Didnt Unmount SD card before removing, all pics are gone! Please help - General Questions and Answers

I have posted a similar thread in android discussion but i was centered around Android apps to recover data, now im desperate for anything.
So a bout a week and a half ago, I was having trouble playing a movie over DLNA so I took my SD (Sandisk 64gb) card out of my phone and put it in an android tablet that I am able to connect to the TV via HDMI. Movie played fine and then I took it out of that tablet and put it back in my phone and went about my business using the phone again taking photos etc. Then about 2 weeks ago I was asked to send over a photo I had taken a few weeks ago. So I went in to look for it. all my photos were gone. everything else is still on the SD card but the photos.
I have tried recuva and photorec which has only recovered about 25-26 photos, and the photos are in a very small subset, it doesn't contain my most recent photos or my oldest but ones in the middle sort of. Any help is greatly appreciated. I am hoping that my photos are not gone for good since the photos that were recovered were in the middle section. I am considering the test disk partition recovery but I also dont know if that will do anything either, since I dont know if I "lost a partition". It seems most of these recovery programs are designed for "deleted" files, but I didn't delete these files, I dont know what removing without unmounting them did to it and why it only affected my photos.
Any advice is greatly appreciated

[Q] \sdcard failure

I was using the internal 13gb storage to back up pics from my camera on a trip and all of a sudden it just shows gibberish file names and that u have 13.13gb free of 13.13gb. I tried restarting it, no difference although it did appear to show a few more files. Any ideas? I'd be pretty bummed if i just lost my pics.
seems to show more gibberish files now, but none have any more than 0 bytes... any advice on if it would be possible to recover the drive or anything?
Greetings.
I may have read you wrong but you did say "back up my pics from my camera" which sounds as if they are still on the camera? No sweat if that's so, copy them from the camera to your pc/mac or where ever else would appear to be a safer storage alternative. Then its a simple matter to get them burned to dvd/cd or printed at your local store.
If you meant you copied to the sdcard then deleted the originals from the camera you may still have a chance to resurrect them. If you can mount your cameras storage via USB then find yourself an "unerase" type of program and get them all back that way.
Just a word of advice: Since we are all modding the tablets, which in and of itself is a semi-risky, albeit fun, thing to be doing then do not count on anything being permanently on our tablet if it has any value to you. (we are all in a way beta testers)
I hope my ramblings help you.
Regards,
Fuzzy
Any and all ramblings are appreciated. I took some pics in vegas, filled the 2gb microsd card and dumped those onto the tablets internal storage, then took more pics in california and am now out of luck as far as recovering from the microsd card goes i think. Anyone beg to differ? I haven't really looked into recovery options there.
I'm hoping there is a way to get a direct image of the internal memory and then maybe I could run some utilities meant to recover files, though I am probably out of luck. It was handy wading through the pics on the tablet and uploading them straight to facebook after backing them up to it, though the quality isn't quite as nice of course as the original files. I've only had the thing about a month, so I figured I was safe as far as using it for backing up off my camera on my trip. Lesson learned I guess, grab some $10 sd cards instead of using microsd with an adapter and backing up to the tablet.
Hello,
Super noob here, so I'm in no way trying to offer advice. Just thought I'd share my experience.
Couple of weeks ago I had the gtab attached to my PC to copy some files. After I disconnected I opened the sdcard and basically found the same thing you are experiencing, nothing but a bunch of garbage files.
I think this happened because I pulled the plug too soon when disconnecting. You tap to 'deactivate usb transfer', then you get a series of messages about preparing SD card and such. I think you have to be careful to wait until it's done, which only takes a few seconds.
Unfortunately I can't offer any help about recovering the photos but I can tell you how I fixed my internal sdcard storage.
I simply re-ran the partitioning routine in clockwork mod and it took care of the corruption. The internal storage is fine now.
Sorry I can't offer help on recovering the files, hopefully something comes along.

I was able to recover lost pics from a corrupt external harddrive, using a free program called Recuva. I believe Piriform makes it. Just a thought

yes that sounds perfect, now if only i knew how to get a direct 1:1 dump of the internal memory...
dd would work I think. You'd need root and a big enough USB or uSD to hold the image

awesome man, finally something i can google
i've got a usb hard drive i can connect that is plenty big, not sure if there is a max size limit though...
the only info on dd command i can find is linux specific but i'm assuming it is the same. http://www.brighthub.com/computing/linux/articles/38387.aspx?p=2
"The command used to clone an entire drive would look like this:
dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb"
so sda is source and sdb is where to, so probably replace those with sdcard and sdcard2 or whatever the usb drive would be called.
This site says how to get command line access to my tablet, saying i need the sdk to get adb. http://gailly.net/android/android-tips.html
I can't really try it out til I get home, but my hopes are up. If anyone has tips or wants to say this post is completely wrong I'd much appreciate it.
From the little Droid tinkering I have done it'd be
dd if=/dev/block/mmc???
The input is the SD block device and partition not sure the exact thus the? ??
of=/path/to/mounted/drive

[Resolved] [Q] TMo Vibrant Bionix-V prob, no sd files, sort of

I need help, if this is the wrong place to post this then please send me a link to where I need to be.
Just updated to Bionix-V from stock JI6 using Clockwork Mod. I went by the instructions on their site and all was well... then I noticed that my sdcard was empty, kinda. It only showed one file (named: "Caution!") no matter which filer I used including Root Explorer. However, all my files and folders are still there! I can see them on my pc! The phone's internal settings show that my card is almost full (about 14GB out of 16GB, external, I hardly use the internal sdcard). Also, in the gallery, it shows all my photos from the external sdcard, yet I don't see them in the file system! Errrg. By the way, the real "coup de grace" here is that the "Caution!" folder contains the naughty pics.... Yeah I laughed too
I read somewhere that someone had a problem with double pics in the gallery, and the fix was deleting two data db or something files from the root. Hoping it's that easy.
And yes, I tried reformatting my sdcard and putting it all back on, and did a stock Odin3 (w/partition) and back to Bionix-V, no help.
Please, help me. Thank you all.
Like all tech things in life, as soon as I give up and ask for help, I figure it out.
The filers all had a home setting, I always had it set to the sdcard root (i.e. /sd),
it was set to /sd/caution! even though it was IN the caution! folder it acted like it was outside of it. I reset the home again to the sdcard root, which was /sd, now it is /external_sd. Gotta love the tiny differences that make all the difference in the world. Still not sure why it decided to only show my naughty folder...
Thank you all, I know no one got a chance to reply yet, but I'm sure you'd have all helped!!!

Messed up sensation?

Okay so I've just gone through my second (32gb micro sd card) where I would sync my music from google music beta and tracks would have errors and not be able to play. When I copy that specific track (there's multiple of them) the whole file is zerod out. Also when taking pictures with the stock camera some pictures can't be opened after taking them and give an error symbol. The exact same thing with the file being nothing.
I'm wondering now if it isn't the sd card that I have but the sensation is some how corrupting data? I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to try and solve this or if this is better to just return it for a new sensation (i'm within my 30day). I never really played around with the 8gb card because I swapped it out really quickly.
Any suggestions would be great to try before I go and try and return it.

tablet no longer seeing media on sdcard

As the title says...
for some reason my p3110 has stopped seeing photos and mp3s on the physical sd card...
can browse to the directory of mp3s and play them and quickpic sees photos fine(just not stck app)... If I move mp3s to internal tabs sees them just for some damned reason not on sdcard!!!
Have reformated the card and tried another card and still no joy...
on stock rom rooted and modified with agni kernel...
worked fine till yesterday.

About 6 months after I bought mine GT-P3113, it stopped reading the SD card (PNY) for no apparent reason, not just photos or music, any files. I could still read the card on my PC (Windows Vista). I backed up the files and reformatted the SD card (32 GB). The Tab 2.0 would not read that card even after reformatting. I copied the files to a new disk (Sandisk), and haven't had problems in over two years. I never modified the Stock ROM however. I recall reading complaints of spontaneous SD cards problems with Samsung products. My wife has a Galaxy Tab 3, and I have had a Galaxy S3 phone for around 2 years without any SD card problems. What I did learn from the experience was to back up the Tablet/Phone periodically. I do so about every month.
The only thing I can think of for the music and photos problem is that the apps need to "refresh" somehow.

I found this solution. Practical if it is discovering a new directory, not if you need to do it for every new file.
How to refresh the gallery in Android
Posted on December 22, 2012
I was facing a problem on my Samsung Galaxy S2 where the gallery was not showing the photos that were present in a certain folder. While trying to share some pics on Whatsapp I realized if Gallery cannot see them, you cannot share them. Well now I had to figure out what can be done.
While searching the net I found out the following steps to work properly for me.
Go to settings – apps – gallery
Clear cache, clear data, force close
Go to settings – apps – media storage
Clear cache, clear data, force close
Hard reset (cold boot) this will not delete any data
Next time you open Gallery it may not contain anything, but give it a minute while the system is still scanning the device & you will find that only the folders you want to be visible, are visible.
This has been quoted directly from this site
Props to janner43 for his solution / trick.
If you are not comfortable (or do not understand the steps) you might want to consult someone who knows more about Android or the reseller from whom you got your phone. I am not responsible in anyway if your device starts acting weird. Use at your own risk.
I have had problems with photos too. I discovered that if I create new folders on the sdcard and copy the photos into the new folders I can see them. I know that it seems too easy but it has worked for me several times.

[Q] Desperate for help after deleting pics

I have a rooted Galaxy S3. One week ago I was in my picture gallery and accidentally deleted a whole folder of 1,300 pics thinking it was one picture (so stupid of me I could kick myself). I have a sd card but was unaware it was almost full and I am assuming it was saving to internal memory. Have several folders in gallery and the main two were labeled camera (has 700 pics and still on phone) and the other was the one with 1,300. Since they are of my kids I am desperate to get them back. I have checked google+ (sync was off, again really dumb, I know). I have been consumed with trying to figure this out but haven't had luck finding any straight answers that are credible. I have tried diskdigger pro but the only files found are the 700 from the sd card. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Thanks for response, but I have tried recuva. The problem when I connect with pc is it doesn't find phone as a drive, just the sd card.
Have you tried "disk digger" app it seems to be a good one among the pro's.

Was it on the SD card or on the internal card?
If on the SD, take out the SD from your phone and plug it into a computer (may need a converter), then use a program like easeus data recovery (you can get it for free one way it another) to restore the data.
Good luck! I can't even imagine having that happen.
