[Q] Verizon Samsung Galaxy SIII - SCH i535 - GSM doesnt work - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Folks, I need all of your help.
I have bought three Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 phones in the US. This was purchased via the corporate program. I was told this is a global phone and I cannot use GSM SIM cards if I am in India.
Verizon also told me the phone would be global only after the 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update. The phone is upgraded with the newest verzion of 4.1.2.
Now, the phones are in India. I insert the local GSM Sim (Airtel / Vodafone) and cannot seem to be make it work.
1. With Airtel SIM, I played around with the Global Network Mode and GSM and CDMA etc.. I seem to get Airtel listed as a network and when I select it, it says "unable to connect, try later". The same happens whatever I do.
1. With Vodafone SIM, I inserted the SIM, turned on, set it to Global and it picks up the network in a jiffy BUT when I make a call it says Mobile Network not available or when someone calls to this number says it's switched off, but the tower comes up and says Vodafone IN at the top but nothing happens.
I then searched XDA, I found solutions for the APN settings etc.. and the Phone Info tool to change it to Global etc.. but nothing seems to be working. I also rooted the phone, put on a Synergy ROM and still the same problem.
I called Verizon Global Support and they do their usual blah blah and says that if their SIM works and since there is no other complaint they cannot do anything about it. Local carrier support in India have no clue at all.
I have seen in the forum that some say it works in India with an Airtel SIM too but why not me. Just in case I bought a new replacement SIM from Airtel 64k and that doesnt work too.
I need urgent help since I have bought three phones and all three of them doesnt work.

Thanks for your post. I did try the steps in the link but no go. It's soooo frustrating. I get to the point to select my networks, but when I select, it says "unable to connect, try later". Could it be GSM Band problems?. I even get Airtel for a sec and then it says emergency calls only.

just check below thread and check if you have issue with imei

Hey I have the same problem. I have a Verizon Samsung SIII and I can't seem to get the data working. Voice calls work just fine. But I spent hours getting data to work, but no luck. The problem seems to the lack of APNs when you look for one. I think Verizon has locked the device in a way, even on 4.1.2, that you can only use their SIM card to "see" an APN. I'm getting furious with Verizon locking the devices.
Please let me know if you figure out a way. I'm in India for a funeral and for a very short amount of time. I need the data working so that I can stream the ceremony back home. Vzw is a sack of duesch for pulling such moves. Grrrrrrr!!!!

I got verizon GS3 working with IDEA having stock android 4.1.1. Has data, calls and sms working without any issues.
1. Rooted the phone
2. I had another android rooted phone with the working data, installed apn manager pro, converted to system app using titanium backup.
3. Backed up the apn settings to sd card using apn manager pro.
4. I had normal sim, went to idea showroom and got new microsim.
5. Installed apn manager pro on s3. Converted to system app using titanium backup. With the sd card having backed up working apn, restored the apn settings using apn manager pro.
5. Installed phone info app. Changed the preferred network type to GSM AUTO PRL.
6. RESTARTED the phone. Thats it.

Voice and text not working
I am able to get the data work. Even on stock OS 4.1.1, I am unable to make calls from verizon S3 in India. I changed the mode to Global as well GSM, but nothing works. Also i tried it with airtel and vodafone, none working. Important part, I had it working in US, with international roaming on airtel SIM. But same sim not working in India..

Voice not working on i535
Hi, Even in phone info it shows the network as Vodaone. However I am not able to make any changes in the Phone info app. Can you please guide what to do next?
Also I would like to inform that I rooted the phone and made the APN manager as the system app, with this 3g data for vodafone is working perfectly. And I see the signal bars at the top as well. Only problem is calling and texting.. Don't know what's the reason could be. Please suggest if someone else have experiences this problem.

Data won't work on Bell unlocked version for AT&T?

Hello, I bought an unlocked version of the sensation originally from bell to use on AT&T. I had an iPhone 4 which had a mini sim and went to AT&T to switch it out, they gave me a normal sim but the data didn't work. I went there today to ask them about it and they tried to manually put in the APN settings, but had no luck. Does anyone know what the problem may be? Thanks in advance.
Do you guys think this is AT&T's problem? Could it be a problem with the sim change because I got text on the new phone saying"thank you for upgrading your phone" could it have taken away the data?
Just call them and check. You should be able to add the unlimited non smartphone data for $15 and still get the same 3g speeds. Tell them you switched to a dumb phone and give the sensation imei if they ask. Their system won't be able to recognize that you are using a smartphone.
If you need apn settings let me know, the default wap.cingular should work fine.

[Q] Tmobile HTC One S on AT&T, only calls and text, no data..help

Ok
I've been trying to get this to work all day.
Spent two hours on the phone with AT&T
No luck.
What I have, my microsim from AT&T iPhone 4.
I put it in a htc one s purchased from amazon.
I can make phone calls and text, but no data.
Called AT&T.
The lady spent an hour messing around with mobile
network settings, APN settings, and I still have nada
Any ideas or help is GREATLY APPRECIATED.
I've searched various forums, etc.
Nada
I've reset phone at least 3 times.
Did the person who unlocked it do a crappy job
Would it still make calls and text if it wasn't unlocked.
Thanks.
1) APN settings. are you sure you've CORRECTLY taken care of that? use wap.cingular if you have grandfathered 3g unlimited plan, or use the "phone" apn if you are on HSPA+ plans. I know you said you tried apn settings but your problem really sounds like it originated from incorrect apn
2) are you using a EU or t-mobile based rom? I tried both and data works on both. but it disconnected periodically on a EU-based rom. When I was on the stock t-mobile rom, I popped in my simcard, deleted the original t-mobile apns and added my ATT apn, and data started working
3) even though my data works, sometimes its funky. The up and down signal would go on and off. To fix it, I need restart the mobile network (switch to wcdma only then back to wcdma/gsm auto)
I'm on TMo and my phone started acting the same as far as i know today. Unlocked and rooted, went through and deleted the bloatware yesterday. Data was working night before and been on WiFi today, but when turned WiFi off then there was no data connection.

4.5. Unless your area doesn't have good 850mhz coverage.. then you're SOL with the EU version.
Luckily most of the towers in the larger cities in my area have been upgraded.

Btread I have the US T-Mobile One S and it works great on att. I used my sim from an iPhone as well.. When you installed your sim did it ask which carrier you are on? I am using leedroid Rom and it asked. I picked att and no issues.

Able to use 3G only without physical SIM card? Network debug menu?

Is there a way to use the phone without a SIM card? I don't have LTE in my area, and I keep getting the "no SIM Error" so was thinking that the SIM was useless anyways.
On the stock ROM every time I get the SIM error, or if I remove the SIM card itself, I get no data on the phone at all. When I try to turn on Mobile Data it prompts me to insert the SIM.
On other CUSTOM or JB ROMs, I don't get the SIM error prompt but I simply get no data.
On older Sprint phones, I know you can go into the DEBUG menu to see that EVDO/3G was actually being authenticated, the handshake was negotiated, then connection type/speed/tower/hand-off status, etc. Is there such an option with Verizon phones? I'm wondering if Data is completely shut off without the SIM, or if the data connection is actually established on the network but simply blocked from being used?
PS - per recommendation I have tried using the PHONE INFO app to switch the option to NV only, but am still getting no data. Voice/Text work perfectly.

ASFAIK, the SIM does 3g and 4g. WHY? because 3g on the gs3 is ehrdp and that also requires a handshake between 3g and lte. I believe it is like using 3g tech but with the pipeline size of lte... or thats as far as I've read into it.

Thanks for the info, xicewallx. I was afraid of that, however I've read of people flashing both Sprint and Verizon variants of the SGS3 to Boost, Straight Talk (CDMA), Verizon Pre-Paid which all I assume do not use LTE/SIM. I presume this means that the SGS3 can certainly use 3G without the need of the SIM card. I'm looking for a way to default to this on the SGS3 for us poor folk who do not have the luxury of LTE yet and have to deal with the SIM error until Verizon/Samsung fixes it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I was able to get to a debug screen using the IOTHiddenMenu option (through Any Cut) but it simply stated that EVDO was in "sleep state." I wasn't able to figure out how to get it to start a connection yet.

So get a new phone? That one is obviously faulty. Go get a free replacement. You have to live with it for 2 years. I wouldn't want a faulty device for a week let alone 2 years.

Are you in a poor signal area? Only time I've received the "No Sim" error was at my parents where the signal is crap. As for using it without the sim card, doubt that's possible since the sim is used for authentication if I'm not mistaken.
hello,
if i understand correctly, the sim card in the S3 is basically the same as all the previous world phones, meaning its just RUIM card. The MEID and IMEI are on the phone, the card it comes with is just basically a storage device in simple terms. can someone who has access to another verizon active S3 sim try putting the card into their phone and checking the IMEI that the phone reports? does swapping the cards change the IMEI in other words. I do not think it will, but interested to know for sure.
i just started playing with one of these, but i feel realy confident you can get non 4G services to work without a sim in it.
cheers,
disco

You have it just about backwords. The sim is the real identifier on vzw 4g devices. You can take a working authorized sim and use it to activate another 4g Verizon phone and it will activate under the phone number associated with the sim.

There is still an ESN /MEID that the network uses to identify the phone for the CDMA side of the network. The process is all handled by the LTE SIM on LTE phones, though.
OP: You have a broken phone. The no-SIM error is not something that goes away. Take it to a store and get a new SIM and/or order a replacement.

im gonna have to dig in some more i am still not convinced the card is not a ruim card. like the other sprint and verizon world fones the imea is in the fone im pretty sure, until you instroduce another networks actual gsm card. i still the card it comes with is a simple ruim that holds the login info and other data, etc, well you know what ruim is.
does anyone have a service manual or white papers on this one yet? i would love to read through them.
thanks again bro

I'm still looking for an answer to this if anyone has any suggestions. Any way to get 3G without a SIM card?
Did you ever get a new phone from Verizon? It seems like an issue with your phone, not the network.
I have been trying something similar along the way as I have been able to get rock solid data by switching to EvDo only using the Phone Info app.
I gave determined I am connecting to a US Cellular tower when I have solid data.
But while in EvDo only I cannot send or receive calls or texts.
I am looking for a way to enable calls and text while in EvDo only mode.
Not trying to highjack just thought this is somewhat related.

New phone and new SIM from Verizon seems to have made the problem less apparent, but it still happens, especially when driving through areas where reception is a bit spotty. It's really become an issue as I rely on getting emails for business, especially while traveling, and I don't get notifications of new emails if I have no data service which I don't become aware of until I actually look at the phone. Missed a couple of important emails/meeting invites because of this already...

I flashed a VZW GS3 to Sprint. 3G data is working fine w/o a SIM card. If I put a non activated VZW card, data doesn't work obviously.
The trick in getting this to work is to use QPST to configure Profile 0 and Profile 1. When flashing to Sprint or Boost, you must also load a Sprint PRL into the device using QPST.

I have called Motorola, AT&T, and ST. Nobody knows nothing. Any ideas on what to do?

Did you check to make sure your APN settings came along for the ride? If they are in there properly, you may need to factory reset and then re-add the APNs.

Yes, the APN settings remained the same. ST just called me with new APN settings but I could not input them because ST says my phone must be unlocked to do so. Bummer.

AT&T will give you the unlock code if you call for it.

Thanks, I tried that. They won't give me the code because my "provider" is Straight Talk and Straight Talk won't give it to me because my "provider" is AT&T. This would be called a run around.
I'm on straight talk and my phone not unlocked. I typed in the APN settings and the only thing i cant do is send mms. Was apn settings grayed out?

I have problem on network disconnect and then show red cross sign next on battery indicator...
Tried manual search network, first network avalaible on 2G and then switched to 3G, but after few minutes the network became unavailable again..
Flashed with Searet radio.img also didn't help.
Currently my stock ics system version 67.21.125.MB865.ATT.en.US

Signal/Network problem

Hi guys,
I've been having this problem with my N5.
Its a d820 model, unlocked and rooted.
I have no signal, cant register to the network either.
I can use wifi with no problem too.
I changed the micro sim card with other carriers, same issue. I asked for a new micro sim to my carrier too (not cut), but still getting the same problem.
It's worth mentioning that the micro sim works flawlessly. Im using it everyday on an HTC One S and signal and data works perfectly.
When I first get the simcard on the N5, it asks for a reboot, after it comes back up, it shows strong signal, but I can't make any call or receive, no messages either.
After a few minutes, the signal goes down and it shows only emergency calls.
Going into mobile networks and searching for my carrier takes quite some time, but no matter how many times I try to select my carrier,it always comes back with not able to register in the network.
I did a factory reset, and went back to stock, and then performed the system updates to 4.4.4.
I flashed a couple of radios as well, but no luck.
The IMEI shows well, and its the same that shows on the box, so I guess no problems there with a corrupt IMEI.
Has anyone else had any problem like this? Any suggestions?
I've been reading some threads here, and I still have to try a different kernel/ROM, but if anyone else knows of a similar situation, I would appreciate any suggestions.
May be it has something to do wid preferred network...
If u use 3g go to dialpad
Type
*#*#4636#*#* phone info
Select modem as wcdma only...
If u use lte select lte only... See if this works
I think I already tried that, but cant remember for sure
Will give it a shot, thanks
Is the phone second hand?
Have you checked if the IMEI is blocked by the network?
sounds like you bought a used phone that has been blacklisted. if blacklisted, your phone wont work on any US carrier, and many Canadian carriers.
Yes its a second hand phone, and I don't know if it is blacklisted on USA, but Im in South America, so that shouldnt be a problem
And there are no carriers here working with N5 so they cant blacklist the IMEI either
(This doesnt mean that the phone doesnt work here, actually, my wife has another N5 that works like a charm here)

the carriers dont have to work with the n5 to blacklist it. in other words, they can blacklist any phone that connects to their network. as soon as you connect to the network, they know your imei and other info about your phone. anyways, they blacklist your imei, so when your phone tries to connect, it cant. the agreement that carriers have in the US and Canada, could possibly be for all of the americas, or, in south america, they could have their own blacklist.

googling, i found that carriers worldwide are sharing blacklists.
The GSMA, an international association of wireless carriers, also keeps a database that wireless carriers worldwide could check to prevent stolen phones from being reactivated on their networks.

I will check on that, I think I can just call my carrier and ask if that IMEI is blacklisted or not

yup, thats the best thing to do. the people that first answer the phone, customer service, probably wont be able to help, maybe someone in tech. or, use this website to check(there art other sites as well).. http://swappa.com/esn
Well I just checked. IMEI not blacklisted on my carrier, also checked with swappa, not blacklisted either.
I used the *#*#4636#*#* to select wcdma as well as other options there, but still no go.
Also, under Mobile network settings, changed the preferred network type to LTE, 3G and 2G, but no luck
Tried Choose automatically the network, but still getting the message that its unable to register to the network right now and that I should try again later
I guess Im left with flashing some other ROM/kernel to see if it helps, unless someone has any other suggestions

call your provider first, problem can be on their end.

also, what kind of nexus 5 is it, a d820 or d821? it would make a difference signal-wise. ones for north america, ones for europe. honestly, i have no idea which you would need http://www.phonearena.com/news/Differences-between-the-two-Nexus-5-models-D820-and-D821_id48985
I don't know if the problem is with the carrier, since I'm using the very same simcard with another phone and I have data and network with no problem.
The phone is d820, but I know it works here (my wife has the same one), network 2g and 3g work well here, LTE is the only thing that won't work here with this phone but I don't care about that
I'll keep looking just in case, and I guess tomorrow I'll flash different ROM

If the problem is wid radio flashing a different rom won't matter ..
Have u tried flashing a factory image ?
I know flashing a new ROM wont help with radio, but I've seen that using *#*#4636#*#*, going into phone information and then Select Radio Band, gives me an error and force closes.
I've seen some threads about that, and someone saying that it was working on a CM ROM, so I was thinking of trying that in order to be able to select the radio band and see if that helps.
About the factory image, yes, I used the google images to go back to stock, and then performed the system updates.
Well I flashed Slim Rom, and was able to get into *#*#4636#*#* to change radio band. Tried them all, no change.
Played around with the preferred networks and no luck either.
I'm officially out of ideas, but I'll keep digging around to see what I can find.
Any suggestions welcome.
Also, I know that there is a known issue with the GPS signal on some Nexus 5, and there are a few videos on Youtube showing how to fix it (basically opening the back of the phone, and sticking a piece of paper under the connector).
Does anyone know if there is something similar happening with the radio? Does anyone have a photo of the phone showing which part would be the antenna?
One additional thing I noticed.
If I switch, or just take out and reinsert the micro sim, the phone asks for a reboot. After doing that, when the phone boots up, I see I have network (full bars), going into mobile operators, I can see my carrier, and I can register too. But I cant make or receive any calls or messages.
During this 10 minutes that I have this sort of fake signal, if I go into *#*#4636#*#* and phone info, I can see my carrier, but it doesn't show my phone number. Weird.
Lg nexus 5 network issue
i am facing the same issue with exus 5 .In my hometown in India, the phone simply shows "Emergency calls only" and shifts to normal working mode with full network coverage once i travel to other parts of my state (parts which probably has a better signal strength ,i dont know ).i have tried out changing the sim card and a factory data reset ..Both didnt help ..

Has anyone been able to track down the issue and get it resolved? I'm facing the same situation, and almost taking it to an authorized LG support so that they can change the motherboard.
