[Q] Output only to hdmi tv - Asus Transformer TF700

I haven't used my Infinity in a few months and instead of selling it I'm thinking about recommissioning it as a media player for the living room, but I have a few questions first.
Is it possible to connect a tv via hdmi and have the tablet only playback the video on the tv or will it always play on the tablet itself too?
The keyboard dock has a usb slot, is it possible to connect a usb hub and connect maybe 3-4 hard disks (with external power supply) to it? And if so, what kind of transfer speeds are we looking at? Is 48Mbps realistic?
Thanks in advance.

When you connected the hdmi to the TV, your device screen will be black. Second question is yes, you can plug a mini usb hard disk to the dock usb and play back the movie from the external hard disk and streaming to your TV.

With the new 4.2.1 OTA, hdmi is still working fine, but the tablet also played the movie.

I can confirm the same findings.

Beware. The 4.2.1 OTA broke my HDMI. Evidently it's rare but it does happen. In the process of downgrading now.

hdmi adoptor

I seem to be having a problem with the hdmi adoptor that came with the phone does any one know if there is is a setting to turn on for the hdmi out to work if so where is it ? i hooked my infuse up to the adopter that came with and cant get any thing on my tv???
Did you plug in the power adapter to it as well?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
Yes i plugged in as well .
OH do you think it could have any thing to do with being rooted ???
Mine is all messed up, but i noticed that when I had my power adapter plugged into a surge protector it wouldn't work, then I plugged it into the regular wall socket and the hdmi turned on.
But like I said my hdmi out was all screwed up, you can read it in the thread i created here.

I am on the phone right now with Sammy. First they said the phone was not capable of outputtonf video purchased via Media Hub to a TV, now they transferred me to Level 3 and said it should work. The error I get is:
TV-out not supported while application running. Phone display only.
What good is the HDMI cable and the $25 credit? While I was typing, I got hung up on while the hold music was playing. Second time!

According to Samsung support you CANNOT playback movies purchased via Media Hub and play them back via the HDMI/MHL adapter. Licensing restrictions are the main reason why. As for the "what's the point of the HDMI cable" question that I can answer with a simple response - some of us rip and encode our own videos. Those CAN be played via the HDMI cable.
Level said it is impossible, then said, yes you should be able to. I was on the phone with them again and got hung up on again when transferring me to level 3 support! WTF!

Recently I order a brand new MediaBridge HDMI cable from Amazon from a friend for use in India in a sealed box & it did not work when I attached it to the phone & my Dell laptop. What could be the reason? Is there any symbol supposed to pop up on the phone or the laptop & on hindsight I just got thinking (gave the cable back now) in case if no symbol is supposed to pop up would directly playing a video on the phone while the hdmi cable is attached make it play on the laptop??
Don't want to be a smartass or anything but I hope you're selecting HDMI as the Source on your TV.
As I mentioned I tried on my Dell laptop running Win 7....is there anything specific I needed to do besides just connecting either ends between the phone & the laptop to get the HDMI working?

I'm sure it the HDMI Micro to HDMI connection from phome to laptop will not work. Laptop HDMI should only be an output, not an input. It will work from phone to a monitor or tv. Once connected you will be prompted to make a choice on the A2 for a display mode.
I bought a Dynex cable from BB that works fine with the Atrix 2 when connected to a monitor or tv.

Thanks. Yes you are right it is a micro hdmi (phone) to regular HDMI port on the Laptop. DAYMN..they should specify to unsuspecting users like me. IMHO many people would not be aware about this.

Probably an easy question but, External Hard Disks?

Hi All
Finally been able to order a TF700 from Amazon in the UK, I'm off travelling around Europe at the end of next week and intend to take the 700 with me, my question is can I take my external 1TB drive with me and use it as storage (for films, music etc)
Thanks all in advance
Should be doable, although much depends on the power consumption of the drive -- I haven't got a portable model on hand to test it for you. A power-hungry model could either drain the battery too fast to be practical, or it may just be plain impossible to power it from the tablet, causing it to just bork out on you.
Obvisouly, a powered model would cope just fine, but that's not very practical when travelling, isn't it? I have read reports of people using external hard drives on the TF700 before, so I guess it shouldn't pose too much of a problem, though.
Off-topic: where are you going?
assuming you have the keyboard dock too, not only for the USB port but for the extra battery capacity too.
but my WD 750gb works just fine!
I'd suggest MXPlayer 'cause the stock apps suck at decoding divx and other random container formats.

Cool thanks, just ordered a Toshiba Stor.e Alu 1TB (ebay special buy) which is bus powered, should both be here on the 2nd so will plug it into the dock to check.
I am heading down to Spain as I have an apartment there then going to see where the mood takes me, I have 3 months off work (well I say off work, taking the Infinity with an RDP program and my iPhone so I can tether the data) that way I can still work from where ever I am!
The infinity + dock seems the perfect device for me, can carry it easily, brilliant battery life and the full qwerty keyboard.
I plugged a 500GB bus powered USB drive into the dock USB port and it works great!
My 2TB Western Digital MyPassport works just fine. I did format it to get rid of the silly software, though. Don't really notice any powerdrain at all.
I've somewhat accomplished this before with a 2-usb hard drive. The main usb port for transferring I plugged into the infinity, and I plugged the port for power into a portable external battery. It was recognized as another SD card on my infinity. It worked flawlessly when transferring 800MB+ files.

Yup. It works. Mine is WD 1TB, connected via USB of the dock.
I've tried plugging in a standard usb drive (8gb thumb drive) in the usb port before but I can't browse to it in the stock file browser,"external storage"just shows as empty. Do you use a special app for that?

I use a Seagate 2.5" external. It transfers fine and is recognized but playing videos using either mxplayer or bsplayer is imperfect. There is a lot of stutter. My imperfect solution is to rotate out video files on my device.

Not only is an external a great solution, and works perfectly with the dock. It also has a really nice transfer rate. I was getting over 20mb/ps transferring from my 128gb flash drive to the micro sd. I have yet to spring for a 128 sdxc for the dock, but it's on my list.
So far I tried:
- External usb 2.0 disks
- Wireless mouse
- Linksys usb to ethernet
- Usb sticks
The dock's usb port seems to accept anything: even ethernet that allows me to even use my Infinity in the basement of my house (only wired connections there)

I'm one of those people that traded in there TF201 for TF700... I know this was asked and answered early on in the TF201 threads, so I guess I just carried over from there and never bothered asking it again.
For those that care I also had success with a USB 3.0 External right away. It comes with a secondary USB to power cable but that has never actually needed to be used. The USB 3.0 is actually an internal from my laptop in a USB 3.0 case (Put a SSD in lappy ). So long story short USB 3.0 devices should also work but at 2.0 speeds.

I did the same thing with my laptop, but shortly there after, I came to realize that I wasn't using it at all in complete favor of my TF201/700.... Now I've got a lappy with a pretty 120 ssd, and not being used. Coincidentally, I have more space than that in my tablet now...
right so that we have established that external USB hdd's work, what about external dvd drives and other external devices?

I can test it tomorrow, but I would imagine the storage part of it would work. The issues you would run into is not being able to write to it, not being able to play a regular dvd movie as it would have to be mp4 formatted, and other minor issues that require software support.
We already know gamepads, keyboards, mice, flash drives, sd card readers, and other such work..

TF700T HDMI out on Samsung UE46ES8005

Hi.
I thought on sharing my findings on how i solved getting my infinity to work with my led-tv.
I have tried all kind of stuff before this but i have a stubborn samsung that doesn't want to recognize the tab.
I got some tips from within xda that infinity lacks the 5v for hdmi out so the tv can sence that something is hocked up.
i bought a Andersson HDMI Switch 4x1 that has a poweradaptor to try this out.
It wasn't an easy go by just hooking things up.
so i tried hocking my laptop up to the switch and got the picture on the tv, then i connected the tab on the second hdmi port and the infinity recognized that the hdmi was attached, i tried to switch ports with the remote to the hdmi switch but that failed, so i disconnected the cable to the laptop and VOILA i got the tv to show the tablets screen on the TV screen, i can now scale the picture and everything works great.
If i leave the switch powered on and connected to the tv i can connect and disconnect the tab without problems.
If i power of the switch i have to go through the same procedure again to fool the tv to recognize that samething is hooked up to the hdmi port.
Hope this helps some of you with the same problem and stubborn tv sets.
Best regards
Mackis

Weird. I have a powered monoprice HDMI switch connected to a Denon Receiver, which connects to my Sony TV. I've had no problems with the TF700 Infinity being recognized. I also took the Infinity on a cruise and connected it to a Samsung 720p LCD TV with no problems. I believe that this would discount the theory that the Infinity doesn't have the right HDMI signal/voltage.
I assume that you tried changing HDMI cables? Perhaps the TF700 that you have has a defective HDMI port.

That was my first guess but after i read here on xda that even the cables can be defective i bought one more, then i tried different manifactures LG and philips lcd-tv worked with the infinity without problems, so i guess i have a tv that is too new. I contacted Samsung and they are looking in to it. Not that i have high hopes, for now im a happy camper solving it this way.

Yes i know, i think its weird to, but i think its the 5v issue that my samsung model don't sence.
On the LG i have to change hdmi port with the remotecontrol to the tv for it to work or power it down and up again otherwise its not working. On the samsung lcd on my work i have no problems at all but it is older tv models. If i could get hold of some other tv model that anyone here have problems hooking up the infinity with i would be happy to try this solution and see if it works.

[Q] HDMI output very low resolution

Hi,
I've had the shield a while and I have been trying to start using the console mode, however when I use it on my LG 42" TV in the living room as soon as I go into console mode it has loads of graphical errors and this is due to it running at 1920x1082. So I thought I would try it on my Dell 2407WFP which can go up to 1920x1200, I had to purchase a DVI adapter for this to work, it works fine in both console mode and normal mode however the resolution is very low only 640x480, is this caused by HDCP at all? Or is there something else I can do to fix this, its really annoying me now.
Thanks in advance for any help

It's the cinema 3d LED TV, 42LM5800. It ran @ 1920x1080 (1080P) on both my LG and sharp TV. Yet to test my Vizio TV but I'm sure there wont be any problems there either. I'm betting it's probably the cable. I tried an offbrand one on my xbox 360 and it would only work on 720p, and even then the picture didn't look quite right. I switched it out with another cable and it bumped up to 1080, tried using the cheapo again and it wouldnt work at all on my 360 at that point, however it did work just fine on my wife's laptop. I also had a cheapo for my acer a100 tab, and it worked for a couple weeks then just crapped out on me. If you could i would try finding another HDMI cable to use and eliminate the possibility of it being the one you bought.
When you plug in your HDMI cables does your shield recognize it and attempt to switch to console mode?
Sorry for OT guys, but I need to ask and don't want to start a new thread for this sole reason.
I am willing to buy the Shield and use it as an android living room PC, connected via HDMI to a 40" 1080p TV. When I connect the devices, will the Shield output in 1080p a will it basically mirror the screen onto the TV? Because that's what I want - mirroring the device on a 1080p TV.
Thanks
