Top 5 T-Mobile phones to buy? - General Questions and Answers

I need some ideas cuz in always stumped when it comes to choosing phones ima be starting a contract with T-Mobile I just need to know which are the top 5 T-Mobile phones in yalls opinion excluding the note 2 iPhone 5 and that blackberry one I don't have enough for those and I want something that's better then my amaze like a lot better and thanks

First of all, T-Mobile no longer has contracts. Secondly, this isn't the place for this question. This should be in the networking forum.

T-Mobile don't have contracts since when?

Oh well I'm getting the optimus g at&t version unlocked to put on T-Mobile because none of the T-Mobile phones seemed to fit my needs there was always a flaw in the decent phones they had well I'm glad T-Mobile supports the 1900 MHz because since I have 4g in my area with the amaze I know I'll have 4g with the optimus g I done paid 550 for the phone didn't have a money back I'm just that confident it will work

The HTC Amaze gets 4G on the 1700/2100 MHz bands, not 1900MHz. Sorry, but you might be out of luck with the OG, since it has no 1700MHz band built in. It only picks up 1900MHz for T-Mobile's 3G/4G, which may not be in your area.
Unless your area has been refarmed for the 1900MHz band, you're only going to see EDGE (2G) speeds at best. Then again, if you have T-Mobile LTE in your area, then it should work on that if you find someone who can unlock the modem for you.
There are so many "ifs" here, that you would have been better off not buying this phone to use on T-Mobile, unless you know for a fact that you have a refarmed network, or LTE service.
I think you misinterpreted the 1900MHz thing. That is not a nation-wide thing. It is only supported in some markets, not all. If you don't know for certain, then you probably don't have it. Your Amaze getting 4G means absolutely nothing, since it does not run on the 1900MHz band in the first place.

I'm in Dalton ga I'm 20 min south of Chattanooga which has been refarmed

If you're sure of that, then you should be fine with the OG. If I recall correctly, there's a modem hack to enable T-Mobile LTE on it. That is dependent on your local area actually having LTE in the first place, though.

So if chattanooga has been refarmed and I'm 20 min from there I should be fine?
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app

Not necessarily. It depends entirely on the towers you connect to. If the towers in your area use 1700/2100MHz for HSPA+ connections, then your phone needs to support those bands. If the tower has been refarmed and is using 1900MHz for HSPA+, then you have your pick of pretty much every GSM phone on the planet. Call T-Mobile to find out, or get a hold of a Samsung S2 or better phone with the stock Touchwiz ROM. You can go into the diagnostics menu with *#197328640# in the dialer. There's a network frequency menu in there that will show you the bands you're connected to.

I just called them they said basically where ever I have 4g with my amaze I'll have 4g with any at&t phone so I'm saved

That's not true at all. The T-Mobile Amaze only gets 4G on AWS bands. It does not get the 1900MHz band at all, which is what AT&T phones get 3G/4G on. So, either your phone is an unbranded version, or the guy on the phone didn't know what he was talking about. It's not as cut and dry as they would have you believe.
My suggestion would be to make sure that if you buy a non T-Mobile phone, make sure you can return it if things don't go right. I hope that your area is a refarmed area, but unless a tech tells you straight up that the towers in your area are refarmedwith 100% certainty, make sure to cover your behind when buying a new device just in case.

Ok. Well the unbranded one does have 1900MHz built in. It's uncommon for anyone to have that one, since the Amaze ended up being a T-Mobile exclusive device. As far as the refarm goes, I'd still urge you to be cautious in making a purchase. Make sure you can test out the device for a short while within a return period, just in case.

Post your 4g speeds and/or 4g experience.

Been heavily testing my 4g all over my city of Greensboro, NC for three days now. No signal issues, no drops, stays 4g everywhere except in my office building. All four carriers suck in my building. Even then... I still get 4g inside most of the time. My downloads blaze! Running simultaneous tests against my woman's G2... my Sensation is always a little faster.
Average bandwidth = 3 Mbs to 9 Mbs
If you experience slow latency (like the market is slow to load) go to this post for a neat fix. Mine loads everything faster now.
-edit-
Takes me about 10 seconds to fully load everything on the Engadget web site with plug ins on and desktop browser mode. This is using Dolphin HD browser. That's fast!
If you use the speedtest.net app click the results tab after the test for the true speeds. The main display seems to lie.
I'm in Baltimore, MD and so far I'm getting about 800 k up and down. About 10 times as fast as my Sprint 3g connection.

Could be a typo too ... or could just be really crappy network speed if it is indeed 800kbps.
No its really 800k. Today I hit around 1400k down 900 up. I'm happy tho. On Verizon I was getting 600 kbps if I was lucky. And I'd be lucky to top 100kbps these last few months I was on Sprint

Oh let it go already. Even the bodies that define the term have given into the marketing hype. "4G" is said to use a term everyone knows already. The few of us geeks who know otherwise understand just the same. I'm sure you do too.
Bottom line, it's got speed, that's what everyone wants. None of the carriers reach what the original definition of 4G was to be. The carriers call it 4G, so just use the term for the sake of agreement. What the carriers originally called "3G" was not really 3G, but let's not get caught up in a side bar when everyone knows what is being asked. Either the device reaches speeds the carrier calls their "4G" speeds or it does not.

2g reception
i have tried the quick fix to no avail. i am running on 2g speeds around my house. 1 mile over though i am getting 4g speeds.
question is, is this a tmobile tower related issue or a issue with the radio on the phone.
edit- i was getting at least 3g speeds on my old samsung behold in the same area.
New Orleans, La.
I live in Knoxville, TN. I am lucky to get 600 kbps around here. I have occasionally hit 6-9 Mbps, but only a handful of times, and not for more than a couple minutes. Not sure if it's a tower issue, or a radio issue. T-Mobile is looking into. My speeds were much faster when I had my Evo on Sprint

Don't get me wrong. That is the reason I said I am dumping my HTC Evo. I ran a test on tmo speeds on a g2x and I was blown away. So I figured, why the hell do I need to pay for premium data when 4G is not even available in my area since Sept. 2010.
So I decided that I will be getting this phone tomorrow when it releases at a retailer. But my argument still stands, it is HSPA+.
I got mine from Wal-Mart on the 9th.. unless u meant a tmobile retail store.

even with p920 there are 2 versions, tmo and att. Be careful when buy make sure to ask seller about tmo version, or look for spec that has 1700mhz band that tmo uses. att uses 850 and 1900mhz band, you don't want that one. i bought mine at

What 3g/4g bands is the t-mobile version releasing with. There have been conflicting reports from engadget et al based on fcc documents on which actual bands would be included and the htc website doesn't list specifics for the t-mobile variant.

I'm sure it will have those bands, but will it also include others is the key question. There were some fcc docs posted on engadget and other sites indicating that it might possibly include 850 and 1900 as well. Almost as if the frequencies were specified in anticipation of the merger with ATT going through.

Samsung Infuse on Simple Mobile Network. Can't get 3G.

Okay guys, on the day I got my Infuse I thought I give it a try and put it on the Simple Mobile 3G network. So what ticks me is that I'm always stuck on a 2G network with a big "E" on my status bar. I even called Simple Mobile customer service and they said they can't fix that. Dammit, there has got to be some way to bypass AT&T. Help me out guys. Thanks.

that's just a prepay plan on t-mobile. the infuse will need an att or similar sim card. t-mobile has unique frequencies and features on there network. it is not att's fault. edge only is typical with att phones. try strait talk, they sell sims now and you can specify att compatible.
Yeah...nothing you can do except switch carriers...go to straight talk, its $45 a month for unlimited everything, just go to there website and order an att compatible sim.
Your pretty much guaranteed to get edge when using an att phone on t mobile, simply because they run in differnt cell frequencies or whatever you wanna call it

Hey thanks guys, I appreciate the info. Now that I know, yeah I guess that sounds like a best solution is to just switch carriers. Then again I feel that I made a mistake by buying an Infuse. Dammit, should of gotten the Galax Epic 4G and flashed it to Cricket. But yup thanks guys.
I've been told you cant get 3g because the Infuse is a 4g phone. That could also be an issue as well. I ran into that problem when att had to replace my captivate with my infuse. This is what they told me.

That's not the issue at all...for one thing, the infuse isn't even real 4g...it runs on hspa+, hspa is 3g...so when you have "H+" you have 4g...when you have "H" you have 3g...when you have "E" you have edge/2g
These phones are backwards compatible...if they wernt then you would constantly lose data signal

You don't. Our phones do not support an LTE network.

Give it up - it does NOT have LTE. When this phone was built, T-Mobile didn't even have a clue how they were going to even IMPLEMENT LTE, let alone have any devices with support for it. Just because the same frequency is used, doesn't mean the same technology is used. The 4G in this phone is WCDMA which is totally different than LTE..
Man, why am I wasting my time.... go away and enjoy your 4G.
Guys, let's not be so harsh on OP.
To answer your question OP, the G2x does not have the hardware required to enable LTE. There is no LTE antenna, amplifier, nor chipset. The best we can get with the G2X is HSPA+ (4G). Hopefully this answers your question.
So just make sure that if they switch to LTE in your area before your contract is up....they give you a phone that works on it. Just sayin....

I'm pretty sure that they won't completely disable HSPA+ in the area if they brought on LTE.
I think, the only people left on the g2x forums are all jaded because of this phone. Don't feel to bad OP just understand that most of the people here have been waiting patiently for something good to happen with this phone for years.
