
how would i know what class my SDCard belongs to though?

It's usually written inside a circle underneath the manufacturer's logo like in this image

listn yar the thing is after reboot its usual...evn on samsung galaxy s2 it wil take same tym...howevr i suggest u to use mem card xclusively made by samsung....they have quite good speed i think as m using 1...
fact is after 15-20 mins ur phone wil b gud in same situation...
may b i hlpd u....
the card provided by samsung has a capacity of just 2GB.
It takes that much to initialize a 8GB card, because the phone is designed for smaller SDcards. 2Gb is what I've received with my phone. CPU armv6 is slow.
moved from 4GB class 4 to 16GB class 10 and it's only gotten faster....
Then it is all about the card?
yeah i have 32 gb of sd card of sandisk......and it requires 5 mins to read.... 30 gb full !!

The NTFS format SDcard is not able to mounted , but it's still recognized by android. You should be able to format it by the classic way. In the setting menu ,storage ,and there should be the option to format the sdcard.
I once format my sdcard to NTFS format , and my phone directly gave me the message to format the sdcard after boot.
Solved my problem by using AParted app from Play Store..
Unmount sdcard in settings - storage
Then used the app to make 1 partition with maximum storage allowed and made it FAT32 ..

Ext-SD card not playing nice with my m8

Hi all!!! Ok, so I have a 32 gig micro SD card in my m8 but when I try to download something to it let's say a torrent file or album zip it won't download until I switch the designated folder to internal and when I transfer music to my SD card it won't play in any of my music apps. It tells me it "can't play this type of file" It does store my photos very well. I'm just wondering if anyone has had this problem before? Is my Sd card corrupt? Is my Sd card outdated or something?? lol thank you guys

Do you have a link to the kernel thread? It sounds like you are running one that doesn't remove the SD write protection from stock. Without that removed, apps can only access specific folders on the card and they have to be coded within the app to allow it. Think sandboxed mode.
The easiest way I know to check the SD card is connect it to the computer with a card reader. Most likely it will be ExFAT, but 32GB and under can still be FAT32.

If you didn't change the kernel, try that. The write protection is a built in feature of KitKat designed to limit how much of your data an app can access.

[Q] Question about GS6 app partition

What is the size of app partition on GS6? For example on my GS2 it's 2 GB and ofcourse it's not enough.
Welcome to 2015, the old days of separate partitions don't really work the same way as before, so if you buy the 32GB edition you will have about 24GB for all of your stuff (pictures, videos, applications, whatever) .

on a 32GB device it is partitioned into cache, system, data and some low level paritions like bootloader, recovery, modem etc.
on the data partition lies the /data & /sdcard partition wherein sdcard is running as an emulated partition that resides inside the /data parition.
Usually the data parition in a 32gb device is about 24gb so you'll be having about 24gb of storage for your apps and whatever files you put in /sdcard.
So in short they share the same storage space.
Great news Thanks guys.

That's true but I think his question may be what I answered, for system as where the apps are installed vs data of apps are stored. I say this because the S2 is a 16 gb phone with about 12gb usable for storage. He said he had only 2gb so I took that as he wanted to know system storage, as he said "partition" same as you said. No?
