[Q] how to turn solar panel into charger? - Motorola Photon Q 4G LTE

So just now i grabbed an old solar panel for a garden light and it still works, i was wondering if there was an easy way to turn this into a charger?

That looks to be a 3.6V setup, basically a FR6 battery charging circuit. You'll need 5V 500mA in order to build a charger, you'll need to figure out what the panel is putting out. Time to whip out the multimeter, and then figure out a new charging circuit and cell. Probably better off just getting a $15 dollar solar charger from China

Ok, is there any way to change it so it would work?

Looks like you broke the ground wire off, you'll need to test the output from that and the white/blue wire to see what you're getting in direct sunlight. Handy with a soldering iron?

Actually i tested it with its original lights and it still works fine, the ground wire is still there, you may not just be able to see it because the case is black.

Black/blue wire isn't loose?

Oh i didn't notice that, i will fix it tomorrow.

Given the fact that it probably is a lower voltage circuit ie. 1.2-1.4V as opposed to 5V which is needed to operate a proper USB standard charging circuit you would probably have to build a boost converter to up the voltage and hope that the solar panel can provide enough amperage to charge your phone. Keep in mind also that while the USB 2.0 standard dictates a minimum of 500mA, that doesn't mean that your phone consumes less than 500mA while on, and you may only be able to charge the phone on a 500mA circuit while it is in low use.
Given all of that, it probably wouldn't be too difficult to do in a weekend or so given that you can read a schematic and can acquire all the necessary components. If you can get the spec of the solar panel ie. open circuit voltage and closed circuit current I could tell you if that panel would be sufficient to use.

Usb charging

I frequently use the usb cable to charge my device. Does anyone know of a solution that with increase the volts from usb to speed up charging?

You don't want to change voltage as that WILL fry your phone.
What you want is a higher current output (mA).
A computer usb won't do for this, so you'll want a wall charger. But you don't want too high of a current either. Just get one with a higher current than the stock charger.

Thanks for correcting me. The wall charger is what I guess I'm trying to avoid. I charge my phone via usb from my radio in my car but it takes far to long. Any ideas?

Unfortunately, that uses the usb spec which is 5V dc @ 500 mA. And there isn't a way to change that.
You'll have to get a dedicated charger of at least 1 A (or 1000 mA).

****ty, when i use the gps and charge it, its a wash. I guess im hiding a cig outlet in my dash somewhere. sounds like im doing a right up in the passat forum.
Newer Gigabyte boards offer USB ON/OFF charging, which offers slightly more than 1 A of current when the computer is off. But you can still use the port for charging.
My main concern is the usb connection in my car.

You can boost it, just use Ohm's law. Find the element(s) in the circuit and change them.

Well, I = V/R
A car's battery is 12 V. Use a multimeter and identify what circuit elements need to be changed and change them.

I'm pretty sure it's more than a resistor regulating the voltage at 5v. Also, it's not as simple as changing resistors, especially with surface mount devices. It would be MUCH easier to hard wire in a charger with at least 1A current output than mess with a usb connection that also could very well fry the deck.

It depends on your motherboard. My Asus has a feature on the USB 3.0 ports that charges about as fast as using the wall plug

I didn't specifically mention resistors. Circuit elements can be anything from resistors, capacitors, gates, etc.
Thanks for the input guys.

mine will merely maintain the charge while im using the wifi hotspot and have it charging off the laptop. not worth it to mess with the wiring in your car. luckily, i have 12v and 110v in my car so i have options
Am I missing the blinding obvious here? Why not use a car charger?

Guys, what is the maximal output current? Will 1.5A fry the phone/battery? (HTC Sensation of course)

No.
The voltage is what will fry it.
A 1.5 amp charge won't deliver 1.5 amps all the time. That means it's capable of delivering 1.5 amps. The actual amperage is determined by the phone. The phone is only going to draw 1 amp.
What you want to make sure of is that the charger is a standard 5 Volt charger. The voltage is what the charger will deliver every time no matter what is plugged into it. If you have a charger fro a difference device that delivers 12 Volts, it will end your phone.

Charging while using gps :(

Before I got this charge I ran nothing but HTC phones on tmobile. while being plugged into car charger and using gps the battery level goes down fast. It doesn't maintain the charge or add to it while navigating. Is this a samsung thing? Any remedies?

That cannot be right. Make sure your car charger, when it charges your phone, is pulling AC instead of USB.
GPS uses very little juice. Just get the 950ma Motorola charger from Amazon for 5 bucks. Something is messed up if your phone doesn't charge

I use a Monoprice 2A USB charger with an OEM USB cable. Charges extremely slowly or just stays level, but never drains.

With GPS on, you barely Charge with that charger? I know its limited by the kernel at 800mA or so, but damn, that should charge you up fine.
I rock GPS in the car all the time and I still Charge pretty quickly...

All depends on what you're running at that time-4G, cell and GPS reception, etc.

Make sure you are using a high amp charger. I like the one from Motorola.
Even so, with 4g and the screen on - the phone charges slowly. Turn the screen off and it charges much quicker.

A100not recognizing battery??

I have an A100 that was given to me by a friend. It works fine when plugged into the charger. It says "battery status unknown" in system settings and when I unplug it it dies of course. My friend says that their dog chewed the charger cord so they put it away in the closet for about a hear and recently bought a new charger. This issue has been a problem ever sense. I'm thinking that the charging circuit may have been fried. I'm not sure however if the charging circuit is built into the battery or the main board. I can order a battery for around $50 but I don't want to spend it if it isn't going to fix the issue. I tried to OTA to ICS but it won't start the install without a battery charge at least 30%. I plan on breaking out my trusty multi-meter later today and testing some voltages at teatbpoints in the mainboard. Any other ideas? Has anyone else experienced this issue??

My A100 does the same thing. It started after I replaced the LCD. I replaced the battery with one from eBay, but it made no difference. The charge may have run down while I was waiting on the LCD, but I don't know for. As far the eBay battery, who knows about that. It could be charging circuit, since two batteries did the same thing. But, now that I think about it, the original showed 3% charge for a while which enabled me to move to another spot and plug it back in.

Mine did that a while ago, when still under warranty. Sent to Acer, they fixed that charging circuit. Apparently a common problem. I suspect a regulator chip, but it's a guess.

You could honestly just charge the battery sepretly, and I bet it'd work. You could even, if you're talented enough, strap a bigger battery to it and be able to use it for days.

With my A100 not even recognizing that the battery is plugged in, I doubt charging it separately would make a difference. I just want it to "think" the battery is there and charged to at least 30% so I can apply a few OTA updates and acquire root. I don't mind having to use it while on AC power only. I have a Galaxy Tab 2 that I can carry around.

Charger brick

If I'm not mistaken the brick says 1.5 outout and my htc one charger had 1. Is it gonna charge faster or something? This could be a dumb question.

Yes and the new bundled charger supports QuickCharge 1.0
is there any downside to using a charger that outputs more than 1.5a?
no downside to too many, just too few. more amperage, higher possible current (at the same voltage)

Is there a permanent downside to using one with too few amps? Or just the obvious one that the phone won't charge fast (if at all)

No, it will just be less current. In some cases this may mean the phone won't charge at all (for example, a low current power adapter while you are using a hotspot would most likely still drain your battery slowly). Low current won't cause damage but your phone may take longer to be able to turn on when it fully depletes and has to recharge.
Real world example: my phone ran out of battery while I was in my car and I tried to use a cigarette port charger and then immediately power it back on as I had done numerous times at home with the A/C adapter. Unfortunately the car adapter was lower current so it took about 10 minutes for my phone to charge back to a point where it would power on. During this time I was blindly driving around haha.

[Q] Does charging CABLE effect charging speeds?

Im curious if I can use the extraordinarily large USB cable from the nexus 7 coupled with my m8s wall plug and get the same charging speeds from the higher amp charging wall plug? I only ask because HTC makes some pretty short cables and hinders my internet browsing at night abilities :good:

Length of dc wire will lead to voltage drop. Lower voltage means the unit will draw more amps to get the same wattage of power. If anyone needs a longer cable make sure it's not cheap and that it uses a heavier gauge USB cable. Unless you are fan of heat in both your charger and phone.
Sent from my SM-T320 using Tapatalk
Yes, but we are talking a foot or two at most here; the voltage drop would be inconsequential.

Depends. I have seen some pretty crazy six and ten foot cables lol. The user then wonders why the slow charge.
