Can someone please give me a stwp by step on rooting with updated 4.1.2 I can't seem to figure it out. I went to the rooting thread that was updated in march but it is there are so many options it is really hard to figure out what to do. I want to root unlock and put recovery back. I had to flash back to stock cause synergy messed up my gps.

Look for a thread titled "[GUIDE] Root for Jelly Bean 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 OTA ***UPDATED 3/5***" This thread is in the dev section and it doesn't get any easier than that.

I have been reading about guys excepting the update and just rerooting after, so I tried it. Now when I 'rerooted with root 66 it brought me back to vralf 2. I checked for the update again and I get a msg saying com.samsung.syncmlservice has stopped? Now I know the number one rule is don't except updates, so don't preach just looking for help.. Also if I restore and except update then root will It keep the vlraf7 after rooting. Sorry for the mouthful in advance.

When you installed root66, what you essentially did was install a rooted version of VRLF2 over VRLG7. Probably the safest thing to do would be Odin back to complete stock, accept the update, then use a root method that takes advantage of an exploit rather than one that installs a rooted version of a ROM. There are other ways to accomplish what you want, but I think that would be the safest.

I currently have leaked version vrblk3. I only flashed thru odin, nothing more. Am I able to download Verizon's ota update?

So you don't have CWM or TWRP installed?
No, I don't think so. All I did was copy tar file in odin and flash. Nothing more.

Just got the notice in Colorado
I have CWM installed. I guess I need t remove it to install the OTA. What's the best approach?

Why bother? The leaked version and the OTA are the same thing.

This! Leaked is now official...the build number didn't change so there is nothing to gain by taking the OTA.
I understand your point. Even so, if I were to decide to flash back to stock in order to update ota, I am able to just put my phone in odin mode and flash the stock ics Rom over my leaked vrblk3 Rom, correct?

Yes. Depending on which Odin file you flash, it may fully wipe your internal storage (including all your pictures, etc.), so make sure you read before you flash and backup your data accordingly! If you really want the OTA though, why not flash the Odin file for the JB OTA? That is the same thing as going back to stock, you'll just be fully updated already.

Ok, thank you. And as far as using the odin file jelly bean, I new nothing about it. I'm new to this custom stuff and it seems that I need to keep everything up to date manually. If there were automatic updates and what not I'd be more apt to running custom roms.

I got the OTA update on my gs3 to jelly bean yesterday. Is it possible to root it using the file i used to root it in ics 4.0.4? Do i need to download a new .tar file to root 4.1.1 or will using the same file be okay?

Posting this here, I made an account just to ask this question. I've rooted a few of my devices but this is my first time rooting a phone. I followed the link you posted but when I boot into recovery using CWM and try to flash SupersSU_Bootloader.zip I get an E:signature verification failed.
Any thoughts?
No sorry haven't rooted mine yet. I'd try adding in the thread for the root.

Well I fixed it, for some reason it was booting into the normal samsung recovery instead of CWM. I know its kind of obvious but hey....give me a break
For other newbies having the same issue make sure you are booting into CWM and not the stock samsung recovery.
How do you change which recovery the phone boots into?

You don't. The ota was overwriting cwm on boot like the last ics ota was. The directions for the root method are updated to get around that now.

Yup! I saw the update about 10 minutes ago and I am now rooted!

Hello flashers anonymous!
Long story short......I flashed an updated kernal for the version I had. It bricked my phone. I odined it back to life. My phone automatically updated itself to 4.1.2, the rom I was running is based on 4.1.1, can someone send me a link for the .tar file I can use with odin to restore my phone back to 4.1.1? I tried to search for it, but I wasent sure which one is the most current version. Thanks everyone.

Follow the "recover from soft brick" directions. There is a 4.1.1 download link on hotfile. Worst case scenario you reflash everything through odin, and lose you root/unlocked bootloader. But that is easy to get back. Something to note is that goo.im is having problems with their servers, so you may have to google the file names on the threads....
I have the ATT skyrocket rooted and unlocked when I first got the phone in 2011, and is on 4.04. I remember that the post said that I must unroot if I want to upgrade the rom OTA from ATT. Is there any other way to upgrade to the latest stockrom without unroot? I cannot find the post I originally referenced to root/unlock.

^^ what he said. Just get the .tar file from sammobile.com and flash using Odin. You will lose root after this process.
If you want to update using kies (the update is not ota. You have to use kies. ) then s long as kies detects your phone and you have a stock recovery, you should be OK.
However, I believe that you will loose your apps and data with both the methids.. So just use Odin

Thank you very much. I should be able to re-root after the upgrade, correct? Or the lastest 4.1.2 cannot be rooted yet?
I have problem with Odin before, never got anything done with it. Let me try it this time.

Yes you can root the new jb using the same procedure as before.

If your rooted why not just flash a stock rom with the newest update. That will save you the trouble of dealing with Odin.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Trouble? Odin is as simple as place file in pda and click start. I don't see any trouble there....

I meant it more of an hassle. Plug in Odin then uproot do the update then reroot. Just seems so much easier to flash a stock base rom.

Why would you unroot to do the update via Odin. I believe your logic is flawed here. Although I do agree an install would be expeditious via recovery, your argument is flawed.

Just FYI - I was on rooted stock, and just did the update with Kies without unrooting. Now i'm on JB unrooted as a result.
