Hey guys,
I found your forum after I gave a guy my phone so he could root it but he couldn't deliver. However, when I got back the phone it took longer to boot up and after it got past the "HTC One X" screen, instead of allowing me to put in my PIN to unlock (as usual), it sent me to a blank screen showing only my current wallpaper and the task bar (with the time, power, signal, etc).
The major part of the screen is unresponsive. The three buttons below are unresponsive as well.
I'm able to pull the task bar down and when I click the "settings" button I get this message: "unfortunately the process com.android.settings has stopped"
What does this mean for my phone? Can this be fixed?
Any help would be great. I've done a bit of reading, but I'm still very new to this. The phone is an AT&T HTC One X, 1.85, running 4.0.3.
Thanks in advance.

Yes it should be fixable but we don't know what that person did to your phone.. if he never got to the point of changing the cid. You can just run the 1.85 ruu and then root it yourself if you want because its not difficult. Or if root intimidates you you cab stay stock.
If he did happen to change the cid youll have to unlock the bootloader if its not already and either flash a ROM or s-off and then ruu.
I'm sure this can seem like a lot but everything will be fine. What I need to see is the information in your bootloader. And your cid.
How to get into your bootloader: press and hold power while your phone is on until the back home and recent apps buttons blink 5 times and then shuts off. Once the screen is off. Wait 2-3 seconds and then press and hold power and volume down.
Show me the bootloader.

You're probably supercid. You'll need to unlock the bootloader and s-off. You should install the HTC drivers and fastboot and get to work. Do you want to be rooted and stuff or stock?
The reason I ask is, we will proceed differently if you just want to stay stock but if you intend to flash Roms and whatnot, we will unlock root and s-off and downgrade touchscreen firmware.

Do you have the HTC Drivers, fastboot/adb installed?
If not, Get ADB/Fastboot. Unzip and keep in a folder somewhere. Remember where. I use C:\Android myself. You can have yours wherever is most convenient.

HTC Drivers:

Once you've installed those:
Boot to Bootloader/Fastboot
Plug your phone in to your PC
Shift right click inside the folder where you keep ADB/Fastboot and click in the menu "Open Command prompt here"
Then type in command prompt: fastboot oem readcid
And show me what it says after.

Run that exe file with your phone plugged in, in bootloader/fastboot. It will, hopefully, return your phone to a working state.

Turn off the phone.
Take out the battery for 1-2 seconds and put it back in.
Hold volume down while pressing the power button.
Phone should now boot into Hboot mode. You can tell what version of Hboot and whether or not it's secured or not by looking at the top line.
It looks like the hboot interface hasn't really changed since the original G1.
You can also just go menu settings power and turn off fastboot then power off normally and boot in to hboot normal

if you're already running a custom ROM like CyanogenMod or AOKP, then hold the power button, choose restart, and choose bootloader. once it boots up into the white screen with some text, use the volume keys to move up and down, and the power key to select, and select the first option. should take you to Hboot.
but honestly the best way to get right to hboot is completely shut the phone down (or pull batter), and hold the volume down, and WHILE STILL HOLDING, press the power button. never failed for me.

I'm having issues unlocking my bootloader. I go through all the steps, get to the end and cmd prompt says its sending unlock token (0 kb)... It will not go any farther than this. Make sure you are in the boot loader first, or command won't succeed. I think command is, adb reboot bootloader if not, volume down plus power button when phone is OFF, then select bootloader in hboot, then send command to get unlock token

This is while in Bootloader mode fastboot USB. I have got the unlock_code.bin from htcdev website but it just sits on the Bootloader and says its sending unlock code and never gets the okay, never fails, just sits there. Am I supposed to just leave on there for an hour or what. I've waited at least ten minutes or more and then manually reboot from Bootloader. I have att one xl. Cid does check 11111111.

I actually get to the part where it asks to unlock it, I chose unlock via the volume rocker, then hit the power button. It does wipe data because the phone will reboot and act like I haven't set it up. I adb reboot bootloader, and it says "relocked" at the top. Any help would be great! I've done this three times now!

Had the exact same thing happen to me recently. I was able to fix by booting directly back into bootloader after clicking unlock on the phone. Was doing it to see if it was reverting to relocked immediately. Not sure if it was coincidence, but the unlock stuck when I did it.

Push and hold the "Volume Down (-) button">press the power button. Hopefully you'll boot into the Recovery Menu. If you get it, press the volume down button and when you get to the "Recovery" option his the power button.
Your bootloader has been downgraded to a froyo version and you have a gingerbread shipped phone. Your phone is incompatible with this hboot. You need to use the hack kit to flash a correct version of hboot. Or do it manually if can't get hack kit to recognise your device when it passes the main white HTC screen.

Yes it will say device not found because you're not in fastboot or booted into rom with USB debugging on. You need to manually boot to the bootloader.
If your phone is on. Press and hold power. The back home and app switch keys on the bottom of the phone will blink 5 times, the screen will go black. Let go of power and wait 2-3 seconds, then, BEFORE the screen turns back on, press and hold power and volume down until the bootloader comes on
If your phone is off just press and hold volume down and power until it boots into bootloader.
You may have trouble while your phone is plugged in so best to do this with it unplugged.
* On a side note, If you haven't read enough to know how to get into the bootloader you should REALLY not be messing around with your phone.

I'm assuming you are holding down the power and volume down keys at the same time to get into the bootloader?
Sometimes you have to hold both buttons (power button and volume down button) for 10 to 15 seconds. I've had to do this multiple times in a row to get out of a bootloop in the past.
If the phone attempts to boot and you can see the splash screen then you are not bricked yet. Bricked means nothing happens when you push the power button.

Yes. Doing that doesn't do anything until I take my fingers off, then it tries to do a normal boot and powers off again.
What command did you type exactly?
There is a fastboot command for just booting a recovery.IMG (fastboot boot recovery.img), but it wouldn't cause the problem you are having. It would just boot you into that recovery without actually flashing it.
Edit: what are your phone specs?... i.e. carrier, hboot version, etc...

Did you try what timmaaa suggested?

If what I suggested doesn't work and there's absolutely no way to get to the bootloader or get fastboot to work, you're kinda screwed. You'll probably have to try getting a jtag repair done, I think that'll be your only option.
I doubt a moderator is going to bump up a new user's status just because you need to reply more often, it doesn't really work like that.

Try holding the volume down button while the phone is booting, keep holding it and when it begins the loop again hopefully it'll get you to bootloader.

Ok i just pushed down the power and then quickly pushed down volume without pressing power and I'm in bootloader now! My device is recognized also.

Good! You need to flash a valid boot.img to your boot partition. Absolutely do not reboot the phone until you've done that.

Agreed. Unless you can get fastboot access back to overwrite your boot partition, your in a pickle. In any event, hopefully this will serve as a lesson to you concerning the detail and care you need to show when it comes to altering your phones.
