I have now had several people use the image from my EN-GB Surface on non-en-gb devices and all appears to be well, only difference noticed so far is the support number stays on the english one and doesnt change regardless of language pack.
Still getting requests for this, I'm in Turkey at the mo and dont have a lot of connectivity, so if you PM me and it takes a day or so, tough, saving you a trip to the MS Store

Thank you for this!
I'm in the process of recovering my surface at the moment!
Finger cross but all seem to be going well :cyclops:
I'd like to get and store copies of all regional installs if possible, if anyone out there (here) has other versions then drop me a PM and I'll stick them somewhere on t'interweb so we can recover if we need to...
I now have an FTP server for these to go on.

Thanks a million Trig0r!!! I need to bring my RT back to life as I installed 8.1 in German and my recvery image didn't work don't know why.
I am downloading your image now and I see it is a ISO file, should I unpack it and copy it to my USB or what?
Thank you!!!
Just copy the files in the recovery to a fat32 formatted usb drive, then hold the volume down button plus power button, this will take time to boot but its normal.

I don't want to sound like a noob here, but I was just making sure that I can use your EN-GB recovery image on my EN-US Surface RT to remove Windows 8.1 Preview. Also hoping that office will work when i get back to the start.

Was going to ask the same...
I havent tested it personally, I know the en-GB image works in place of the en-US image though, not sure about rolling back from 8.1 to 8.0 though, I would of thought it possible but I havent checked it.
Yes it works.

its an EN-GB image. So it will be in English instead of American English.
Colour instead of color etc.
You can install the language pack etc and get it into "proper" English
EN-US Recovery Files
I used the Surface RT on display at my work to create the USB recovery drive, and was able to successfully downgrade from 8.1 Preview to stock. Trig0r, how would I go about assembling these files to share? Then I can put together a step-by-step guide for downgrading that has the potential to make a few people happy.

EN-US Recovery Drive Image Request
Any chance someone can post the EN-US version? I appreciate the EN-GB image it works wonderfully, but I'm in the US and a EN-US image would be awesome to recover back to . I'm surprised that Microsoft doesn't already have the recovery drive image available for download. Also the Windows RT 8.1 preview drive image is worthless. It wont activate after resetting.

Lucky you, check the hspl/spl to see if it's locked or unlocked. If unlocked, contact the user, I mean The Living Legend called COTULLA and tell him about your phone. Actually, just contact him, he will tell you to do a few things and if someone can help in here, it's him. We owe him the HSPL for HTC WP7 1st and 2nd generation phones and the 1st Titan custom rom (DFT) among other things.

You can try holding down Vol Up, camera, and power, or Vol Down, camera, and power to get to the bootloader.

I tried doing the volume down, camera, and power combination and it displayed something like a BIOS screen very quickly, around 1-2 seconds and then continues to boot up. I only managed to read the 1st line which says 'Security Unlocked' or something. I'll try take a photo.
EDIT 2: Regarding the file system access, I found these on the phone. Will any of these help?

Security Unlocked probably means UEFI is off, or otherwise the bootloader is unlocked. Could be very wrong on that, though. Either way, doesn't matter since we don't have a 8X ROM to cook and modify.

This is so very serious and huge news...if it has the UEFI unlocked like an ES is supposed to be. Can you access the file system/mount device in bootloader mode?
Also, could you try and install a WP7.* xap file ( just download an app/game xap from xda or this one from here, not a sys messing one) on it? Just copy it inside phone's int meme and click on it, the installer ''should" handle the xap...
BTW,if tha XAP installs and runs I could say that phone is worth its weight in gold...cough...cough...for us and MS.

Email it to you as an attachment and try to open it on the phone.
Also, depending on your time and availability, you could contact E:V:A by PM or posting in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1934388 so you could dump whatever is on that phone.
Wow, this is real HW porn! I posted partition dump instructions in that thread, but I now see that this could be even more useful in the future, for allowing us to have unlocked bootloaders with all engineering features intact. So if you could somehow get us, either a full "disk image" or preferably all of the individual partitions, that would be awesome!
All the tools needed can be found in the links of my footer. It could be that you need to install some additional USB drivers as well.. But we'll see.

It's not that hard and it can't be done via remote support unless you have two machines ( you need one running linux and the other one with a IM that has video also). Your best shot is to find a friend that knows Linux and has a Linux distro installed and "beg" him to do it for you.
Also, it would be wise to keep secret the rest of the info about the device. It's been known that MS roams XDA and this thread isn't good news for them, just let me put this in another way : it's like you've got a WIN8 key generator in your hands ( though this is not a solution to activate W8). Stick to PM the devs.
Gracias

CHECK FIRST PAGE. =)
So I want to refresh my Windows 8 RT tablet but I get the error: "Insert Media. Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files."
I checked the recovery partition and it is healthy and 4 gigs in size. I can't even remove everything and reinstall. Same error.
Maybe there is a way to access this hidden system partition and manually execute the install or backup.

Recovery files are in recovery partition. There are two files, install.wim and install.md5
I solved this way:
I assigned letter F: a recovery partition with diskpart, and I wrote the following command
reagentc.exe /setosimage /path F: /target c:\Windows /Index 1
In this way, I was able to refresh the tablet, from settings menu.
Anyway, I'm really disappointed by Asus...

If the Pro is the same as RT then the recovery is tagged to the machine somehow so a recovery from another machine wouldnt work.

looks like you'll be driving into Sacramento to visit the Microsoft store. They should be able to get you fixed up.
Sacramento does not have a Microsoft Store. But now I have the files off the partition.
I can see the partition there in Disk Managemement but that's it. Using diskpart I assigned it a drive and copied the 3 files contained in the single directory "RecoveryImage" off onto a USB stick. They are:
"CreatePartition-UEFI.cmd"
"install.wim"
ResetConfig.xml"
How do I get the surface to see the USB and use these files in a restore from USB?
Thank you in advance,
Twack
You can create a Recovery USB by going to Control Panel, click the Recovery icon and there is an option to create an USB Recovery drive from the recovery partition. You will need at least 8GB on the USB drive. After the backup is completed, you have the option to delete the Recovery partition and reclaim the 8GB of free space to your drive C.

Can someone please post the file structure listing of what is on a Surface Pro 128GB USB recovery?

@twack: Are you showing hidden and system files/folders? By default, Windows still hides those. That will make the recovery partition look pretty empty, but it's not.

I ended up exchanging it for a new one at BestBuy last night. Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
Just for those that have hit this thread.
I've had a guy contact me who deleted his recovery partition, he used a eg-UK image on his Swedish RT and it works fine.
So far thats one person that said it did work and one that didnt so I'll recreate and upload my image again and fire out links as and when.
It Works
I can confirm that it works to use another recovey image on the RT.
My USB ended up beeing blank after creating a recovery image (i failed to check that before installing 8.1 though).
Of course I ran into the no-wireless bug on 8.1 so I had to restore it.
I'm now running on EN-GB instead of US-EN (original version om my RT).
If anyone is willing to provide an US-EN image I would be very happy though (I'd like to get the RT back to the way it left the factory to 100%).
Did you set the device up as en-US when you did it or was it all en-GB when you had gone through the install, be interested to know what differences there are, I've put 8.1 on mine now, works a treat...
I've never used USB Image Tool before, but it supposedly creates a full copy of a USB flash drive:

Here's a copy of my USB Recovery:

Its been confirmed that images seem to work on all devices. Only thing to watch out for is what language is the image in, in this case US-English. Your device will install any language fine, its just a case of you do want russian instead for instance, or the big one earlier on is that there was only a british english image at first which if you were an american user would have a few things spelt incorrectly.
Have a poke around in trig0rs thread and towards the end there are a few languages, I assume you will just want this image anyway.
Got en-GB and en-US recovery images on my FTP...

If I understand the question, yes, you can use it to install regardless of what is on the drive. It could be blank and it should still work.

After you have booted from the USB Recovery Drive and when you get to the screen asking what to recover, don't be fooled by the "Windows 8.1" that it shows. That is the drive you want to overwrite.

This is a version of the 8.0 jailbreak that will run in the recovery environment. This is meant more for developers than end-users.
It does not force a two minute wait at the start, but that is still required.
As always, it was developed for a Surface RT. Vivo tabs, etc..., your mileage may vary. I developed it targeting the Windows RT 8.0 image that MS uploaded after the 8.1 upgrade issues. I don't know if this varies from the stock image, I don't have it anymore.
I'm also curious as to if it'll run on a Surface 2 in the recovery environment. If anyone can test, I'd be grateful.
The trick to getting cdb and whatnot to run was plugging in valid certificate catalogs for cdb (and some other tools).
It also doesn't work with the side volume keys, though it does work with the volume keys on my Type 2 keyboard.
I think you need to add an batch file to download the symbol. The preloaded one may not work on some other tablets.

There is no Internet in recovery mode. If you can send me aystem32\ntkrnlmp.exe and system32\ci.dll for your recovery I can add them.

However you can run it under normal Windows RT environment, don't you? I know there is no internet so I said it should be in another file.

You can't get at the recovery files easily from a full system either.

So, seriously, that was my mistake. I only try to use side volume key. And I delete all my work for recovery jailbreak yesterday. Want to cry now. :crying:
Thank for your work, again.

I get what you're saying, misread your other post. I don't have my device in a bootable state right now, but once I get it fixed up I'll make a .bat you can run to dump the PDBs for the other kernels.

That really stinks. Sorry for your loss.
Assuming we have a way to run unsigned code, does anyone have a way to perform raw reads of a block device? I don't think there's any way to do it with managed code, and my development skills only extend a little into that. I figure there should be a way to compile C++ for ARM though. It might help you recover some of what you lost.
Also, it might help us get deleted files off system partitions. A few of us got lucky in getting Vivotab RTs that didn't have signing files deleted. If we could boot from a USB stick and undelete them, then just about everyone could have them...
nice work and a useful way to boot an RT8.1 system into an 8.0RT RE + jailbreak system
I had to get the correct symbols for my Sept 2012 kernel
You have to unlock the os drive if system has a Live account and it is Bitlockered
I usually skip that and run a batch file
manage-bde -unlock c: -recoverypassword xxxxxx-...
WindowsRE RT8.0
doesn't have a full windows environment or full win32 api (obviously) and no network (so far)
but can run many unsigned RT desktop apps
eg
putty
Strangely it can't run RT8.1 standard OS utilities -- must be some version number etc in the header it doesn't like
I might look into a way to dual boot it from HD (rather than booting from a USB) in due course
This is awsome! Been waiting for some update on something about RT jailbreaking even though it's in a RE environment.
