After going through 6 Galaxy Nexus due to screen/radio issues I will be receiving a S III next week. I'm happy about the upgraded hardware, but I have been on JB for a month and have always loved that AOSP look and feel. I'll give TouchWiz a try, but I already know I won't like it.
What's the best JB/AOSP ROM for the S3 right now? From my research I'm leaning towards CM10 (I've been running it for a week on my Nexus). Are there any major problems or bugs? Stability issues?

Question is: I am liking the Galaxy S4 a lot and I don't have an upgrade available until Oct/2014. Is there any ROM for the S3 that is similar to the Galaxy S4? or does anyone knows of any specials anywhere where I can upgrade now instead of waiting so long?

Remember you can only get so close to the s4 software, as the hardware is entirely different, the software is usually based on the hArdware.but there is the s4 voice,s4 launcher, there's a couple of roms similar to the s4 can't think of any rite now but it's very easily found in the forum.

I think the major issue is the S4 is 4.2 based and our devices are still on 4.1. I remember when I was on my Incredible we got sense 3 and 3.5 ROMs once our gingerbread leak came out, so I'm guessing we'd need a 4.2 based touchwiz kernel for our device before we could get the S4's 4.2 based ROM ported to our device.
Even if we get 4.2 (it would be about 8-9 months from now) there's no guarantee it would work out that way. Many of our devs have already moved on to the S4 or other devices so they might not be interested in porting that for us. It may not even be possible - consistencies don't always apply in the technology world, even if we have a 4.2 kernel there might be some other reason why a port isn't possible.

So what ROM would be the most similar to the one on the S4? I am running CleanRom 6.2 and I like it but is there any other option?

It is not as simple as having 4.2 kernel plus you have to better your explanation as we have Google AOSP 4.2 just not touchwiz 4.2. It is more to do with the hardware as it is easier to port from phones with similar hardware then it is to port from a phone with different specs. The best alternative is to port the apps and make an app like windows 8 launcher and Xperia Z launcher. So there isn't a "might be " there is another reason and that is hardware inconsistencies.

Your best bet is to use a stock-ish MF1 based rom (cleanrom isn't up to date) and find + install a S4 apps package compatible with the S3. The S4 launcher and clock works fairly well on our phones. I don't think there are any roms that aim to mimic the S4 experience exclusively. They all have different theming elements with S4 apps here and there.

Sure, no problem.
The reason we're able to have a working 4.2 kernel for AOSP is because we're not reliant on Samsung's kernel source for that side of development. AOSP is completely open source as opposed to touchwiz which has proprietary framework that's closed source.
You mention hardware differences. I know things have changed drastically since GB, so perhaps the argument I'm about to make is invalid. On the Incredible we got roms from the Runnymede which had 100% completely different hardware. It had a chipset which was many generations ahead yet devs still managed to get Sense 3.5 roms running on a device which was not intended to run anything beyond Sense 1.0. It wasn't possible til we had a GB leak made for our phone (still sense 1.0). This is due to proprietary sense framework built in at the kernel level which the devs relied on for porting - they needed the updated 2.3 version of the sense bits. I know touchwiz isn't sense, so I could be making a bad comparison here, but saying "the hardware is too different" isn't a valid reason for porting to not be possible. It could be a very similar setup. I'm not familiar enough with touchwiz to be able to make that distinction though.
These Sense 3.5 roms were marred with several issues which ultimately made them impractical to use as a daily driver. This was mainly due to how outdated the incredible was and that it simply didn't have the resources to run the software adequately. They did get it working really well considering the limitations. It's also interesting to note that the development of the incredible still continues to this day with unofficial CM 10.1 roms. It's pretty amazing what these devs are actually capable of. It's just about getting the right dev interested enough to invest the time doing it.

True the sense 3 and 3.5 wasn't really good. We do have a Note 2,MIUI, and Sense 5 port for our devices and will likely to get ubuntu touch as soon as it is stable. Problem is that most of the developers don't have that much free time to attempt an international S3 or an US S4 port so they do what they can with the time they have.

I definitely agree; time is a huge issue. I'm assuming it's much more work porting a 4.2 based rom than it is a 2.3 based one. There's a good chance it's not worth the time investment considering the potentially buggy outcome.
Also, I apologize for assuming you didn't have any experience with earlier phones. Your join date threw me off

I learn fast as the S3 is my first android device and within 3 days of buying the phone I rooted it and started flashing roms. I had ample opportunities to root/jailbreak my previous phones but waited until developers come up with better methods. As for the opening poster's question he will have to get the S4 launcher app and flash some of the S4 apps.

It's unfortunate that I purchased this phone because of how active the forums were at the time but now it seems the activity has slowly dropped. I use too many apps on my phone to be stuck with 4.0.4 Stock. Using all of the CMs up to 11 and the recent JB port made the phone seem worthwhile but not being able to use the Speakerphone (which I use on a daily basis) makes me want to chcuk the phone at a wall.

I am using the CM 10.0 Stable build with better uptime than stock ICS Battery Life in impacted by Google Now, but is holding out well. Phone is paid for and functional. I will stick with it until I find a Quad Core phone around $100 ( ...Samsung T399 Light?).
There may be some other Dual Core phones with better CM ROMs, but at this point I am happy with the Blaze....
Well I'll probably still hang around here but I took advantage of the Blackberry trade-in and upgraded to the Nexus 5. Now that my Blaze won't be my daily driver I'd be willing to do some testing when new roms drop.
Hey Guys , so after selling my Xiaomi Redmi 2 a week back I was looking for a new phone with great community support. I am getting the used Nexus 5 (32GB) for around 80$ in my country India. So my question is the device still worth it ?
How is the battery life , camera (both front and back) and gaming performance with nougat roms ? Can I get the camera samples ?

I believe the new Pixel camera wont function on the N5 due to some technical difficulties and hardware limitations, and the Nougat ROMs are all ports since there was no official release for the N5, which has a limitation regarding CDMA, I.E. - Sprint and Sprint MVNOs will NOT work on any of the Android 7 ROMs. As for battery life, the N5 was never known to be very good in this department, although many custom kernels address this issue, amd as far as the N5 rear camera, lets just say it was always said that it could have been better, and now, 4 years after the release of the N5, it is definitely obsolete. But the N5 was a phone aimed to give flagship performance at a bargain price, so corners HAD to be cut in places... No SD card is one more such area. My thoughts are this.... It has a Snapdragon 800, 2Gb RAM, and either 16 or 32Gb memory... These 3 facts are the biggies, and the N5 STILL outperforms almost ALL bargain phones today. Just the processor alone makes it worth the money, as well as the cordless charging, unlocked BL, and MultiROM custom recovery. One last thing though, the N5 was made back when the OS was less than 1Gb, much less, so you could install lots of system apps, the current Android 7 OS is barely under 1Gb WITHOUT any of the bigger GAPPS zips. The N5 is capped at 1Gb for your OS files, sooooo, you wont be able to flash an OS/GAPPS that is over 1Gb in size, you might want to take that into consideration before you buy a phone which still outperforms most new non-flagship devices, but is nontheless still obsolete. i will say go for it.. The only thing i had against the phone was its battery.. in the stock os, battery life is terrible.. But since flashing the unofficial hammerhead caf lineage os by phoval, i hav started loving the phone again coz the battery life has become manageable.. i plan to keep it atleast till 2019.. @Battlecreed5

I'm a long time user but getting really annoyed with the worsening battery life. Where can I find out more about unofficial hammerhead caf roms and how to install them. Does it allow using Xposed?
Switched on My N5 after a long time. It still runs smoother & faster than some of my 2016 mid-range devices. I'm loving the performance:victory:. For me the only con is it's camera(Lol I didn't bought N5 for camera) & battery backup (managing somehow):silly: The device is good but you can get better devices than this at this time!!:highfive:

Agreed, changing to a battery conservative ROM will help, as will a custom kernel. Unfortunately I made too many performance enhancements with Ex Kernel, like over clocking the CPU from 2.2 to 2.3, which negated any battery saving settings. Now I just Fast Charge it and let Ex Kernel do its thing in Battery Saver mode when it gets low.
I just did the same thing - last month I bought a N5 for dirt cheap and it runs great. I just yesterday put PureNexus ROM on it so that I can have 7.1.1. I am amazed at how smoothly it runs. While it will not replace my N6 as my daily driver, it is a more than capable phone still.

Ok, here we go. The Nexus 5 Android Development section of the forums is the best source of information for that. Here you will find popular original ROMs like PureNexus, Resurrection Remix, Nitrogen OS, and more. As to which one to use, that is kind of a personal preference. Each ROM offers a unique experience.
Additionally, more ROMs can be found in the Nexus 5 Original Android Development section of the forums. Here you will find ROMs based on other ROMs, primarily stock-like ROMs like LineageOS (previously Cyanogenmod), as well as custom recoveries and kernels.
You can also stick with stock, 6.0.1 is available directly from Google - it is a nice upgrade over your 5.1.1 stock setup.
If you are unfamiliar with flashing ROMs, might I suggest starting with this guide on how to unlock your bootloader (which you probably have already done since you have root), how to install a custom recovery like TWRP. Once this is done, you are open to the world of customization.

Visit each ROMs thread. Watch YouTube reviews. Or just flash some for yourself and try different ones out. I loved cyanogenmod nut haven't tried out LineageOS yet. I'm on PureNexus on this N5 I am currently using because a lot of people on XDA recommended it.
What kind of thing now are you looking for in a ROM?
Something that would give me more battery life and yet be stable. I also use xposed which may be a hindrance as it only works with pure stock Android.

As xposed is not currently available to Nougat, you'll probably be best sticking with a Marshmallow based ROM, maybe even stock.
I can tell you that a ROM like Pure Nexus has a lot of features built into the ROM similar to what many modules from xposed offer - for me, it is a no brainer to have the text in place of a battery icon in the status bar. Also, Nougat has a restart built-in to the ROM, so that solves the other problem I had with stock Android. Just give it a whirl!
I just tried a couple ROMs for the Nexus 5 and was not too impressed. Does anyone have a suggestion for something minimalist, clean, but I can customize from there? I got used to this Nova Launcher and would rather use that, then try to find some developers' Coolest ROM ever creation. Since there is no official 7.0+ from Google, I can't just install as Stock ROM. That seems to be the problem.
Anyone know of a close to stock 7.0+ ROM for Nexus 5?

I use Paranoid Android for about almost a year after Lineage discontinued its support for Nexus 5, Rooted but not heavy contained with customization, can last half a day (I do not game on my phone) also security patches is not ideal since the last update of PA was like months un-updated late
