Join this quest for a high-end compact Android smartphone - Galaxy S 4 General

Over the last few years, Android has taken the smartphone world by storm, climbing to the top spot in just about every major market out there. The Google platform offers a mix of features that can't be matched by any of its competitors and is offered on hardware so diverse that it has covered almost every conceivable market segment.
However, with recent trends in flagship droids, we feel there's a substantial group of users that is being ignored. As Android top dogs all choose huge screens for their high-end offerings, those looking to experience the most capable hardware in a mid-sized smartphones are left out in the dry. Despite the large number of companies committed to the Android cause, there's not a single manufacturer to come up with a handset to match the raw power and display brilliance of the Samsung Galaxy S4, HTC One or Sony Xperia Z in a shell that's as easy to pocket as, say, the Apple iPhone 5.
Now, that's not to say that Apple's approach is better than those of its Android counterparts or that large smartphones are in any way bad. The market performance of all those flagships speaks loud enough and there are a number of reasons why super capable hardware makes more sense on larger displays.
However, we firmly believe there is a huge number of people who would gladly trade screen estate for portability as long as that doesn't involve further compromises. As things currently stand, replacing your large Android flagship with a mid-size phone will mean you have to live with a chipset of less than half the processing power and a display with quality and density way below the high-end standard.
Here are what we believe will be the most important boxes that such a device needs to check.
Footprint and profile similar to Motorola RAZR i or Apple iPhone 5
A 4.2" display of at least 720p resolution (1080p would be an overkill on this size)
Top-of-the line chipset (Snapdragon 600, Exynos 5 Octa, Tegra 4)
Adequate camera
That's definitely not too much to ask as using current technology it's perfectly possible to create such a smartphone. We are certain that a large part of the reason why manufacturers haven't invested enough effort in the development of such smartphones is the false assumption that there's not enough demand for it.
That's why we've started an online petition, which we hope will help convince large Android OEMs to pay proper attention to the mid-size market segment. If you share our dream of seeing a properly powered mid-size Android smartphone with all the bangs and whistles of the aforementioned flagships, you can help our cause by following this link and signing our online petition.
If it gains traction, we'll make sure to share it with all our manufacturer contacts and draw as much attention to it as possible. Not even the best performing companies out there can afford to ignore requests singed by thousands of people, so you if you feel as strongly about this issue as we do, we urge you to make your voice heard!
Sign the petition

My girlfriend would appreciate this.

I slept after reading paragraph 2.one word for you :BORING!! just tell me, if online petitions worked, OEMS like Samsung would have released proper source code with their exynos chip set. HTC would have stopped all their crap. Motorola would have allowed bootloader unlocking for their consumer device. All these are useless. The people who frequent this site are too small user base. OEMS wouldn't give a damn as long as they make big bucks.

My personal opinion and i just wanna share it (not flaming)
personally i think the issue is not the screens lets say you wrote this in the right (S4) is the same size as S3 and still better bigger and faster in all ways, why would they make smaller one's ? i think no company will go above 5" now since it seems the MAX size for a reasonable phone, honestly large screens make the surfing experience alot nicer and enjoying if you want a phone for calls only get a nokia or an iphone its way small to be browsing a webpage such as XDA isnt even comfortable at all.
a big screen is an advantage, it doesn't hurt your eyes and even people with sight problems are able to ready anything without zooming and reading word by word instead of sentences... its the idea not of portability but usage and performance i can say behalf of many android users our phones aren't for business men its for music, internet, games, fun , hangouts and social communications
a small phone as the S3 Mini was a start for you guys but come on try and see which is better which actually makes you feel relaxed using a phone bigger screen for the need of a small one just in some cases!

4.0 inch

its all about Android phone manufacturers: Start making mid-size smartphones with high-end specs. :good:

Seems good. I think 4.2" to 4.5" is the perfect size for a smartphone. Here are some dream specs.
4.5" 1366x768 SAmoled display (348 ppi)
Quad core Snapdragon 800 @ 2GHz
13 MP Camera equivalent to S4
16/32/64GB of storage with MicroSD up to 64 GB
2800mAh Battery
2GB RAM
If there was a nice looking phone with such specs, I'll get one in a heartbeat
I fully believe that an edge to edge 4.5" display can be squeezed into the frame of the RAZR i ( 122.5 x 60.9 x 8.3 mm).

This will not be successful. @OP, you're talking about slowing down innovation. 1080p screens have already been released, A15 processors as well and there already are plans to move to more efficient, more powerful chipsets in the future. And then comes screen real estate... many of us can't go back to 4.3 inch, not to mention smaller screen. Personally I won't consider a phone smaller than 4.7 inch. I understand where you coming from and it is your opinion (shared by many) but it will be hard to ask OEMs to go back to smaller screens. They will tell you that they have good mid range phones that should suit your needs. Actually now that I think of it, since phones are getting more powerful with bigger screens, most mid range phones will be 720p with good SoCs. That should do it for you guys.

As stated in the petition, I am one of the people who like smaller screen devices due to portability and usability issues.
I am truly disappointed that smartphones have become more and more hard to use with a single hand and that I almost need a purse to carry around such a phone.
I do not want to wear a purse.
Please stop pressuring men to wear purses!

Please stop posting non S4 items in this forum!
No one gives a crap what size screen you prefer. Post it somewhere else.

The Ultimate Phone

In light of the controversy over Nexus S I thought I would see what everyone else thought a phone branded Nexus should be. Before anyone gets to crazy, here are the guide lines:
1) who builds it
2) nothing that is not produced or not going to be produced: aka- "Star Wars in true 3D holograms and a transporter from Star Trek" talk about things that DO exsist like 10 megapixel cameras with flash, accepts 32g class 10 cards, front facing camera, roms, android version, etc.
3)Why
4)Try to explain why there is not this device
That's it, build your Nexus fantasy, and question why we can't have it!
My Dream Nexus
Okay, well I have been thinking about this for a while now, what I would like in a phone, not necessarily a Nexus, and this is what I have come up with. Please understand that I haven't used an Android phone (although I am getting a Galaxy S for Christmas, have found them cheap on eBay from people giving them up for Nexus S' ) so some of this may be irrelevant.
1) Well, to be honest, I don't care who makes it, as long as it is reliable and sturdy. I love the design of the HTC 1 (concept by Andrew Kim, Google it, I can't post links or pictures unfortunately), and it seems to fit HTC's recent designs, so I may as well go with HTC, having played with a Desire and Wildfire, I can't fault the quality.
2) In my mind, I can't see much technology that could be incorporated into a new device that isn't out currently. I think an 8MP camera (large sensor size of course) is about as much as most people will need. A choice of 32/64 GB internal storage seems reasonable, with the option of using a MicroSDHC card up to 32GB. As for processors, I would probably choose that tri-core processor I heard about a while ago (can't remember it's name for the life of me) that had 2 multimedia/powerful cores and one lower clocked core for other tasks, paired with 1GB of RAM, allowing for the future, because with all of this, hopefully it would be at the top for a long time. A screen size of about 4 inches seems perfect, having used an iPod Touch and tested out a Galaxy S and a HD2, preferably with SuperAMOLED(2?). A front facing camera (1.3mp), and all the current sensors would be included. As for connectivity, Wireless N is standard, but you could get this phone in several versions, a HSPA+ version, LTE or WiMAX, to cater for your network of choice, and at a stretch, combine them all into one to have a mega-worldwide phone . Now, the biggest improvement area: batteries. I would definitely have a large capacity battery, at least 1500ma, but possibly even using new technology to make it last longer, such as using Tobacco Mosaic Virus to boost battery life 10x (I read this on Gizmodo today). Thats about all I can think of for hardware, with all of that, you really need decent software, and that's where the fun really begins.
Software is a tricky area in my mind for the Nexus line, being more of a developer type of phone, it should be easy to root and customise everything, installing new ROMs should be painless, and safe, with no risk, similar in a way to an iOS jailbreak (just hit restore in iTunes etc). But, as Andrew Kim mentioned when he did his HTC 1 concept, hardware and software need to be unified. This is where a Nexus could excell, being a Google phone and running stock Android. But to do that, I think the UI needs to become more consistent, much more consistent. Go and look at the HTC 1 concept now on the Design Fabulous website/blog, and find the messaging app mockup. It uses similar shades of grey and black to the phone itself, making it appear seemless, and even beautiful. Yes this would mean giving Android a completely different look, like going from WM6.x to WP7. And remove those buttons, for crying out loud, you have a beautiful touchscreen just there, it should be used! Have 2 buttons, a Home and Menu, integrate the Back option into the UI like in iOS, search could be accessed by holding down/double tapping Home and then the Menu key could be used for the next major shift.
(EDIT: Can't post images, sorry, but please search Google Images for 'windows phone 7 app associated press' and it should be the first image there)
Yes, this is a picture of an app in WP7, but that's not the point. I tried out WP7 the other day, and I found it a refreshing way of using a device. It looked good and was consistent. But I am drifting off, the Menu key. Look at the picture above, look to the left, and see the categories. Imagine that as all the app's options/menu, like pressing the Menu key currently does, as well as anything else. You could swipe through the different screens to get to it (using the screen, like I went on about before), or, similar to getting back to the first page of apps on iOS, press the Menu key to zoom back there. Simple and elegant in my opinion. Implement a similar look and feel across the whole system, and you have some mighty fine software indeed, but for those who wouldn't like it, with the option of installing one of the many ROMs available without any risk.
3) Why? Well, we are a consumer society, with many phones getting replaced in a year or less, and sometimes just being thrown out, we waste so many materials. By providing solid, useful and top of the line hardware, the need to upgrade becomes less as it would take longer to become outdated. I believe software is the key to a platform, and I am not alone in thinking that. That is where the real innovation comes from, so with a standardised Nexus there could be so much innovation coming from users such as the people here at XDA. Most of the hardware is probably available today, if not in the near future, so it is more an evolutionary step, but I will say that the tri-core processor is for more battery life and more power when needed, and the RAM allowing for better multitasking and futureproofing. And I would just love to own a phone looking like the HTC 1 concept, it is awesome and many friends I have shown it to think the same (they aren't techies either).
4) Why can't we have it? Well, I don't actually know why. The only things I can think of which probably isn't in production are: a) the tri-core processor, but dual-cores are in production now or in the next few weeks I imagine, b) SuperAMOLED(2?), mainly because it's Samsung's tech and this would be built by HTC and c) the multiple connectivity radio with HSPA+, LTE and WiMAX probably isn't being developed as of now, maybe not for another year until these networks become more common.
It is the software side of things which puzzles me, but I'm sure it is coming. Someone just has to take this idea with them, and go for gold. I would like to do that personally, but I need to learn how to code better, a lot better. (I joined XDA for inspiration ) I think this UI would work well, and be powerful, elegant and simple at the same time, helping to bring Android into the public as being easy to use and better than Apple's offerings (a tough task, but I would like to think it possible, note I am not an Android fanboy, neither do I hate Apple, but change is good).
Wow, that is a lot of writing... I hope this is acceptable, I would love to have a device like this myself, I think it would be possible in the next 6 months maybe? I am curious to see what others would like, bring on more ideas!

plainly put there is n never will be any ultimate phone since whatever u buy now is obsolete in 2 months.

I'm sorry, but I think you may have misunderstood the point about no Star Trek stuff. Reasonable fantasies would probably be a better way of thinking of it, maybe something you could get within the next few years. Yes, phones will be obsolete within months of release, but as I mentioned in my post, I think software is the real contender in the future, so once you have a decent specced phone, the software can do the rest.
I'm personally interested in what people want from a phone which isn't out already. So if you think this isn't productive, you don't have to read it. I think some good stuff could come out of here, and you never know, Google or HTC could be listening
1) built by samsung
2)3.8" super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 1024x720 for a true HD display and 329 PPI(pixels per inch). a 1.2Ghz dual-core orion processor, Nvidia GPU,samsungs own NFC chip included in the nexus S, 2.3 Gingerbread ,10MP continual Auto-focus camera that can record at 720p, maximum microSD card is 32GB class 6, 16GB on-board storage, unlocked bootloader for easy loading of ROM's,1.3MP front facing camera, hardware camera shutter button, contour display, choice of stock 2.3 launcher or Touchwiz 3.0 launcher.
3) because why shouldnt we have tech this awesome , and if you think about it , most laptops would e obsolete if this were true , along with point and shoot cameras
4)Cost, cost of manufacture , cost of retail, too much R&D would be needed , to many other products would become obsolete, this to would need to be released quickly , or have 3.0 loaded onto it when it becomes readily available.

Great post, I agree with most of what you have to say, but I feel wp7 is behind in ui. Take that home screen that just plainly wastes 1/3 of the screen. Sure, android phones could loose those buttons, but I still think it's a step ahead of the competition. The slick ui concept http://phandroid.com/2010/10/25/slick-ui-promising-look-at-an-android-home-screen-replacement-app/ may be a step towards that htc 1 concept (WOW, btw, had not seen that- http://designfabulous.blogspot.com/2010/07/htc-1.html) that we will get soon. Seems people just don't like the idea of those permanent screen buttons. I am coming around myself.

I have to agree the homescreen doesn't make total use of the space, but I guess it helps make it look less cluttered, however that is personal. What I meant about WP7 was the different approach to apps, specifically the side scrolling nature of everything.
I love watching the reactions of people who look at the HTC 1 concept, every single person I have shown it to so far has just kinda said either I want one now or wow... Rather interesting to see
As for the buttons, I am undecided personally. I can see the use of having more, but I am starting to like simpler, less cluttered looks myself. I guess in that respect the Galaxy S International is half ground, having one hard button and two capacitive, which you don't really notice too much if they're not lit up.
1. Does not matter, until it is high quality and not cheap plastic.
2.
- [at least] 4" sAMOLED display (or even IPS) with standard 480x800 resolution
Buttons should be:
- Camera and power on the right side
- Volume on the left side
- Menu, back, home buttons under the screen (preferably touch buttons)
- The latest Tegra2 dual-core CPU what performs at 2GHz max, and the best mobile 3d acceleration too
- High capacity but thin battery (1600mAh)
- 12Mp camera on the back, at least 3.2Mp camera on front (or something like the Adam, a rotate-able camera ontop) with dual xenon-led flash (and of course separate control, so they can be used separately)
- Projector on top part of the phone
- 1024MB RAM, 1024MB ROM(formatted for 512-512MB), dedicated 256MB SWAP, internal 16/32GB memcard, support for SDXC cards (capacity up to 2048GB)
- Bluetooth 3.0, USB 3.0, NFC, WLAN b/g/n, DLNA support, 4G support, USB Host functions
- Android OS of course, bumped with a nice slick UI, made by real designers, not some manufacturer (actually, Samsung is pretty good in these stuffs)
- Open system (no secure bootloader, etc) if you want it
3. Why? Because as a dev phone, developers needs the BEST device to test. If the stuff runs OK on the best, it should run properly on all other. Of course, device spec fragmentation is huge, we can't make all manufacturers to use the same CPU, motherboard, radio part, etc. That's where WinPhone7 failed great.
And also, let's provide something for the money they ask for a "smart phone". My current ZTE Blade knows a lot more than the HTC Legend, but costs half or even third of the money (here in Hungary a Legend costs around 90.000HUF, what is approx. 400-500$. The Blade, while it has more cocoa in it, costs around 200$). That's not right!
4. Why can't we have it?
That's easy. Manufacturers want people to buy their new phone when it comes out. Even if it costs a lot. They won't make an "Ultimate Phone", because then after everyone bought his/her own one, there would be no need of new stocks, and done. This way, they always keep up the interest for a slightly new phone (like Nexus S, a dumber Galaxy S, with Gingerbread), just to earn the highest profit with the lowest cost involved. The manufacturer who makes the "Ultimate Phone" would get rich at first sight, then until something more Ultimate is released, they just don't have income. See what I mean? Manufacturers use the first, big boom to earn back all the money they spent for "improvements" while selling almost the same phones. Just like Samsung as I said, or Nokia (N97 and N97 Mini, N8 and E7), or Sony Ericsson (X10, X10 pro; X10 mini, X10 mini pro; Vivaz, Satio, Vivaz Pro). Slight improvements, huge incomes.

That's definitely a solid reason, and as much as we/consumers don't like it, the big companies will undoubtedly keep doing the same, just to stay in business. Still, I can see it being half possible if a manufacturer like made half-ground or something

[Q] What would you like to see most in next gen WP7 devices

Wp7 devices have been reasonable but obviously missing a few things, i feel i have had to settle for 2nd best. dont get me wrong, the OS is great but hardware wise i feel a little bit cheated, so ive already decided, my next WP7 phone will have something a little extra and completely fulfill my demands next time. what is the thing you want most in the next gen wp7/8 device??? any other suggestions welcome but im starting with 5.
How can YOU decide what your next WP7 will have before they've even been announced? For all we know, there will be no future hardware upgrades, as the OS is running flawlessly on the current technology. Sure, in theory it would be nice to have more memory, a better CPU, a better GPU , etc. But if WP7 doesn't like it, Manufacturers will never release it.
Should be more along the lines of what people would LIKE to see in future devices.
simple. if the next gen of wp7 dosnt have any of these features. i wont be buying a new one.
Honestly, I want parity with the highest end Android phone...JUST for the sake of specs. The OS is smooth enough, so it certainly doesn't REQUIRE so much horsepower...but Android-loving friends will always boast about the specs...
Anyways, hardware-wise, a dual-core Qualcomm SoC, with a high-quality 8 megapixel camera, FHD recording, a YELLOW flash (and I don't care about front-facing camera, but it would be nice to get a more than 1MP camera on the front as well), and physical buttons are a must. Right now I have the LG Optimus 7, so I would expect the same industrial design or better in a next-gen phone. And anything under 32GB storage is unacceptable. 1GB RAM would be nice too for when you want 10-20 tabs open ( I use metro browser ). I have tried 5 WP7 phones, each for about a week, and I can subjectively say the size of the screen on the Optimus 7 is near ideal. I want a 100mm (3.94 in) IPS screen on my next phone...
OK, I am done ranting. Oh wait, a price under $500 is also appreciated, since I tend to NOT get contracts.
And Microsoft, seriously, I live like 2 hours away from your campus in Washington, but in Canada. The world is NOT just USA. Bing features, as well as other localized features should be available in Canada at the same time as US. I can understand Zune Pass (CRTC...those bastards), but anything else is INEXCUSABLE!!!
I would expect WP8 to have all of the above as minimum system requirements.
I would want CDMA carriers (Verizon mainly) to have Window Phone 7 models before any new models come out. I want one but, I am getting sick of waiting just to get good coverage on a phone.
Maybe S-AMOLED Plus (that acronym needs an acronym).
4g, that is the one feature I definitely want on the next generation WP devices. I am in no rush for dual cores just because I know that Microsoft will probably provide good drivers enough to make it even more fluid. I really don't care about the other things (more storage would be nice though).

From reading this section of the forums I thought Android was something you throw on a cheap, why are you complaining about the cost?
Apple is going multi core, so Microsoft has no choice but to introduce multi core phones this year if they want to continue this.
Also looks like FFC is now the standard on the major players devices.
1080 recording should be on the list too.
Everything else I want is mainly software related.

I would gladly take a phone without a FFC. If I wanted to video chat someone, I would tell them to use a computer.
1080p is only on dual core and as long as the quality is good.
A better UI interface!
How about a port to connect to my Zune docking stations? Could probably replace the microUSB.

MS should buy Nokia out, and start making their own phones(ZuneHD like)
high end phones all the way!
-Dual core processor: Cool but probably unnecessary considering how well optimized WP7 is on a single core 1Ghz.
-Better GPU: Would love to see more powerful GPUs in the future. Xbox Live Games need it to beat out iOS and the next PSP! If Epic can make a game as gorgeous as Infinity Blade for the iPhone and not WP7, Microsoft has fallen behind. (I voted for this one)
-Front Facing Camera: Only worthwhile if Skype ever makes an app. Besides that I still don't see much of a point.
-4G: Always a welcome addition, but I don't want it if it's going to adversely affect battery life.
-At least 32GB NAND: High quality NAND memory is still not that cheap, so I think the minimum should be 16GB (that's more than most people would ever need).
also voted for GPU, since this MS's mobile gaming rig. or so they said

Good luck with the PSP thing, apparently the PSP2 is just as powerful as the current PS3. If Microsoft can make their next generation of WP7 phones better than that, I would be more than impressed.
Depends on the technology really and coverage.

1080p is a terrible thing to want in a phone. look at file sizes of 720p. then consider post-processing, editing, and emailing/uploading somewhere.
check out some of the forums that deal with shooting amatuer action (motorcycling/bicycling/bowling/whatever) in HD and see what they're saying. 1080p is nuts. if we're not careful we'll end up with no option for lower quality, and a 5 second clip that is 75Mb !
that's all

Better GPU comes with dual cores. Multi core is mainly for media and gaming. The mobile gaming market is headed towards PC capabilities.
FFC, Skype purchased Qik. Don't know if they will make it to WP7 though. Me personally I don't care, but having the option to use a FFC means everything.

Will the Nexus Prime smash the SGS2?

From all the rumours floating around at the moment the Nexus Prime sounds like a beast. Samsung made, 1.5gHz exynos chip, Amoled 720p screen. 5mp rear camera w/1080p and a front facing 1mp camera. No physical buttons and Android 4.0.
But when the SGS2 gets Android 4.0, other than the 720p screen will it be pushed to 2nd in the awesome stakes? After all we have an very nice camera and and awesome chipset. Just like the Nexus S was a google branded SGS1, will the Prime be a google branded SGS2?
Any thoughts?

It depends on how it all comes together. A higher quality 5mp camera could produce better results that our 8mp camera so that doesn't scare me. More power is always good. A pure Google phone is always good from a latest and greatest perspective. It's also guaranteed to have NFC which is good.
The screen kind of scares me. My SGS2 screen (an early build) is great but there have been lots of reported QC issues, wide variations in color temperature, the gradient issue, and the left side banding issue. Pushing even more pixels to get to 720p is going to be tough to pull off based on the challenges they experienced in the jump from SAMOLED to SAMOLED+.
The radio's important and I wouldn't go back to something lower than 21MB HSPA+. I doubt it'll support any form of LTE because there are too many frequencies to contend with.
So count me as a "maybe."
Thanks for responding. I am not so sure either. That's why a discussion is a great place to start. Hopefully it will smash the new Iphone.
http://www.fonehome.co.uk/2011/07/22/google-nexus-prime-processor-detailed/
It all seems over the edge to me. From looking at the previous releases of google phones starting from Nexus One which consisted similar specs to the desire, and the nexus S which again has the similar specs to the Galaxy S, infact they shared the same chipsets. I'm not implying that the prime would indeed carry the similarities of the GS2 on that behalf but maybe not too far off.
An improved build of the AMOLED+ screen with all the banding issue and etc gone (I doubt it'll be 720p either). I'd say yes to dual core and maybe 1.5ghz (why not?). 5mp camera, (really?) I doubt they'd go anything below an 8mp due to competitvity and yes yes we all know that the cmos sensor makes all the difference but most people prefer figures rather than facts which is where the target audience usually lies (consider iphone 5 being the biggest role in competitiveness here).
All in all any specs that surpasses the GS2 is a path to the right direction although it's too early to judge since quad core is only around the corner, so time will tell. I personally wouldn't buy a google phone; my list of reasons would stuff this whole thread.
Next Nexus will also be google with bare basic OS , that means no awesome Samsung media codecs.
Also Nexus S had no external sdcard only 16gigs build in.
Only time will show how crippled its gonna be, sure certain aspects might be better depending who is gonna make it, CPU/GPU might be better , 720p AMOLED screen would be nice or at very least some decked out IPS panel.
Generally nexus devices never been better then some alternatives , but its subjective everyone has different needs. I am more interested in next Galaxy successor !
Yes the galaxy 3 will be a huge step. I think that all the codec support on this device is amazing. The nexus s was OK but destroyed by the s2. The next nexus probably won't beat the s2 when you look at the previous steps taken.
Samsungs software this year has been excellent. It's one of the few devices with duel core being optimised well. Will vanilla android be optimised? Probably not.
nexus s will be interesting, and will be worth a look at if it boasts a 720p display.
EDIT: haah i meant nexus prime , thanks robt772000

Nexus Prime
tl;dr
Nexus "Prime" will be a very good phone (atleast I can hope so!). But even if it smashes GS2, no shame in that. By all accounts, Prime would be released 6+ months after GS2, so it would be a shame if it can't beat GS2.
I am worried about few other points which you guys might have better knowledge:
1. How would be the application support for Ice cream? Will it be compatible with 2.x application?
2. What would be native/suggested resolution and form factor of displays? I assume that it's 480*800 for 2.x models. Is that going to change with Ice cream?
3. What would happen to Honeycomb? Ice cream is supposed to be across both tablets and phones? So, it appears to me that HC was just a stop-gap arrangement to allow android foot-hold in the tablet market.
4. What sort of processors are they going to support? My assumption was that HC was typically made compatible with Tegra2 and the primary reason why it sucked initially. I would bet that if HC ran on Exynos with Samsung optimized drivers, it would be much better than what it is now.
Most people tend think the battle would be with iOS, my idea is that the biggest threat for Ice cream will be from Microsoft!
Remember Windows 8 - it's being optimized for both tablets and notebook/desktops. Will be running both on x86 and ARM processors. And from initial views, that looks simply awesome. MS is going to have same platform running for phone, tablets and notebooks. I can't help and appreciate how much it would attract the developers. You develop for 1 platform which could run the application on any of the devices. And the customer base - everyone running Windows PC. That is huge. As much as I hated Microsoft, I can say with no shame that I simply love Win 7. I believe I had no BSOD over 1-1.5 years of using Win 7. Ice cream need to step up and has to bring something really useful to be a successful.
My only real concern is the screen quality, the SAMOLED plus is inferior to the regular SAMOLED due to its massive banding and QC issues, for day to day use theres basically no difference between both, For pictures the SAMOLED made some pictures prettier because it was not able to display the flaws/image compression artifacts, color is better on the Plus though. All in all it boils down to the screen quality for me.

All that and probably no micro sd card slot again.
Most definitely. It's the Big G's OFFICIAL phone. And should it have this epic HD-high-resolution 4.0" or 4.3" display. It'll blow the GS2 away. Not to mention whatever minor processor improvements there will be.
Also it'll be rocking 4.0 - K.O - Game Set Match.
Anyhows, I'm just happy they're continuing the Nexus range, because it really is something that showcases Android and combats iOS and that really brings the best of the best to the table. (well so far it has)........well not really with the Nexus S, but that is still a damn good phone. But this Nexus Prime looks like it's going to be another Nexus One, ground-breaking.

hmmm I agree with you. Microsoft are really stepping up their game. (ABOUT TIME!!) But I think while Apple and Microsoft are trying to unify the desktop and mobile experience into ONE, those two will compete a lot more. I think Android will take a beating in the coming years...but I also think that people (like myself) enjoy a change.
I for one, would HATE to be working on my Mac, or windows...then go out and switch to my mobile and then have the exact same/a VERY similar experience on my phone. I actually like the change in OS, the change in apps...but then again, I suppose most people just want everything to be exactly the same because it's more "simple" :/

Yes, both MS and Apple are trying to unify the platforms. My view is that Apple will again try to keep that niche segment and their loyal user base. MS, like Google will license their software to other vendors. The whole scenario sounds similar to what happened in the desktop space 20 years back. History repeating itself - we have Apple on one side and MS/Google with a different approach on other. Players like IBM and Compaq making way for present day vendors like Samsung/Nokia etc.,
Ho well, I won't be surprised if in a year from now, with dual core 2ghz ARMs and 1+ gig of ram in phones we will see windows 8 running on smartphones with metro UI on top... If it runs on a tab, it'll run on a smartpone. Hell the SGS2 is crushing any tablet currently, it's just sad that all the SGS are always given unused potential (remember the sgx540 on sgs1, and now exynos mali400 on sgs2). But hey that's what makes them future proof, we'll still see SGS1 running new games and apps in a year or two.
I liked android for the customization and liberty it gave me, but I pretty much ran around it both on tablet (transformer) and phone (SGS1 &2) and I think that my next gen of devices will be wp7.5 mango (if the WP7 SGS2 ever comes out!) and then wp8 stuff late 2012.
Honestly I think the current tab market is just ****ting his pants at windows 8's arrival, because frankly, no iOS or honeycomb can rival win8's functionalities, if it runs smooth of course... (win 8 transformer 2 ).
Standing from here I really see MS as the big winner of following years. Android had 2 years to evolve into something really productive, yet it didn't really came there and still has a lesser quality catalog compared to the app store. But who knows what ICS will bring ? we can only wait.
Just a quick thing I've been thinking about...
If the Nexus Prime does have a 720p display and that's what games are played on, the experience most likely would not be as smooth as the SGS2 as the difference is pixels of the two devices is very drastic. Even qHD hurts game performance. Also, isn't retina display the most pixels needed for a 3.5" screen? I have a hard time believing there would be ANY noticeable difference between a 720p screen and qHD.
It depends on what hardware it will have.
If it will boast a Qualcomm Krait, then it will blow it away. If it uses anything else, then no, it might be slightly faster performance wise, but that's all. The only thing going for it will be the 720p screen, but we still don't know the size of the display or what type it will be.

It's supposed to have a ginormous screen, so think bigger than 4.3" of the SGS2. I don't think it will surpass the DPI of the retina display even at 720p or at that screen size.
If it doesn't surpass SII in every spec then it will be just another SII. You will have to make compromises between a lower mp camera or no card slot, etc. If it beats SII in every section then yes, it will blow it away.
Samsung Nexus for Me
Winner is
Around 2.5x higher resolution screen, 1280x720 vs 800x480
Around 50% crisper display of text, images and video, 315 PPI vs 217 PPI
More than 10% larger screen, 4.6" vs 4.3"
i will go for Nexus !!

Note 2 worth it? (AKA ****ing really, Samsung?)

My infuse has pissed me off enough and I'm looking to upgrade ASAP. I was looking at the note 2, but then I realized the ONLY upgrades are quad core and 2GB of RAM. Almost everything else is DOWNGRADED. Did samsung have pothead 12-year-olds on the dev team for this one?
Note: If you're going to read past this point you're not allowed to comment on how much I hate my Infuse. You live your life, I'll live mine, k?
I guess my question is should I just get the original note since it'll be much cheaper once they release the note 2, and I don't need a quad core?
I would get the note 2 if I wanted to but I don't want to kinda because when samsung does crap like this:
Development dies quickly
Nobody buys it
It ends up like the Infuse with the best xda devs quickly leaving for real devices designed by people that clearly understand what they're doing
When it loses xda dev support, it starts pissing me off like the infuse does
The original note would be a very good choice. It seems several people have used upgrades for the SGS3 and are very pleased. I have the international (quad core) SGS3 and will be keeping it for quite sometime.

What about the note 2 is a downgrade? Haven't really looked at the two in depth...but by a quick Google search it appears the only downgrade is that the note 2 has a 720x1280 resolution vs note 1 800x1280 resolution... but this is kinda expected when increasing screen size
Besides that most things seem the same or better...mainly the CPU and RAM
I don't see the note 2 being like the infuse because the note 1 was a huge success and still has a thriving dev community with some of the best devas
Plus being one of the first quad core, 2gb RAM, lte phones for Att...you can be sure it will attract the devs...only thing I can see making them leave the note 2 in the future would be for the sgs4...when ever that comes out
If you don't care about CPU and ram then don't get the note 2...stick with the note 1
But if your so concerned about dev community, why would you get a predecessor? Where the logic in that? Any of the big devs of the note will likely jump ship for the note 2...

.1mp is not much of a difference and likely won't be noticed (personally I rarely use the front cam anyways...)
I like 16:9 better then 16:10 anyways...it better for videos since that's what most HD videos are set to
PPI, again 20 isn't much...and likely won't be a noticeable difference
I personally would choose the note 2 over the note 1...but it really all comes down to personal preference
But still...you kinda make a big deal about dev life, so there is still no logic in choosing a predecessor over a new device if you want the best a good dev scene -as I said earlier...a lot of the note 1 devs will likely jump ship to the note 2
But again...all personal preference

I'll see what happens to the price of note #1 after #2 has been out for a day or two. If it goes to like $100 or $50 I'll definitely skip over the $300 PoS with $10 worth of hardware difference.
I'll be upgrading to the note II as well. I don't think you've done enough research if you are saying everything is a downgrade.. What exactly is a downgrade? In regards to decreased screen resolution, the subPPI went up and the screen is no longer RGBG. The US Note II's are also getting Exynos + LTE... Its also skinnier than the original note which isn't a bad thing.. IMO at least.
OK you've convinced me that it's a sidegrade.
You think it's worth $200 more (probably $100 on N1 and $300 on N2 for release) for 2 more cores (which still power many phones flawlessly) and another GB of RAM when Android has the best RAM management in the world?
side note: http://www.att.com/shop/wireless/devices/samsung/galaxy-note-carbon-blue.html note #1 has LTE too bud.
the rated ppi is deceptive. you are looking at pentil matrix rgbg vs real world resoloution. pentile matrix is a little weird they are geting away with high resoultion ratings by comparing it to crt tecnology. there are situations with different colors and contrasts that rgbg can create the number of lines it is rated as but it's not what is actually underlying. when you look at rgbg screens you may see a weird diagnal screen door effect depending on the colors on the screen since the pixels wind up being a little spaced out. high contrast stuff is not nearly as crisp, in effect text readability suffers. pick up an htc one x which has near iphone pixel density on an ips panel lcd and scale the text down till you can't read it, try the same on a gs3 which has a close enough screen size and the same rated resolution and you will see the ips is superior in this regard to the pentile matrix amoled. i would pick up an i777 gs2 before i got a gs3 for the size and i honestly think the i777 screen is clearer at the much lower resolution because the samoled+ is not pentile matris but thesamoled and samoled hd are.
also the older samsung devices are a 16:10 (i think this is what he tablets are, i dont feel like looking it up.) or 15:9 (most phones were this for a while) aspect ratio. this is good if the horizontal resolution is whole number scalable to hd video so there isn't a lot of estimations going on (1920x1200 would be ideal) because there is room for subtitles or the black bars just get bigger but it's often not. i'd look at horizontal res (in landscape) and compare it to common video resolutions over reading pixel count or density or vertical pixels or aspect ratio. and the .1 of an mp is nothing to worry about, i'd be more concerned about optics and firmware. i'm sure the pictures are actually improved.
about the dev community, right now the infuse is better than it's ever been. a lot of young talent is out there and guess what, they can't afford new phones, so yea dev drops off but it picks back up. if you want more dev buy a nexus or international device. the note 2 being exynos might see more dev as it may be more compatible with the international versions. i wouldn't worry about core count, watch the market, if the exynos 5 gets into a phone it's a dual core that runs with the ideal performance of the quad core, but the real world performance is much better since parallel processing isn't directly scalable. the snapdragon s4 chip (dual core) in the s3 and one x is also a beast. i'd be getting the most furture proof device. specs are almost meaningless since they don't relate to performance as directly as we would like them to.
in the end it's up to you, both great devices, the n2 will be more powerful but if the cost is a concern the n1 is still very good by any standards.
Yey finally an opinion I trust (ok I trust the rest of you but dani is an xda deity)

[Discussion]All modern Andro phones are so big and bulky

I was wondering why they made Android smartphones so big? For me the display size above 4.5 inches are useless. Who wants so big dimensions in his pocket? I had Note for a week. It was so uncomfortable. I even prefer 4.3 inch display instead 4.5 one. But these with small dimensions doesn't have good hardware.
Now according to my criteria there are only three phones with MONSTER hardware - Xiaomi MI-2 . MI-2S and Meizu MX-4
So I don't know what to buy.
What do you think? With this temp the displays will be 6 inches, which is ridiculous and ..... If I want tablet I will buy tablet.
It's a matter of opinion.
I went from a HD2 (4.3) to a SGS3 (4.8), and more and more I find even the size of my SGS3's screen to be too small. I watch a lot of films, play a lot of games and use my phone as an Ereader. Below 5" is too small for my taste. I'm actually happily anticipating the Note 3's potential 6" screen.
If all you do is the occasional casual game, post on a forum, read some webpages and do other, non-big things (More commonly referred to as 'the activities of the average iSheep'), a 4.5+" screen will probably feel bulky, yes.
Why would a small screen need heavy hardware? It's not as if it has to push a lot of pixels... . In fact, the hardware will be completely wasted as there is nothing one does that requires the processing power.

Sorry , but I am not iSheep. I hate very very much Apple iPhone!
I don't play games or if I play they are very simple. I am using it for some special thins in my daylife. Android can be programmed to do specific tasks in specific time. This is very useful. But I want a bit little size of the displays.

Just get a HTC One S. Great phone, getting Sense 5 soon. Krait processor. Very slim and small. Perfect. Job done

The three options according to GSMarena.com phone finder searching tool were Xiaomi Mi-2 , Xiaomi Mi-2S and Meizu MX-4.
I am really looking for Xiaomi. It is something great , but in this forum here people don't like it. And I know the reason.
The other variants are HTC One S , HTC First or Galaxy 4. (The last is big , but not enough to be compared to S4 , One and Xperia Z).
I guess it depends on what you do with your phone. What do you do that requires "monster" hardware and if it really does, how are you able to deal with the tiny screen size ?
I have the Galaxy S3 and the screen size is too "small" for the tasks that actually use the hardware to any great extent. Temple Run is okay, but many games are hard to play on such a small screen. I've watched Netflix on it quite a few times but it's never a really pleasant experience - my 10" tablet allows for video to be immersive, but the 4.8" screen is to small to really focus in on. It's too small to navigate most web-sites on without annoyance.
Is there a special program you use that needs high-end hardware ? Are you just not bothered by the tiny screen when it comes to the above tasks ?
I don't consider the S3 to be particularly "big" or "bulky" as I can fit it in my pocket and now that I'm using only bumpers for protection (along with screen protector and phone skin) it's really quite thin - so hardly bulky at all. If it can comfortably fit in my pocket I guess I don't find it that big. I can use it one handed, too.
Yes , the usage is the most important thing.
About the games - I don't play games often. I don't like FPS or somthing like that , cause now I am too old for this kind of games. And the experience is not as good as the one on the PCs. I have played only racing games. Especially Need for Speed Series and Asphalt.
Now on my phone (Galaxy W) I have only Temple Run 2 , Scrabble , Simple Chess. Temple Run 2 lags sometimes.
For films. I don't watch films on my phone. Even if I would have 5 inch phonblet. I watch sometimes only Youtube.
So maybe it isn't necessary to buy quad core phone. Dual is enough.
But for the RAM. Maybe it should be 2 GB.

I agree that the usage is what's important. Some companies do release some small phones, like Sony and Samsung. I'm actually a really big fan of the small android phones like the Xperia Ray, S3 mini, Xperia U... okay maybe they aren't that small compared to the Xperia Minis. but their size fits right in the palm of my hand and they're pretty slim and the hardware is pretty decent for their size (the Ray is amazing, still can't get over it).
The screen size, well it is user dependent, by that i mean it depends on what you do with your phone. Some games actually feel more comfy to play on a small screen (like Cytus, easy to reach the notes but sometimes hit notes by accident.) some are also comfy to play on a bigger screen because the UI might be too small (like Plague Inc. really small map. but you can zoom in if needed. its a hassle though). For me though i prefer watching movies on my Ray because the image looks clearer on smaller screens. which i enjoy.
One comment on screen size. its equally hard to use a full keyboard on a small screen as it would be on a big screen. still press the wrong keys by accident. but that's just me
If you don't want a big phone, don't get one. Pretty simple.

Normally I'd complain about someone bringing up a year-old thread with such an inane and unhelpful comment, but things have actually changed since this thread was active.
Firstly, I'll address your comment. Small Androids are plentiful, but good small Androids aren't. And small Androids with "flagship" specs are few and far between.
In fact, there's only ONE, the Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. Apart from the 4.3" 720p screen and smaller battery, it's every bit the beast of a phone as its bigger brother. Same processor, same 2GB RAM, same 20.7MP camera, same build quality, same software features, etc. In fact, since it only has a 720p screen instead of a 1080p, the Z1 Compact absolutely screams.
Even better, Sony is about to come out with the Z3 Compact (they skipped the Z2 Compact). Despite being exactly the same height and width, they're cramming a 4.6" screen (some rumors say 720p, some say 1080p) in there, and making it a hair thinner too. Dual front facing speakers, SD801 processor 2 or 3gb RAM (depending on the rumor), and the same software suite and 20.7MP camera as before.
Both are only slightly larger than an iPhone 5s or 5C, and much smaller than the current 5.0-5.5" flagship phones.
Oh, and they're waterproof.
These "Compact" Sonys are a departure from the "Mini" phones the other main manufacturers, like the Galaxy S4 Mini, LG G2 Mini, HTC One Mini(s), etc. which all are neutered spec-wise in many ways. Lower MP cameras, slower processors, less RAM, sub-HD screens, etc. And some are only "mini" in that they're not as huge as their bigger brothers, but could hardly be considered small.
The Droid Mini is a pretty good phone actually - all the specs of the Droid Ultra or Droid Maxx, but only available with Verizon in the US.
The Moto X is small for its largish screen size, and fits the hand (and pocket) nicely. It's substantially smaller than other 4.7" phones like the Nexus 4 or HTC One (M7).
I changed from my HTC Desire S to a Jiayu G3C, and it was a really big change for me. The Desire S was really good for one hand and fits perfectly in the pocket.. But the Jiayu it's really big. I think more than 4" is too much big to be called a "phone", is like I already see those phone as a "phablets"
I agree, many modern phones feel big and bulky. The range of 4-4.5'' is ideal for me.
Yes they're on the bigger side as of late as that trend continues to be in vogue, but holy moly are they lighter than any iPhone I've ever owned and used. I know the 5s is super light, but never owned one. I was used to the iPhone for awhile and never thought twice about its weight but after playing with some friends droid devices, the iPhone has always felt like a brick since then.
Nexus5 fits like a glove!
Personally, I thought the iPhone 4 was the perfect size because I could use everything on the screen comfortably with one hand. Now with my GS4 there are areas in the screen I just cant reach one handed the way I used to.
I think that They designed it for the user who often to play game and watch HD movie on their smartphone. Maybe that's why Samsung have "mini" version like Samsung S3 Mini.
But of course the can't make Galaxy Note smaller. It wouldn't be good.
It seems that soon enough we will have the Galaxy Alpha, which should be a good contender for the Z1 Compact (and it's straight successor, the Z3 Compact).
But I do agree with the OP, phones are getting a little too big for my tastes. Do notice I said "tastes", because it really is a matter of taste.
There are plenty of users willing to carry a larger device and take advantage of the added "screen real-estate".
For me are phones the best around 5-5,5 inch.
But maybe you can try out the HTC one mini or the LG G2 mini or the new Galaxy Alpha

For me it's the bigger the better, but we need bigger pockets on our clothes soon
