[Q] P5113 Can't boot to CWM recovery

Followed root guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1657056 to the letter.
Odin loads and installs the downloaded recovery file. When I boot into recovery, it loads the stock android recovery instead of CWM.
I have downloaded the files several times, made sure the drivers are updated and installed and I still get the same result.
When in download mode, it says Custom Binary Download: Yes (10 counts)
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

No joy! Downloaded your CWM recovery on a different pc and after flashing with Odin, I still can only boot to the stock android recovery.
My counter went up one more time. Pure frustration at this point!

I'm having the same problem on my 3113. I tried several times, odin says everything is good, count goes up and still Android recovery.

How to rollback to 4.0.3?
I see folks talking about rollback to 4.0.3, yet no one explains how to do it or where to get the firmware image from! As far as I can tell, I have to have root access before I can flash anything. My device is reporting that it is not properly rooted. What do I do next? I've successfully rooted my EVO and my Galaxy Nexus, but the GTab2 has me stumped.

Same but with Heimdall. Well at least it is awesome Windows users experience the same troubles. This improves chances that somebody has enough rating here to post to the ClockworkMod recovery thread.

Look in the general thread. Links to 5110 and 5100 are in a guide thread that includes returning to stock in the title. The 5113 is in a different thread titled something like 5113 stock firmware

The problem appears to be that Samsung has gotten cute and restores stock recovery during the boot.
This isn't very nice -- they did the same thing with a recent update on their SGS-II phones as well, and I don't remember how I got around it.

I noticed this first on my Thrive tablet, then noticed it again on the 4.0.4 update. Once you are rooted, you can rename (If memory serves) /system/etc/install-recovery.sh to something like /system/etc/install-recovery.bak
Then go back into download mode and reflash cwm recovery.
I incremented my flash count by about 5 before I remembered about this.
If you do not rename that script, by the time you see your boot animation, the stock recovery will have already overwritten your custom recovery..

That´s the trick:
Uncheck "Auto-Reboot" in Odin.
If Odin finished flashing: wait one minute.
Now DIRECTLY boot from Downloadmode into Recovery - don´t reboot into System!
Now enjoy CWM - no need to do this again

[Recovery][4.3][Blaze 4g][Latest] CWM Touch 6.0.3.8

With all the questions about recoveries with the influx of awesome 4.3 romness, I decided to make up some flashable zips.
These are the latest directly from clockworkmod found HERE<< They will flash all roms properly. One touch, and one non-touch.
I will keep them updated if CWM updates, just let me know if I'm slacking.

6.0.3.7 and 6.0.3.8 will both work fine. These are just the latest cwm recoveries for our device. Philz is tweaked a lot.

Just wondering: what is the usual procedure to flash the recovery offered on CWM's website? The recovery is in a .img file. I can't seem to flash it with ODIN since it needs a .tar? I've searched and couldn't find info on flashing the CWM's image file, and the ROM manager doesn't seem to work.
Also there doesn't seem to be a partition SD card option. Which CWM version still offers this option?

You can input the IMG into a flashable zip, like here. You can push it with terminal emulator. Use rom manager. Convert the img to a tar and odin.
Not sure when partitioning was removed, I use a windows program.

Stock Android or Custom ROM?

Hey,
Since I saw how Stock Android looks for the first time, I wanted to get my Tablet's UI (Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 32GB WiFi) to look as nice as the stock Android one. I have already installed the Google Experience Launcher and it's in my opinion just so much better than the Samsung TouchWiz one. But I'd like to go one step further: installing a Stock Android or Custom ROM. Sadly, I don't have any experience with custom ROMs nor with the custom recovery stuff.
From what I heard, a custom ROM would have more features and would be more customizable than the stock Android, so I would prefer a custom ROM - but which? I don't have any experience with any of them and I don't really know much about the risks as the galaxy tab isn't a device that is officially supported by any of the custom roms. I would like to know what you would recommend to me.

If you look in the development section for your tablet, there are lots of KitKat Roms available. If you want close to stock with not too many additional features, I recommend SlimKat. If you want something with more features and customization, but still has the stock android look and feel, I would go for CyanogenMod11 or OmniRom.

I don't care that much about getting a pure stock Android experience than just about getting rid of TouchWiz. I have looked through the Roms available and from what I read and saw, I liked OmniRom and CM the most. Could you please tell me, what the differences between these are?

I have a 7 inch, not 10 inch but the features should be the same. I am currently running Omni Homemade Unofficial (it has multi window.) CM has its theming engine and omni does not. Omni has multi window, OmniSwitch and other stuff I can't remember off the top of my head. Both have heads up I believe. The features should be listed in the ROM thread. I'd tell ya now, but it's kinda hard to on my phone.

I haven't used odin in a while, but there us a download of Odin at samfirmware.com. Just search for your tab and click any firmware for it. Don't download the firmware, but in the instructions for how to flash there is an Odin download. Download TWRP 2.6.3.3 from the link and flash it in Odin as PDA. That one and 2.7.*.* supports KK, but if you will be using adb in windows while in recovery, you will need 2.6.3.3. Before flashing CM, go into backup and chech every backup option and click start. This may take awhile. Then (assuming you already have CM and Gapps on your tab) go into wipe > advanced wipe and check system, data, cache, and dalvik cache. Now you can flash your ROM and gapps. After that flashes click wipe cache and dalvik and reboot.

Why would I need to use ADB while in recovery mode? And I dont habe CM and the GApps installed/flashed, so what do you mean with "assuming you already have [...] installed"?

Not cm and gapps installed. Cm and Gapps zip file on your tab to flash. And in case something goes wrong in recovery (wiped internal SD) adb can save you there. There is nothing wrong with twrp 2.6.3.3.

I've now flashed the TWRP 2.7.1.1 (the 2.6.3.3 version was not available, at least I wasn't able to find it) with Odin from the link provided for my tab on samsfirmware. Then, I downloaded CM and the GApps and put them onto the internal storage. But when I wanted to boot into recovery mode, I didn't get the TWRP screen. I attached a screenshot of the screen to this post. Do you know what could've went wrong?

Looks like you have stock recovery going. Try to reroot your system, odin in your TWRP 2.7.1 .tar file and then try again with your .zips. I always put files on external sd and flash from there just in case something is funky internally

You need to root and install custom recovery (latest PhilZ or TWRP) in order to flash custom ROMs.

Prerequisites: Tablet running stock JB or higher
SuperSU zip file on tablet (this will root your tablet. Download from http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu )
Odin 1.87 on computer (the title will say GT-N7000 but this doesn't matter. Download from http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1068597&d=1337343150 and extract to an Odin folder)
Drivers on computer
In Windows you will need to use Odin 1.87. Make sure you run the Odin exe as admin. Use that to flash the TWRP or PhilZ tar.md5 file. @Android-Andi has a recovery thread in the dev section. Download the file from there. Use the PDA option in Odin to flash it. Make sure that the only box checked is PDA. Do not check any other boxes. When it says PASS, flashing is finished. Wait 10 seconds and unplug your tablet. Boot into recovery by holding in power and volume up (volume up on the 10 inch is the volume button farthest from power and is frequently confused for volume down since they are reversed) and flash the SuperSU zip file. You are now rooted. If this doesn't work or Odin doesn't recognize tour tablet, I can give you Linux instructions.

Debloated the Tablet (Titanium Backup)

So now I'm onto attempting a custom ROM. I'm a bit bored with 4.2.1 and would like to go to the same version of ROM my Note 7 has which is 6.0.1 Marshmallow or even try the new 7.0 Nougat.
I'm a little confused as to what ROM will or will not work. I see a few ROMS worth trying, but there install instructions reference a different Bootloader multiple flashes such as SuperSU or gapps.
Whats the best fool proof method to flash a new ROM with what I have and are there any simple one file ROM/ZIP/ Blob etc.. file that would do what I want?

Thanks. As simple as the process was, as a noob (first time attempting this) I was really concerned about screwing this up and bricking my tablet.
The one you linked to was one of the ones I was considering and hence my question regarding what works with what I have already done. The noob mind (mine anyways) finds a dozen questions at every turn. In this case I would ask the following:
Q-Do I have to use Kang TWRP?
Q-How is it different than the TWRP I used on my Tablet?
Q-Will I need to constantly change TWRP versions depending on what ROM I want to use?
Q-Is there a danger to switching TWRPs?
Q-Doesn't flashing SuperSU after I flash Gapps overright and erase SuperSU or is there some unique way to flash (push?) both at the same time?
Q-Many more I'm sure!
To the noob, almost all the instructions I read appear to be written for someone who as done this many times. The level of detail needed for the novice is just not there or lost between the jargon used, with many steps not fleshed out because the author assumes a certain level of expertise.
I will definitely read these threads as best I can, but in the interim, is there any ROM that are known to be able to be flashed via the TWRP I currently have? The author of the version I used certainly made it seem like it was that simple, load the ROM/ zip file onto the MicroSD card and when in Custom recovery simply use the INSTALL feature to navigate to the file and press a button to flash and ..."BAM!!" you are running a new ROM.

That version of KANG appears to be dead, as the thread has been closed and abondoned by the OP. So no new questions or help there....
Can I install that version over the top of my current version of TWRP the same way I did the first time? (change file to TWRP.blob etc.)

Yes you can.
However Kang TWRP is a xxx.img file. You also can use your current TWRP and flash the image file. Attached you will find an image and a zip version.

Ok, so if I read your comment correctly, I can copy the .img file to an SD card, boot into recovery and flash it from there OR I can fire up fastboot and the same steps I originally did to install custom recovery from my PC to accomplish the same thing... either way I should still have custom recovery, but with the KANG version. Right?

Well crap. I put the .img file on my SD card and boot the tablet into recovery, I flashed the .img file to the rovery not boot partition. All appeared well....but when I go back to see if I have KANG recovery, it hangs anbd says Booting Failure Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x000000000)
EDIT: After I cleaned my pants, I used abd and fastboot to flash the original Blob file using my PC. This restored the custom recovery. I was freaking out for a few minutes.
I didn't change the file name of the kang .img file. Should I have done something different?
EDIT: Successful recovery to Kang2.8.7.2 !! :good::good: I used adb and my PC to send the .img file (renamed "twrpkang.img" for simplicity) and it worked great. I'm a pro..:silly:

Not sure what I did wrong. I tried to do it within the old recovery menu and it hosed it. It found the file and mounted it successfully, but it seemed weird to be within the partition I was overwriting and writing to it. Kind of like you cant install windows while your using Windows...
The new version is much smoother.... Thanks, not to learn about this gapps super SU and how to flash all of these and in what order along with the ROM..as well as this wipe vs format thing...so confusing...

How to root systemless Magisk (5.1 lollipop custom rom)

I keep reading posts that tell me to flash Magisk using custom recovery but my phone says 'update from external storage is disabled' so that's a no go.. And I can't use Odin because it's a ZIP file, not MD5, .TAR, SMD. etc. What else can I do? I've only ever managed to root my phone once and that was using CF AUTO Root which can be flashed by Odin.

And I can't use Odin because it's a ZIP file, not MD5, .TAR, SMD. etc. What else can I do? I've only ever managed to root my phone once and that was using CF AUTO Root which can be flashed by Odin.

Please tell us the specific phone model and rom. Magisk need to be flashed (installed) using a custom recovery e.g. TWRP. TWRP can be flashed using Odin even if the device isn't actually rooted.

My phone model is Samsung S5 Neo and I'm running 5.1 custom ROM. So, what you're saying is, I can flash TWRP using Odin and that will become my default recovery when I press home, volume up and the power button?

TWRP will replace the stock recovery. How did you manage to install a custom rom without a custom recovery?

I managed to find a file with the file type .MD5 and used Odin, plugged my phone in and downloaded with no problem.

That must be a modified stock rom. TWRP will allow you to install any kind of rom without any restrictions.

Sweet! Thanks for the insight. This is what happens when you're a total noob. I find all this rooting and custom ROM larky confusing. I always stumble into issues along the way. So, install TWRP on my laptop and that will have the correct file type to be flashed by Odin, and then use TWRP to flash Magisk.. anything else or will I have any other problems? Don't want to clumsily stumble into a landmine.

What the exact phone model? SM-xxxx
You can download TWRP as .tar.md5 and flash it using Odin.
Best case is to install Magisk on a fresh installation without root/exposed framework already installed.

That's fine as I don't have Xposed or Root access at the moment. My phone model is SM-G903F.

just a hint: there is already an official Marshmallow 6.0.1 release for you device and you probably should look out a newer rom.

Why would you suggest that? In case I reach a point where apps are no longer compatible with my outdated software? Thanks, I might do that. I have stuck with 5.1 simply because I'm preferring it and also Marshmallow have made it harder to bypass security and root the device. I'm thinking it might not be safe now that I know this is a modded ROM, so I should probably look for an official one.

Can I make a Nandroid backup with TWRP? That sounds like it could be useful for any hiccups.

Nandroid Backup and many other features are provided by TWRP

Marshmallow is already fully supported and you will be able to get full control to anything you like. Usually you can trust roms you get at the XDA forum as its a pretty active community and harmfull users would be banned real quickly. The only point is that modded stock rom or custom roms like LineageOS and derivates may not be stable and cause functionality issues.

So I've used this forum to find TWRP for my device https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...official-experimental-twrp-galaxy-s5-t3293379, I'm not sure how to 'Run flash-recovery.sh' because, as I mentioned, it won't let me flash from my SD card.. Any help would be appreciated!
UPDATE: Managed to get TWRP as my custom recovery. Thanks so much for your help! I genuinely had no idea you could flash TWRP onto your phone! I was using the app which is hopeless. Most forums I've found say 'boot in recovery' which is quite unclear if you're not familiar with that..

Can I flash Nougat update onto my S5 Neo? It's originally not supported, that's the only reason I'm asking..
Can I still root with Magisk on that operating system as well and restore from Nandroid backup?
