I cannot get my recovery/restore image set to active. IS there somewhere where I can download a recovery image and load it on a USB stick. Can someone put one up for me?
128GB Surface Pro
Thanks in advance,
Twack
Someone has to have a recovery USB image that they upload somewhere for me????
PLEEEEEZE!
If the Pro is the same as RT then the recovery is tagged to the machine somehow so a recovery from another machine wouldnt work.

looks like you'll be driving into Sacramento to visit the Microsoft store. They should be able to get you fixed up.
Sacramento does not have a Microsoft Store. But now I have the files off the partition.
I can see the partition there in Disk Managemement but that's it. Using diskpart I assigned it a drive and copied the 3 files contained in the single directory "RecoveryImage" off onto a USB stick. They are:
"CreatePartition-UEFI.cmd"
"install.wim"
ResetConfig.xml"
How do I get the surface to see the USB and use these files in a restore from USB?
Thank you in advance,
Twack
You can create a Recovery USB by going to Control Panel, click the Recovery icon and there is an option to create an USB Recovery drive from the recovery partition. You will need at least 8GB on the USB drive. After the backup is completed, you have the option to delete the Recovery partition and reclaim the 8GB of free space to your drive C.

Wow I totally misunderstood - yep, if your surface is working just use it to make the recovery USB for you.

I've tried that. It does not work. It only puts a few utilities on the USB and no recovery image.
Can someone please post the file structure listing of what is on a Surface Pro 128GB USB recovery?
TIA
@twack: Are you showing hidden and system files/folders? By default, Windows still hides those. That will make the recovery partition look pretty empty, but it's not.

I ended up exchanging it for a new one at BestBuy last night. Thanks for everyone's suggestions!
Just for those that have hit this thread.
I've had a guy contact me who deleted his recovery partition, he used a eg-UK image on his Swedish RT and it works fine.
So far thats one person that said it did work and one that didnt so I'll recreate and upload my image again and fire out links as and when.
It Works
I can confirm that it works to use another recovey image on the RT.
My USB ended up beeing blank after creating a recovery image (i failed to check that before installing 8.1 though).
Of course I ran into the no-wireless bug on 8.1 so I had to restore it.
I'm now running on EN-GB instead of US-EN (original version om my RT).
If anyone is willing to provide an US-EN image I would be very happy though (I'd like to get the RT back to the way it left the factory to 100%).
Did you set the device up as en-US when you did it or was it all en-GB when you had gone through the install, be interested to know what differences there are, I've put 8.1 on mine now, works a treat...

I placed the pkg file in /sdcard and then connected the phone to the ps3, make card readable, go to Install pakages then press triangel and X. The Install pakage manager will scan for pkg`s to install.
Hope you understand

How to run downloaded PS3 games from external HDD?
Hmm, i can't get the back up game tio boot.
Sent from my Nexus One
I was not able to run backup games either. then i looked aroud and came across of a ps3-hacks site and found out the psfreedom.ko file wasnt good since i downloaded a different one and got it to work once i used that psfreedom.ko file. so look for the right ko file in a certain ps3-hacks dot com website and you should be able to backup and play... note there is a tool out there to covert iso to folders for external devices but you need to decrypt the eboot.bin file before what you have here will work... and yes this does work and it is pretty sweet...

So I want to refresh my Windows 8 RT tablet but I get the error: "Insert Media. Some files are missing. Your Windows installation or recovery media will provide these files."
I checked the recovery partition and it is healthy and 4 gigs in size. I can't even remove everything and reinstall. Same error.
Maybe there is a way to access this hidden system partition and manually execute the install or backup.
Any help please?

I followed the guide but it said make sure the checkbox next to 'copy recovery partition to usb' is checked but alas it is greyed out. Does that mean the recovery partition is missing?
Does anyone have the recovery on usb that they can upload for me to download please? Ideally if you have an Asus Vivo Tab RT version although I hear a Surface recovery file will be fine too! PLEASE!

I know the other person meant well but if you could upload to a different file sharing I would appreciate it. The one he uses is giving me problems and I can't download and have to wait 3 hours for my next attempt and between each download.
Maybe even on skydrive and make file public for say 48 hours.

Recovery files are in recovery partition. There are two files, install.wim and install.md5
I solved this way:
I assigned letter F: a recovery partition with diskpart, and I wrote the following command
reagentc.exe /setosimage /path F: /target c:\Windows /Index 1
In this way, I was able to refresh the tablet, from settings menu.
Anyway, I'm really disappointed by Asus...

Hi all, I have completely screwed my surface rt last night.
I was trying to do a reset and it wasn't working then I tried a bunch of other things ive read on the forum and my surface wont even boot up. its just in a constant loop ive trying to do an automatic repair and diagnosing and keeps bringing me to the boot menu.
I made a recovery usb but it doesn't seem to be working so im assuming the OS was already corrupt hence the reason the reset option in "change pc settings" wasn't working.
I would really love if someone could upload a recovery image of their surface rt. I cannot find one any where and the ones I have found they have pulled the links down.
hope someone can help me out here.
cheers.

Next time do a search. You would have found a thread on this. And, as was said in the aforementioned thread these recoveries are device specific, so even if I got mine to you, it wouldn't work for you. Take it to Microsoft and have them replace it.

i did do a search and nothing has been able to help me so far. i also did read that it is device specific but have also read it has worked for some people. unfortunatley in australia we do no have any microsoft stores so its not that easy to just take it somewhere.
I feel like there are files missing from c drive. Almost like it started to do a restore then stopped halfway. In which I have never been able to get it to that stage for that to be the case.
I did some reading and was able to find the recover partition and tried to run the install.wim file from which I understand to basically be the “OS”. When I try to run it it says “no such interface supported”
From what I understand there is just no way to do a fresh install on these things regardless of what the problem is which is disappointing on Microsoft’s behalf.

No. Those recovery images are device-type specific. Not device-specific. You can safely take one WIM file from the recovery partition of your device and use it to recover a different device of the identical model.
adam_4049
I see that you were able to start a restore process and it fails in the middle.
You may try the following: boot into the command line mode and format the boot partition (probably drive C: ). This would fix the disk errors if they are present, but you'll lose everything. Use diskpart tool to find the disk letter. Be careful with diskpart - do not delete partitions or issue "clean" command.
Then assign the letter to recovery partition with diskpart (say, R: ), then expand WIM file from the recovery partition with the command like this:
Code:
Dism /apply-image /imagefile:R:\RecoveryImage\install.wim /index:1 /ApplyDir:c:\
R:\RecoveryImage\install.wim - a path to install.wim on the recovery partition.
More info: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh824910.aspx - you need only "Dism /apply-image" part, bcdboot is unnecessary. Lets hope that "apply-image" option is present on RT.
This would forcibly expand the WIM file to your disk C:. Or at least you'll be able to see why it fails.
This may help. Or may completely brick the device and you'll need to go to service. So use it on your own risk. And you should be familiar with the command line - so don't ask how to use diskpart.
I had a problem with the recovery process when I've played with BCD and added a boot from VHD option. Had to delete that extra boot setting - and then recovery went fine. But I assume that you have not played with BCD.
Yeah, looks like people dont use search, what you want is a nice useful soul that creates a USB recovery from his EN-UK Surface_RT and puts it up on Copy, or Dropbox or something like that...
I've never used USB Image Tool before, but it supposedly creates a full copy of a USB flash drive:

Its been confirmed that images seem to work on all devices. Only thing to watch out for is what language is the image in, in this case US-English. Your device will install any language fine, its just a case of you do want russian instead for instance, or the big one earlier on is that there was only a british english image at first which if you were an american user would have a few things spelt incorrectly.
Have a poke around in trig0rs thread and towards the end there are a few languages, I assume you will just want this image anyway.
Got en-GB and en-US recovery images on my FTP...
Thanks for the Surface image OP.
Question: Will this allow me to install the OS from a flash drive?
Thanks again.

If I understand the question, yes, you can use it to install regardless of what is on the drive. It could be blank and it should still work.

I think there are a number of tutorials online.
After you have booted from the USB Recovery Drive and when you get to the screen asking what to recover, don't be fooled by the "Windows 8.1" that it shows. That is the drive you want to overwrite.

Hello,
yes this has probably been a problem to many people, but I couldn't find a solution for my case.
I flashed a ROM and forgot to backup my files before, so now my whole photos and files I need are gone.
I am looking for a solution to restore deleted photos on my nexus 5. I obviously can't use generic recovery methods because, well, I don't have a sd card to pull out and plug into my computer.
is there a app / method to recover deleted files directly on the nexus (over adb?)?
Paid solutions are welcome too!
Check this thread, has a topic on OTG, which happens to allow mounting as usb storage. Might do the trick.
Hmm the OTG part is about mounting devices on the nexus. I want it the other way around, mount it on my mac and run recovery software on it.
Any ideas on that?
Can't be done.

Yes, I am currently trying a option cross linked in that guide.
I'm taking a raw image of my data partition to my mac and will try to restore data there.
Steps taken from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705. Although for windows, but finding the needed tools for mac is not that big of a task.
Will report if I have any success on this

You've mentioned, " I don't have a sd card to pull out and plug into my computer", actually, you could apply to some app that could identify your device directly.
Here is an Android Data Recovery Mac that may help. You can also google other apps if you need.
