tablet no longer seeing media on sdcard - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

As the title says...
for some reason my p3110 has stopped seeing photos and mp3s on the physical sd card...
can browse to the directory of mp3s and play them and quickpic sees photos fine(just not stck app)... If I move mp3s to internal tabs sees them just for some damned reason not on sdcard!!!
Have reformated the card and tried another card and still no joy...
on stock rom rooted and modified with agni kernel...
worked fine till yesterday.

About 6 months after I bought mine GT-P3113, it stopped reading the SD card (PNY) for no apparent reason, not just photos or music, any files. I could still read the card on my PC (Windows Vista). I backed up the files and reformatted the SD card (32 GB). The Tab 2.0 would not read that card even after reformatting. I copied the files to a new disk (Sandisk), and haven't had problems in over two years. I never modified the Stock ROM however. I recall reading complaints of spontaneous SD cards problems with Samsung products. My wife has a Galaxy Tab 3, and I have had a Galaxy S3 phone for around 2 years without any SD card problems. What I did learn from the experience was to back up the Tablet/Phone periodically. I do so about every month.
The only thing I can think of for the music and photos problem is that the apps need to "refresh" somehow.

I ALWAYS do back ups..All of my devices auto back up twice a week..
I agree with the refresh issue... But seem's no way to do it...Tried a few appsa on market but none work.

I found this solution. Practical if it is discovering a new directory, not if you need to do it for every new file.
How to refresh the gallery in Android
Posted on December 22, 2012
I was facing a problem on my Samsung Galaxy S2 where the gallery was not showing the photos that were present in a certain folder. While trying to share some pics on Whatsapp I realized if Gallery cannot see them, you cannot share them. Well now I had to figure out what can be done.
While searching the net I found out the following steps to work properly for me.
Go to settings – apps – gallery
Clear cache, clear data, force close
Go to settings – apps – media storage
Clear cache, clear data, force close
Hard reset (cold boot) this will not delete any data
Next time you open Gallery it may not contain anything, but give it a minute while the system is still scanning the device & you will find that only the folders you want to be visible, are visible.
This has been quoted directly from this site
Props to janner43 for his solution / trick.
If you are not comfortable (or do not understand the steps) you might want to consult someone who knows more about Android or the reseller from whom you got your phone. I am not responsible in anyway if your device starts acting weird. Use at your own risk.

I have had problems with photos too. I discovered that if I create new folders on the sdcard and copy the photos into the new folders I can see them. I know that it seems too easy but it has worked for me several times.

weird situation with my SD-card and file-encryption

Hi,
I seem to have some weird things going on with my SD-card.
First everything worked fine, but then suddenly all my files seemed to have disappeared.
When I took a look in my "memory" (start, settings, system, memory) there was no change
in memory-usage (still there was 1360 Mb in use and 566 Mb of free memory.)
In "File Explorer" no files were to be seen at all...
When I took out my SD-card an put it into a USB-card reader, my pc showed only a file called EncFiltLog.menc
So I can't copy the files to my pc as well...
I'm using this card for over 8 months now without any problems untill this...
My encryption function in my Jasjar is turned off, I've never had it turned on actually...
The first weird thing I noticed was the question whether I'd like my jasjar to search the card for music files, while I always had this card in my PDA. I never had this question before. The EncFiltLog. menc is created just before I discovered my files disappeared.
(We were just trying to play some music, but the storage card was nowhere to be seen in my media player, so I took the SD card out and put it back in)
The reason why I didn't pay attention to that question and answered "no" was that my old Qtek S100 also does it all the time without giving me any problems at all and this Jasjar already had the files on my card in his library...
After that my files seem to have gone...
Does anyone has a solution for this?
For me, there are some really valuable items on the card which I rather not loose.
(I know I should make back-ups, but these files were too recent to make one...)
Thanks in advance,
JT
Same problem
As of yesterday, I have the EXACT same problem as described above. I could use some of the famous XDA wisdom...please.
What Roms are you two using? And SD Storage settings?
Same problem
Samsung SCH-I760
Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional
CE OS 5.2.19202 (Build 19202.1.0.0)
ARM920T S3C2442 Processor
SanDisk 2GB Micro SD
File Encryption is turned off (unchecked)
The SD card has functioned perfectly for almost a year. Yesterday I noticed that about half of the folders stored on the card had disappeared. Of course, I have tried reinserting the card, soft resetting the device, restoring the device to an earier date, etc...no luck.
The card shows 1.8 GB of memory "in use." However, only about 500 MB of that information is accessible or even visible. When I insert the card into my desktop computer, the mysterious "EncFiltLog.menc" appears.
Also note that flashed the 6.1 ROM upgrade to my device a few weeks ago. Since that time, I have installed/uninstalled several programs and reset the device numerous times. All data on the card was accessible until this week.
The menc file is dated 08/03/2008. The only software change that I recall performing around this date was enabling the "Scheduled Backup" feature on Spb Backup.
Your help is appreciated.

same problem here. it appears out of nowhere and after googling, i found out that it's because of windows 6.1 encryption thing. problem is, i dont have the box ticked at all. and whenever a menc file gets created, my phone will ask me if i want to format the card to make it readable and cant scanned the card. after deleting the EncFiltLog only the SDMMC will appear again
any solution with this problem?
For as far as I know: nope
nothing....
I have discovered the same problem with my Samsung Omnia i900. Any soultions yet to the EncFiltLog.menc problem?

There appears to be two scenario's here, and none of them you are going to like.
If some of your files appear with .menc extension (and all your files are there), this means they have been encrypted by WM6. The only way to recover them is with the original device that wrote them.
Please note the following:
if you hard-reset or flash your device you will lose your original code, and all files will become unreadable.
there is no way (as of yet) to find out the encryption code, or back it up
If you only have EncFiltLog.menc file on your SD card, and all your other files are missing, it is extremely likely that you have had file corruption on your SD card and your files have been erased.
Please note the following:
EncFiltLog.menc is a red-herring, it usually exists on all SD cards (a system file, even if you're not using encryption)
You may find a good program to recover your lost files. Do this soon, and don't use the SD card before doing this.
I wouldn't rely on this SD card in the future for anything important.
I hope this helps. NB, I have found some good recovery programs for jpeg files if you're interested. Sorry to be bearer of bad news.
*** Always back up your files to your PC using ActiveSync... frequently ***
(if you have encoded your files, then you MUST use ActiveSync)
Thanks for the update.
This problem mostly happens if you flash your device with sd card inserted.
Try to go back to the prevous rom and I think the content of your sd card will be available again.
Actually, its a new card and all I did was insert it into the phone, then into my computer. I didn't flash anything.
lost a important video of my dead child (menc encoded)
My 8 years girl is dead 6 months ago from leucemia after a 6 years battle. We found our brother in law as now a menc video on is phone. It is one of very few video we have from her where we could ear her talk, so this is important for my wife se could recover it to be able to help her pass with the death.
Since this brother in law did not know how to see the file before talking to us he tried to reset the phone. The file is on his sd card and today we went to telus to transfer the menc files on my pc but the young technician to the sales departement did not know how to read the file. He tried with the vlc but the menc files cannot be read with vlc. And the phone cannot read the file any more. I have a copy of the file. Do you know how to debug this kind of file

I'm sorry to hear that.
Put the video in the same device where it was encoded and transfer to the PC using ActiveSync.
Please note, this video cannot be decoded on other device!

tried to watch my pictures and saw anything ... zero.
Just my pictures are away... music and other files are there.
Than i notice that i have a new file on my card 3.4.2009 6:56h on this time that i used this.
How can i get this jpg pictures back ? i have some in the cache, but in the pcm (what the hell is that!!!!!??) file.
Its possible to transform a pcm to a JPEG ?
need help thanks for answer
may be unknown virus
I am sure there is a virus in your system. i had also same problem but there was a 'new folder'(created every time i formatted my memory card) with the same named file.Tried antivirus but could not clean system.i used another computer and problem solved.
Everything deleted except the EncFiltLog.menc file
k, today I also got me. The complete SD-Card was erased, only the fuggin EncFiltLog.menc remained, giggling at its devious work.
I'm using a Loox N560 with newplowe's WM 6.1 20755 ver.063.07 ROM, encryption unchecked form the beginning.
The SD-Card was working fine all the time, until I put into the cardreader of my laptop (I've done that a millions times before with that SD-Card and that ROM). Unfortunately I couldn't recover any files form the SD-Card. Music, navigation software can be restored, but my older backups as well as my *.cab collection is gone.

I know this is a little old thread but I am new here
I just got my 1st windows mobile phone ever the Touch Pro 2. I have had an 8 gig card in my old phone working for a year no problems. I had pictures and video and a bunch of music. I stuck the card in my new phone and didn't think it recognized the card at all. Me being new to all this windows mobile didn't know to go to file explorer and arrow down to memory card so I took the card out out everything on my work computer and was going to try to format the card in the phone. Somehow I put everything back on my card came home and went to put everything on my desktop and I was going to format the card from my pc and that is when I noticed everything was gone on my card also. I had the one file and nothing else.
I didn't have much important stuff on mine but a couple pictures and a video which I can reget but it still upsets me I lost a whole folder of pictures that I don't know if I have on my pc or not. So I formatted the card in my PC and started over. I now have some music a picture and one video as a test. I notice that file is still there is it suppose to be there? The menc or whatever it is. I hope i don't lose my stuff again but I guess I'll back it up this time. The music is always on my pc so I don't care about that but the pics and video mattered.

[Q] Can't access "My Photos" - via Gallery - on my microSD card anymore; HELP!

[Q] Can't access "My Photos" - via Gallery - on my microSD card anymore; HELP!
I don't know WHAT I may have done, but a few weeks ago, I updated my Droid 1's ROM to one of Bugless Beast's variants... and in the process, must have forgotten how to reselect my Gallery settings to recognize My Photos directory on the SC Card. I only get one folder with a bunch of logos in it, and that's it.
I can access all files and folders on my SD Card, and can even open each desired image - one-at-a-time in most file managers, but - try as I can, I can't seem to recall how to get Gallery to "see" the others on the SD card.
I even moved everything from the SD Card to my computer's hard drive (some 9 GB of files...) and did a format of the card - thinking it needed a wicked cleaning. Moved everything back, and - business as before... as in: "no luck". Still can't access any of the photo or movie files within Gallery.
...any takers??
Try as I might, I can't seem to find ANY location of a cache or data reference to Gallery. I used to be able to simply view ALL file folders that contained images... and now, it seems to be limited to a select few that have nothing to do with the "My Photos" folder or its respective sub folders. I wiped the cache and data on the device a good half dozen times prior to installing the latest Bugless Beast ROM V0.5, and yet - I still can't get it to "see" any of the desired image files on the microSD card. I even wiped all data on the card, formating it, and reinstalled all of the files. Still, no luck.
As an added bit of frustration, I attempted other ROMS, and had similar issues. Wasn't like this before I installed the latest 2.2...!
UPDATE... What's more, I also used to be able to select one of my sound files on my MicroSD card, and make it my ringtone, as well as assign similar audio files as alerts, etc. Now - I can't.
As my kids often text... "WTFIGO...?!?"
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to comment here, in this venue - so it might assist others, as well as post me - directly, to: [email protected]
Thank you for your kind assistance with this matter.
UPDATE STATUS REPORT:
After many attempts at trying different ROMS (Miui... VERY buggy; ShadowROM, Liquid Frozen Yogurt) I STILL had the same results - where only a few images still showed up in my Gallery (when I knew that NOT to be the case) and none of my audio files would save as ringtones, regardless of what I tried... I opted to go to "plan B" and to remove all files, reformat and reinstall the data to the 16 GB MicroSD card, resulting in the very same as before. VERY upsetting as noted earlier.
As I happened to have an extra 2 GB microSD card kicking around, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try to copy from my desktop - a few images of various kinds, as well as some audio files, and copy them into similarly desired and titled folders on the 2 GB card... then install same directly into the Droid 1.
Well, problem SOLVED. It was the ol' 16 GB microSD card. For future reference, it is marked as follows: "MicroSD HC C2 16 GB C16G Japan". I got this for my Samsung Omnia... a few years ago. I guess they really DO wear out after a while! Shame that. At least it's figured out! Thanks for listening to my rant...

[Q] Massive SD Card corruption, causes? *it could happen to you!*

I don't know what caused it.. any thoughts? Has this happened to you? Two nights ago, I recorded a 3.5GB 720p video using my phone, after that, I had issues using the camera app / gallery / ES file manager.. Also my battery life started to tank (later discovered it was the 'media' process constantly at 30% cpu), plus lots of random resets. So I *safely removed* my SD card, my phone went back to normal. If it was broken before I had taken that video, I don't think the camera app would have worked.. stock camera app buffer overflow ? Even the dates of some of those files are way wrong, some were even in future 2017 (hey look I invented time travel).
BACKUP YOUR STUFF NOW! I have instant dropbox backup of pictures, and it managed to backup a picture just moments before the video, and fortunately, the video was also ok (it didn't finish backup yet)... But tons of my existing pictures were trashed. Fortunately nothing outside of DCIM was broken.. but it could happen to you!!!
Hopefully this is not possible to the internal storage, would suck to lose files. Even stuff that is backed up, still a PITA.

Oh, i didn't word that very well. I unmounted and safely removed the card from my Phone at that point, but it was too late. The corrupt files were preventing apps from reading the DCIM folder.

Hmm... It is a lexar 32GB class 6 card. For digital cameras I normally use Patriot LX class 10's, but this was on sale... Perhaps your on to something.
Something I just thought, is perhaps the 'media' process choked on the 3.5GB file, started using tons of CPU and me opening the gallery app caused one of the reboots (while the SD card was still buffering), and that is what caused the SD card to corrupt?
There is some discussion here with similar 'media' process hanging on corrupted files: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1922230

Music on an SD Card (or lack thereof)

OK I've got a bit of a problem here. I have a d2vzw running CM 10.1.3 and run all of my music off of a 64gb sd card formatted for FAT32. It's becoming almost a daily occurrence that for whatever reason, Apollo (or any other music app) fails to immediately recognize that there is music stored on the card. The time it takes for the list to populate ranges from 5 minutes to never, and occasionally includes tagging multiple songs as "Unknown." I've never been able to produce a LOGCAT for this either. Plugging the phone into my computer however, will show all files present in explorer. I'm really starting to get sick of this as I bought the S3 to solve the problem of having to carry both an iPod and a smart phone. Any one know any potential reasons?

I can say that I've used 10.1.2 without any issues. I stopped using Apollo a while ago and switched over to PowerAmp which allows you to choose "select" folders that the player will ONLY scan. This prevents ringtones, downloaded voicemails, etc, from appearing in your library.
Yes poweramp is the way to go... Love it..

Power amp and player pro both allow you to select certain folders, I like the later as its a little less cluttered than power amp in my decision

It could be any number of things. First try another music player, if that doesn't work flash a touchwiz ROM. If that doesn't work either then it either has to be your phone or your card. This happened to me like a month ago in my case it was the phone.

Are you using the sandisk 64gb card? If so that might be the problem. My sandisk card lasted about 8 months before becoming locked (couldn't format, copy or remove files anymore). Within that 8 months my card would randomly become unreadable and would have to be reformatted. The 64gb sd card from samsung has been working great for me. The amazon page for the sandisk card says this "Reformat into file system other than exFAT may cause instability". Anyways you might just have to get another sd card.

[Q] Desperate for help after deleting pics

I have a rooted Galaxy S3. One week ago I was in my picture gallery and accidentally deleted a whole folder of 1,300 pics thinking it was one picture (so stupid of me I could kick myself). I have a sd card but was unaware it was almost full and I am assuming it was saving to internal memory. Have several folders in gallery and the main two were labeled camera (has 700 pics and still on phone) and the other was the one with 1,300. Since they are of my kids I am desperate to get them back. I have checked google+ (sync was off, again really dumb, I know). I have been consumed with trying to figure this out but haven't had luck finding any straight answers that are credible. I have tried diskdigger pro but the only files found are the 700 from the sd card. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

Was it on the SD card or on the internal card?
If on the SD, take out the SD from your phone and plug it into a computer (may need a converter), then use a program like easeus data recovery (you can get it for free one way it another) to restore the data.
Good luck! I can't even imagine having that happen.
