Hello, I want to do a complete wipe or factory reset on my device, it is rooted and I have CROMI on it, I have done a Backup with twrp and titanium app and Asus official back up app on a external sd card. the reason I want to do this is that my hdmi doesnt work and my docking station wont let me write anything anywhere, I have explored the internet and discussed the issues with the nice people on xda developers so this is my last resort before I send it to asus (apparently according to their support line they will fix it if there is a hardware issue even if it is rooted and customized)
Anyhow I want to do this right so can anyone give me a guide on how to completly do a factory reset, or atleast wipe as much of the data as possible.
thx

To do factory reset -> settings -> backup and recovery - factory reset
BTW, the full Asus firmware 4.2.1 has been released on Asus web site, you should download, then unzip the file then copy the unzipped file to the root of your sdcard and you should received a notification to upgrade and do so.
If all the above not working then you should return/exchange your device.

sorry if this is asked before but can i do a factory reset in the settings if i have root? or would i have to unroot before doing the factory reset. is there a easier method to wipe all data?
I want to know the answer too. If you only did a pure root, what happens when you do a security wipe? Will it retain the root, or will it resets Tf back to factory (unrooted)?
can anyone help us out?
I too would like to know the answer.
My transformer is a bit cluttered and takes ages to boot, so I would like to factory reset.
I have searched for ages on the net, but I can't find a definitive answer.
My transformer did the latest OTA uk.
Any help much appreciated.
guys root is contained in the system partition which is not touched. in factory reset data is touched.
if you use the new root method nachoroot then you may need to reinstall superuser from market.

I can tell you that if you boot in to hBoot and do a factory reset you will not lose SU access. I'd done it my self. I made the mistake of trying to do the factory OTA on a device with CWRI. So i just wiped it and reboot like a "new" unit and still had SuperUser.
did you only root your device and keep it completely stock?
Or did you install Clockwork Mod Recovery as well?
My personal opinion is that if you root you should install a custom recovery especially with how easy it is on the transformer. This has many benefits, with few if any bad consequences, i suppose it will require extra steps to go back to stock, but unless you need to send it in to be repaired under warranty theres not much reason to go back to stock(This is my opinion Only)
By installing a custom recovery you gain the ability to do a full backup anexact copy of the system and everything on it if you did that originally you would be able to go back to that point eliinating all the built up garbage. but you also gain the ability to do a full wipe and restore stock or custom firmware from scratch
Again my personal preference is a custom recovery and a custom firmware mine runs at least 10 times faster and more reliable than it was when i first got it. Just in the last 3 days i did a cmplete wipe myself as i was noticing alot of built up stuff and reloaded everything esily and am very satisfied.

One drawback (on stock rom) is that automatic OTA updates from Asus will fail. But there is an alternative to apply the OTA update.
If your rooted you really should have cwm recovery installed. If you have cwm recovery why not just boot into recovery and do a factory data reset
Hi guys,
I just bought the TF700T and I'm loving it. However, I find that restoring my tablet to my own specification after updating the device is a bit tiresome. Now the reason I'm doing the factory reset is because I read online that THAT'S what you're supposed to do after updating the device (if that's not the case, feel free to let me know). Regardless, I'm hoping that there's an app out there (paid is perfectly fine) that will restore my device to my original configuration after a factory reset. Things that I'd like it to do are as follows:
1) Automatically re-download all my Google Play apps. I have other android devices, so I'd need the app to remember which apps were installed on the Infinity, and then download them after the reset. Also remembering their custom settings would be nice, too!
2) Backup media folders that I designate
3) If possible, restore widgets that I had set previously (though not necessary).
Lastly, I don't have root access and don't really plan on doing it.
Thank you!
if you are on stock unrooted ice cream and are trying to go to stock unrooted JB then you shouldnt need to do a factory reset. it should DL the update over the air and then install over ICS while keeping all your apps and files as they are.
but if you facotry reset, it will all be gone. titanium backup will do what you need, only if you root.

Thanks for your reply. The only reason I'm doing factory resets is because of a "guide" that purports that doing so will ensure flawless update. I personally do not know for sure.

You should do a factory reset after you manually downgraded the firmware. If you just accept the OTA updates, you should never need to reset. Which "guide" was that?

Oops I can't post links yet, but it's over at the transformerforums. Just google "How to update your firmware OTA - incremental changes & full OS updates"
But if you say it's not necessary, then I won't do it. Too much of a hassle for me to reconfigure all of my apps over something as small as an OTA update.
Thanks!
I have unlocked, and loaded the latest version of CROMI-x on my Transformer. I like it but I have come across one problem. I have noticed that most of the keys at the top of my keyboard dock no longer function. They are (wifi, bluetooth, mousepad, any of the brightness settings, browser, settings, and mute). I do not believe that was the case before the upgrade but I am not sure. My questions are as follows:
1. Does anyone know of this as an issue? and if so, is there a solution?
2. To test this further, I would like to load the latest stock ROM onto the machine but before I do, I want to make sure I am doing things correctly so as to not brick the device. Can I simply download the stock ROM from somewhere (Do you know where?) and flash it the same way I did CROMI-x? Or is there something else I need to do first?
3. Is there a something I might of missed during the install of CROMI-x that might have solved this issue?
I also have a completely separate question regarding returning the device as close to factory reset as possible. I understand that once I have unlocked the device it is never going to be able to be locked again. Is there a process that I can go through which will bring it as close as possible to a factory reset as possible? If so, can someone point me to the procedures?
Thanks

A few others have seen this problem. Try reflashing the rom first using the stock kernel to test it with that. Does redocking fix it at all? Which soft keyboard are you using? This can have an affect on how the keyboard keys work. I use the included Keyboard Manager with the ROM and always set it to ASUS Keyboard when docked, try that if you don't have it set as well.

And to answer your other questions; Just download the latest firmware from the Asus support/download site, unzip it once and flash it in TWRP.
You will loose your custom recovery and all your data.
But IMO that would be a shameful thing to do - like crippling a race horse...
If you want to sell it, anybody who knows anything about this tablet would pay just as much or more for it with CROMi-X installed......

Thanks. I will retry to flash my original backup (prior to CROMI-x) and see if it works. I tried redocking and it had no effect. If you are referring to the ASUS Keyboard as the soft keyboard, I believe I am using it. I looked in settings and it appears to be so. Interestingly, the Keyboard Manager doesn't show up in my visible applications.

Thanks. I really don't want to go back to stock if I don't have to. It is good to hear that it would still be salable with the custom ROM on it. Is there a way to keep CROMi-X but at the same time reset the machine so that all my applications and data are wiped clean except for CROMi-X, TWRP, and the folder with backups and ROMs?
Separately, To fix my issue that I have mentioned above, would it be better to wipe the system, applications, and data prior to installing CROMi-X? Would that possibly fix the problem. If so, how can I do that without loosing the folder with my ROMs and my backup files? Would my applications just re-download after turning on wifi?

To erase all your data just do a "Format Data" in TWRP and then reflash CROMI-X. The rom installer writes some files to /data which will get wiped, so re-flashing the rom is advisable.
If you come from stock, yes - it would be a good idea to wipe your Data partition. A 'Factory Reset' in TWRP should do the trick. That will leave your /data/media folder where all your files are untouched.
You can use Titanium Backup to backup your apps and their data and restore those after a Factory Reset. But do not restore any system data.
You do have everything on your tablet you care about backed up somewhere anyway, don't you??!
Data not backed up is data not yet lost..

Hey,
I want to completely wipe my Samsung S6 before I sell it/giver it away, so that when the new user won't find anything when they scan the device for deleted files.
What's the best way to achieve this?
I figured Encrypting my device and doing a factory reset or wipe within TWRP would suffice, but does it? Has anybody achieved a completely clean device and how?

IShredder works for me.. Or just do it oldschool.. Delete and factory reset. Stuff your phone with crap files to overwrite old files and do that as many times as you feel safe and done.. And if you want to experiment with it try to use some recovery software after to see if you got rid of everything

I think that only works for traditional hard drives rather than on flash memory (SSD/NAND) -- It would seem to me encrypting and factory reset/full wipe in TWRP would work better.
Installing stock firmware encrypts the phone, factory reset/full wipe to completely wipe the data including the key that unlocks the data and doing that another time would probably make data inaccessible especially after a time of use.
AFAIK custom roms are usually not encrypted to allow root to be installed.
I could be wrong however... Has anybody got experience using this method?
The phone needs to be encrypted first before performing a factory reset. Factory reset will make it look like all data has been deleted but actually personal info like photos, texts, emails etc will still be stored in memory and just marked as deleted. This means they can be quite easily restored if someone decides to use a data recovery tool on your phone once it's out of your hands. Both data encryption and factory reset can be done easily from the phone's settings. Data encryption is in the Lock Screen and Security section. Reset can also be done remotely from the findmymobile.samsung website
Hi. i have an issue with my tablet and samsung support wants me to do a factory reset.
My question is then if i flash a firmware from samfrew.com will that remove as much data as a factory reset? or is the data stored in another partition or something similar to that?
A Factory Reset - as it name implies - only restores Android phone to the state it was brought into the market, it does NOT alter phone's Android as flashing a firmware does.
ok? so are you saying that doing the factory reset will rollback all the software updates samsung has rolled out?

No, but factory reset, will wipe your internal drive completely. If you have a sd card store all your photos/music etc on sd card.
Only real time, you want to flash stock firmware
etc, is if you eg... want to upgrade your firmware to newer versions, or come back from root.etc.. etc.
Chances are... if you don't know what you doing... you can soft brick your device etc.!
Factory reset, seems like the better options.?
Even though once or twice (in the past) , a factory reset, did not help, where flashing correct, Official firmware version, actually help solved my issue.
So it's your choice.!
Good luck.

What's the issue?
Try clearing the system cache; it never hurts, it's easy and can cure erratic behavior.
Old loads will probably benefit with a clean load but for minor issues it's a shotgun overkill approach to troubleshooting.
Techs like because it works and makes things real easy... for them, not you!
Worse the issue can easily reoccur if it was caused by an app, setting, etc. Normally it's best to find the root cause rather than do a factory reset.
Exceptions are old loads and if you did a OS upgrade, in which case a factory reload fully warranted.
A reflash should only be done to upgrade or if the original factory load image has been corrupted (very unlikely).
ok.
i have an samsung galaxy tab S6 and since the upgrade to Android 11/OneUI3.1 international key on any hardware keyboard stopped working. regardless of layout set. Dvorak etc. does work though.
so i think it is a software bug and not some lingering configuration.
support asked me first to clear the cache on samsung keyboard app and when that didnt work they asked me to reset all settings in general management. no bueno there either. next thing they want me to do is facory data reset.
so my thinking is if this is a software bug that won't do any good. but reflashing the tablet with android 10 should work if the faulty software is in android 11, or rather in samsungs OneUI i guess.
does this make sense?
but i digressed. what i wanted to learn was what data is affected in a factory reset compared to a firmware flashing.

I basically answered your questionin above post..!
Factory reset will wipe your internal data.!
Where as flashing correct Official Firmware depends...... .!
eg If you do a dirty flash... you keep your data..! Data stays intact, but chances are "anything" (system apps) can get corrupted.?
Resulting eg, in excessive battery drain or an app not working properly.
(In Samsung devices when flashing you use /if you flash... eg Home_CSC etc with the other relevant files)
Otherwise/alternative, if you flash
(.. with the correct Official Firmware using)
eg CSC_XXX file, your device will automatically factory reset..!
Bottom line is, it depends how you flash your device.
example.....
HOME_CSC_xxx -> data will stay intact.
CSC_xxx-> device will factory reset.
Note,
If you knew the basics, about flashing official firmware......
you should have known, above information.?
So i suggest that either you do some reading /research, regarding flashing correct official
Firmware etc or you stand risk of soft
bricking you device..
Good luck

All critical data photos, contacts, music, vids, etc should already fully backed up, redundantly.
The whole idea of a reload or flash is a fresh start from issues that are present.
OS's are 100% expendable, critical data is not.
It's a little game to see how long you can keep a OS copy running well, but that's all it is.
Erratic behavior could indicate a virus or rootkit.
A benign instability could end up corrupting important data, even backups.
I'm ready to reload -now- should be how you roll; keep your data organized and backed up.
If you have a SD card slot, use it as a data drive. OS/programs/download folder on the internal memory or primary drive, and all critical data on the the data drive. You can nuke the OS but your data is safely (hopefully) still on the data drive, you backup that drive at least twice.
