[Q] Light Orange v7 problems - General Questions and Answers

I should start by saying I'm not a developer and not even an Android 'power user'. In fact I'm a complete novice at Android, being on my first-ever smartphone, though I am an electronics engineer with other hardware and software skills.
My Galaxy Gio started freezing on some apps recently, and a factory reset (recommended by Samsung support) made it worse. So, faced with sending it to Samsung, I thought: "Why not give Light Orange a try first, since there's nothing to lose (if it doesn't work, I'll still have to return the phone to Samsung)." I've been unhappy with this phone's speed for a long time (overloaded with apps!), so I'd been wanting to try LO but I couldn't make a backup of the original Samsung ROM and was afraid I might stuff the phone.
LO (build v7) worked (with a new SD card, which was the main problem in the first place, but the stupid Samsung Android OS doesn't tell you that the SD card is not working!), so I'm persisting with it to see if it will fill my needs. It's generally looking OK, but I have one major issue and a number of minor ones. I'm hoping someone here can help with some or all of them. Sorry about the long post - if you don't have time to read it all, I'd appreciate your reading at least to the major issue (point 1) to see if you can help...
1. The major issue is that mobile data doesn't work! In 'Mobile network settings' I have 'Use packet data' and 'Data roaming' both ticked. But if I'm away from home (and thus out of my wi-fi range) I can't get an Internet connection ('No network connection'). In the 'Mobile networks' setting screen, I tap 'Network operators' and it finds my provider, Optus (amongst others). I tap that (or the 'Automatic' selection) and it says 'Registered on network', but I still can't connect. Is there some obscure setting I'm missing? This problem is obviously critical to my overall use of the phone.
2. Given that there is no instruction manual or on-line tutorial (that I could find), and with a number of settings unclear what they actually do, I thought 'Settings/About phone/System tutorial' might contain some help. But it just hangs (Force Close dialogue appears eventually).
3. In Navigon (GPS navigation), the volume buttons say 'Media volume' and the bargraph changes, but they don't change Navigon's spoken directions volume! They did in the Samsung ROM. Maybe it's 'System volume' or one of the others that the buttons should control in this app?
4. Swiping between Home screens, the current screen number is not displayed (unlike in the Samsung ROM). So especially with the nondescript default wallpaper, it's hard to be sure which screen I'm on (until I've populated each with apps!).
5. There are only 5 Home screens in LO (vs 7 for the Samsung ROM). Is this ever likely to be fixed, or must I restrict the number of apps directly accessible via icons?
6. Some of the colour combinations provide poor legibility. For example, in Contacts the person's name is displayed in white on light-grey, which is hard to read! And the tick-box tick colour (in various setup menus) is too low contrast (hard to see if ticked or not). Light green and middle grey are almost the same brightness, and difficult for my old eyes to distinguish.
7. I can't find a way to add name-text for widgets in the notification drop-down (and the function of some is not obvious, to me at least). The Samsung ROM had text under each icon.
8. When I initially searched for a custom ROM (months ago), it was because my phone was bogging down due to insufficient 'internal storage' (whatever that is - EEPROM??). I was lead to believe that most custom ROMs fix this problem by providing 'virtual internal storage' on the SD card. But LO doesn't seem to do this, to allow 'unlimited' apps installations. My storage is again approaching a critical low level. Can anything be done about this?
9. Having changed the home page wallpaper to a photo from the Gallery, how would I change it back to the Light Orange 'default' (if I ever wanted to)?
10. Because the in-built clock doesn't seem to have an analogue display option, I've installed a third-party analogue clock. Is it OK to uninstall the in-built clock app (using Titanium Backup Pro, which can remove system apps), or will this 'break' the lock screen (which displays a digital clock)? Are there any other 'system' apps I should *not* remove (particularly: 'Navigation', since I have Navigon, and 'Music' since it doesn't plays FLACS and I thus use TTpod)?
PS: On the positive side, I'm pleased that the File Explorer has much of the capabilities of ES File Explorer, obviating the need for me to reinstall that!
If you've read this far - many thanks! I hope someone can help with some of these issues. I'm trying to like Light Orange!
Rgds, Daniel

Problem #1 solved!
I've solved the #1 problem (no mobile data connection)...
It occurred to me today that maybe by installing Light Orange, which presumably effectively 'unlocks' the phone from my current contracted provider (Optus), this somehow changes something that Optus detects(?), and blocks me. But before ringing Optus to discuss this issue, I Googled for other people with a similar problem.
Sure enough, it's not uncommon when people unlock their phones, and the recommended solution seems to be the free app 'Tweakker', which I installed. And sure enough, on my second attempt at selecting the right Optus plan, I had a mobile data connection!
So I'm now a lot happier with Light Orange, and will probably stick with it. But I'd still like someone (preferably the dev) to look at some of my other (less critical) issues. Unfortunately I'm not yet allowed to post to the Light Orange development thread.

Some questions from a relative newbie...

Hello from a relative newbie to this forum, with an O2 XDA Orbit 2. I’ve a few things I wanted to tweak on my handset, and have found some answers on here, but not others. Here goes with my ‘shopping list’: -
1. Despite what try to do to keep the input method as ‘keyboard’, it has always reset to ‘touch keyboard’ when I have switched the phone off and then powered up again.
2. Can someone give me a simple to understand list of instructions to cure the annoying fact that when you come to unlock the device, the screen brightness is so low that you can’t see the buttons you need to tap to unlock! (on a previous device I had, when you tapped the first of the two buttons you needed to tap in sequence to unlock the device, the screen brightness increased)
3. I have managed to change some of the programs I have on the TouchCube, but can’t find where the pictures/icons are that I want to use to represent the new programs I’ve put on it (in particular, I’m referring to Memory Map, the GPS application using OS maps).
4. How do I point the email button on the TouchCube to link directly to the inbox for my O2 email web mail account, which I can already get to through Start> Messaging> O2 UK?
5. How do I find where the photos I take on my camera are going? (I haven’t changed any of the ‘save location’ settings, but the photos I can’t seem to find any of the photos I’ve taken, nor do they appear on the ‘camera album’).
6. Is there any way of using the device to listen to BBC radio stations streamed over the internet?
Sorry if I’m asking questions that have already been answered in other threads, and thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

Can use SPB Mobile Online for this, has TV, Radio and more. Google it, I don't know the link by memory. Downside is that it costs $30. But it is easy and avalible to get for free.. (torrents).
-Bobby
1. SipChange 1.0 (you will have to use search to find it...free download somewhere on XDA forums, sorry I don't know the link)
2. agreed, upgrading to 6.1 fixes problem but, if you haven't upgraded yet then read through everything I will type below before you do anything:
This is the fix I found for non-Polaris...
\HKCU\ControlPanel\BackLight\LockLevel\
Change LockLevel to what ever value you want the backlight set to when your device is locked.
It didn't stick on my Polaris, found a thread talking about installing BrightLock.cab (created as a Kaiser tweak) to fix this issue. Turns out that may cause a different backlight issue (screen timeout sets itself to 7-10 seconds).
Fix was to rename locklevel folder to xLockLevel and reset. After soft-reset the LockLevel folder is back, along with the original that I renamed to xLockLevel. But now the screen returns to full brightness for about 7 seconds when locked AND it stays On for the duration of the settings>system>power>advanced tab>"on battery power: turn off device if not used for" backlight timer is set for when un-locked.
3. Can't help, haven't messed with it myself.
4. \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\HTC\Biotouch\CustAPLauncher\App0\parameter
was -service "ActiveSync"
change to
-service "DesiredAccountName" (DesiredAccountName= whatever the name of YOUR account is for instance "Yorkshire Yellow" - include the quote marks around your "account name")
5. my documents/my pictures is where the photo samples that came with my phone are located
also try looking (just to make sure) they aren't on your storage card, try...
storage card/dcim
or
storage card/my documents/my pictures
6. I'm in the US...I use the http://www.thestreamcenter.com/pda/
and
http://www.radioshows.mobi/ to find radio station streams.
The Stream Center has a UK link http://www.radiofeeds.co.uk/pda/ that I've never used but just tried by typing BBC into the search box and got a bunch of results.
Radio Shows.mobi has a BBC link on their home page.
Good luck!

OFFICIAL Verizon MR2 ROM Problem / Fix Thread

First - MODs, can we please sticky this thread.
Second - This thread is for others, like me, that are using the stock VZW MR2 ROM and would like to have one place to look for all fixes to all the little issues with it.
The official problem list will be listed in Posts 2 - 5.
Discussions are welcome of course. If I have missed an issue, please bring it up. Likewise if you know of a confirmed solution, please post about it and I will update Posts 2 - 5 as necessary.
This is NOT for anybody using a custom ROM (including Mr.X's fixed ROM)
Please take discussions about issues with those ROMs to the appropriate thread.
Remember, this is for actual fixes.. not statements like CHT fixes this ot Mr.X's ROM fixes that, etc..

Have to dial twice?
Is anybody else having this problem? I upgraded to VzW MR2. Now after I dial a number and hit send, the number just disappears and the call doesn't connect. It usually works on the second try, though. Same thing on the first press of a contact or a speed dial - nothing - but a second press works.
It is not a sensitivity issue. The device is registering my press, just nothing happens (or in the case of dialing a number, it erases).
I tried uninstalling things, then hard-reset. It appeared to work better for a while, but then started acting up again.
Any help?

DISREGARD -- this is apparently not an MR2 bug, but rather a result of incompatibility of chevy's vzw fix to saumaun's caller's city/state on dialer.
Bully Dawg said:
could it be a registry setting -- maybe in the phone canvas settings? it only occurs in dialing and nothing else. i don't have any dialer mods (except saumaun's area code on dialer + chevy's vzw fix).

Problem with Arizona Time Zone after MR2 upgrade
Since upgrading to MR2 my phone changes from Arizona to Mountain time zone every time it reboots and connects to a cell tower (time zone remains on Arizona if I reboot in "Airplane" mode). Time zone also changes at some times when I drive betwen cities (or cell towers??). Arizona is an 'offical' time zone. I applied the Microsoft DST update to no avail. I have verified that the weather update registry values match another post also. Any help would be appreciated! Verizon support claims its an HTC/Microsoft problem and will not address it.
Problem: Google Maps no longer integrated with Contacts
Before applying hte MR2 update you could show directions to an address in your contacts with just one click. Google Maps is no longer included in the MR2 update, and even after I installed it thre is no link to show google map directions to an address viewed in the contacts/People listing. Is ther a cab to restore that functionality?

Check in SETTINGS > DATA SERVICES -> INTERNET TIME SYNC and make sure GET TIME FROM INTERNET is checked.
That is all I can think of.

Not that I am aware of
I can't say that this is an MR2 problem but here goes anyway. I keep my phone in a horizontal holder on my belt. When a call comes in it starts to ring. I pull it out of the holster and turn it to portrait. While I turning it switched to a landscape screen and then eventually back to the portrait screen. It's slow so by the time it's done I miss my call sometimes. I have read things about going in to the G-Sensor settings and switching off auto-rotate but I don't have a G-Sensor settings under the HTC menu. I can't believe I am the only one running in to this but yet I have searched and searched and found nothing similar. I know it can be turned off because when I tried a custom ROM it was off but unfortunately, any custom ROM I've tried, and I've tried a lot, always left me with problems that I couldn't live with. Great that they work from some but just not for me.

I have not experienced that, but I use a vertical holster.
I got a comment elsewhere that said it's the magnetic case and that I need to get a velcro one. So, I ordered the velcro one and will see how it works out. I could swear with the custom ROM it didn't do this but if the case magnet is causing it to think the keyboard is being opened then it makes all the sense in the world.

HTC Sensation: Possible solution of "phone doesn't sleep" and "power button" problem

HTC Sensation: Possible solution of "phone doesn't sleep" and "power button" problem
Hi every body,
I was getting irritated and extremely fed up of basically two problems of my htc sensation:
1- The phone didn't automatically turn the screen off. The screen would remain ON and wouldn't automatically lock itself. For example, i use the phone and then i will place it at a side expecting that first screen will be dimmed and then phone will automatically lock itself. It wasn't happening since a very long time (I don't remember the beginning of problem), even when screen timeout setting was enabled. I also observed that if at one time i set the brightness level of display to be automatic, next time i check it and brightness level was always set to be at maximum level.
2- When i pressed the power button to lock the phone, the phone often doesn't go dark. It went dark for a second and then became ON again. I had to press it a number of times until it goes dark. Similarly when i wanted to unlock the phone, i had to press the power button multiple number of times, until it gets unlocked.
Basically i was trying to solve the 1st problem. I went into settings -> applications -> manage application. I checked for each installed application whether it has following in the permissions:
System tools: prevent phone from sleeping
Following applications had above mentioned permission, so i removed them:
xda
ebay
mobile voip
daily motion
sports tracker
Calorie Counter - MyFitnessPal
imdb
Photo Editor
speedtest.net
whatsapp
yahoo messenger
Surprisingly after removing those apps, both issues 1 & 2 were totally gone. The phone was automatically locking it self (it still is). So for me problem number 1 is totally gone now.
However, regarding second problem, i tested it like 100 times locking and unlocking the screen by pressing power button. The behavior was absolutely normal. Then i checked the brightness level of phone, it was set to maximum, i set it to automatic. As soon as i set the brightness level to be automatic, the 2nd problem somehow reappeared.
Now if i set the brightness level manually, the 2nd issue doesnt reappear, but when i set the brightness level to be automatic, power button issues reappears.
Sorry for such a long post but I hope may be this post helps someone, also i would like to ask the experts the justification of such behavior of phone.
I am using stock rom and android version 2.3.4, sense version 3.0 and software number 1.50.206.1
This definitely needs a bump!
I was thinking of possible solutions as well, but this one makes sense. Maybe it is a flaw in how that permission is handled? I don't know how to program, but if any of you clever rom hackers are around, maybe you can try tweaking this? I was thinking that it was maybe something to do with the hardware button itself, sending off multiple signals to the phone telling it to lock and unlock right after due to the shoddy power button design.
My main issue with the fix in the original post is that I use a lot of apps that require this permission, and apps are kinda what define how useful your phone is (aside from making phone calls, that is). If there was a way to fix this issue by either tweaking the "prevent phone from sleeping" permission, or maybe just trying to add an input delay that doesn't register any power button presses until half a second has passed or something.
Like I said, I don't know what is possible to tweak with android since I don't know how to program so I might just be talking out of my butt, however, I do like this phone, it just has this one major power button flaw that really annoys me!
#2 doesn't occur in ICS Roms. I'm always on auto brightness.
Some ROMS added some apps may let your phone awake automatically when you close the screen,so it is the right way to move some apps. Using ARHD ICS and Insection ICS ROMS ,#1#2problems never happend.
Basically i would like to stick to original stock rom. I know i can avoid these problems if i use custom roms.
@Tekuno
Let me tell you, i didn't delete all of those apps which were using that permission "prevent system from sleeping". I only deleted those which i mentioned in my 1st post. Among those, i installed "yahoo messenger" again and 1st problem started happening again. I removed that app, problem gone. For me it's the case of hit and trial. I can't definitely point out one specific app which cause the problems.
I think there is really a flaw in the way this permission is handled by operating system of the phone.
I would also like to keep with the stock rom if possible. I figured it would only be a few apps that would be causing the lock screen issues, I am currently too lazy to go through all of the apps and figure out which ones are causing it.
I'll wait patiently for the ICS and Sense 3.6 update and see if that helps.
i have both problems too. About no 2, i always tot it happens after using the stock camera app which forces the brightness to go maximum and sometimes after exiting, there is some bug that doesnt return setting to automatic. Just a hunch but not sure :s
Do you have "Extended quick settings" installed ? and on a custom ROM, if so then i guess you need to check the "Screen On" option in the extended quick settings dropdown window.
You must have accidentally pressed it and activated it instead.

[Q] LG-Lollipop 5.0.2- HOW DO I STOP the GPSs atempts to share location with Google?

I really fudged up here.
I took this new phone which had a notification about an update. Thinking it is like Windows where I must have the newest updates for proper security practices- I agreed for the update.
Turns out it has become a Lollipop device now, which wouldn't be much of a problem except that the owner who has no Google account and want to stay away from them as much as possible, sharing as little info as possible- Now gets a popup every time she turns on the GPS, asking her to share her location with Google( "use Google location services"). She keeps hitting 'Decline', but other than being annoying, the demand is obviously destined to be accidentally accepted one day.
The settings of the GPS are "device sensors only" and when you hit decline it works normally.
I've spent the entire day looking for a solution and I'm fairly desperate. I am not allowed to install any 3rd party GPS app on the phone nor can I revert to the previous version if it involves me downloading some file from the internet (not from an official source) and trying to flash the device (I'm inexperienced and afraid to brick the device as well).
Please, can anyone help?!?!?!
PS. funnily enough the popup has a "decline" button, an "accept" button, and a "don't ask me again" tick box- however when you choose the tick box- the "Decline" button disappears (turns grey).
P.S.S- I just want to add that it goes without saying about a root being out of the question.
P.S.S.S I just want to make clear that
up?

Fighting the power! (management)

Is it just me or this phone (or at least the CN RMX2071 roms) are super aggressive in closing apps? I know it's a general theme with "custom" (non aosp) based ROMs and most vendor UI takes, but it feels really really broken in these phones.
I have to keep the phone in "high performance" mode and even then i have to re-run some apps every other day (Nova launcher's google companion app) and even re-add widgets (Google Calendar) for them to continue to function, presumably because the power management system keeps shutting them down.
I have every single app to OFF in the App Freeze screen, every app is allowed to run in background (not the smart option, plain always-let-this-run option) and allowed to launch other apps (otherwise more things are broken) and it still feels like things are quirky due to how aggressive the power management is.
Am i missing something? are there more options that i missed? is it better in the EU/IN ROMs?
The eu rom fixes this problem
So a trade off of functionality vs latest security patches etc. Might be worth a try of switching over and at least trying it for a short little bit to determine.
Does anyone know if there's a differnce in behavior for Android Auto between CN and EU ROMs? (though i imagine its also related to power management at the least)
[DELETED]
I am on EU ROM here in the UK (A.28) and ever since I got this phone. It loves to close apps in the background. Facebook used 1400mah when it was just running in the background. Disabled it running in background, notifications work but now it only uses 234mah roughly. There system is messed up. Other apps that I like to use in the background include Google Clock and Skip Track Settings.
These I have a Tasker to launch both apps, with a little pause between launch. I have "Exclude from recent apps" enabled and then after they've launched. I get it to go home automatically. Then with my usage, I have this task running on boot, 5am (whilst I'm asleep) and on secondary app open. I don't notice it, other than when it boots and you just gotta let it run. My clock then works 100% of the time for my alarms and works all day.
One thing to note is, if you click "clear all" in recents, you have to run the task (I do this with the secondary app) to reopen the apps. Thankfyully, with Tasker with auto start-up enabled, it just works and is obviously in realme's don't close in background list.
Thankfully, with Android 11, a promising change to the rules for OEMs is that they can't have list of preferable apps and have to give all app developers an equal chance to running and not being killed. So hopefully, with Android 11, realme will have to stop this annoying practise.
Hope I've explained that well enough and you can use Tasker as a bootleg option
- Josh
Are you saying the power issues are still prevalent in the EU rom as well? If i got you right, You have some kind of a Tasker config to keep launching all the apps that the OS kills on various stages? Because i don't see how that would exclude them from being killed/blocked by the Realme UI service. Again, Unless there IS a difference in the EU rom.
In my case, I gave up on using Google Clock because the alarms never trigger and Android Auto is insanely hard to get running because it keeps killing SOME part of it or one of the apps im trying to use in Auto (Waze, Maps, Youtube Music, etc)

Yes, apps that realme likes to kill in the background. I have them opened by Tasker whilst I'm sleeping and on boot as realme doesn't close Tasker in the background and then the apps work fine all day. I don't notice it open them other than on boot as otherwise my phone is in standby.
Alarms never triggered for me as realme killed Google Clock, that's why now when it just opens in the background as I sleep it isn't killed.
I don't use my phone intensely and because Tasker opens them as apps, realme can't close them because they're still technically open, even though they don't show in recents. That's why when you clear all apps in recents, you need to then reopen them (that's what my secondary Tasker app does).
As for Android Auto, I haven't had any issue with it. When I use it, my car isn't technical so it uses the screen. I plug my phone in, turn the car engine on and phone begins to charge. Then with a bluetooth to FM adapter, my phone auto connects to bluetooth, and as soon as my phone connects, Android Auto automatically opens (as I have it enabled in Auto's settings) and I get it to play music automatically.
For someone using the actual plug in display to the car, I don't know. Android Auto came pre-installed and all I had to do was install the version for "phone screens".
If you need help with Tasker, my insta is below. Feel free to reply to this or message me on there.
Hope this helps

It does help, Thanks!

Due to a similar issue I had in my corporate Outlook e-mail app, I searched for a solution for the error I got there like "Your organization has removed its data associated with this app" and I found an article from Microsoft proposing a resolution (url not include in this post because it is not allowed, however it is quite easy to find it).
I followed that resolution proposed and it worked for Google Clock app. The alarm finally rang this morning!
Basically, you should go to app list, choose Google Clock (or even any clock app) and configure it as follows:
-in "Power Saver", choose ""Run in Background"
-Set "Allow Notifications" to on
-Set "Auto Startup" to on
-Set "Allow other Apps or Services to Launch" to on
Hope it helps
Yeah, I pretty much did that to every single app on the phone (Besides "Auto Startup" where the OS only allows you 5 outside the whitelisted apps it knows like whatsapp, discord, etc) and i still had interminent issues here and there. Thanks for the heads up either way!

I also enabled all of these settings (other than last one, can't find it) and had some days it worked, some days it didn't. So for the sake of my actual work, I used my Tasker method and works 100% of the time. Ultimately, realme kinda screwed us over. Ultimately, Android 11 should fix this with it's new guidelines so let's just work around it in the mean time.
Yeah, I'm yet to try your Tasker method, i definitely will though, it's basically the last ditch effort here. I just finished switching to the EU rom as well.

On Startup Manager, for me on EU ROM A.30, and since I first got the phone. The limit on Startup Manager was and still is 20 not recommended startup apps. This is, in realme's words, "to ensure the hone will run smoothly", like bollocks. My old phone had 3GB of RAM and has the exact same apps and ran fine (other than only allowing 3 backgrounds apps to run before memory ran out). But with 8GB and SD865, it's just their way of saying, oh look we have this amount of screen on time. Judging by the list on A.30, the Google Clock is now recommended (I don't think it was before). Either way, realme is gonna get shunned with Android 11's new guidelines and it'll be a fair playing field.

Yeah, EU rom (A.20 as its the only one compatible with the chinese model right now) seems to have saner behavior, 20 startup apps instead of 5 and i don't think it has that "allow others to launch" option at all, so not blocking it even? We'll know soon. App Freeze doesn't seem to be automatically enabling on apps, either, also good.
Google Clock worked for me this morning (i duplicated the "system" clock alarms, just a couple mins later to be sure something triggers)
I'll check Android Auto today as well.
I AM always on High Performance mode though.
The thing is about Android 11's changes, that they seem to be worded a little on the easy side in the Google language - makes it seem to me that Google is just asking the vendors to be a little clearer on what they do when informing the users, not that they absolutely can't kill background apps. Here's hoping though.

I keep my settings to standard and never do high performance stuff. I also use 60hz as although I love 90hz, I also love battery life and it isn't enough for me to justify the battery usage.
Yeah, I dropped down to normal and had no issues so far, without tasker of anything, just the EU A.20 ROM.
I am on 90Hz all the time though - As someone who is used to 144Hz monitors and gaming, i can sorely tell the difference between 60 and 90 and to me the battery life difference is somewhat negligible.
I haven't tried Android Auto, but we'll see soon enough. Android 11 also brings wireless Auto to everyone, so that might help there as well.
