Phone stuck in boot after downgrade to CM10.0 from CM10.1, cannot connect USB - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I did a Cyanogen update from 10.0.0 to 10.1 (experimental M2) via updater - the rom was very buggy so I decided to downgrade to 10.0.0 again via updater. I guess I shouldn't have done it this way, because now the phone is stuck in boot mode.
I did boot in bootloader via volumeup/power button combination. Phone was already unlocked.
I noticed that at the bottom of the scren the following lines appeared when connecting to USB cable
USB Control Init
USB Control Init End
STANDARD SET CONFIGURATION
and then right below in light gray:
FASTBOOT STATUS - FAILINvalid id Command
at this time PDANet (I have Win7 and Pdanet 4.x) says "connecting device..." and that's it
I went into recovery (via ClockWorkMod) and selected "mounts and storage"
I select "mount USB storage" (PDANet is still running on my pc)
now I should see the USB storage on my pc, but nothing happens... PDANet says please start PDANet on your phone and enable USB Tether mode...
At this point I am a bit lost... The Nexus device shows in Windows devices and printers list as a device.
But I can't see the storage anywhere. I desperately need to connect via USB in order to put a rom to install on my device.
Did try to disconnect/reconnect the usb cable, remove battery, restart, to no avial... I just can't get to USB storage through my computer
Any clues? Thanks!

I think you messed up the storage somehow... Can you try flashing factory images?
There is a Nexus toolkit available which automates everything...

Well I think this had something to do the way 4.2.2 changed something in folders structure. I've read that somewhere on XDA forums.
I solved it by this way. The downloaded 10.0.0 and 10.1 were still in my sdcard storage which could be read from CWM. Therefore I attempted first to write again the 10.0.0 but again it was stuck into boot. I flashed 10.1 and it was working again of course with 10.1. At that point the USB started working again too, from inside Android or from recovery.
I was thinking to wipe everything, but then I learned that the bugs and crashes with 10.1 were mostly related with GAPPS that needed to be reinstalled with the proper package - but not just that also Google Apps from Play Store (I didn't realize about the latter). Further crashes could be fixed by just uninstalling an app and reinstalling or clearing its cache. That's how I got 10.1 working fine for now and so I decided to leave it there.
I'm not sure if the problem I encountered at the beginning, with the USB storage not working from CWM could be fixed in some way. In case you 're reading this and are in the same situation I'd recommend to wipe everything or reinstall 10.1 from CWM if you downgraded from it earlier.

I do that if i get into trouble anytime.
I suggest you try SlimBean as compared to CM 10.1. I think CM is too heavy and NS cannot handle that much.
I've been a SlimBean user since the day I got my phone and never looked back...

ah yeah was looking into it... does it run 4.2.2?
I agree the Google Nexus is old and there's a good reason why even Google stopped supporting updates for it, with ICS became too slow, since ICS is more demanding
installing CM was my first attempt at rooting and changing ROM
which path would you recommend me to switch to SlimBean? Just wipe everything from CWM then proceed to install SB? Or use CWM Rom Manager + Carbon to backup apps and configuration? (I never tried those)
the reason is that I'm a bit worried of that USB problem... If I had no ROM on my sdcard space to flash from CWM I think I'd have my phone bricked...
thanks!

SlimBean runs 4.2.2 and Build 3 is the current one which has lots of tweaks in it.
I have always used a Nandroid backup coupled with Nandroid Manager to extract any apps or data from it. Fortunately I never have ever faced any problem with installing a custom ROM.
I've never used ROM Manager too.
I suggest take a Nandroid backup, wipe everything from CWM and flash the ROM. (Rom then Gapps and then Extras)...you can go back to CM from Nandroid backup by just restoring it....

I just installed it. Great ROM I like it. Appreciate the dpi settings (although I think I will revert to factory default, it's too tiny for my eyes).
I noticed thought that for some reason if I log into Play Store from my desktop it says I don't have any devices and doesn't let me anymore install/purchase apps, while from the Nexus I can still install/update etc. Do you know what could be the reason?
thanks

ah forget about the Play Store problem, it was just a sync issue, I fixed it
again great ROM, I'm recommending it to friends who own a Nexus S
thank you!

Glad I could help you out... Keep exploring...

This ROM is really amazing, forgive me if I bother you with yet another question.
I've had it now for 24hr and my phone seems as snappy as it was with gingerbread (for which it was designed for) yet with all the features of 4.2.2. Everything is smooth and the battery is excellent so far.
I've found though a minor glitch since switching to Slimbean. The colour calibration seems a bit off. Initially, when released years ago, the Nexus S display had a tendency to be a bit cool. At the time, while still on Gingerbread, Google released an update to make the tones a bit more warm. And that adjusted setting was kept all the way until 4.1.2; with CM 10 or 10.1 I didn't notice a change. With Slimbean though it's back to the cool setting. It's not really an annoying thing, probably a matter of habit. But I do believe that the current settings in SB are slightly too cool. I did some research on colour calibration apps for Android; I couldn't find reliable apps, most people seem suggesting to use a specific kernel to do this.
Since you have the same phone and the same ROM, what's your opinion on this?
thanks

can't do factory reset or start the tablet

Hello, I've got a problem and I'd be very happy for any advice.
I am on rom JellyBean AOSP. I was using my Transformer and sound stopped working. So I decided to turn it off and on again and when I tried to turn it on and I wasn't able to start tablet anymore. I'm stuck on the first screen you see when you turn on the tablet. So I wanted to do factory reset in the recovery. In recovery everything works allright. When I click on the factory reset it says error when deleting something in /data/ and I also can't do "Format /data/" because of the same error.
Here is the log from recovery - https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3045404/recovery.log
How can I completely delete /data/ can I do it somehow from PC for example? I don't care about my data I can lose everything. I just want to get it work. I also tried to flash AOSP JellyBean ROM again, but with the same effect. I think that tablet just can't do the factory reset but I don't know why. Thanks for any advice.
Hi there !
I think you should try to start your tablet into ADB mode, connect it to your computer and use the "adb shell" command. If your tablet was rooted, then you might be able to use the "su" command, but that depends also on your settings (I mean your Android settings... those you can't change anymore ).
Another way to get your TF101 working again is to use the NVflash "unbrick pack". OK, you'll be running the stock non-rooted ROM, but you'll be able to root it again and install a new fresh copy of your Android AOSP. I'm going to search for a link to this nvflash and I'll post it asap.
By the way, were you using the AOSP "alpha" from RaymanFX ?
EDIT : NVflash unbrick pack is here, and you also might want to try with EasyFlasher !
Thanks, I'll try it. Yes, I've been using alpha from RaymanFX. I haven't done anything that could "brick" my device while using the tablet before I turned it off.
This is what tablet shows after I attempt to do a factory reset. https://dl.dropbox.com/u/3045404/DSC05813.JPG

That's weird. And you're using an old CWM Recovery
I think in most CWM versions there's a "fix permissions" item, you could try this one first. Im' not sure of what it exactly does, but it might do the trick: a permission-related problem seems (to me) a good reason for displaying this kind of errors...
yeah I also tried fix permissions but didn't help. I also remembered that it sometimes freezes even in the recovery. Is it safe to flash a new recovery NOW when I'm not able to startup the tablet? Please could you link me to the best recovery that I should flash? thanks a lot. I'm careful about it and I don't want to do something that would brick my device.
I dunno if it is the best recovery, but I prefer to use the CWM Recovery.
You'll find the 6.x series here.
I actually use the 6.x on my Sony Xperia Ray.
On my TF101, I use this touch Rogue recovery, not as recent as the first one. In fact I never did the update 'cause I'm waiting for the next release of RaymanFX's CM10 release to flash everything
EDIT: And I think you can flash a new recovery safely, because it's not on the same partition as the Android system. And in the case it fails, you should be able to boot in ADB mode and use the NVflash unbrick pack to get your device up and running !
oh god thank you so much. New recovery helped a lot it did factory reset and everything works allright. I would like to ask you one more question. what's in your opinion best rom for Transformer? I just want it to be stable. Because I don't like freezing every day and slow motion through tablet. I tried many roms but it was always unreliable. Thank you )
Great !
About the ROM s, one told me that Revolver is a great one, but I never used it.
I never had problems with CyanogenMod 9. I would recommend that one !
For now I'm running RaymanFX's CM10 build, which is great too !

Root/Install ROM first time - I think I screwed up.

The basic deal is I got bored of the software and decided that I should root an install some custom ROMs on my Nexus S.
I used the One click method posted I believe in the general forum and everything went smoothly. I downloaded the latest AOKP and CM zips, put them onto my phones memory and went on with my day.
So today I began to put on the AOKP ROM and it got stuck at the initiating swagger screen. And was stuck there for a good 20minutes. I didn't know what to do, so I battery pulled.
I thought I had some backup saved from the day before, but that wasn't the case. So now I'm essentially stuck in thee boot menu for clockwork and my phone has been rendered useless. If any of you guys know what I should do, please tell, I'm extremely pissed off at myself for letting this happen.
I deleted the Cache partition and Dalvik thing when I was first getting ready to put on the ROM. I didn't to a factory wipe, so that might be an issue? I don't know. I've also tried plugging the phone into my computer, but because I cant turn on USB mass storage, I can't look through that either.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi,
If ur in the bootloader screen scroll down until u see recovery. Then press the power button.
From recovery scroll down to mounts and storage to connect to computer via USB.
From here u have a few options bjt i would just download another ROM and its gapps or a ROM that already contains them.
Just be careful to get the correct zips for ur type of phone
Good luck

Wow. Thanks a lot. Do you think I should do a factory reset before I install a new rom?
EDIT: Hey vidaljs, thanks for the help! I got the CM10 ROM up and running, apparently I was running some really old version! That USB mount thing really helped!!

No worries
Next thing u should do is make a backup of this working ROM so u can always go back to it in a pinch.
And always follow what the developers suggest in their thread since they created it.
But when I go to a new ROM, I always do a factory reset, wipe cache and wipe Dalvic.
If u haven't found it yet, use titanium backup for ur apps so its easier to apply them to ur newly flashed ROM. The free version is fine but I've heard that paid version has some extra useful benefits.
Good luck and happy flashing.

Almost same stroy, I tried to Root & install Cyanomodgen 10 on my Nexus S, but boot isn't working quite well, and I'm stuck at a circling image preparing the launch.
Recovery isn't working I got stuck at the image with the robot and the back and the exclamation mark on top of it and like 5 minutes later it launch the cyanomodgen ring again - and can't get in download mode.
I pretty don't get what I should do.
Any idea?
I feel I lack some info on my problem, I'll create a fresh post for it

[Guide] How to get CM10.1 properly working on Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy S3

NOTE: This is for the Verizon Wireless Samsung Galaxy S3 SCH-I535
Since I'm a new member I wasn't allowed to post this into the developers forum and before I continue: YES, I have searched valiantly for a fix to my particular problem and I spent the entire day new years and most of the day today trying to get CM10.1 to run on my SCH-I535 but ran into problem after problem. Every time I installed any version of CM10 or higher I ran into multiple problems: mainly being that I wasn't able to attain signal, the keyboard wouldn't load or there would be multiple problems with initial setup including having to restart during install so many times I gave up. In the past two days I have Odined back to stock at least 15+ times trying to get CM to run and now that it finally is I believe this is worth sharing.
Before I continue I should mention that your phone should be properly working so if you're in stock and you can't make phone calls or your IMEI is messed up then none of what I'm about to mention is going to work. After you Odin to stock using Root66.tar (http://www.megashare.com/4384479) then type *2767*3855# to reset to factory defaults everything should be running correctly. If not you may have bricked your phone or you have bigger problems for which I cannot help you and I apologize. There's also a torrent file available of the above stock tar file that downloads much faster here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840030.
So I assume, before I start this, that if you're on these boards you know how to properly root, unlock and flash then recover your phone through CWM 6+. If you do not know how to do this, then you will need to before continuing on.
Use this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1762709
Now follow Section 1 and pay attention to detail because if you don't you can mess something up and end up having to backtrack which can take valuable time and be amazingly frustrating.
Once these things are done you will need to reboot your phone back out of Recovery mode so you can properly move the necessary zip files onto your internal SD card.
Download CM10 Stable, you can find this here: http://get.cm/?device=d2vzw&type=stable
And download Gapps 4.2.1 here: http://www.teamandroid.com/gapps/ (I used version gapps-jb-20121212-signed.zip)
Put these files on your internal SD card and use EZ Recovery to Flash and then Reboot Recovery, I need to mention as well that when I dragged both of these zip files onto my internal SD I had EZ Recovery open while doing so. I don't know if that had anything to do with it but I thought it was worth mentioning. Clear the cache and data/factory reset then install CM10 followed by Gapps that you installed on the SD earlier.
Once you boot up you should have the phone working but the keyboard will constantly flash a message that it can't run, don't worry about that right now. Now download a nightly version of CM10.1 located here:http://get.cm/?device=d2vzw&type=nightly
(I used cm-10.1-20121231-NIGHTLY-d2vzw.zip)
Now put this on your internal SD card as well and hold the power button for 2 seconds and press restart then select recovery. Now that you're back into the recovery menu CLEAR ONLY CACHE then install the new CM10.1 nightly you just put on your internal SD and then re-install Gapps 4.2.1 from before and reboot. This all worked for me and writing this message is the first thing I wanted to do afterward to make sure no one has to go through the frustration and heartache of constantly failing at installing the ROM they want. I hope this helps at least one person, if you have any questions I will try and answer them to the best of my knowledge but I'm fairly new to all of this.
Or you can just flash CM10.1 first and do this.......

Dirty flashing CM10.1 over CM10 is a much longer way then just clicking a couple buttons Its simply the fact that CM10.1 doesnt have the correct cdma subscription on default boot for our phone.

I have everything working properly now but I wish I would've known this was the matter that would've fixed my problem without all these extra issues. Now my phone app is crashing in the 12-31-12 version of CM10.1. It just suddenly started happening and I can't seem to get around it.

What are the correct settings?
I have been doing this a while... and I was already on the 10.0 stable build. So I flashed the 10.1 nightly... Now Play Store closes immediately after opening. I have tried to uninstall and install from .apk without success. CWRM opens and closes immediately , also uninstalled and reinstalled from .apk without success (You can get to it from booting to it with the phone off ). My Gmail app and account nowhere to be found. My attempt to go back to 10.0 were unsuccessful.

[Q] Problems with most Roms

I am unlocked and have the recovery of twrp 2.3.3.0. I'm having problems with about every single rom I flash. I wipe everything as you are suppose to and the flash appears to go well but usually right away after the rom boots up the system becomes unresponsive. I have to hold my finger over a button for a couple seconds for it to acknowledge a touch and things just don"t run right.
Its like either the system is almost locked up or the touchscreen just hardly works.... one of the two. I made a backup of my original asus setup and if I restore it the tablet works just fine. I've tried hydro, cm 10.1, blackbean 7, and one or two I'm forgetting. AOKP RC1 is the only custom rom that gives me no problems at all in this regard, unfortunately its an unfinished rom, no camera and my battery dies like crazy with it...
The 2nd best running rom that I really like from what I have seen is blackbean 7. Runs great for first few minutes but after playing a game for a bit or doing some other things and having it run just great all the sudden the dreaded problem occurs and the only fix is a reboot for it to work for a while longer. So frustrated at this point as I have flashed so many roms and resetup so many things just to find myself doing it again trying to fix this and find a rom that works for me.
Any ideas at all on what could do this? Is the difference in the kernels the reason why AOKP RC1 and Asus original work but none of the others? Or does it have to do with my recovery? Fairly certain I have the correct most recommended one with twrp 2.3.3.0 and the process went fine. Any ideas greatly appreciated. I really just want to be able to run blackbean. And knowing that most all roms will not work for me is rather disturbing in regards to the future. Really wanting to like my new tf300t but its making it hard:silly:
Try to downgrade your recovery.
Use this : openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-tf300t-JB.blob
and take a feedback after, thanks
I really appreciate that you took the time to give me something to try but I'm afraid it didn't work. Process went fine I'm on 2.3.1.0 twrp but same problem. First rom I've tried instant non-responsive. Any other ideas?
I've been using ClockWorkMod Recovery on my TF300T, and it's been great. (Used it to upgrade my ROM to CM 10.1.) No issues at all.
If you need instructions for getting it installed on a TF300T, check out my second-to-last post on thoughtsontechnology.com. (NONE of the work is mine, I just compiled the instructions and links in one spot for easier access. Most of the work came from XDA contributors, they've been really great.)
Most roms need 5 to 10 mins to stabilize after a new install, usually as they are building media storage files, etc. Are you giving them enough time?
Failing that I can only think your microsd has something corrupt on it. Boot with it out.
Well I tried cwm again flashed it no problem installed rom no problem but no fix. So guess we have established it definitely isn't the recovery at this point...
Yes I've given roms several reboots and lots of suffering them working for 10min to only fail again for another reboot... So its not that. Still the only Rom that will work is my backup of the original asus and the AOKP RC1. Trying it without the external sdcard right now.
Well no joy on the removal of the external sdcard
Have you tried a full wipe before installing? You must have some thing on the data partition causing this. I

Not sure what a full wipe is? I wipe cache/dalvik system format data and have even tried formatting the sdcard once several roms ago. One thing I have noticed since I am trying so many roms all the time is the sdcard file structure seems odd as I have at the root of the sdcard a 0 directory that continues to be added to. Currently it goes sdcard/0/0/0/0 to actually get to where I have things stored like music, downloads. Is this normal? Its strangely repetitive.
Personally I think you should stop using TWRP if you're having all these issues. Just flash CWM and have fun

This thread is a couple months old, but i am having the same problem. After installing a lot of different roms, both stock based and cm/AOKP. I let the rom stabilize and after a few hours or even minutes the touch screen has a mind of its own. It lags, double touches or fails to respond at all. I m on twrp 2.4.1.0. Was this issue ever resolved? Should I try old version recovery or cwm? I restored rooted stock us10.4.2.20 and the issue is gone. Is it possible that installing a rom changed the touch screen firmware? I am open to suggestions as I have spent alot of time on this with no luck. Thanks!
What version CWM would u suggest as this is probably my next move?

Sounds like you have a hardware fault if the issue persists across multiple firmwares.
Also, OP said his SD card directory structure was strange. I'd format both internal and external SD in recovery (in addition to wiping and factory reset) before you flash.
Thanks! Wiping internal has seemed to do the job. Still would like to know what the issue was. I was thinking it was the touch panel firmware, but thought that would be in /system

You mean to say you cannot boot into CWM recovery and flash a different ROM? Interesting. I have an HTC, and the steps to rooting it are in a different order... that after unlocking the bootloader, you install CWM, and then optionally root the stock ROM with the SuperUser package (those who don't do the last step are usually flashing a ROM instead of mucking around for another second with the stock OS).
SU shouldn't be needed for custom recovery. But maybe Chameleon does something weird like not give you a custom recovery you can boot into? If that's the case, you could pop the device into download mode and go back to stock with Odin, effectively starting from scratch.
still need help, thank you.
I am starting to believe more than before that the actual problem is that somehow my phone got unrooted. How do I set my phone in download mode and use Odin? I usually wipe the cache, install the rom, install gapps, wipe cache partition, and wipe dalvik cache. I have never flashed a rom before. Or even better what is the best way to root my phone again now that I am using chameleon? I believe if I can do that it will fix my problems and I can install cyanfox (the latest rom I have downloaded). Do I use super one click? That is what I think I used before but now that I am not using stock rom I don't know what to use.

If you are unable to get into ClockWorkMod recovery (hold Vol-Up+Vol-Dn keys while pressing Pwr button) and have it do anything (so your wipe, install, gapps, dalvik - that process would be called flashing). Then I would Odin back to stock.
For this, you would need to get into download mode. IIRC (just sold my Infuse), it is (with the device fully turned off) hold both volume buttons in while inserting the micro usb cable (that is subsequently inserted into your PC). The ODIN program comes with the download packages (hopefully), so extract the whole package, and run that.
Odin should pick up the phone in the first column as "COMX" (e.g. "COM5"). You are good to flash. To the right, there are PHONE and PDA buttons, click on each, and select the corresponding file (that was also in the package) for each (so PHONE will have something like PHONE.tgz.md5). Once both files are loaded, make sure re-partition is UN-checked, and press Start (or Go, or whatever the action word is). This will take a few minutes, but the COMX column should highlight green with "SUCCESS" in the end.
That's all there is to it. The reason why I'm shying away from SuperOneClick is that it was designed for stock gingerbread/froyo, so it has the potential of breaking something. Hope this helps.
EDIT:
Alternatively, you could try pushing su to the device with adb (depends on how you lost root):
Code:
adb shell mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system /system
adb push su /system/xbin/
adb shell chmod 06755 /system/xbin/su
... with this file (extracted).

new problem
I am now running cyanfox which runs android 4.4 and Google.process.gapps has stopped keeps popping up. To get rid of it I have to do a factory reset but after a few days it always comes back. I have Googled the problem and tried numerous things to try to fix it but everything only works temporary. What should I do besides get another phone? I can't afford that right now.

I wouldn;t suggest another phoen is things are working well genrally. The problem could lie in the GApps package or the ROM itself. I use the PA Gapps package. If you are having rouble with that one, try from a different date. Just wipe dlavik in between to prevent any nastyness.
If it still persists, try another ROM, like Carbon.
tried installing the new gapps
So far, so good but I won't know for sure for a few days. I'll keep you up to date. Thank you
what version of android is carbon?
Do you have the link for carbon rom for Samsung infuse 4g? And what version of android is it? My phone runs better with those gapps but I am still getting the same problems. I will give it a try but if carbon doesn't work I am definitely going to have to just get another phone. So far I'm. 0-2 on custom roms for this phone. I thought cyanfox would of worked cause I got it off of xda, which really makes me think this phone has some sort of hardware problem but carbon has been around longer. So maybe it will work better.
Carbon is on XDA as well too, and it is based on CM 11 / Android 4.4 Kitkat:

Hope this works for you... :fingers-crossed:
problems solved
It appears it was definitely a problem with the ROM. Phone has been operating 100% better. :victory: My cache needs to be cleared frequently and some minor problems with the Facebook back but when isn't there problems with Facebook lol. But as soon as I clean out the cache from my apps, everything is running like new again. I greatly appreciate your help. I can't thank you enough.
Was working great then more problems
Joel,
Carbon was running great for me but then all of a sudden android.process.acore has stopped kept popping up along with all sort of other things stopping then eventually GApps not working again. I have erased my contacts, Erased Media, unchecked all my Syncs, I have tried all sorts of other Gapps packages and even another ROM (cyanogen 11) and they work to begin with then the same problems keep coming back. Is it because I went from Gingerbread right to Kitkat? My phone hasn't worked for about a week now with me trying all different ways to fix it. Do I need to install Ice Cream Sandwich then Jellybean before going to Kitkat or do I just need to try even more GApps? I used to install new ROMs all the time but android has changed so much over the last couple years and when i had to get rid of my old phone and went back to my Infuse 4g the old ROM was just completely outdated and now I can't seem to get this right. The phone itself is still a great phone and I don't understand why I am having these issues. I factory reset, wipe cache, wipe dalvik, install new ROM, install GApps, wipe cache again, and wipe dalvik again. I usually don't wipe the cache or the dalvik until after the ROM and GApps install but just lately have been doing the extra wipe just in-case because nothing else is working. But that has failed too. You have been a great help so far and I can't seem to fix this on my own, so again I turn to you for help. Please help me figure this out.

It's possible. I mentioned this before somewhere, but this could be the after-effect of a small /datadata partition, which having a separate partition is standard in a KitKat ROM (at least for this phone). When it fills up, there's no telling what happens.
Both BeanStalk and CM11 have /datadata partition alternatives (the separate partition has been abandoned) built in. You may want to try one of those:

Unfortunately I couldn't find something similar for Carbon.
Thank you!!!!!!
I hate to count my chickens before they're hatched but I truly believe that was the problem. Even Facebook works now. But I thought I had it fixed before then just under a week and it completely messed up and I couldn't even get it to work for a day after that. But it works now. I can't thank you enough. If you ever come across one for Carbon ROM please let me know. This is a good ROM but I liked Carbon better. Again, thank you Joel. :good::good:
Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry to bother you again Joel but I have a major problem again and I dont even know wht happenned. You have helped me through evrything so far and I couldn't be more thankful. There may be nothing you can do to help me, I don't know. I was using my phone as A Wifi Hotspot when out of know where as soon as i got on facebook on my tablet my phone rebooted on it's own into Clockworkmod recovery. when I reboot it, it goes right back into recovery, it wont read the internal sd card and it wont install any zip off any inserted sd card(it reads them but wont install anything, it always pops up with android guy on his back with a red X and a generic error). it lets me erase cache but won't erase delvik cache or format anything, the screen just flashes and it pops back a screen. I dont think the phone overheated because it wasnt hot to the touch at all. I was only using it as a wifi hotspot for about 30 minutes when it happenned. i had used it as a hotspot many times before with no problems and i dont know how it woud be a virus when i wasnt on any abnormal sites. Any help you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

If you can get into Download Mode, I would Odin back to stock. Are you AT&T or Rogers? There are a couple recent threads in this forum with download links, although people have been having difficulties with finding the AT&T variety.
Unfortunately, that's all I can recommend. Good luck.
we'll see how this works out
I just checked and it will go into download mode. So I guess I just need to find the AT&T thread of Oden and hopefully that works. I have never done it that way before but I read your previous response much earlier in this thread on how to do it and it sounds pretty simple so hopefully I can do it. If you can find a link to the at&t version before me it would definitely help but I will see what I can find.

Looks like you are all set for the files then.
I just PM'ed everyone who I've recommended those packages in the past. Hopefully I get a bite.
found a thread but need your help
I found a thread with links but with what is written on this thread I am confused. The thread link is
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1613523
I'm not sure what to download and if anything needs to be changed after downloading it or if this link is a waste of my time. I was hoping you could help. Thanks.

I would recommend Option D for what you need, but AFAIK, the links on this page are dead.
If you go to the last page though, there is a link for Option C, which would work for your needs. Hope this helps.
