[Q] S Pen Power Saving in Cyanogen - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello World:
I'm currently using Android Revolution HD ROM and quite pleased but I'm also fond of Cyanogen Mod based ROMs and as many already know they lack some features.
My pledge is the following: Is it possible to take the S Pen setting section from a Stock based ROM (like AR HD) and make a installer package?.
I am most interested in being able to disable S Pen detection while docked, checked many apps that aggregate awesome features to the S Pen but none seamed able to do it.
I also tried seeking inside packages and ROMs with this functionality but failed, may be some wayward savvy could help me, I would really appreciate it and I think it could help others.
Air View or set a different cursor for the pen and the mouse could be other two nice targets but, at least for me, are less important items and seam harder to accomplish.
Thanks for your time.

*Generic* Dream ROM

All,
I currently own a stock RC30 UK T-Mobile Dream phone. I have come to terms with the fact that I dont have root access (yet) and have purchased a new ADP1, which hopefully will arrive next year.
When it does finally arrive I plan to make a generic build of RC30/RC8 firmware without all the T-Mobile junk in the ROM (web'n'walk etc) and no default APN's/MMS/etc. I have read through the re-packing sections etc and it seems possible to do without a lot of effort.
My question is; would this be something that other users would be interested in using? If so would you like to see it posted on these forums? Also, please post any comments with any functionality you would like to see added (default apps etc).
i think if you can incorporate new features into the rom such as auto rotate browser or any other tweaks to improve the G1, I'd think it'll be extremely popular. Case in point custom cooked Windows Mobile roms on this forum.
default apps is probably a hit or miss situation. I would stick to the only essentials (ie: Klaxon for alarm clock).
Good idea. We need to start building custom ROM's like all the other WM phones... Here's how I would go about building an Android ROM:
1. Start off with a generic build of android from source. Obviously include all the drivers for the dream.
2. Make a nice, clean skin. If you have knowledge of C/Java, don't be afraid to mess with visual structure of the platform,.
3. Add all the proprietary Google APK's (GMail, Calender, Amazon MP3 etc).
4. Add some 3rd party APK's based on user popularity. (Steel, Power Manager, Locale etc)
5. Add some hacks that require root (auto-rotate, improved tethering functionality)
Yes this will be very interested. All i need is to get bloody root!!! Soon though. Theres alot of smart cookies here
And rework the basic features such as sms's mms's picture viewer. contacts section ( add more input data points. like WM offers )
i guess as any rom you will never please everybody but i agree with "Datruesurfer" steel is a great app.
Onscreen keyboard like in steel or such its not to big and small. but a system wide onscreen keyboard. working in a very dirty industry the onscreen keyboard comes in.
Some other programs i find invaluable and should be an option in the default Android or i at least i really thinks so. are Smspopup, Missed call, Dgaway,Dgprefs, Rings Extender.
Power Manager as well is a good program to help better manage the battery and default network settings.
if there is a way to rework those and remove the default browser and add such options into the android rom itself i would be very pleased.

[GAME][2.1+/3.1+] MAME4droid - MAME 0.37b5 port for Android

Hi... maybe this is no the correct site... but i have updated
iMAME4all site with the new iMAME4all Android port called MAME4droid
that I have been developing recently.
iOS iMAME4all is the best MAME mobile experience since iOS runs very
well iMAME. Android is very hard to deal with (performance) and till
Android 3.0 there is not HW 2D accelerated APIs.
Anyway... i think i have done a good job and with the correct HW...
MAME4droid is a very good experience.
Features:
Port of iMAME4all 1.9 for Android 2.1 and upper phone versions.
Native Support for Android honeycomb tablets.
Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) 2D Hardware Accelerated.
Autorotate. HW Keys remapping supported. Selectable hide/show touch
Controller. Smoothed image. Animated touch stick and more.
Some features still missing are: analog touch control, native wiimote (but you can use 3rd party apps on market) and overlays. The rest iOS features are
there.
I haven't published to market yet, as this is an early release and I'm waiting for comments and (hopefully very few) bug reports.
As a new user I'm not allowed to post links, so to download the apk, search for iMAME4all at google code site.
Maybe this is of interest to you or any of you friends.
I have a Acer Iconia A500 to test this with. Ill post my findings.
Link for others: http://code.google.com/p/imame4all/
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA Premium App
Thanks....let me know your findings.
I have published a b2...fixing a rotation bug...
Fantastic news. I tried it out and seems to be working great. Any possible chance to add support for wiimotes? I can't seem to get it to accept a key from it.
I am incorrect. It can work with wiimotes.
However, there is no way to change the the definition of keys for those of us without a physical keyboard.
Thanks a bunch for doing this work.
Fantastic work...had been hoping someone would pick this up.
Did some testing on my Galaxy 10.1 tab (Bonsai rom, 1.4gHz) and it went well with the few games I tried. On screen controls are a little sluggish but disabling the animated controls smoothed it out.
Please let me know if I can help with any testing. Will be watching this one closely.
So I have it loaded and it seems to run, but I have loaded several roms that are all on the list and all seem to fail. I get missing files for ever single one of the roms. Any clue as to why?
You mention that there isn't 2d hardware accel without honeycomb. Couldn't the 2d be drawn to a 3d layer? There are numerous hardware accelerated games on android 2.x
Yes I will do... But at first I wanted to do 2d engine, so buggy gles drivers were not a problem and supporting all kind of smartphones.
the 2d rendering is very good without filtering now...
how to make working roms? i tried several roms but without success..

same here. it seems that most of the roms are missing files in the zip... I have verified that the same issue also happens in the desktop version of the same build this is made from. So not many roms seem to be working and the rom checker program doesn't fix any of them or I just don't know how to work it.
Sadly that port is not usable for me simply because the onscreen controls dont seem to work right. The analog stick doesnt center unless I lift my finger off the screen. Dead zone on/off doesnt change that. Is this actually supposed to be that way or is it a bug.
I use this on the subway a lot and I was wondering if others would find it helpful to have a quick pause feature. Maybe touch the middle of the screen to pause/unpause.
Just wanted to make that suggestion.
I really like this Mame port, fast, good looking and compatable with many games !
I found a full working romsets in the usual places (just check for mame gp32 romset).
I usually play using a wiimote or a gamepad (android 3.2 is great for that!).
BTW is there an option to enable more buttons on the virtual joystick ? As I have 4 in portrait mode, but only 2 in landscape one.
Also, do you plan to add 2 players support in the input settings?
Thanks for your hard work ! It's so nice to play those good old games on Android.
Can the "Mahjong electron base" game run on Android SYS?
I have the game source of mame for PSP
how to change it to run the mahjong electron base game on Android SYS?!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274215
running on galaxy s starts with buttons and a black screen. then android tells me app is not responding.
I ran this on my gtab 10.1 and it works GREAT!!! I use to use winmo and this is far better than any mame emulator i used there. Great work!!
Hello this is a good working emulator. But i was wondering if it is possible to change or create a conf file, to change the location of the roms folder.
Hi guys
As mame4droid will never support save state
i was thinking does anything know anyway of freeezing it i mean keep it running in the background, without having the android reset the emulators status after a while in the background
that way rather than save state we could resume it and open up from the background and resume our games that way(bit like the xperia play emulator resume method).
i've tried other mame emulators they support save state but dont support dip switches this is pointless as i always like upping the difficulty in my games. mame4droid allows this.
p.s i already tried freezing mame4droid with titanium backup,
no joy
after unfreezing the app resets itself and u lose your rom status.
any help is much appreciated.

[Q] Switch between keyboard layouts

Hi,
I already read about the option to remap some keys by editing the keyboard layout file. Is it also possible to switch between keyboard layouts as you type (using a hotkey) - e.g. I need to be able to quickly change between Cyrilic and Latin keyboards.
Thanks.
I think you're talking about hardware keyboard.... But keyboard apps like swiftkey allow for 3 allow for 3 languages simultaneously.

Oops haha double post
Hi indeed, I was talking about the hardware keyboard, if it is not possible to use both cyrillic & latin keys and quickly switch between them, this would decrease the benefit of the keyboard for me and I might decide to go with a non qwerty phone in the end.
Thanks for you insight though.

In this dev thread: Hardware Key Mapping | Flashable zips & Requests
...user Paitor has come up with and explained how to implement swedish language support for the hardware keyboard.
Given what Paitor has figured out how to do, it is absolutely within our ability to sit down and make exactly what you are asking.
All it takes is someone willing to sit down and invest the time into actually making it happen.
I would volunteer, but I have a lot on my plate already and realistically it's just not feasable for me to do this and keep up with my other projects on this device.
I will however be willing to take a finished keymapping and turn it into a flashable zip file and update the first posting of the key mapping thread with the result.
(and I always credit the author both in the installer package and thread post)
We still have to write in hardware keyboard language support for other languages, and I invite anyone else who wants to use alternative languages to read that thread and see about putting some time into helping us make that available for everyone. What you want to do is not exactly a small project, but pushing what we know to the next level is the reason for XDA's existence.
So, short answer is yes, what you are asking for is completely possible - you can make a key map file that has all of the keys in the languages you would want.
This is XDA, where you can get exactly what you need right down to the last little detail - if you want to put the time into making it happen. We'll be glad to help out where we can along the way.
--------
Edit:
If I were to tackle this project - this would be my approach:
Some apps, like Drocap2 or soundhound, pop up in the list when you have the Genius key remapped to 'search' and long press it. If there is nothing else that utilizes this shortcut function it will default to the only app that does ( in the case of a stock installation or on my ROM, voice search ).
So what I would do is write in each hardware keyboard layout that I wanted, then design an app that utilizes that Genius shortcut function to run - and the sole purpose of the app would be to switch between hardware keyboard layouts.
To me, that seems like the most elegant and refined approach to your problem without making one monstrously cumbersome key-mapping.
You could just press the Genius button to access the app wherever you happened to be, and then have it just show a menu as an overlay to swap between whatever keymappings you wrote in.
--------
My time is being invested in my ROM - then once that's set to my satisfaction, on to kernel work on overclock/undervolt leading into GPU work in conjunction with TV-out, and then on to bluetooth work for controller support on a Sense device.
These are big projects and very time consuming undertakings, so as you can see a project like this keylayout issue is a long time coming before I can get to it - but i'm happy to help where I can for anyone who wants to dive in and do.
Figured i'd throw out what my approach would be to give someone an idea on where to start - and while certainly not the only solution, is something to consider.
I think I have very good news for you!
There's a keyboard called "AnySoftKeyboard" (search for it in the Market and click Dev Website if you want more info) which supports hard kbd mapping (and switching bet layouts by pressing Alt + Space), they have a Russian language pack (Cyrillic & Phonetic), and it is all free.
I have never used it, but remembered coming accross it a while back and decided to check it out for you.
Hope it works
Hey guys, thanks for your replies!
I will definitely check this application - i am not sure it supports all hardware keyboards in general (or just the g1/droid as written in the description), but I will give it a try if I get this phone
And yes, I will gladly help in creating a layout for a Bulgarian keyboard. Unfortunately I cannot create an application for switching between the layouts myself, as I am not a developer.
thanks again.
AnySoft does work
Got my phone and installed AnySoftKeyboard. It does allow for switching bet layouts on the MT4Gs, but does seem a bit quirky so far... (that's with Hebrew & English, you might want to experiment yourself)

[Q] Galaxy Tab 2 for elderly...anyone have experiences to share?

I was wondering if anyone had experiences to share as far as customizing tablets for elderly nursing home patients?
I will be taking delivery on a Galaxy Tab 2 that will be customized as an entertainment device for an elderly person. Dementia, short term memory impairment, and total lack of computer knowledge are in the foreground. I'm not sure if this will work but it's my mother so I'm going to give it a try.
Initially I plan to start with maybe two games (solitaire and a slot machine game) and nothing else. I expect to have to flash a custom ROM to be able to hide as many non-necessary UI elements as possible. One home screen, nav bar with back button only, no lock screen, volume wake, hide the dock, etc.
If she gets comfortable with that, the addition of other elements might be possible, such as a photo album. E-mail to a couple of addresses might be possible. Web browsing is probably not ever going to be in the picture. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.
I'm comfortable with Android flashing and customization (have a GNex), and live nearby so I can maintain the tablet in person. I initially was leaning toward an iPad, but realized that this thing is going to have to be more heavily customized than I think is possible within the Apple scheme of things.
Anyone had any experiences with a situation like this?
Thanks in advance.
Elderly device with GSM
Great idea! I would like to work on this too. For my purposes I would like it to function more of a picture frame with super easy to use GSM capability. Maybe just touch the picture of the person you want to talk to to get connected over the speaker phone.

[Q] Android Layout / Activity Select via Hardware Detection?

Hi all,
First post here - looking forward to participating and working hard towards competency in Android development!
In the short time that I've been at this, I've noticed a great emphasis put on the importance of building a layout that will work across a range of Android hardware, or at least work well with both phones and tablets.
From what I've seen so far, the way to deal with this challenge is to compromise, and to not use absolute sizing for views etc..
I'm wondering if there is any kind of API available that would make it possible to detect hardware (at least screen size?) upon start up, which would then allow for switching to the appropriate XML layout?
I've not encountered it in any of the tutorials I've seen so far....
If this API *doesn't* exist, I would guess that the fact that the apps run on a VM might make any kind of hardware detection problematic if not impossible....
I'd appreciate any enlightenment on this that I can get!
Thanks in advance!
