Gs3 no WiFi after root - General Questions and Answers

I rooted my gs3 today with no problem. I have root access and CWM installed. I came to find that I cannot turn WiFi on. Did a quick search and seems that I'm not alone. If I flash a new rom do you think WiFi will work? If not I need some suggestions. Thanks !!
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Your wifi should be working fine after rooting your phone weird it isn't. You could try flashing a new rom that will probably make it work again.

I read somewhere that I used a wrong version of gs3 toolkit. Evidently it happened to someone else. But you think a new rom should enable it to work?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

Oh I see, yes I am quite sure a new rom will make it work again

Depending on just how wrong the toolkit you used to root was, I'd suggest completely wiping and returning to stock and hoping you didn't do something really, really bad - but only time will tell.

Rooting Samsung Sgh-I896 on Rogers in canada

Hey everyone
I have been tiring to look up how to root my Samsung SGH-I896 that is on Rogers in Canada but have haven't been able to find and think that matches my phone info. I will list my firmware and other info if some can point me in the right way that would be nice.
Model = SGH-I896
Frimware = 2.3.3
Kernel version = 2..35.7-i896uxkh2-cl296008
Build number = GINGERBREAD.UXKH2
Thanks
I have the same phone and believe me it's not as easy as it is for the us users. Rogers actually takes code off the phone so that it's harder to root or unlock. I had to factory reset and use an at&t software instead of Rogers. After that everything was easy. Use one click root or anything like it

I dont recall having any issues with rooting my phone back in the day. I recall being able to use superoneclick to get the job done on stock gingerbread.
Although if you are planning on installing a rom on your phone then root isnt required. Just flash CWM and then flash a rom. The roms come with root already installed on it.
I have tried super oneclick and it hang up at step 7 but maybe iam doing something wrong. I will try again later tonight. Thanks alot guys

Download the latest SuperOneClick Root. http://www.multiupload.nl/VGCN3ZTFM8
It should work with your captivate. I used it to root mine and I did it on GB too.
Thanks guy i just got home and tried the latest version and it worked. Only thing is that when it roots it then my menus, and when i go to call some on run every slow. I un rooted it and it put everything back to normal. And ideas?

I used heimdal method front this post, was so easy I was kicking myself for not doing it earlier. I was 2.3.3 on robbers too.
PS I highly recommend cm10, i never imagined my i896 could run this fast.
I am trying to put cwm10 on it now but iam getting confused. What yo flash to it. look like everything is for i897 or has a different modem number so i don't know if i can flash it to my phone? At this point i was hoping that some that has a i896 phone on roger would post a link to the post that they used for there phone. But i may just have to try one i finded and.hope for the best.

i896 and i897 are almost identical with minor differences. You can use i897 roms on the i896 without any issue.

I have the rogers version, I've unlocked it to use Koodo as a provider and have also installed CM10 (runs beautifully!). They are the same phone, ours just does not say at&t at the top of it (Samsung instead). I never bothered with rooting, which was a waste of time anyhow... move on from Gingerbread and you wont look back, I swear!

So I'm a total newbie here... so I don't have to root to get ICS or JB on my Captivate with Rogers? How exactly? I looked at the Heimdall method, but I still don't really understand.

I used Superoneclick with both Froyo and Gingerbread stock Rogers versions and it rooted just fine. Just need to follow the instructions.
I think for Froyo you had to do some really stupid stuff, like plug it in and take it back out 2-3 times but other than that it always worked great.
Worked so well I even made a donation to the developer.
If it hangs on you, I would suggest reading the thread to see if somebody developed a method that works. My Froyo image wouldn't root so I read the Rogers captivate thread and somebody posted telling me how to unplug and plug it back in, worked well.
I think I might have screwed up... I installed the unzipped ROM onto my external SD rather than the zipped one... what do I do now???
Can you get into recovery?

In that recovery go to mounts and storage. Then select mount usb. Then u can copy from ur pc to ur phone.

I didn't do anything with the IMEI except back it up using the terminal emulator and the "reboot nvbackup" command. Not even sure if it did anything or not. How do you reprovision the phone? What does that even [claim to] do? A google search shows a lot of people complaining about this. I hope someone comes along and helps too.

If you reprovision, it will wipe all your data and such. Idk if you wanna try it. I only tried it because someone suggested it, but it was pointless. So, if you were gonna try that, you would want to nandroid backup first. The way to reprovision if you're interested is dial *2767*3855# that'll do the trick for you. I hope someone comes along to help as well. After a while some fix usually comes around. Just gotta be patient sometimes

Interesting. I wonder what the reprovisioning actually does. I didn't flash CWM yet since I'm running the stock bootloader, and it is locked. I heard that unlocking the bootloader can cause trouble if an OTA update changes things on it.

About data/signal issue, that's not your IMEI. It more than likely is your sim card. I had to get 2 replacements from Verizon due to a weak signal. Another simple thing to try is to be sure data roaming is ON in the settings menu, and restart. That is known to work. Rooting prob did not cause this to happen, the S3 has signal issues to begin with. Do not start running scripts to attempt to fix without going through the verizon fixes first. Stay on stock rom, hide your root apps and bring in to get sim card. They won't check for root.
Plan B is to call *611 and speak to someone, they can push a signal code through to fix. Don't say your rooted!

Oh but we shall see what happens when I change towers. To compare, and diagnose this issue, how is your phone setup. Mine is as follows:
Purchased at: Small business authorized reseller
Contract: On contract
Purchase date: 9/5/12 (opened a new account, not adding a line)
OS/ROM: Stock 4.0.4
Rooted: Yes
Bootloader: Locked (had it unlocked temporarily to see if I could do it, but I relocked it to diagnose the data issue)
Recovery: CWM
ICS Encryption: Not turned on (I don't think I can use it now that I have CWM installed anyway)
Apps that run at boot: Call Recorder by Skvalex
Root apps installed: SuperUser (duh), Rom Manager, CallRecorder, Terminal Emulator (used it to execute "reboot nvbackup" as a supposed IMEI backup method)

So far all I've done is "reboot nvbackup" to supposedly backup my IMEI, but I have no idea if it did anything. I'll double check data roaming, but I don't want to rack up a roaming bill. Also I don't have to worry about my store finding out if I root. The sales guy helped me root it before I even paid for it.
The guy I dealt with helped with root questions for me too at actually vzw store... Funny! Sim should do the trick. And yes, that script you ran backed your IMEI correctly, so it's not that. Data roaming is to see if it improves issue, if it does, your having network issues that are not phone related. There is no reason to keep that option on unless your lost in the woods and need data!

Best way to update??

Okay, I read on here every day on my cell and can't find the answer to my question. I, like alot of people have a stock, rooted, unlocked phone and want to update to the latest OTA. I would like to, if possible, do this without Odin.
I was wondering if they're was a file like Scott's stock Rom that could be dirty flashed over stock without any problems? If there is no other way, I plan on using Odin to get back to stock after I relock the bootloader, take the update, and then reroot, unlock, etc.
The big reason that I would rather do it without the computer is that I am on the road 90% of the time and don't have access to a computer. I depend on my phone for GPS as well as entertainment, so being without my phone isn't an option for me. Are there any options?

I am the same way and would like to do it without going completely back to locked/un-rooted/stock. I was able to find a ROM that Scott just updated with the new VRALG7 from verizon here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1892670
This will apparently update your phone to the new baseband and leave you stock/rooted.
Hope this helps!

Did you just wipe cache and dalvik cache or do a full wipe?
What I ended up doing was a full wipe and flashed CleanROM 2.5, which is based on the new VRLG7 updates. Then I flashed the new VRLG7 radio form here:

Titanium backup took care of restoring all of my apps and settings.

Can I ask why you guys want the update anyway? I'm also on stock/rooted/unlocked and all I did was freeze the apps called 'sdm' and 'fwupgrade' and there's no chance for it to update to the OTA. I hear all it has is dumbed down search and a Verizon remote-help sort of thing.
It blocks a security issue and is different framework from what I understand. I would lock the bootloader, unroot, OTA, and then redo everything but will not be around a computer until tomorrow at the best.

After reading the posts on Scott's CleanROM 2.5, that's what I am going to do this weekend. I will feel a lot better knowing I received the most up-to-date software from Samsung as the framework and then customize my phone the way I want. Plus, that's what a lot of the more experienced posters have been recommending, and for a noob like me, it would be dumb for me to not take their advice.
Thanks for getting back to me about the cache wiping question!

Please Help : SCH-I535 4.3 updated

Hi all,
I don't know whether I'm posting my question in the correct forum or not.
My Phone is SCH I-535. Accidentally, I upgraded to 4.3.
I have rooted and downloaded rootchecker from play store and it is rooted successfully.
Basically, I did a big blunder last time, by flashing a wrong ROM altogether. Flashed the International Version ROM and it hard bricked, and it was a mess. I could not use my phone for almost 6 months since, I did not have time to work on this. So now, I got the phone up and running and I did not know that, I should not accept the 4.3 update. So I did accept and now I'm on 4.3 and rooted.
Basically, I have 3 requirements.
1. Get a clean, fast, simple ROM, which has only essential Apps and no bloatware - CAN ANYONE SUGGEST ANY ROM-SCH-I535,4.3,ROOTED
2. Get the HotSpot feature working - I downloaded foxfi, and it is working fine. But if the stock Hotspot feature works, then it will be great. I don't like many Apps in my phone. I feel they make it a bit slow. I want my phone to be as fast as possible.
3. Increase the Brightness of my screen. I read somewhere about the kernel modification or something. I tried to do that last time and I messed it up badly.
So, I did not want to do anything stupid this time and I'm posting here.
I have read different threads and there is a lot of information, and that's how, I was able to root this 4.3 SCH I-535. But I don't want to do anything on my own, with out expert advice. So I'm posting here.
Any help is highly appreciated. Thank You.
1. Lots of great roms available, take a look at all of them and see what looks interesting. Every rom will be experienced differently by everybody, so your best option here is to systematically try them out until you find a good one that runs like you need it to. Remember you need safestrap in order to do this and the rom can only be 4.3 TouchWiz.
2. I think there's a wifi hack somewhere that will remove the Verizon prompt completely. Not sure where to find it though, might not be s3 specific.
3. Increasing the brightness may not be possible. If there is a way, then an xposed module might be able to do it. Take a look at all of them and see if something allows you to modify that.

You can unlock bootloader and even change your ROM. Search your device type here on xda and read first the comments from the people who already have changed their ROMS. If they don't have significant problems why should you worry.
