[Q] Rooting with TWRP - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
this might be a stupid question, but can I root my device with TWRP? All How-to's say to use CWM and the SuperSU zip is also called CWM-SuperSU-v0.94.zip. Can I also flash this file via TWRP?
Thanks!

Its Just That Cwm Came Out First Oh So Long Ago.... I Think Most People Tend To Stick With What They Know Best. As The Old Saying Goes, "if It Aint Broke, Dont Fix It."
Doesnt Mean TWRP Isnt As Good... Just That A Lot Of People Started Out With CWM, Most Devs Use This In Their Roms And All The Tutorials Are On How To Instal CWM...
Its Personal Choice As You Can Flash Whatever Recovery You Want...

Allright, thanks!

[Q] flashed wrong kernal on my xoom 3.1

I am new to this posting and asking questions. I have a xoom and rooted it and updated it with 3.1 and then I went and updated it with the new rom which came out the other day. I did something studpid and didn't wait for the resolution to the sdcard not being seen after flashing the new deodex rom. I looked on the kernal manager and when I what I thought was the latest kernal I decided to flash it. I now can only get to recovery mode and I don't want to make another mistake. Can someone tell me if I can safely do a wipe data/factory reset? Will that get me back so I can flash the deodex rom back? You dev guys are really awesome and I really appreciate all of your work. Thank you for your support.

If you can get to recovery, just re-flash the rom, it includes its own kernel.
Ok I will and let you know if I am successful. Thank you
I tried to use recovery but my xoom won't see the sd card. I have adb running but really am afraid to use it without some help. Don't want to brick my xoom. I have the kernal zip but don't 1.4.4 and thought if I could flash the kernal to my xoom that would maybe fix it. I read somewhere that you shouldn't flash a zip file, so I don't know what to do. any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Please don't flash any xip file through adb! Why not go into RomManager app and look for an earlier version of recovery, maybe 3.0.2.5, and flash that. A good recovery should allow you to flash from your sdcard through clockwork mod recovery.
I can't get to the rom manager app. Am I missing something? The OS won't boot up and I only have version 4 of the clockwork recovery. What should I do?

There is your problem, you did not read the warnings...DO NOT USE CWM 4.
Grab Recovery Image (solarnz-R4c-100611-1150) FLASHED THROUGH FASTBOOT from this post.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074979
Fastboot flash it, if you don't know how read the post or read my sig. Once you have a working recovery, try my post above.

Flash the .img file as bwcorvus says, not the .zip.
Take your time.
OK, Thank you very much,,, I will be more careful in the future. I am back up and running the new rom with an older recovery. That taught me a good lesson never to install an earlier version of a kernal and never to try and flash a .zip file from adb. Thank you for the instructions. Is there a book for "adb for dummies"? My name should be in it...
thank you again...
Np, glad you got it working. And guess what? You got to learn something .

There is actually an ADB tutorial somewhere on this site...seriously, do a search. It had a lot of great information. I like to know what I'm doing...it makes me more nervous to just blindly follow instructions with something like this, but I'm still mostly blind (sigh).

[Q] How do I update the ClockWork Recovery?

First of all, yes, this question has been asked, but in different forums for different phones.
I would like to know how to upgrade my clockwork recovery from 5.0.8.0 to the newest version. Is it just a matter of flashing a zip from sd IN recovery?
Thanks!
Download rom manager from the market. It will update recovery to the latest version.

Thanks. I started Rom Manager, and it said I don't have root acheived, which I do. SuperUser did not ask for a request from this app... So I ignore that warning, and choose flash clockworkmod recovery, and it downloads, but says it cannot complete the request.
Edit:
I found a download for 5.0.2.0 img file that I can just flash on HBOOT. Thanks guys.

Yes you need to be rooted inorder to use ROM Manager properly.
Don't use ROM Manager, it's ****. Best way is to use fastboot and do it manually

Can u detail it out a little? Which rom did u try to install & post the link if possible.
I am asking this coz most of the custom rom threads would already have instructions on how to flash them.

Hope it's safe if it's definitely for ur device.
Ok let me get into this straight, they havent elobrated things on flashing.
So get into twrp mode and take a nandroid backup for things to be safe. If not familiar with nandroid backup, go to advanced option in that twrp and select backup.
It's best u wipe data & cache before flashing the rom. U can select that option in twrp.
So the next step is to flash the rom, place the rom package in sdcard, in twrp screen select install zip from sdcard and select the rom file.
PS: I am not familiar with twrp coz i ve always used cwm recovery. But dont worry it is also same.

About Root in 05Q

Hello guys!!!, Today I get the new OTA with the firmware 05Q and I install it. I see in the forum a version of 05Q rooted LINK HERE
I only want to ask if anyone know another way of get root actually or if I should wait until our amazing toolkits for 1+1 get updated.
Thanks i nadvance!!! :cyclops:
You can gain root following, This thread. If you already have a custom recovery install, might be easier to install the pre-rooted 05QA. I went the second route.
P.S. That toolkit will root 05QA, just does not have the new firmware to go back to stock.
I have a custom recovery installed ofc, if I install the pre-rooted 05Q I lost all my data and apps? Should I do a factory reset? Thanks for your fast answer mate!!

If you have custom recovery installed. Do a back up first. You should not have to wipe or lose anything.

Really thanks again mate!! I do it, like you, as soon as possible.
Wait guys, all you need to do is flash SuperSU from your custom recovery. That's it, nothing more.
@rraquib, why on earth would you tell him to flash the entire ROM again??

@timmaaa Read carefully I mentioned both option and he was wondering about the pre-rooted version.

You said that flashing entire ROM would be easier, it isn't. All that's need to get root is to flash the SuperSU zip. He's already on 05Q so flashing the ROM zip is completely and utterly pointless. It's like telling someone who's run out of petrol to install a entirely new petrol tank that's full of petrol (when all that's actually needed is the fuel).
It doesn't matter what someone thinks might be the solution, if you're going to answer in the q&a section you need to give the best and easiest solution.
The thing is flashing update-supersu is not working... for me at least. I updated OTA.. After installation finished, rebooted to TWRP and tried to install update-supersuv2.37.zip...
It doesn't show any error, but when I reboot my phone there is no supersu installed ( actually there is one but it's greyed out with android icon and not showing up on application list )

How do I install Clockworkmod on my SM-G920F?

I've tried ROM Manager via Play Store but ROM Manager doesn't list Samsung Galaxy S6 as one of compatible devices. Only S3 is listed. I've already tried Googling it but can't find anything. I'd really appreciate any help.
Clockworkmod & ROM Manager is really outdated and should'nt be used.

I see. It looks like TWRP is the other option. But CWM is one of the requirements for this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/unofficial-xposed-samsung-lollipop-t3180960
Thoughts?
E: Looks like TWRP will do. Where should I look for installation guides?
I tried using TWRP Manager from Play Store but that didn't work. The app is just stuck on the start screen. I guess I really need to use ADB for this.

CWM was written in that thread because was the standar recovery for almost every phone, but TWRP on S6 is a must because the only CWM based (Philz by arter) for S6 is too out dated.
For get TWRP just download the latest from the TWRP official website for S6 and flash through Odin, then you're done.

Sorry to bother you again. But there are two files with the same version on that page. One is "twrp-3.0.2-1-zeroflte.img.tar" and the other is "twrp-3.0.2-1-zeroflte.img." What does .tar mean and what difference does it make? I honestly have no clue which one to use and what to do with them.
E: After a couple of Google results, it looks like .tar is some kind of archive. Although I still don't know how to use it.
OK so apparently, I need the .tar file because that's what ODIN uses. But I would still be happy to know what the other file is used for. I'll post results for anyone who may have the same questions.
Just flashed TWRP using ODIN. Everything looks fine. Also created NANDroid backup. TWRP up and running! Thanks for the help, @TENN3R.

Perfect, yes Odin format is .tar, but if you want just to update your TWRP you can download the .img (new version from site) and flash directly from TWRP :good:
