I work at at&t and can confirm the launch date, which isn't widely publicized yet, however I highly doubt the 4 gigs of ram.
Damn.... I don't know if its true or not ( i dont think it is) but if it is I'm sooo getting the AT&T version. Wow.
It only has 2 gig

Who honestly thinks any phone needs 4 gigs of ram? And why would 2 extra gigs of ram be any kind of selling point...

I remember people saying that about 2 gigs of ram.
How is it that the people that right these reviews can be so far off. Do they not have any pride in what they claim to know? It's almost like a microwave sales person trying to write a review about automobiles. I understand Samsung's dropping the ball on making information available, but that's no excuse for these so-called professions or enthusiasts publishing such crap. If it's true and the AT&T S4 has 4 Gigs of RAM (doubtful) then why is this the first it has been released? A lot of people that claim to be expert reviewers should be ashamed of themselves.

FYI ARM v7 doesn't even support more than 3 GB of RAM. It's 32 bit, wait for A57 to get to ARM v8 and 64 bit if you even want to see more than 2GB.
would be nice, if true. in one or two years, 4GB will be the standard.
BarryH_GEG said:
An even better question would be why would Samsung increase their own costs unnecessarily? The move to 2GB was because Adreno in S3 reserved 325MB of RAM for itself. And even then some manufacturers didn't move up to 2GB for their S3-based phones. The i9505 has over 1GB free which based on the way Android manages memory should be more than enough.

Above is the Octa available memory. PowerVR appears to be reserving 180MB of RAM for itself (2GB-180MB=1.82GB available). We know from the One that Adreno reserves 550MB for itself. So the S-600 version of the SGS4 should have 1.45GB available (2GB-550MB=1.45GB available). In the Octa example above core and system apps are using about 310MB of RAM. (1.82GB-310MB=1.51GB user available). So the S-600 version should have 1.14GB available (1.45GB-310MB=1.14GB). 1GB+ free for the OS and multitasking should be fine.
And the N2 (below) has more S-Crap on it than the SGS4 and runs fine with 1.14GB for the OS and apps.

barry you got it totally wrong on the above post, its actually 310mb free memory available the rest 1.5gb is being used. Also i dont think the unavailable memory is being allotedd for graphics it should have its own memory. The unavailable memory is shared among various hardware parts.

8gb ram is a must nowadays!
4gb ram in a phone? Holy crap this phone will fly!
Off topic but does anyone know if bestbuy will be doing at&t preorders on tuesday as well? The 26th launch date is fine by me.
this is not going to happen for now, so we can ignore this crap

Already been stated how this is known not to happen...we have 32bit devices...just like in actual computers 32bit does not support anything above 2gb. Until we get a 64bit phone we won't see anything above 2gb ram in a phone.
And to your other post saying 4gb ram is going to make the phone faster....keep in mind ram does not increase speed. Ram helps multi tasking...all ram does is prevent system slowdowns from occurring due to to many tasks running.

Hello,
Can anyone please explain the situation.
There are only 345 MB of total ram available.
Is this same for you all Nexus S owners too? Shouldn't it be 512 MB?
I'm using CM7 Nightly #18.
I noticed this before, but I didn't care about it. However an explanation could be better.

I think the additional ram is fornthe OS. The 345 is what is available for apps.
the others 177 mb are for the gpu
reserved for gpu
The other RAM is used for the system, graphics, the drivers to run, the launcher, etc.
Hm ok. Thank you all.

Now, I'm not up and up enough on the technical names for processors etc. to say that those aren't the same but to my eyes there is clearly a difference. Not to mention the lack of a cell radio in the Galaxy Tab rendering it not a phone.
Different hardware has different requirements for memory.

People who don't root in the U.S. can't use it as a "phone."
A tablet is a tablet, even if it can make and receive calls, its not a phone.
In this case, I might as well call my computer a "phone" because I can make calls via Google Mail Voice.

There could be a range of different factors that can make that happen.
1. The amount of gpu reserved memory is set as a boot kernel parameter. So the galaxy could have less memory reserved for the gpu.
2. The galaxy could have dedicated gpu ram, instead of shared from the main memory. That's the best guess, since it's a bigger device with more room for hardware components.
3. Could also have less reserved memory at boot and the drivers/libs could use some of the user space memory.
The list go on.

Actually, no, he didn't. He is in fact not the OP of this thread. A tablet is a tablet, not a phone. If it were a phone, they'd have called it a phone. 'A rose by any other name..' Call it a phone, it's still a tablet. This thread is about RAM and there not being 512mb as per usual. I've learned my lesson about throwing out unnecessary insults, perhaps you would do well to learn the same?

I guess it depends on how you use the device. I have my old android device that I use at home for music (sort of a designated mp3 player) and a tablet for watching full length movies and reading for long periods.. both of them have expandable microSD. I was also tempted to get a 32gb for the sake of having more than enough... But, I realized the 16gb is perfect for people with my habits... using cloud storage for many work files.. and using google play to stream my music library.. or even using Songza. I found that I have 7gb or more left. Unless I stuff it with mp3s or full length movies.. I really do not need more storage. Also, I do want to add that I do not play much video games that require 1 gb+ of storage. I get bored of games way too easily and do not have time for them.
Of course, if I did not have the tablet's microSD to use for media consumption at home, I may think differently about the storage limit. So it boils down to how you plan to use the device.... is it your main source of entertainment (locally stored movies, music and gaming)? Or, is it designated largely for work and outside use... while you rely on other devices while at home?
Also, if $50 is not a big factor... Go for the big one so you do not have to worry if your habits change in the future. For me, it would have been overkill. In fact, I had an HTC One that had 20gb free at all times.. so it helped in my decision.
Don't agree that the 16gb is not big enough on storage I've got all my music and apps and still have over 6gb left so its just a myth these days with all the cloud storage and Google's own built in storage I have a 32gb ip5 and its got all my music plus films and its still got 12gb so I think 16 GB is plenty IMO the 8gb n4 was a little to small but that's gone. Love my N5
Sent from my Nexus 5 using xda app-developers app
If the N5 is my own mobile device, then maybe 16GB isn't enough going forward for the next 2 or 3 years when offline & cloud storage aren't available. I managed 2 HTC's with external mSD cards, a 8MB and a 16MB - both are fine for what it's used for - unless you store lots of mp4's and ripped dvd's on it to watch. Easy solution - rooted N5, Stickmount and 32MB USB (external) drive for DVD playbacks.
At the moment, my 16GB is doing just fine - 12.55 GB total space with 1.25 GB used for about 70+ apps installed, 2.5GB for most recent TWRP & TB backups stored on the device (rest is archived securely offline) and about 1GB worth of MP3's (that's about 30+ hours of playing time, enough for flying nonstop to Asia & back in the unlikely event that IFE on those 777's aren't working) and some photos - leaving about 7GB free and that's plentiful.
When we travel, the Nexus 7 (32GB model) is nearly almost alongside and it has about 13GB free - as companion to the N5 or vice versa - I would be worried more about running out of power than anything else, IMO - same capacity as Mrs. L's iPad2 whereas SIL's tablet only has 16GB & is running just fine. I have gotten into the habit of moving & storing zip files & roms, etc. for development purposes offline on the desktop - and, not to leave everything on any mobile device, in the unlikely event it is damaged, lost or stolen, etc. etc.
End of my generalization, YMMV - of course.
Thanks

I wouldn't say more powerful, but I think that now they are pair to pair with Snapdragon, and that's really good.
I remember when Exynos was crap, but from 2 years to now, it has become a really nice processor as well.
It is said that the GPU on the Mate 9 (G71) is the same that will incorporate the new Galaxy S8, according to rumors.

CPU wise it is indeed more powerful and efficient. Kryo cores are not better than ARM Cortex A57 cores, source from Anandtech.
And in the GPU department we have to wait for the updated drivers that should increase the performance over the Adreno 530 as Huawei show in the Kirin 960 presentation ( they have been really honest about their SOCs info until now in the good and the bad things ). But we will have to see, at the moment it is quite good.

Is this accurate? Single SIM is Euro version, dual SIM is INT, and Chinese version is 128/6 GB?
I ordered White 128/6 GB version from Oppomart and elsewhere in this forum Oppomart has been quoted as saying thiers are INT versions. Just wondering as I don't want to get one of these Chines variants that cannot run Google Play. My understanding is INT, and maybe Euro, versions are fine with Google Play but the Chinese versions are a hassle to rollback firmware to version that will allow Google Play.

I have a Samsung EVO 256 GB Micro SD. Will it work? Different sources tell me different things, the huawei website says only up to 128 gb, but maybe someone has found that 256 gb works for a certain rom?
Also, not sure if it matters, but I am in the USA and would be purchasing from Bestbuy.
only 128gb

256gb won't work in that phone, it supports only 128gb
It should
Gsmareana says otherwise and so do some reviews. The honor 8 should support it considering it uses the same filing system.
I've seen reports of people using 256GB working, but was told going 256GB could hurt the card's longevity.
Is this from mine, but I have a US model.. Don't know if it makes a difference.

So 256 GB is working without any workaround ?
Why would someone want a 256gb card?
Movies - screen too small
Uncompressed music - dac not good enough
RAW shooting - 128gb is more than enough
4K shooting - not available
Also 256gb card isn't affected in its longevity.
I got it for free from Samsung. 32 gb isn't enough for me, and it'd be nice if I don't have to go out and buy another one.
Anyone have any thoughts on why Huawei lists it as 128gb limit for expandable storage?

If I had had any 256Gb card around me I would try it for you but unfortunatelly I hadn't. I see there are different oppinions about this case but nothing certain.
If this is the only thing keeping back you from this phone than I can't help but since it is not such a big deal to buy a 64-128GB on ebay/aliexpress (and even you can sell yours) and I would buy the phone.
(I think it would work but I wasn't the guy giving the specifications at Honor).

You don't know how many files other people keep. If I had that much space in SD, I would've used 200 of it.

True. But it has to be an exception. Regular Joe doesn't need that much. Even an enthusiast user.
For the card just format extFAT in the PC and put it in the phone. It won't break anything. The worst it might happen is the sdcard not being recognized.

In an other thrad there is a user who has a 256Gb card in his phone. So it seem to be working but I would highly recommend asking him in PM which version of the phone he is using. Link
256GB should work, if it's anything like other phones with 128GB limit. As far as I'm aware, manufacturers only normally test and approve up until 128GB, but it will most likely work.
On another note, I wish the 64GB version was available in Europe!

So why did they put a 128GB limit if 256 will work just fine?
Sent from my honor 5X using XDA Labs
How long have the 256GB cards been available in the micro form factor now? (It doesn't seem like it was that long ago that the biggest was 200GB...for some reason?) I'd guess either 256GB cards weren't available or Honor just didn't put some through the validation process. They still come at quite a price premium over 128GB cards, so that was almost certainly worse a year ago.
I'm using the 256 gb card and it is working fine

The 64gig is available in Europe. Its called honor 8 premium and comes only in gold. (FRD-L19). I paid about 25-30€ more for the premium version in Hungary.
