Hi guys,
I'm moving from my hard-bricked GS2 to a Razr HD. Second hand and got the carrier unlock code yesterday, so I was all like "ooook now the fun begins... time to root ICS,, OTA keeper, OTA update, etc..."
Root went smooth. OTA rootkeeper too, then I upgraded to JB (I'm in France, phone is SFR branded so I got the OTA update), and recovered root. But then I thought "ok, I should probably do a reset to factory, just to start clean from here on". Bad idea, as I ended on a bootloop, hardly possible to access fastboot mode. But I managed to access it in the end, first tried a "Factory" from there. The phone booted correctly, but something was still wrong: battery indicator was "?", and at every reboot I ended up in bootloop again. No other choice than to flash the full rom via RSD Lite, which I did earlier today.
And now, I'm back on a fully working 4.1.1, but OTA RootKeeper says no "protected root" available, and I can't restore root at all. Tried Matt's Razr HD Utility, but it fails at downgrading to 4.0.4 since my bootloader is locked... and I'm not too found of unlocking it, since I've been VERY unlucky for the past 2 months, and voiding my warranty now would be a message to the universe like "hey dude, juste add another mess with my stuffs, now's the time!"
Am I correct in the assumption that the only way to re-root my device is to unlock bootloader/downgrade to 4.0.4 with razr hd utils/flash original SFR 4.0.4/root/rootkeeper protect/re-upgrade via OTA/rootkeeper restore ? Are there any progress in rooting directly from JB ?

Just to make sure you do have SuperUser, SuperSU, and I generally prefer to include BusyBox all into the mix. Also, if you would download Root Checker by Joey Krim in the Play store. Just to confirm and we know you are missing root click the verify should indicate the appropriate SU's are red and not engaged, slide to the right verify BusyBox, chances are it is green, if so you are in good condition. With Busybox in green, exit go into SuperUser and update the binaries, once that is completed go into SuperSU and click the update. Go back to Root Checker and double check, click verify root on SuperUser/SuperSU and should be green = rooted. :good:
Root is red.... and so is busybox (however it is installed by default on my marketplace apps...) So if I understand correctly, I'm f***ed (at least, until a JB exploit is found, or I decide to void my warranty and unlock the bootloader, which I'm probably not going to do for now...)

If the color is Red all around then yes, there is little you can do. However, there are ways to get out of this and gain root without waiting even if they have Jelly Bean 4.1.1. For instance those on JB that own the XT926 can use the Droid Razr HD Utility 1.10 > go back to ICS 4.0.4 > apply the 1st update > Root > Voodoo OTA, SU Backup > apply the JB 4.1.1 update. I have done this twice and have been quite successful on my XT926 with Verizon.
But, in general going back to the discussion. If after the update the Supers are not showing, as long as Busy Box is Green and in place, Root can be restored by updating the binaries.
If your RSD/Flash you device root is gone.
The flashing completely formats and wipes the area for system.
Either you have to root JB, from what I understand you can.
Of back to ICS, root, Voodoo install, protect, then upgrade to JB.

I haven't found anything about that... however I might have missed something. Do you have any link to explain how ?
Regarding the flashing via RSD, that is what I thought, but was unsure. Coming from the GS2, the equivalent software is Odin, and wiping doesn't necessarily occurs (depends on build.prop content), so I had a *little* hope.
@KachowPow: indeed, Matt's Razr HD Utility for XT926 is known to work on the XT925 too... however it requires an unlocked bootloader. I *could* unlock mine since Motorola provides the code for XT925 too, however I'm not too found of voiding my warranty right now because of the whole "universe against me" thing ...
I'll probably wait for a proper JB exploit then. For now, root was important to *try* to restore contacts data from my old TB backup of my Galaxy S2 (I wanted to do a "dirty" restore of the co,tacts, hoping that even if it's not the same phone/apk/databases they would at least appear on the phone and be able to sync to Gmail from there.... And then I would have wiped to factory default and restored from Gmail). But I've managed to mess around with the contacts2.db from my GS2 and created a CSV with first name/last name/phone number(s). So for now I'm good and don't actually need root anymore. Yeah, that was a "just talking about my life" moment, so what ? )

Not sure what carrier you are on but if you flashed to JB, then just find the xml and flash to ICS, then you root.
I used Voodoo to preserve root my device.
I'm pretty sure there *IS* a JB root in the last day or so.
You will need to search since I don't know for sure.

edit the XML ?? I'm new to RSD lite, but from what I've understood so far, edit the xml is only neededn when flashing via RSDLite/fastboot so that you don't end-up with the "unknown fastboot command" or something like that (by removing 2 lines in the fw xml file, indeed).
How is this related to going back from JB to ICS ? I'm not sure that's possible with a locked bootloader (which I'm probably not going to unlock). Also, how is my carrier related to this operation ? (the phone was SFR simlocked, but I bought an unlock code online and I'm no using it on Free Mobile)
Or did I miss something ? (btw, no mention of a JB root for the Razr HD, only for the Razr M, and it is assumed it won't work on HD because for reasons I am yet to find)

As the title states, I have the Verizon Maxx on 4.2.2 (software version 12.15.15) and it is completely stock (never rooted or anything else). I'm thinking of rooting it and putting it on the 4.4 Kit Kat update. I plan on using RockMyMoto 1.1 to root first using DG4FREE's guide. Then I will use MotoWpNoMo 0.0.4 as needed for SlapMyMoto 1.0.
I think I can do everything up to SlapMyMoto just fine. I just have a few questions about using SlapMyMoto:
1) Before using SlapMyMoto you have to "restore to the 4.2.2 Camera update." This can be done with RSD Lite (or House of Moto), right?
2) If I use RSD, I would use the first file listed here (Blur_Version.12.7.7 ...), correct? (Yes, I do understand Verizon's naming scheme for updates...)
3) Towards the end of SlapMyMoto process, what does "Once the device has rebooted, please take the 4.4 OTA" mean? Do I use the update.zip method to install the 4.4 OTA from the stock recovery or some other method? If so, where can I find a reliable 4.4 OTA zip for the Maxx that won't brick my phone?
4) Going along with question 3, as I have come to understand reading forum posts I will have to run the install update from sdcard using the update.zip twice for Kit Kat to be finally installed. Is that correct? If so, will SlapMyMoto actually keep root from 4.2.2 or not after the second install!?
5) After doing this and successfully getting root on 4.4, will I be able to receive OTA updates in the future after flashing back to stock 4.4 with RSD?
6) Anybody having issues with root on their Ultra/Maxx and Kit Kat 4.4 making it unusable? I don't use other mods at all (i.e. Xposed, etc.), but I do plan on using ART.
If it seems likely that I might brick my phone, I might just stick with updating to 4.4 without root. I don't know yet. Thank you in advance for your help.

Just to clarify, it's RockMyMoto while on stock 4.2...then MotoWPNoMO...then you need to RSD back to the 12.15.15 camera update...then you run SMM...then you update to 4.4...then you finish SMM commands in ADB...install supersu or superuser...done.

4. The update runs twice...sort of...it installs the new recovery (no turning back) and then you will run it again for the update. SMM needs to be finished off with the ADB commands in 4.4 to get root. SMM already planted all the seeds in 4.2.
5. Not so simple, generally speaking...once you have root, especially on a Moto...you'll have to flash back to stock to get any OTA...or just wait a while for someone around here to get a fix...it's usually out by the time a public OTA get's around anyway. If you want to keep root, I would recommend that you never take an OTA from VZW unless you read up on XDA firs and understand the implications.
6. I am rooted 4.4 on my Maxx following this exact process and using the ART runtime...not having any issues at all, I even have SafeStrap re- installed for back ups.

I have just one question to clarify your answer: are you sure it is the second file? I was under the impression that Verizon named their updates for the version from which you are updating from, so the first file there would actually be the 12.15.15 software even though it is named 12.7.7.

Happy to help! You are correct in the VZW OTA naming conventions...but the files in that link are actually the FXZ files to flash with using RSD, et al...not an OTA zip file, so they are named correctly by their version. 12.15.15, the second file, is definitely the camera update and the correct one to use.

I just wanted to follow up on this thread for anybody else out there who might have been in the same boat as me. After completing this whole process a couple days ago, everything has been running smoothly now that I'm on 4.4 with root. I did not enable ART as I mentioned earlier I would since it turns out I needed to install Xposed to get a particular app that performs a root check to work. Other than that, smooth sailing except having to redo some steps manually.
The goal: Get my sluggish phone (Razr Maxx HD, JB 4.1.2, currently 9.16.6.XT926.Verizon.en.US, rooted, bootloader locked) to be less sluggish.
The proposed method: Wipe phone and start over.
The "problem": Because I am rooted and want to stay that way, I am aware that I can't just do a factory reset. I believe that I need to unroot first, then wipe, then reroot. But there are many more possible methods to do this than there were before and I'm having trouble figuring out which might be the best method for me (or which will even work, at all).
Background: If I had just blindly done what I did the last time I wiped (I think I was starting from ICS 0.7.2 last time, not JB), I would have backed up everything, used DROID_RAZR_HD_Utility1.10 which I have from before (dates appear to be 1/28/2013) to go back to 0.6.25.X926., and, using the zip files I have from before, go from 0.6.25 to 0.7.2 to 9.1.41 to 9.16.6. (I was never able to successfully take OTA updates). Like this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024423 BUT, now that I'm on JB, it's not clear to me that I can even do this. One post is telling me that if I'm on 9.16.6, I should NOT use Droid Razr HD Utility 1.10. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33610625#post33610625 and when I found the thread for the 1.21 utility, it also says no 9.16.6.

My actual question: I think I could really use some help narrowing down my options. Do I have any options at all? If so, can anyone suggest what my realistic options actually are? I don't care if I end up in JB or KitKat at the end; I do want to be able to restore some of the data from some of my apps using Titanium Backup and/or MyBackup Pro; and I want to be rooted when I am done. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

to get rid of the slowness of the phone i recommend going to a lolipop rom , LP has to be the quickest my phone has ran... ever.
-step 1 use rsd lite to flash [4.4.2] 183.46.10 fxz (make sure it ends with a 10 not a 14 or 15 or you wont be able to unlock bootloader)

that rom comes with supersu built in so you will have root. if your reason for having root is to have exposed, it doesnt work on lolipop so stop at sstep 3 and either flash a KK custom rom or just flash supersu which will give you root on stock kitkat

Couple of followup questions based on the reading I've done so far from the links you provided, just so I know what I'm doing before I do it:
1. I think I get Steps 1 and 2. After Step 2 I am rooted and on stock KK, correct? So if I stop there do I still need to "flash supersu" per your comment at the end? Does the root in step 2 put supersu in my apps, and if not can I not just install it from google play?
2. Seems like I can use the Step 1 method to flash back to JB (or any other FXZ I can find) if I want. If I do that, is there any way to root JB, or is this trip I'm about to take, a one-way trip? Just to clarify, JB hasn't always been slow for me... it's just slowed down recently. Not saying I want to go back to JB for sure, but I like to know what options I am closing off when I move forward, and reviews of KitKat are not universally splendid.... I hear you about the custom ROM but for various work-related reasons I may be better off staying stock (well, stock + root) for a while at least.

yes you can install it from playstore, but once your bootloader is unlocked you can always root by flashing in custom recovery. you dont need exploits anymore
All done, worked great!
So as the title says, I recently sunshine unlocked my 4.2.2 (12.15.15 firmware) MAXX. At this point, I have a custom recovery from the root method I used on the phone a year ago, but other than that I'm just running the stock 4.2.2 Camera update.
What is the easiest way to get up and running on a current 4.4.4 build? Can I use RSDlite to return to stock 4.2.2, or does that not work with an unlocked bootloader? Could I RSDlite to 4.4.4 directly? What about flashing TWRP to my phone now and using that to flash a 4.4.4 rom? I dont care about losing all of my data or anything like that.
I'm a little confused on what I can and can't flash depending on the current version of andoid I'm on, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
now that your bootloader is unlocked you can have root on any fw version you decide to update to. but you have to be on stock everything before you update to 4.4.4. if the recovery is the only thing you have changed you can just extract it from the fxz for 4.2.2 if that's what your on right now. flash it using fastboot or the easy way using rashr an app from play store. my fav for flashing recoveries. then take the update. after that you can flash T.W.R.P 2.8.4.0 for obake. then reboot to recovery. reboot to system to gain root if it is removed by updating
Thanks for the reply. I'll look into flashing that recovery and try the OTA. Would flashing the whole fxz (which i believe includes a bootlader) hurt me? Also, is there any way one of the OTA's changes the bootloader in a way that could mess up my unlock?
no. once your bootloader is unlocked then it won't relock unless you lock it by command prompt. yes you could use rsd to go back to stock. it has to be the exact version you are currently on. if you try to rsd a version your not on it will fail.
Will it fail in a "your phone is bricked" kind of way or an error message telling you it wont flash?
it will error telling it was aborted. i have done it once that's all it took for me to realise it needed the exact version. i was lucky to have the right one handy

I'm in the same boat and going to do this tonight on my wife's phone.
She's currently on 4.2.2, bootloader is unlocked, rooted, and currently has TWRP installed.
If I'm correct, I need to
1. Flash stock recovery
2. Boot up and take the OTAs
then
3. Flash the latest TWRP
4. Use TWRP to re-root
4. Then I can flash a 4.4.4 rom, such as http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2716824
Is that correct?
As long as my bootloader is unlocked, can I still regain root with the latest OTA?

Honestly, I doubt you have waited this long, but if you have, here is what I am gathering from your question... You want to run 4.4.4 roms instead of 4.2? While on 4.2.2 (if you still are) you can run OSE, AOSB, CM11, and pretty much any 4.4.4 custom rom. (though i can't get cm12 to work on a mini (same software/bootloader/recovery for the most part) on 19.6.3 so that may be out) The only reason you would have to update would be to be on stock 4.4.4. I haven't read up too much on the new OTA's, but I can say this, YOU CAN NEVER GO BACK TO WHAT YOU ARE ON ONCE YOU UPGRADE STOCK. this may not be a big deal for you, but personally, I liked the JB software the best (specifically 12.7.7 that my DEV MAXX came with) I haven't heard anyone say anything positive (really) about VOLTE or any new features, and honestly, not being able to go back on a DEV EDITION sucks. On a side note, I recently bought a Mini (bc my charge port on my DEV maxx crapped out and Moto doesn't have any more, so i am in phone purgatory waiting for *something* but pretty much anyone I have talked to is useless.) I just fxz'd back to 19.5.3 from 19.6.3, but I cannot go backwards any further *completely* @NWKENT has done it numerous times as best as it *can* be done. also, @NWKENT can confirm you absolutely cannot go back from 4.4.4 to an earlier edition. I hope this helps if you haven't upgraded yet. If you have, for most intents and purposes, you haven't really lost anything.
So I have a Droid Razr HD xt926, and I have been looking all over the place and I have found some good threads but I am just worried about bricking the phone. This is what the phone currently is running:
System Version: 183.46.15
Model: Droid Razr HD
Android Version: 4.4.2
Baseband Version: VANQUISH_BP_100731.020.64.21P
Kernel Version: 3.4.42-g3841824
Build Number: KDA20.62-15.1
So I know the System Version 183.46.15 is not a very good version from rooting from what I have found. But I also found a thread on DroidRazr.com that says it can be done. They say to unlock it before you root it. This is what they said to do:
Download Towel Root by Geohot
Download Unlock (HOLY SNIKES)
Then...
1. Install SuperSU from the playstore
2. Install the Towel Root exploit from the link above (click on the lambda symbol in the middle of the page). It is an APK so you must have unknown sources enabled (which I cannot find any type of developer tools or that option available on my phone).
3. Run the Towel root app and install root...wait for the reboot after 15 seconds.
4. Open SuperSU and allow it to update the su binary
5. Install the motoapocalypse apk from the unlock link above. Run it. (I am not sure about this)?
6. Optionally install TWRP or CWM custom recovery. See below links.
7. ???
And on the thread it also says:
Last UPDATE: 183.46.15 is pushing out to the HD and M as we speak. As promised, I have now closed this thread and will no longer be providing unlock/root support. The information here will work if you're still on build 183.46.10 (yes, 182.46.10 works, as well). Follow along to unlock. If you encounter an issue, read the thread. There's very little chance that someone else hasn't encountered it and had it fixed at this point. If you are on a build above 183.46.10, this thread DOES NOT APPLY TO YOU.

WARNING: I can't stress this enough...if you care at all about root, UNLOCK now. Period. Do not debate it, just do it.

So do you guys think this will work or not? If not what do you guys suggest. I was wondering if I could downgrade the version to something else (not sure to what) and then try to unlock and root it. But I am lost because every thread or article I see says something different.
Please help me! I have been looking this up for days now!!
Did you ask these questions on Droidrzr (I can't open that forum at work)? We're all pretty friendly over there.? Anyway, you can't unlock that system version, and you can't downgrade to the previous version to knock, either. However, you should be able to root with Hydrogen Peroxide (search this forum for that).

No I didn't ask that there. I created a login and it wouldn't let me stay logged in, everytime I went to a different page it would say I am not logged in. So I couldn't get it to work.
So you are saying to just use Hydrogen Peroxide and that will allow me to root the system? That seems simple enough...is there a benefit to unlocking it though? Also, could you explain why there are threads that have my system version and then a fix or whatever you call it, and it says to downgrade it to a different version. Why is that?

The benefit of unlocking is being able to flash custom ROMs. The downgrading refers to people that are unlocked, but you can't downgrade since you're locked. Some people want to downgrade so they can run older ROMs that aren't compatible with the newer firmware.

So unlocking will allow me to flash custom roms, I wouldn't be able to do this when I root it without unlocking? So what could I do...is it even worth it?
And I believe this is what you are talking about...
Download & install Notepad++
Download the 183.46.15 firmware
Download & install motorola drivers
Download & install rsdlite 6.1.6-or-so
Download Hydrogen Peroxide x926
Boot phone in AP Fastboot mode
Connect phone to computer using original OEM cable
Wait for drivers to finish installing
Unzip your firmware into a folder
Make a backup of the xml file
Edit the xml file using Notepad++ and remove the ENTIRE line that includes "getvar", then save & exit
Open RSDLite & make sure it sees the phone
Click on the 3 dots to select the xml file in your firmware folder
Click on Flash (or something like that)
Wait a long time until it finishes, maybe 5-10 minutes
Once RSD Lite gives you success, close it
Boot the phone (it will take 10 minutes or so)
Run hydrogen peroxide & follow the instructions
But, seeing how my phone is already running the 183.46.15 firmware, would I still have to download it do you think?
No, you won't be able to flash a ROM with just root. However, you'll be able to delete bloat-ware and add tweaks to make the stock ROM run nicely.
You won't need to do all those steps, since you're already on that firmware.

Root with Hydrogen Peroxide on 182.46.15?
I have an XT926 running Kitkat 182.46.15 and would like to root. Do I have to flash 183.46.15 before running Hydrogen Peroxide exploit, of will it work on this version (182.46.15)?

1. Open VZW_XT926_4.4.2-KDA20.62-15.1_CFC_1FF.xml while inside the zip and remove all lines with the word "var"
2. Put phone in fastboot mode
3. Flash zip with RSD Lite v6.1.4 or higher
4. After flashing restart device and install and run hydrogen Peroxide xt 926 . follow all onscreen
instructions , and you're rooted .
Note : hydrogen Peroxide xt 926 will install Towel Root 3. Device must be connected to the internet while towel root is running.
You still need to flash the firmware even if your phone is already running the 183.46.15 firmware or the root process will fail . Also make sure hydrogen Peroxide ends with xt926 or it too will fail

You must remove 2 lines that contain the word "var" . Only one line says "get var" the other only says "var" . Everything else in your instructions Is correct .

This is great - just what I was looking for! Picked up a phone off ebay, but the guy "helpfully" (!) already upgraded it for me
One thing however, as we're not changing versions, what about also removing this line too?

Will that save the user data, which I just spent ages setting up, before realising root installation was such a pretty severe process?
Any other lines which could be skipped too?
