Hi
I have a Minix neo X5 and want to root the device so I followed the instruction on the thread below on this forum on how to root, here's where I am.
I recently flashed the latest minix neo x5 image and now want to root it, so I followed the instructions On the thread on this forum by first installing CWM. However after changing the CWM file to update and saying yes to install the screen shows an android logo with a red exclamation mark. After a few minutes the box reboots as normal with a message saying the firmware failed to load and do I want to delete the update file.. Any idea what's wrong
Thanks

Sounds like a bad download of the cwm zip. I would try downloading another copy and trying again. Unfortunately, I don't think he posted the MD5's but the copy I downloaded worked so the MD5 should match the following:

I tried again using this file and still the same result, CWM not installed
Just reinstalled official firmware again and tried to install CWM with the same result
I have been trying to install from 4gb class 6 SD card is this ok.
Or could I put the update on a USB stick or other location
Try putting the update.zip in internal "sdcard".
I downloaded mine to sdcard/downloads and renamed it. Then moved it to sdcard.

I am pretty sure the zip needs to be in the root of the /sdcard folder (internal sdcard)

Yeah, update to the latest firmware. It should work after that.
Try OTA Root Keeper (it might save your root so you don't have to root again).
IF not just update, run ViperMod again and install RecoveryInstaller
I can not flash the update. I put the Update on the SD, the system dedects also the update but after the restart the update breaks and the system restart again.
I desperate slowly
Did you extract the file you download to get to the zip file inside? You also have to rename that extracted file. I cant recall exactly what it need to be rename to but I'll check soon as i get near a PC

"EP101_SDUPDATE.zip" i think this is what you have to rename the file
edit: Tips from Baseballfanz For those not able to get it working, a few things to check.
1-Make sure you actually extract the WW_epad-user-8.6.x.x.zip within the zip. Inside the file you download is an Asus folder, inside that is an Update folder, inside that is the WW_epad-user-8.6.x.x.zip file you'll be working with.
2-When renaming, if your PC is set to "hide known extension", you'll not see the .zip so if you type in .zip you'll get filename.zip.zip The file manager on the TF should show you the extension
3-Make sure it's on the root of the sd card and not within any folder.
4-Check spelling of files WW_epad-user-8.6.x.x.zip EP101_SDUPATED.zip
5-Micro sd card is in FAT32 format. Try a different card or format again (after saving your stuffs)
6-File manager on the TF sdcard is internal and Removable/MicroSD is the external sd card.
THESE ARE TIPS FROM BASEBALLFANZ POST SOMEWHERE ELSE ONLY I X'ED OUT THE FIRMWARE NUMBER TO DENOTE THE NEWEST FIRMWARE.... HOPE YOU DNT MIND
Thank you very mutch for your help. I have the last update installed 8.6.6.23 but i can this not rooted. ViperMod no longer works.

I have root with nachoroot. CWM is already on it. Many thanks again!
That's good to hear.
I rooted my phone (nexus s i9020a at&t) and have superuser and downloaded rom manager. I had no idea how to figure out how to flash a rom onto my device on my mac so I downloaded one of the many cyanogen mod 9's directly in rom manager. The rom loaded up perfectly and runs smoothly except there is no app market. When I try to go back into rom manager it force quits out.
I am very new to rooting and hacking into my phone and tried searching for hours and can't figure out what to do. If anyone knows how I can just flash a new updated version of cyanogen mod 9 without using rom manager that would be awesome. I really just need a step by step way to do it on the mac because every time someone posts a rom .zip file it downloads as a folder with random stuff in it and in recovery mode in my phone I don't know how to go about flashing it. So confused. Any help would be so appreciated.
Jess
Check your PM. I couldn't post links as it would have been my first post.
cm9 issue
thanks did you get my replies to your pm? i can't figure this out haha
download cm9 and the gapps add-on(with your phone) in the first post of the cm9 thread. boot into recovery, fimd your rom and gapps files, flash cm9 there, then flash the gapps(google apps), then reboot. you do not need rom manager.
Hmm cm9 does not come pre loaded with android app market so u will have to download the latest gapps from other posts in this forum... then copy it into ur phone from ur computer...then after going to cwm recovery use the volume up down buttons to scroll and the power button to choose...u will have to remember where u pasted the gapps file and u will have to navigate to it ...choose the gapps file and scroll down to yes to flash it then go back and reboot...that's it u will now have google apps in ur nexus s...Remember u do not need to open the downloaded gapps zip file as there is nothing u can do by opening it...good luck and happy flashing...

okay so i downloaded the g apps file and its a folder on my desktop with a few other folders within with random files. i go to recovery on my phone mount my phone drag this folder to my mounted phone. then i go back and do i do instal zip from sdcard? or do i do apply update from sd card? this is where I'm stuck idk where to go from here. if i click install zip from sdcard it makes me navigate and i find the name of the folder but it just brings me to the smaller folders and little individual files it's not just one big file but a bunch of little ones so i can't choose the whole thing.
so im confused
edit: so i guess on my mac when i download the zip file it must unzip it during download and becomes a folder. so i tried compressing the folder back into zip format and go back into recovery and load it but it says installation aborted.

Lost root after installing 9ZGgDXDi.zip.
This of course installed JB 4.1.1 but then when I go to recovery after entering fast boot menu I see a supine green robot with a red triangle with an exclamation point spilling out of its guts. (truly a horrible sight)
It also installed recovery-from-boot.p in System folder.
I know the solution is to rename recovery-from-boot.p file to recovery-from-boot.p.bak or renaming to something else or deleting, however since I lost root I don't see how I can rename or delete this file.
When I use root explorer I cannot mount r/w so cannot rename the file
Using ES File Explorer I rename the file but get the message that rename failed.
Connecting the phone via usb and turning on usb storage I can only access files from sd card and so cannot get to system folder in the parent directory.
Please can someone help destroy or rename the .p file.
If I'm reading it right, you lost your root and recovery after installing the OTA, right? You can still flash a custom recovery and install SU from said recovery after flashing CWM. You would then have the ability to rename the script which replaces the custom recovery with the stock. The file, if IIRC, is called recovery.sh or something along those lines.
Refer to this guide and re-root. Probably the easiest way to solve it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1789216

buddy, there is Q/A thread for the same. I think you must use it first. But if you have made it so here is the solution for rooting:
Q. 4) How Can I flash CMW & Root my Galaxy R.?
A. 4) This is something Critical. Just Joking. Its so easy. If you are over GB then flash Superuser zip file(attached) & if you are over ICS then just flash Ardatdat's Kernel V4 or higher. it will automatically Root your Galaxy R. Link for Ardatdat's kernels in dropbox: → Dropbox ←
Also, one can follow this tutorial for Rooting ICS - > {Guide} Rooting Galaxy R on version 4.0.4 & for flashing CMW please follow this tut -> [Guide] How to flash stock FW and CWW and Root i9103
Also there is Q/A thread for your all questions(most probably) here → http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1983262
Edit: Great, MJ used Hammer first.

i can't flash any kernel because it is a ZIP file
CWR is not recognizing ZIP files
CWR can't see ZIP files
my problem with CWR and ZIP files
Hello, You can try one of these:
1. Try reflashing CWM v4.0.0.2 via ODIN and check if its recognizing the said zips.
2. Place the zips in a folder inside the internal sdcard and try.

Duplicate thread.
Check. here
Flash ardatdats kernel v4 or higher (download it from here) and youll be done.
And if CWM Recovery is not recognizing zip files..
Dont put it in a FOLDER like
/sdcard/xyz folder/abcd.zip
Put it like
sdcard/abcd.zip
i.e. Directly in the basic folder of sdcard..
NOT in any folder like bluetooth, clockworkmod, android,DCIM etc.
This might solve your issue mate

I managed to get to the stock recovery back from cwm.....thanx to @eoh7678
But now I want to get access to the recovery "menu". I get into the recovery and end up at the android logo with a " ! "
I tried some key combinations but didn't help.
Please help me, thanks
The stock recovery does not have a menu. The only thing it can do is flash a stock firmware file loaded to the root of your internal storage (or external after renaming it). So what you are seeing is perfectly normal.
What are you trying to accomplish and how?

Actually I want to update it from stock 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I have downloaded the update file from asus website but I don't know how to update it now. Can you please explain me properly? I have copied the update file in /cache. I made a file named command in /cache/recovery
and in that file I inserted "--update_package=/cache/<the update filename> .zip " and saved the file and then booted into recovery.
Nothing happened, the device did not update.
And then I again booted into the OS and found that the "command" file no longer existed! I have tried this 3 times.

The file you downloaded is called something like bla_bla_UPDATELAUNCHER.zip.
Extraxt that zip once and you end up with another zip: bla_bla_user.zip
Take the user.zip and put it into the root level of internal storage. NOT into any folder, just alongside your Downloads, Pictures folders etc., so into /sdcard/
The system should automatically recognize the file and give you a notification. If it doesn't, reboot.
If still nothing happens you either have an incorrect file or read this:
