You need to do a factory reset, wipe Cache, and dalvik. Then flash the ROM. The Aroma Installer for the ROM also gives you the option to wipe cache and dalvik during the install. I do both. It doesn't hurt anything to do the double wipe.
Just make sure that you DO NOT chose the wipe data option on the opening screen of TRWP. You'll end up with a brick.

what do you mean by wipe in twrp launch

That's correct. DO NOT SELECT WIPE DATA ON THE FIRST SCREEN OF TWRP RECOVERY.

Wiping internal memory

Hello. I use Samsung Captivate smartphone.
When I chose "wipe data" in CWM menu (while installing new rom), it does not wipe it... does anyone know why?
thank you.
wipe data, wipe dalvik cache, wipe everything just to be safe
and when you boot your phone, do a factory reset

What do you mean does wipe? How's your new rom installation result? For custom rom it is needed to wipe otherwise you'll get a boot loop

When you wipe everything, you should have phone with fully blanc internal memory right?

New ROM is working well, but sometimes it is working slow... and sometimes Dialer is exiting when i want to type digits.
What cwm are you using? I'm on an atrix but I know some cwm on the atrix do not wipe properly and we have to use fastboot to wipe. Not sure how that works on your device.

Dalvik cache after flashing stock

I flashed the stock AT&R ROM with Odin.
After setting back up and reinstalling apps I got an error during a market install saying there was not sufficient space for install.
I researched and found that some people have gotten this and remapped the cache to the SD card and it may be an issue with the Dalvik cache needing to be cleared.
After the flash of stock I did not restore phone to defaults via the stock recovery menu (vol up/vol dn/pwr). So I have now done that and am in the process of reinstalling again but it got me thinking...
If the only way to clear the Dalvik cache is to use CWM, then how to you maintain Stock (to get AT&T updates) because you need CWM to clear cache after flashing?
Or am I just severely confused??

To answer your question. Flash cwm in odin, clear dalvic cache. Then flash stock recovery. Done!!

What is the latest version of CWM?

Ive recently ran into a problem where every time I installed a rom my Wi-Fi doesn't work. No matter what do( wipe davlik, wipe cache, wipe device) nothing seems to work. Plus if I reboot in CWM it boots right back into cwm. I'm currently on v5.8.3.4

You can flash any ROM any time. Make sure you do a factory reset. For better results, boot into cwm recovery and perform the following.
Factory reset
Go to mounts & storage. Format /system, /boot
Flash ROM, gapps
Flash kernel (optional)

Do you mean that as long as I do the CWM reset and everything, I can downgrade from 4.2.1 to 2.3?

Yes you can. But do you really want 2.3?I wouldn't do that even in dreams. I may go back to 4.1.2. Nothing before that.

I mean so I can get 4.1 for the sense ROM, so I do
Wipe Data/Factory Reset
Install Zip let's say 2.3 and that's it?

Did you do a full system wipe with the advanced wipe options to format your system and data partitions before flashing your ROM?

Boot to recovery, if you have TWRP, select the "wipe" option, then select "advanced wipe", then select your system partition and your data partition(do not select any other partition), then swipe the slider to wipe, then go back to main screen in TWRP and select "install" and flash your ROM like you normally would, after it flashes wipe cache and dalvik then reboot and see what happens.
