How to edit .rfs file?
I use the stock ROM 2.3.6 and it has applications that we do not need. I would like to delete it and install a stock ROM
without unnecessary applications.
I would like the instructions for the simplest way.
I have PC, Windows 8 Pro x64.

My PC see apk an rar files, so it's not it.
Well you should be able to just change the file name to xxxxx.apk. You should download 7zip and associate .apk with that instead of winrar. But you might have to change the file name in properties instead of maybe just right clicking and rename.

I fixed problem on my own, but thanks for helping guys.
Make sure that on your computer, you have 'See Hidden File Extensions' in your folders option. You can then rename it and you can change the type.

APKs are just ZIP files. Extract the files from the RAR, archive them as ZIP and then just rename to ".apk". I know this because this is how I theme.

you most likely already got it!
1. open market, press homekey, open task manager, uninstall updates, should bring you back to market 2.3.5
2. if you replaced the original vending.apk with the new market one:
10: Please help! I removed xxx.apk from my phone and I forget to make backup. Somebody give me it.
A: Don't worry you already have it at your PC.
1. unpack PDA.......tar file. here you can see system.rfs file.
2.1 For Windows: open it with MagicISO
2.2 For Linux: mount it as loop device ( mount -o loop system.rfs /mnt ) Remember you have to be root to mount files.
REMEMBER: if you are using deodexed firmware you need deodexed applications

I softbricked my Skyrocket... but before I reflashed it back to stock , I was able to backup my phone with clockwork mod. I was messing around with the
framework-res.apk file so I put a .bak suffix on the original.(right before I bricked it)
When I extract the system.ext4.tar file in the CWM backup I can see the files
framework-res.apk
and
framework-res.apk.bak
I am hoping there is a way to delete the bad file and rename the good file, then recompress to a .tar file, then restore from that.
Any suggestions??
Don't actually unzip the file. Just double click on it and see it you can remove bad file. Again do not unzip the file. Can you get into CWM?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yes i can get into CWM. I also have a copy of the backup on my pc
Fix the copy on your PC. Then flash it
Or just load a new rom and flash it. Do not unzip the file. Just double click it and remove what you need. Then move zip back to SD. Lemme know how it goes
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I cant see the files I need to delete and rename unless I use winrar. Is there a different program that works better with .tar files?
If it were me. Id just flash a new rom. Start from scratch. Try 7zip
LOL I may be confused
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
OMG! wasted my whole day trying this with WinRAR! Never worked! Tried it with 7zip and it worked. Thanks! Now I still have to get that file to work now that I've edited it.
Hi every one,
Today is my first day with xda premium app and am happy to tel u guys that I found out a easy way to edit .apk files right from ur rooted android mobile without the help of PC or development knowledge.. am a newbie not a dev!
So here is wat u need to begin
1) The apk file which u need to edit
2) Root explorer or any root file browser
3) Zipsigner 2 or any signing tool
4) patience to scroll between folders
So lets begin;
Open the root explorer and long click the apk file in /sdcard
Extract all the contents and go to extracted folder; in most of the case u get 5 files
Among them Delete Meta - inf folder and in res folder u can edit wat u want
Make sure not to delete anything except Meta Inf folder
Replace the png which u need
Remember while replacing a png the name should be exact as the parent file
After playing wit files go back and multiselect the remaining 4 files and zip them wit any name
After zipping rename the .zip file into .apk file using the same root explorer
Now go to zipsigner app and sign the modified apk file with platform key
Uninstall the app which u want to replace and install the modified apk and here u go u have ur customized app in ur menu LOLZ.. reply if u have any problems and pls pls don't forget to hit thanks button..
Hit thanks button if I had helped u..
Galaxy y wit xda premium
Renaming to zip needs a file manager asusual I have mentioned root explorer.. and next u have to unzip it.. doesn't reduce steps if u name it to zip..
Using galaxy y and xda premium
Hit thanks button if I had helped u
NinjaMorph. Done.
I'm gonna try this mate, hopefully as easy as mention

Use this xplore "x-plore "
This is give
Open apk as zip
Option ..
The same option is in root explorer as "extract the contents" and dealing with ninjamorph didn't help me and some times after applying theme using ninja and reboot whoa I was stuck at boot loop.. so this process is safe than any other
Using galaxy y and xda premium
Hit thanks button if I had helped u
Mates I used tis method to change the bad looking menu icon in my launcher .. worked perfectly now I have my customized launcher yuppy !

very useful method.
Is there any way for me to extract system apps from firmware, like file manager, and install it or use it as usual apk?
Try titanium back up. Back up your fw, install any desired system app on another compatible fw using restore...
Did it a couple of times for music app & calculator..

Just extract the ROM's tar file using 7-zip etc. then use MagicISO to extract the System.rfs file. You'll find all the system apps in app folder.

I tried that, but when I installing application on device I see: "App is not installed"
You'll have to make it a system app. Do it via Titanium Backup or using any File Explorer with root functionality (Set permission as rw-r--r--).

Set permissions and lib files may be necessary. Place lib files in /system/lib or something like that
