Mexico Trip Help - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

I'm going to Mexico in June but am trying to get a jump on the preparations. I need a cell phone to use there but am concerned about AT&T and their ridiculous rates for roaming. I'm leery of unlocking my phone but am wiling to do whatever to be able to text and call while down south. Don't need data because I'll get by with Wi-Fi for internet. Any recommendations on ways to unlock or be able to have a working phone in Mexico without braking the bank? Thanks guys!! :good:

If I call AT&T and tell them I'm traveling they wont give the unlock code? If I went to an outside source, where should I buy from?

Just call at&t and tell them your situation.
I went to Mexico last year, call them up and they gave me the unlock code in 2 minutes

Thats boss. Now on to service. So say I called up AT&T for the code, how do I get service in Mexico? I need some data if possible for maps and travel info but not a deal breaker. Need some texting and calling.
I'm only staying for a week, would I be better off buying a burner cheepy phone at wallmart?

Haha seriously though, once I'm unlocked and have the Mexican SIM card in, do I pay for service or is it just free after you buy the card?

haha cool, mm probably the best is to buy some credit in the same place where you are going to buy the sim card. If you buy it in a retailer store it may come with some credit (not that much).
The company that uses the same frequencies as att is called telcel, in one of their stores you would be able to buy a sim card and some credit for it. You can start with 200 pesos aproximately 18 dls that would give you around 60 minutes of talking or 200 texts, and then if you need more just add more credit in the stores.
The data is kinda expensive in prepaid. About the coberture there is 3g on most of the country and LTE on the big cities like Mexico City , Guadalajara or Monterrey, etc.
If you really need to use data there are some small convenient plans that use your prepaid credit; you can activate them whenever you want.
pd. The fares for calling and texting should be actually cheaper, but im not completely sure about which are the current fares :silly:

Oh ok I get it... What's the cheapest way to get a prepaid Mexi SIM card? eBay, in Mex, some other online store?

Im from mexico and i am using the htc one xl from at&t
if you want to make calls and text to the U.S. the best choice you have is to buy a "movistar" sim card. it costs like 10 dollars, and then you can charge it 20 dls/month and it will give you (like 300 min to mexico, US and Canada), a lot of texts ( i dont know how many exactly) but they are a lot, like 200mb to web browsing and do stuff, and (facebook, whatsapp, twitter, and email) unlimited. they give you some other things but i think you dont need to know about them.
all of this is prepaid (without contract) all you have to do is to buy a movistar sim card and recharge it a 20 dls ($200 pesos mexicanos) in a store, you can charge it in OXXOS, FARMACON, WALMART, just in every store, and you will have all those things

Using the Fuze abroad?

Hello all!
I can't seem to get my fuze working here in the philippines..
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Is you Fuze unlocked or are you using you ATT Sim Card? If you are using ATT you needed to tell ATT before you went to the PI. If it's unlocked and you have a PI SIM are you using he original ATT ROM. If you are you need to hand jam the connection settings or get your hands on the HTC connections program.
You will need to unlock your Fuze in order to use a non-AT&T SIM card. Otherwise, you will need to roam on one of the carriers in the Philippines that has a roaming agreement with AT&T. Contact AT&T to enable roaming on your account (roaming charges will apply).
Fortunately there appears to be good GSM and 3G coverage in Philippines. Links for more information:

You're not out of luck at all. Just call AT&T and tell them you can't use AT&T while you are down there and you need to use a local SIM. If all goes according to plan they will give you the unlock code.
To unlock your phone all you have to do is get a local SIM card pop it in and enter the unlock code you just got from AT&T. Your phone will now work at a fraction of the cost to make local calls.
Definitely get the unlock code and local sim card. "Charges will apply" is a real understatement. I was out of the country earlier this year and went with AT&T international roaming rather than a local sim. I came back to a $2000 bill. My fault completely - I wasn't paying attention to my usage. You can check rates on AT&T's site.

While it's not like being at home, ATT will sell you international data plans (iPhone) of 24 mb, 100 mb or 200 mb per month at a rate much lower than just roaming without a plan.

Everyone is correct, call ATT and see if they will give you the unlock code. If not, it is worth it to purchase a code on ebay or spend the extra for the software here on XDA developers to unlock. The ATT charge is $2.49/minute. A local card is really cheap as I remember from the last time I was in the PI.
So do I just call the customer service # from a landline in the PI? Or will I be able to call cust.serv. from the fuze?
Better to play it safe and use a calling card with rates you know you can monitor.

Travelling to Spain from US. How do I get a simcard w/ data for the trip?

Hello,
We are traveling to Spain. Will be in Barcelona and then the Andalusia region. Will I have data access in these areas? What companies provide a SIM card I can use on my unlocked ATT phone?
Do you know how much they generally cost, and what sort of plans are offered?
Thank you for the help!
The main Carriers are MoviStar, Vodafone and Orange.
For 3G the best is Vodafone, about prices and roaming I think is the best you can get

So Im in Jerez spain and everywhere I've been, every phone store says you can not buy a prepaid sim for data. I know they sell unlimited data sim cards that last 7 days for 29 euro. I see them all over the web, but the vodafone stores have no clue about this, they say only minutes! Maybe I need free gps program since I can not use google maps now. arg. Any suggestions??
thanks!
that depends.topons.com
you can have a look .maybe you can save more.
As a follow up:
I got a movifone sim from Corte Englis but could never get it activated right after over an hour I said screw it.
Then I got a YOIGO sim card from a mobile phone store. I think the store was actually Movifon. After spending 10 minutes telling me they dont make a simcard for data, I looked through the plan book and found one. They set up for me then. It was unlimited data, but I think it capped the speed after so much use. Because after a while of Google maps the speed got REALLY agonizingly slow. Then the next day it would be highspeed again.
It costs me like 15 Euro for 2 weeks.

how to buy a nexus s outside US?

[Q] Help! online ordering from Best Buy
I just paid for the Nexus S through Best buy, and now I am afraid that I made a mistake. When I added the phone to my shpping cart, it asked me i I am a T-Mobile contract holder (Which i am not) and I said that I do, which gave me the option to buy the phone at the full price of $529. I am afraid that I am going to receive a LOCKED Nexus S with T-Mobile affiliations and that it's maybe not Sim Free.
Is this the case? If so, how do I order it SIM Free and UNLOCKED Online? The only options on the website was to buy it either for $199 with a T-Mobile contract or to buy it for $529, but again, I am not sure if this is fully unlocked or it is still with a T-Mobile Simcard.

AFAIK they are all unlocked - even the phones sold with T-Mo service.
Will the phone say T-mobile on the phone or connected with it in any way ?
nope, box has a tmobile sim in it but noowhere on the phone does it say tmobile
People at best buy online support are complete fools, they keep saying it's locked, even though twitter and their FAQ say its unlocked.
The whole point of Pure Google phone is that it's unlocked and unbranded
All Nexus S phones are unlocked by default with no carrier branding on the phone or box.
Pricing just varies based on if you want a contract or buying outright.

Well, not everybody have the intelligence required to flip burgers.
Best Buy couldn't even get the ordering live until about 10 minutes late ...
Then I tried to order 3 times; each time I got a vague credit verification error that made no sense.
Plus, they tried to switch me from my $10/mo unlimited 3G data to $10/mo 4G data with a 200MB cap... no thanks.
I was able to order by phone, but the process took over an hour. At least I got to keep my data plan.
Total cost was $250 after taxes and activation fees.
hi folks, is there anyone from from non-US/UK manage to buy a Nexus S>? If yes can let me know how? Especial from Malaysia. Thanks..

make sure your phone operator works with 900/1700/2100 data
I bought two on launch day. The second is unopened. PM me if you want to buy it.
Wow!
I have a G1 and tried to upgrade to the nexus s with my existing 24.99 unlimited G1 data plan. The rep in the store said she was pretty sure I had to upgrade my plan. She said she would try it without upgrading my plan and got almost through the entire process but her system would only allow for the full price option for the phone.
Did you do anything special to get them to let it work with your existing plan??
Thanks

Has anyone actually bought this online?
I'm having problems getting Best Buy's site to let me buy this thing. It keeps getting hung up when I select a plan - just keeps asking me if I currently have T-Mo service and won't let me actually select an answer...
Also, since I'm a new customer, would I be able to sign up for T-Mo's promotional plan (1500+unlimited for 79.99)?
You have to go to the store for starting a new plan.

That's ridiculous - there's not a single Best Buy here in TN that will sell it with a plan. I suppose none do T-Mo. And my local store says $529.99 - available at Bestbuy.com for $199.99.

How can I buy a T-Mobile prepaid SIM card for my US vacation?

Hi everyone
I bought my SGS 4G during my last US vacation.
Coming back to visit (10 days on August), I'd like to buy a prepaid SIM card with unlimited 3G/4G with a local line just for this stay.
I saw s SIM card for 50$ in the T-Mobile site.
How can I do that, if I'm not at the states at the moment?
What alternatives do I have?
I searched the web and couldn't find a clear, easy & cheap solution.
It has to work with my lovely SGS 4G.
Thanks in advance!

Your best bet is most likely gonna be to just get the plan once you arrive in the states. Tmob stores are all over the place so unless your flying into Podunk, Kentucky(no offense to people from the great state of Kentucky) you should be able to find a store within a few miles of the airport. Hope you figure it out and you have a blast in the States.
Just out of curiosity where will you be? Here in NYC t-mobile stores are everywhere & may be in the airport itself.

Hi guys
Last year in NYC 2 different AT&T stores didn't want to sell me a SIM card as I'm a tourist with no social security number. This year my starting point is Miami.

I would contact a store close to where you will be staying in Miami. Tell them whats going on and they will probably be more than happy to help you. Also Walmart sells T-mo stuff so they might be able to help you. IIRC you can save a tiny bit buying from walmart.
Another option is use the Straight Talk sim card program. Its five bucks cheaper and the same service. Im not totally sure of the data connection. Im looking into the type of data connection you get. I know Normal straight talk phones have the same coverage as att, verizon and t-mo. Ill update once I can get a straight answer.
Great, 10x, I'll make some research on the mobile stores around my staying area i.e south beach.

It would be best to wait until you're in the states. You will have no problem getting a prepaid SIM activated from T-Mobile (I am an Event Rep for them). I'm not sure if they offer it in Florida but if you don't really need many minutesthey offer unlimited 4g (throttled after 5gb) & messaging with 100 minutes for $30. I sell a lot of that plan during conventions here in Denver.

Talked to a Straight talk rep the byod sims operate 3g service. So if the T-Mo $30 plan doesnt have enough minutes for ya that is a option.
Hi eb13
That plan sounds like just what I need. Is it limited to a period of time? I found a T-mo store in Miami but it has low ratings.. and probably they won't offer this plan. I'll try contacting them on Monday.
Thanks.

Hi Again
OK, so regarding the T-mobile 30$ plan I found this on T-mo site :
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/monthly-4g-plans
and this one on Wallmart site :
http://www.walmart.com/ip/Tmobile-30-Wireless-Airtime-Card/15443357?findingMethod=rr#ProductDetail
Few things still unclear to me :
1. If I buy it from T-mo, do I have to do it in advance and ask for delivery to the hotel or can I just instantly go and buy it from a local T-mo store I found 15 minutes walk from the Hotel ?
maybe I should order it online and just go pick it up from that store ?
2. Why do all stores in Miami get lousy reviews with "bad customer service", "no parking" and "no one speaks English there" ?
3. Wallmart centers are not near my staying place, so I could order it and get it shipped to the hotel I suppose, but here it says :
"The $30 Unlimited Web & Text with 100 min talk plan works only with T-Mobile Phones purchased from a Walmart store or from Walmart.com"
WTF ? I bought my phone in some local Manhattan store I don't even remember its name.
4. Even in Wallmart site I see I get the activation code via mail - but how would they know my IMEI number?
Regarding the Straight-Talk plans I found this one :
http://www.straighttalksim.com/shop.php
So what I understand from this is that it will cost me 60$ overall (which is twice the T-mo price).
I don't really need the unlimited talk, but mabe it's worth the price comparing to T-mobile service.
What do you advise ?
Thanks !!!
The $30 plan is suppose to be part of the byod(bring your own device) promotion so walmart should be willing to sell you the sim card. I would goto my local walmart and ask but I know each store will do things slightly different.
You also might be able to contact t-mobile and tell them what your wanting to do and ask what they suggest. They might be able to have the item shipped to the hotel in advance of your arrival and you pick it up at the desk when you sign in. What you are getting from them is the sim card it costs like 4 bucks and they refund that to you once you activate.
If you dont need the unlimited calling then I would stick to t-mo. In Miami area the 4g service should be super.

1. No you do not need to buy in advance. You can walk into any Tmo store and buy prepaid activation on site. Choose to activate yourself by phone and the $30 option is available to anyone who activate by phone.
2. Because people are jerks
3. disregard that, I sell these plans to people on a daily basis at numerous locations and in any phone. I have activated these for customers with unlocked iphones (not proud of that).
4. You provide your IMEI when activating buy it's only to make sure you're not going to use a phone that's been reported stolen from retail. (if a phone is stolen from a retail location the IMEI guess into a database)
I highly advise staying away from Straight Talk - just my opinion but there service on every level is less than respectable.

Hi everyone,
Excuse me for bringing back this topic, but I have a similar question regarding this topic. We're visiting California next week as an European tourist. I'm willing to buy the 30 days unlimited web prepaid deal from t mobile, however I saw that it is for 'US residents only'.
Do they check this? Do you have to provide a passport or something?
We only need Internet for 3 weeks so 30 days is sufficient, it's mainly for navigation purpose on my HTC Sensation.
Another question, is the sim a standard one or is it a micro sim?
Hope you can give us the answer! Can't wait for our visit!
Best regards,
Jasper from the Netherlands.

No they do not check it. You do not need to provide a passport. However you may be required to present an ID. It varies. If you plan to get one at a T-Mobile store, you can request a standard one, or microsim. If for some reason you decide to buy it online, it'll come as a standard similar card.

This is one of the most appealing features of this phone that has so far gone pretty much unrecognized. You can take this single model and jump to most major and prepaid carriers.

As long as you are paying full price, you should be able to get it without a Sprint account. It will of course depend on whether the sales person you deal with decides to be a jerk or not.

Exact same phone, the one at Best Buy just comes with an $100 SIM card.

I have the nexus from Sprint and can personally verify it works with a prepaid att straight talk Sim card. FYI the sprint sold phone does not include the Sim tray key.

So you just stick an AT&T SIM card in there and it'll automatically switch to it? Was your phone already activated on the Sprint network? I'm curious since Sprint would tie in with the ESN activation for CDMA. If it's just as simple as putting in an AT&T or Tmobile SIM, then I'm sure getting it!

Yeah it really was that simple. Just put the Sim card in reboot the phone and your good. I had to change a couple settings in the connections menu to go back to sprint but it was relatively painless

I bought a Nexus 5 from Best Buy and I'm an AT&T customer. Yes, the phone will automatically connect to AT&T's network. It took a few minutes to convince the BB employee that the phone would work on AT&T. They also insisted it was store policy that they activate every phone they sell, so I had to pay the $30 activation fee.

Thanks! If you can detail out the settings you had to change to go back, that would be much appreciated!
I can't remember specifics but I had to change the settings here back to LTE a couple of times. For some reason it wouldn't stick after the first reboot. I can't retest it because my straight talk Sim is not active right now. I can assure you it works relatively easily though.

Directed to the two posters above who say it will work on AT&T - how do you know? Do you have confirmation from someone who bought the phone at Best Buy? The listings on Bestbuy.com both say (Sprint) after the name of the phone.

because all N5's sold in North America are the same model, with the same frequencies (D820), the only thing that may have to be changed is the APN.
this is not like other Sprint specific devices like the G2 (LS980) vs the AT&T G2 (D800)
AT&T - D800
GSM 850/900/1800/1900
UMTS 850/1900/2100
LTE 1900(2)/1700(4)/850(5)/700(17)
Sprint - LS980
GSM 850/1900
CDMA 800/850/1900
UMTS 850/1900
LTE 1900(25)/800(26)/2500(41)

That would have been awesome, I don't understand why everybody charges $100 more unless Google really is taking a hit on each one they sell.
Glad you got them to price match, they wouldn't budge for me. Brought them a few receipts where other people did it, brought them the price printed. They just kept telling me it's not the same phone, got to the point where I was just tired of wasting my time with them and didn't want to wait on the Play Store so I just got it at full price.

I don't think Google is necessarily taking a hit but I do think they are selling them just slightly above cost. You have to remember that Google isnt a electronic sales company like Apple, they make all of their profits from there data mining and advertising business. Android is just another medium to collect data and deliver ads. So they could give these away for free and still benefit. However companies like best buy and sprint make their money off of retail sales and cell phone plans. So they are trying to maximize profits that way.
Anyways bummer that they didn't match for you. I guess I just got luck. I walked in not feeling to confident with my play store ad. They were cool but hesitant. After the guy asked his manager he said that they normally wouldn't match the play store but were will to make an exception.
I am in the same boat but for T Mobile. Anyone know if this phone will work for T Mobile as well? I would believe so but I want to make especially if BB is going to charge me an activation fee.
