Hi all
Hopefully this is not another "multitasking" thread regarding Sense ROMs.
I run Viper 2.1.0 and generally I am very happy with the multitasking. I rarely notice apps that I am actively using closing down without my say-so. The only slight frustration I have is with the HTC web browser. I do like it - it's super smooth - but it also seems so aggressive at "closing" background tabs that so often you flick between them to find it's having to reload. Also a bit annoying that it sometimes doesn't seem to remember where you were on the page.
This is sometimes just annoying but can be especially bad if a website has a "pop-up" window for you to fill stuff out on and then when you're done with that and go back to the previous page it's having to reload and perhaps lose some entered data.
Long story short - do we have any control over the memory management within apps like the HTC browser? Or is this simply too low-level?
Thanks
James
P.S. If a moderator could fix my fat-fingered attempt to spell "Browser" in the thread title I would appreciate it. I am not expecting them to permanently fix my fat-fingered nature...

You should be able to edit it, by going to Edit and Advanced.
But for the original question, most browsers (including Chrome Beta on CM10.1) reload tabs when not in use. It doesn't always happen, but it also occurs when you have other apps open other than the browser as well, which is probably why the browser gets less RAM and focuses that RAM on a single (or two) tabs.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong though, but that seems to be how it works for me.

You are quite correct, sir. Thank you.
And perhaps you are correct on the other statement - I have tried other browsers and just felt the HTC one is a bit more hasty in killing background tabs.

I kinda looked, but I couldn't find any mention of this. I am running Hero beta4 and just happen to run the tutorial. What do you know, its the Rosie UI, exactly as it appears in all those youtube videos. Except its running on my phone. I kind of thought the person in the youtube video was running Rosie.....it appears that all they were doing is running the tutorial off the Hero build.
It was stated by Haykuro that the videos were just the tutorial. He was trying to make them work for us before all the crap happened.
I installed then unistalled the herob4 build, the facebook stuff crashed and no UI and my ethics were eating away at my soul/ lol not really, kinda...idk...did xdan aplogize? i know the fake roger rom guy won't....does xda have an IRC? it should have a built in jave one...i'm gunna go find out

haykuro has video up of him actually running rosie on his g1

Myself, I kind of like the Hero build. I really really like the browser. I think a simple tap in-tap out approach to surfing works best. Some consider the lack of the zoom controls a flaw; I consider it a blessing.
Initially, there were many force closes, but after many reboots, they have mostly gone away and the phone is actually getting snappy. The personalize screen still force closes. The social apps work, except twitter.
Oh, and the browser is I guess broke...some kind of rendering error on most pages..I really don't want to re-flash

yeah, I've seen that too. Let me clarify since I obviously mis-spoke enough to cause confusion. I'm didn't mean to imply that Haykuro wasn't running Rosie, he obviously had control of the phone. I was just realizing that the Rosie demos were actually already on the Hero build. They're nice to watch.
I really like the visual bookmarks and panning tabs of this build. The rom in general is super sweet. BUT...I cannot get the browser to work. This is a major bummer. Maybe someone significantly more skilled than I will sort this out.
browser seems to be working fine for me on Beta 4.
My biggest problem with this ROM is bluetooth not working...I can't sync it with my car anymore and can't use the handsfree features in the car.
But I HATE the way the older ROMs look...the Black status bar at the top is AWESOME!

How exactly is your browser malfunctioning? Force closes or something else?
When i visit mobile pages, everything is great. But as soon as I try to visit a desktop version of a site, then it gives an error. The error message is actually part of the page, and it says:This page contains the following errors: error on line 219 column 26.....xmlparseEntityRef: no name.
The page has been loaded up until first error.
actually, the browser seems to work on wi-fi. But on edge, it will give you the parsing error when loading non-mobile pages. That is odd. I have checked APN settings and they seem ok.
Man, I loathe having to go back to an earlier ROM, I so love the way your history looks in this browser.

I would like to know if browser web pages can be cached some kind of way so they don't reload every time you press the back button. It sucks up so much data for no reason. Also I would like to know if there is a way to make the keyboard spell out I'll automatically rather than spelling ill every time. Are these problems able to be fixed in settings or does the rom have to made that way?

Well, give the mediocre RAM on our phones, I doubt that caching is possible.
Also, caching would still cause a delay because of the need to seek & fetch.
I think you added ill to the personal dictionary because I'll comes up automatically for me.. Have the spell check option enabled too (In settings).
Thanks for the reply but no ill is not in my personal dictionary. And opera mobile and other browsers cache web pages. I think the stock browser works good so I would like to use it over any other one.

I also told you to turn on spell check. This will fix the problem with 'ill'.

I don't really know if anyone has had a similar issue but I figured I'd try to at least not feel completely alone. Without fail, if I navigate to www.grantland.com on my phone it will "load" about halfway and then crash back to home. I've found the stock browser com.android.browser does this on some sites but obviously not all. I'm guessing that it is something that their website is attempting to do that the browser doesn't exactly like. It also happens on Dolphin HD. I've attempted to logcat the error, but either I'm not trying to capture the right information or it just doesn't want to give it to me.
I've tried "logcat WebCore:V *:S" "logcat browser:V *:S" and "logcat com.android.browser". I believe the first two are aiming to capture any javascript that is happening. At any rate the only information I could get is on the last version. I've posted that on pastebin here http://pastebin.com/rjgDHT4e. There is a longer version of the logcat, but this was about the only worthwhile information I could find.
I'm running AOKP Milestone 6 Build 5. It has also happened on CM9.1 R7 and R8
From what I've read it could be just a general bug in the android browser
I *hope* it happens to everyone else and not just me, but there's always the chance that I'm completely off the reservation and one step closer to breaking my phone.
Looks like it crashed in libIMGegl.so -- so, at least for me under Boat Browser it seems to be pretty low level.
It doesn't surprise me that most browsers behave the same as most reuse the sysyem-supplied rendering engines.

I kinda figured that on the browsers. Same thing with SMS apps. Basically just an add on to the base app for more functionality or options. I presume since it is fairly low level its just something I'll have to deal with unless I figure out a way to delve in to that. Experience in that area isn't high. Always looking to learn though.

While not all website operators are receptive, reminding them that mobile access is critical to their business and there are more Android devices out there than iPhones sometimes precipitates change.
Hey all! I just only got a One S 2 weeks back, and it's a beautiful beast of a phone, compared to my old Nexus S (although I do miss stock Android...)
Anyhow, here in Canada we're still slogging away on 4.0.3., and the awful multitasking is KILLING me. There's no sign that an update is coming soon, and I'd rather not install a custom ROM. So question is: is there a non-root fix for 4.0.3.'s terrible multitasking? Alternatively: is there a way to get the 4.0.4. update on my Virgin Mobile Canada One S?

I have no experience of the One but can highly recommend SwipePad, which is generally recognised as being the best mulitasking app out there. Try the free version that lets you place your most used apps in on 4*4 grid which you open from any other app just by sliding your finger inwards from a user defined spot. The "recent tasks" add on is what you really want though and is well worth the dollar!? it costs.
Multitasking made fun.

After looking into this, if I understand it correctly, it's not at all what I want. 'Recent tasks' seems to launch specific actions from within specific apps, while you're in another app.
Again, that's not what I want. The HTC One devices pre-4.0.4. aggressively kills any apps not on your screen for more than a minute. So if I'm on facebook, and open a weblink (thereby opening Chrome), when I finish with the weblink and try to go back to Facebook, Facebook has to reload from scratch because it was closed while I was in Chrome. And that's crap.
this has been discussed to death and none of the fixes or tweaks really work. it's a really frustrating Sense issue which renders the possibilities of this phone absolutely useless (thanks HTC!). your only solution is to flash a rom that's not based on Sense.
I've seen in another thread that an RUU has been made available from another Canadian company which upgrades to 4.0.4. I'm new to the world of HTC, and RUUs as well. Is this something that I can just run, unrooted and on stock recovery?
unfortunately, no. don't get your hopes up for the official HTC JB update either, i really doubt they fixed the issue there (i bet it's even worse). the only way is root, custom recovery and non Sense based (stock) roms (like this one, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1954276), i'm afraid.

If that don't do, nothing will.
It removes app limits
I know people were making fun of iOS for not having a true multitasking usability, such as having an app opened then switching to something else then coming back to the "minimized" app only to find it lose previous place and just reload or reset.
Android does the same thong for me, this is especially annoying when reading a very long tread on Tapatalk, such as one of the 500+ topics, when I am in the middle around 200 and have to check sonethong, just a few minutes later app resets to main screen, losing the place on thread.
Maybe there is a setting somewhere like setting the app with High Priority? Is this due to the way app is programmed?

I also get annoyed with Tapatalk, but I'm surprised it resets after a while. I was under the impression Android did have multitasking.

Doesn't Samsung phones have true multi (Dual) tasking? And also some mini apps and floating windows such as Mobo Player counts as true multi tasking right?

I am not dissing android by any means, it has come a long way, but I am trying to find out if these things (like Tapatalk) is actually programmed that way or is it something that's caused by the way Android handles the app?
It's not just Tapatalk, there are few other apps that do the same thing, I just can't remember off top of my head but I just learned to live with those, now if I am on tapatalk I just make sure I finish that particular page of posts, then remember the page number and go back to it next time. The problem with TT is there are no alternatives, which sucks. I even think there should be a tapatalk Desktop version or a website for browsers, how cool would that be?
