[Q] So now we have root, is unlock up for grasp? - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
Now we have root on locked devices (all creds to Morlok8k, I was wondering if an alternative to the Asus unlock tool is for grasp? I'm not a dev in any sense, but one of the unfortunate RMA-and-unable-to-unlock-bootloader guys.
So what do you guys think? Is it possible? I know Dan Rosenberg did the magic for a couple of Moto devices, and I would eternally grateful if I would be able to custom flash my TF300 which I love so dearly. :fingers-crossed:

Unlikely for JB boot loader and above. Same reason we cannot downgrade back to ICS boot loader.
Might be possible for ICS boot loaders, but not sure a dev is interested enough to put in the work.
Sorry, don't get your hopes up!
Though I like to be surprised too.

Yeah, I know... But we all know the magic that happens on XDA. "Not possible" is simply not part of their vocabulary  I guess we just have to wait and see! I'm sure all those Moto-users didnt' think they would be unlocked at all :victory:
I was pretty sure I wouldn't be rooting my tf300 any time soon and yet, here we are!

There is a thread in the development section where lots of very talented developers pulled apart the ASUS unlocker app to try to do what you propose. Unfortunately, they all came to the same conclusion. It's just not gonna happen. If someone like the guy who unlocked the Motorola bootloaders were to try, there would be a chance, but he's, like, one in a billion.
I would love to see this happen even though I'm already unlocked, just because. But I wouldn't hold my breath.

Unfortunately, I'm not in the US, so I'm out of luck. But there's good news too! I've actually am in touch with Dan Rosenberg at the moment
He asked me through PM what was up with the Asus bootloader. I've send him the following e-mail:
Hey Dan,
Thanks for your reply concerning the Asus unlock bootloader tool. I'm very grateful to get your attention, since you are truely legendary within the scene (and I'm not even a dev myself ) The issue that they have is that all TF300's returning from RMA are not unlockable anymore. I've send mine in for 3 times to have this issue solved (first it returned without SN inserted, next time I couldn't do OTA update / unlock, same goes for it now).
There are numerous threads on XDA where people are complaining that they can't unlock. Any contact with Asus about this is clear: we are not supporting the unlock tool. What the unlock tool does is send the proc ID + SN to the servers of Asus (encrypted) and the unlock code will be returned. So far no one has been able to bypass this in any way (mostly because of the heavy encryption used, people say it "can't be done". But then again, I never thought I would be able to root my locked tablet until your fantastic tool came along.
Thanks for your time, I know there would be a lot of happy people out there to be able to custom rom their tablet.
I hope you can help us out. If there's anything I can do (eg: borrow you my locked tab), I'd be happy to. I know how frustrating this is (including Asus attitude), and if I in some way can help people out, I'd be happy to have my share in it.
Thanks again,
Kind regards
Fingers crossed that he might be up for the challenge! Indeed he's one in a billion.

Got a response from Dan:
I'd be happy to take a look at your bootloader, but I can't make any
promises, since it's entirely possible Asus has implemented the unlock
process in a cryptographically strong way that is impossible to bypass.
Would you be able to pull the boot partition from your device and send
it to me? Let me know if you need instructions on how to do this.
...I tried to use ROMdump to pull the boot partition but was unable to because of permissions. Is there anyone out there with slightly more experience to help me out here?
Already the fact that he's willing to have a look is a big step forward!
:fingers-crossed:

[Q] unlock bootloader or downgrading system under 9.18.79.XT926

I have motorola Razr Maxx HD... recently I updated system to 9.18.79. However, today i saw cyanogenmod 10.2 version roll out and I really want to try 4.3 version since I have been stuck on 4.1 for almost a year. Unfortunately, when I try using motopocalypse to unlock bootloader, it keeps failing. Than I was thinking maybe I can downgrading back to the old version than unlock bootloader but on the website it says DO NOT USE THIS UTILITY ON THE LATEST 4.1.2 OTA UPDATE. I guess 9.18.79 is the newest OTA version. Therefore, I was wondering if there is anyway that i can unlock bootloader under 9.18.79 or downgrade whole system to lower version. So I can install cyanogenmod 10.2
Thank you
You're out of luck, sorry. There's no way to unlock after taking the newest OTA.
I believe that the correct answers to your questions about your recently updated Razr Maxx HD are -- NO, at this time there is no way to unlock the bootloader if you've installed the 9.18.79 update, YES, you can still root your phone. YES, you can downgrade your phone to 9.16.6 (but you still won't be able to unlock your bootloader after doing so). I have a Maxx HD with exactly this set of circumstances. The phone was running 9.18.79 when I got it. After having no luck unlocking the bootloader (as expected) I was able to root it using a method I found in this forum, then installed SafeStrap, then installed a couple of older stock kernel-based custom ROMs. It's certainly not as good as before the update but I'm rooted, all my apps run and I'm rid of all the Verizon bloatware. Not perfect but not bad.

I'm in the same boat, I have one question. Does anyone use the Motorola way to unlock bootloader? I found the website to unlock, wondered why that isn't an option.
It's for developer editions only.

Thanks for answering these questions. Who and how close are they to unlocking it? Do you see it happening soon?

I don't think anyone is working on this. The guy who came up with the exploit to unlock the bootloader in the first place said immediately after releasing it that he isn't touching Motorola devices' bootloaders anymore because they have become so difficult to crack. The update in the 9.16 OTA patched a pretty big security hole in the basic Android framework. That was a good thing because it prevents thieves from hacking your phone (hopefully) but it also took away a lot of our "freedom" with these devices, unfortunately.
Basically the process of finding a way to unlock the bootloaders is extremely difficult and not a rewarding enough venture for anyone to bother with right now. Don't hold your breath for a bootloader unlock anytime soon (likely never). If you've updated to 9.16 (I'm with you here, after replacing a bootloader unlocked, rooted and running CM10.1 phone with a cracked screen through insurance and receiving a replacement with an un-unlockable bootloader out of the box) kiss your ROMing dreams goodbye. The best you can do with the phone now is root it, install SafeStrap and run ROMs based off the stock kernel.
My advice to any and all willing to listen:
Get away from Verizon as fast as you can. They are making sure their phones release now-a-days with un-unlockable bootloaders. The upcoming Droid Ultra, Maxx, and Mini as well as the Moto X will all be locked down with no hope of unlocking their bootloaders on Verizon. The ATT Moto X will also not have an unlockable bootloader.
The best carrier for devs and flash hounds will be T-Mobile from here on out as they are marketing to people with their own devices and not locking down the software the way the big V is.
This really sucks because my favorite thing about my Razr HD Maxx is the battery, and the only thing close to or better as far as battery size/life coming out is the new Droid Maxx. With out being abkle to install a custom ROM, though I feel like I'm using an iPhone. But a good alternative may be an S4 on T-Mobs with an extended battery (thanks to Samsungs removable batteries) or charging case or something like that.
You are a wealth of information, thank you!
Would I be able to install any rom with safestrap? and then I would just be stuck with current kernal? Or does the rom have to be special in some way? I want to get the CyanogenMod 10.3 version. Thoughts? If I can't, what would be the best option as far as stock kernal rom?

I unfortunately upgraded to 9.18.79 a while back and now that i'd like to unlock the bootloader, I can't.
However, I do have best buy insurance, assuming my screen is broken, I can get the device replaced with a refurbished unit. What are the odds the refurbished unit has not been updated to a version that cannot be unlocked?
thanks

The odds are getting slimmer and slimmer as the days go on, but I have still seen a few people get replacements that have not been updated.

Can you "still" unlock the Bootloader on the Maxx

I have been scouring the web trying to figure out how to unlock the boot loader on my droid maxx and I've heard many different ways most by using a guy on Taobao.com to get an unlock code but have been told by many that he is no longer around. What I'm trying to figure out is is there anyway possible to STILL get an unlock code to unlock the NON DEV DROID MAXX?
Please do not answer unless you know for sure that your answer is true as of today.
Also before anyone bashes be for being on 4.4.2, I had no choice my replacement phone came with that software. :/
I really appreciate all the help via forums and community here and thank you for your help ahead of time.

The only problem with that is that that is only for 2014 maxx and not the 2013 I'm trying to gather information on a possibility for all maxx's.
Also at the end of that thread people are saying he's down again as of today.

if you were as fast at reading a few post in the General forum on this exact topic, as you are at posting about it here. you would already know, this has been gone over extensively, by people who know what they are doing. you would also know, that every option suggested has been thoroughly explored and tested. you would also know, that as far as anyone is aware, no one is publicly working on a solution, as this phone is past its prime and most if not all of the people capable of finding an exploit are not willing to spend time finding one.

Oh damn. It's KitKat that's the issue than? I'm out of the loop it seems. I was under the assumption it was the phone itself people couldn't root. It's KitKat that's causing the issue. Okay. Hmm, I wonder if there's any root methods for 4.4.2 yet....

Uh, that's what we've been saying. No, there's not except possibly for a few phones and all those methods have been tried with this and they didn't work as Motorola had already fixed those exploits.
The only way to root this phone under KitKat is to have an unlocked bootloader, and there is NO way to do that anymore, period.
The original unlocking exploit took the Dan a long time to find it and a lot of testing. That exploit is long gone and cannot be put back onto the phone as it was patched into a protected zone of the phone that even unlocked bootloaders do not have access to write to. So, there is NO way to flash back to a previous version of JB that had the exploit and have it "patch" the exploit back in. Yes, you'll go back to JB, but not exploit will be there.
And please understand the frustration from some of us - you're is possibly the 200th time this was asked. If you actually searched the forums and read the postings, you would see there are huge threads about this issue. That's the main reason why so many of us are frustrated with this question because it keeps getting asked and it's sitting right here in other threads and so, the forum is getting polluted with the same question being asked, over and over again. If people would just take the time to research for themselves rather than just jumping in and asking the question, it would make this forum lest polluted. What's funny is, the questions all come from people who have just registered on this forum (they all had posts < 10). It's very frustrating.

just want to know

Hi i am new to the droid community got this fone as a gift from a bufdy of mines, got tonrun it on metro pcs network was really to setup. Anyways i update to ota with out doin no reaseach seems like i am stuck with 4.4.4 my question is there a way to root xt10180 non dev or temp root??? Can someone guide me the rite direction thank u
P.s if this is not the rite place pls move post t.y
Considering there is other sections more appropriate than the "Dev" sections for a question or concern, this would certainly not be the right place to ask.
But to answer your question, no. If your BL(bootloader) is locked, you have OEM/Stock recovery, and are on 4.4.4 you are screwed. It appears the Ultra is no longer being supported by anyone capable of finding a method to root. However, you can PAY for a BL unlock code, but it apparently has not been successful for everyone so I personally havent tried and would not pay the premium and possibly get nothing in return. At 4.4.4, you are unable to downgrade to older versions capable of root. Unless someone releases a method of bypassing the stock restrictions - you may have to wait until the next update. Only problem with that is the day after you update, if you choose to, someone may release a tool or method to bypass those security measures. However, if you dont update immediately you may possibly miss the window of opportunity to use a crack-able version of an OTA and wind up being stuck with too new of a version (I am not 100% sure on this last statement, as its been awhile since I was fully involved in the dev world). Hope this answered your question.
Yeah know I am stuck on this version. N I also won't pay for no bl that's not going to work. If someone do come out with a crack version I am willing to donate. I miss been root man. I hope someone do come out with a way to bypass this restrictions. I know they are a lot of smart ppl out there, that can help us noobs lol.

Not yet and there's nothing definite for us at the moment. There's only a handful of respective Dev's looking into and possibly working on this and if they are able to do anything they need a lot of respect and consideration from us as to THEY'RE the one's putting their time and sweat into OUR freedom of VZW's locked Bootloader. So when able, please give THANKS where it's due.

I am not a dev or an expert but from what I have read, it has been done (repeatedly), it can be done, its already done.
We are waiting for:
1)Someone to release a ready to use program (npjohnson)
2)A donor aboot with CID
- CID is sometimes used as a device ID so I think we need someone willing to give that up or wait for Getex's device to come in

Yes it has been done (repeatedly and only done by Beaups for his purposes only. I was referring to and meant when it is completeted and safe for OUR use if it's published. I know what's needed but that's to achieve unlocking the bootloader but there's more that GeTex wanted to be sure of when the BL was unlocked.
Wow this seems awesome and it seems that it would be easy enough to use i mean he says he released the code on github. Now it would just be using that to get unlocked bootloader and then now were not stuck on touchwiz.
Bootloaders are being unlocked if your cid starts with 15 if it starts with 11 no dice
