Need help rooting or rolling it back. - RAZR HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been sitting here for six hours trying to get this thing to ROOT. I just got a Razr HD today. When I plugging my phone into my PC it said something about new files to update so I let it and then I realized it was loading JB and not update my PC drivers. Before I knew it it was half way done. I pulled the plug but it was too late. I had to let it finish. I now have JB 4.1.2. I have tried RSD using GB 4.0.4 and it failed. I tried several HD utilities and they failed. So what am I doing wrong? I really want to get this rooted.

I feel your pain man and frustration, bee through that as a new droid user.
If your moto is bootloader unlocked- done via moto website, yes it does void warranty blabla......, follow this

If you have the retail Verizon version of the hd, then you're stuck.there is no known root method for that phone if you're already on 4.1.2. If you have the dev version or international then yes you can.
Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk 2

Sorry to hear that, but unfortunately its not a theme for the Development Section, its for Q&A.
It could be possible to root if you manage to unlock the bootloader. On international version, this can be achived via the motorola page.
but of course you will lose all waranty and stuff.

[Q] Atrix 4G can i get ICS OTA if i rooted?

ok , so i rooted my Atrix 4g running 2.3.4 . i didnt think i was going to get ICS so i was like ok ...and did it.
however now that i hear that it might come out on the atrix and that because moto was bought by google the chances are higher i was wondering if the root will stop the OTA update and if so is there a way to fix this?????
Thanks for the help i do appreciate it.
If you go back to the stock rom, it will not stop the update.
If you accept the update, you will lose root. If you want to root again, you will have to wait until a root solution is figured out again. And the fact that the atrix is an older phone and the dev community is shrinking, you may not get root again at all.
however accepting the update wont brick my phone? And yes I know its an older phone but im going to wait till quad core phones come out because my phone still can hold up to most duel core devices . and it has the finger sensor. Also I should mention I am still running regular 2.3.4 with moto blur because im one of those odd balls who like it .

Then go with the update...I don't know what you are expecting..blur is still blur, so you won't see many UI changes..
Well its rooted now...and I heard that if you root your phone and OTA update you can brick it and that is what I dont want

It is different for every phone. Most phones won't even receive the OTA notification if rooted.
ugh <.< well if it does actually happen ill figure out exactly how to UN root it and then get ICS and wait till someone discovers a root for that. im sure someone will.
I wouldn't hold my breath for ICS even if Google and Motorola finalize everything by June.
The phone is going on a year old and the ATRIX 2 is probably not going to get the update to ICS in my mind.
I would keep your root and if it does come out then throw a custom rom on and you will be happy because you have ICS and root

i dont think its possible you can get the official ics if you are rooted. need to unroot first.
Still not 100% sure about how to do that anyone have a link?

How to revert Atrix back to Stock ROM Hi Guys and girls, I have put together this guide to help anyone who decides to install a custom ROM (Like i did), but dislikes it or finds issues and wants to revert the phone back to stock again.
I recently installed 'Gingerblur' and had issues with: GPS dropping signal frequently Security functions not working at all Dialpad not responding when used during a call Refused to set date to UK format (DD/MM/YY) Work and play dock not displaying screens as it should Tricked phone into thinking it was a AT&T handset (My handset is on Orange UK) And a few other niggles.
Please note, I am not saying that everyone will experience all or any of these faults, but I had them and it ruined the enjoyment of the phone.
Ok, so here is a list of what you will need:
Up to date drivers USB and PC Charging Drivers - Motorola Mobility, Inc. USA RSDlite 5.3.1 RSDLite5.3.1.msi 7-zip 7-Zip Correct Orange SBF file (Select correct ROM for your network) Atrix Firmwares Superthread (Official Firmware Team of M3) - xda-developers
And you will need the USB lead that came with your handset to guarantee compatability.
Once you have installed the programs above, download your SBF file to a location you can find it on your hard drive.
Once the SBF file is downloaded, open 7-zip and locate the SBF file (name will read something like OLYEM_xxxxxxxxxx.sbf) and extract it to your desktop.
Open RSDlite and select the extracted file, and the 'file properties' box on the right will display all the details about the file.
Turn off your handset (or pull the battery) and press the UP volume button and POWER button together, and hold them both until the phone displays 'Starting RSD protocol support'
Connect the handset to your computer using the USB lead, and the RSDlite should display your handset details. It will either read 'NS olympus' or 'SE olympus'. This is fine, and is evidence that the phone is recognised.
On the RSDlite program, click 'Start' and find something to do for 15 mins.
The SBF flash will go through a number of sequences, and your handset will go on and off as the files are written. You may also hear the PC making the connected/disconnected noises for the USB, but ignore them. Don't mistakenly disconnect the handset or you could brick it.
At the end of the process, you will notice that the phone is turned OFF, and RSDlite is instructing you to manually turn the handset on. Turn it on and it should look the same as it did when you turned it on for the first time.
Please remember.... you are fully responsible for any changes you make to your phone's firmware, and I am only offering a guide to help, not a guarantee that it will help. This is a condensed version of the help I received from das8nt, and it worked for me.
If this has helped you in any way, then please feel free to click on the 'like' button.

wow thank you thiss will come in handy when i want ICS
Wait for CM9
Instead of waiting for Moto to release ICS, just install CM9 when a decent Atrix rom is available, my bet is that it wont be too long.
Still waiting on a decent truly stable non alpha or beta Tom. Any ideas? Or news in the wire

Prob not.... the unlock I don't think has anything to do with the OS. AND if it does you can call and get it unlocked again .( on the off chance)

[Q] Jelly Bean OTA Update Failed?

My OTA Jelly Bean update does nothing but fail. It gets as far in the update as having the little 'Droid with the progress bar underneath, but gets 1/3 of the way and fails every time. I AM rooted.
Tried the following:
Wifi
4G
3G
Factory Reset
Removing SD
Putting SD back in
Updating while rooted (didn't mean to)
Updating without root
Updating while on Temp Unroot with Voodoo Rootkeeper
I'm starting to get aggravated, and I really don't want to have to go through Verizon customer service. Any ideas?

Hi, did you remove bloatware? Possibly the OTA refuses because of this (was in my case....)
Furthermore, attention to how you proceed with the root - in the process of updating I've lost mine - so do check out the psosts regarding root/update, it might work for you

Yes, I did remove bloatware, but when I factory reset, they came back, and worked fine.
Did what 90%+ of posts say. Use Voodoo to "hide" your root while you update, then restore.
Update still failed. Will be calling Verizon when I get home from class today because it's just making me mad at this point.
UPDATE:
Talked to Verizon, and the tech (who is a fellow phone nerd) says that the first step in the update is to check the bootloader. If it's been tampered, it will fail. He also said that if I can pull it back all the way to factory everything, no root, and they can't tell the bootloader has been modified, then they'll replace it. If they see the bootloader's been touched, they're gonna charge me $299.
I have rooted via MotoFail2Go, would a step in that process be to modify the bootloader? Pardon my ignorance, I haven't done any tinkering into real modifications. Although, now I'm gonna go back and play around with my Droid X

I'm having the same exact software. I uninstalled and froze a few bloatwear. Used MotoFail2Go to get my root. So what do we do now??? are you tell me we're stranded unless we beef up another 300.00 for a new device?????? Nahhh all these nerds on XDA someone's gotta have an answer....................right?

Not that it matters much anymore, but with root, if you actually deleted bloatware apps with titanium, or froze them, but didnt defrost them, the update will fail. Also, if you had safestrap installed, the OTA will fail.
Most you want to do with the bloatware is just freeze it. and then remember to defrost it before the OTA.
Gotta be careful.

The bloatware came back and works fine after a factory reset though.
Are you telling me I'm screwed then?

No, you are not screwed. You may have to reload original ICS from FBR process. It is documented on this site. I had to do that not because the OTA failed, but because I lost root.

I have the Dev Edition with an unlocked Bootloader.. is this why my update is failing?
My Jelly Bean OTA gets all the way to the last tiny bit, then right before the end Andy Android ends up on his back with the red triangle over his open stomach, my phone reboots, goes through the update process and shows update failed but I'm running Jelly Bean.
When I try to load the update my self through recovery, same thing happens, but the error shows....
assert failed:motorola.update_bl_backup()

Atrix 2 ICS update failed

Hello, I'm new to these forums and I have tried to find a helpful answer to my issue but cannot, so here it goes. I have an Atrix 2 thats running Android 2.3.6, the phone was rooted with SuperOneClick last year. I updated to 2.3.6 OTA and had no problems at all. The ICS update is out I cannot get it OTA. I can download the update then the phone restarts, it appears to start installing but then stops and a triangle with "!" appears and the phone restarts. Once the phone restarts it says "Update Failed".
I have seen several others with the same issue but I do not understand how to fix it. And I am not sure if my stock ROM has been modified either.
I would greatly appreciate some help, I don't understand what I've done wrong here, Motorola says its because the phone is rooted, I've un-rooted it with no luck...

usually updates fail when bloatware or some other stock apps are removed. I believe the best way to get ICS on your phone is by flashing FXZ. But first we need more info about your Atrix 2. Is it an AT&T branded one?

You do NOT use odin on moto phones.
Please take a look here, it will explain all of the ins and outs that you need to know.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650
Updating to ICS on an AT&T phone even without the bloatware is very easy, just flash the ICS FXZ for AT&T, using the latest version of RSD lite.
AT&T ICS FXZ:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml.zip
You will need to find RSD lite from moto on your own though, as it has been posted in the dev section a few times, and we do not usually link to the moto site since they are like nazi's over there about XDA.

Agreed on the Mot-azi. Im banning them after my next upgrade. A bunch of pigs they are.
On a much more positive note, thank you for making it easy. Ive been away from the android community for the last few years, but man has it grown! Im lovin it. Now only if we could get some better suport from the big app companies.
Has ubuntu ever been attempted in the atrix 2? Now that would be marvelous!

I have it running on my "dev phone" (Galaxy Nexus) right now, and it is nice, but a ton of things are not working yet, so I would not advise trying out just yet. I will try and get it working for the A2 in time, but a few things need be addressed first, mainly that it takes 500+MB of /system space, and the A2 is limited to 475MB in /system, so.... in getting it working, it is a meld between CM10.1 and the ubuntu UI on top of the CM 10.1 device files and drivers, but... to get the 100% real thing ported, will probably not be possible since the a2 has a locked bootloader, and the boot.img is very important to the ubuntu phone os, so.... we will see as time goes on, if I and others in here can get working on the a2 in at least the hybrid with cm10.1 format.
Also you do know that the webtop included with the A2 in 2.3 is ubuntu, right? I have a hack to get all the ubuntu stuff running in webtop, if that is something you might be interested in, but it does not work in ICS. That is why I stayed on leak 1 and never went to the official ICS version, so I could go back to GB for webtop when needed.

I updated mine the day it came out and I had a terrible time with it. The FXZ was not available at the time so I had ATT give me replacement phone. I used 2.3.6 for a little while, then I updated it again. This time though I did a factory reset before updating and everything went great. So I'd recommend doing a factory reset before updating and maybe you will have better luck. Or do as Jim suggested and flash the update yourself with RSDLite.

One other thing that's completely off subject, One thing I don't like about this forum there are too many restrictions regarding spam...although I understand it needs to be completely filtered and not allowed the admins have too many restrictions on this forum. Why should there be a restriction were a new user has to wait 5 minutes between posts? That makes absolutely no since. (BTW thanks to the admins for the 5 minutes between posts I had to kill, I got to mention this)

I guess you did some tweaks with it like installing CWM. You remove it and files associated with it, you can take update OTA with no probs (i was through it and finally could take the update like a noob ). An fxz would be a much easier choice.

[Q] 9.18.79 Fail No Root Or Stock Recovery

Okay to make this easier to understand Ill start from the beginning. I rooted my phone on june 20th of this year. Everything went smooth. I did a backup of my stock system although I didnt load any ROMs or unlock my bootloader. I tried updating to 9.18.79 and I get about 1/4 of the way through, maybe a 1/3 and it freezes, follwed by the dead droid icon and a reboot. I tried temporarily unrooting my device to install the update and I had the same issue. Then I unrooted my phone and delted the superuser backup and once again, the update failed. Ive tried to do a stock recovery from the boot menu only to get the dead droid icon. One of the other things I noticed is that my backup assistan icon is missing all of a sudden (maybe it was removed as an app Icon like the navigation, I dont know) but I still have backup assistant plus in my apps when I go to system settings. My question at this point would be how do I get this update to fully install? Do I necesarily need the update? Will it hurt jus having 9.16? Is my phone incapable of being saved? Before I get bullied about creating a thread thats already adressed I havent seen anyone in the same situation that Im in. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
If you update you won't be able to unlock your bootloader. So it's not really worth it. Nothing major in the update. If you insist flash the stock firmware back on your phone.

I read you can't unlock the bootloader on 9.16 anyway with verizon. But alright. How could I flash the stock firmware back on? Will I be able to get updates in the future like 4.2 if we ever get it? And now Im trying to root again, In motochopper I dont get the option to run.bat file. It just says run, when I click on it and hit enter It says daemon is running. On my phone it isnt saying I have root at all though.

HELP! 9.30.1 OTA (LOST ROOT) Is There a Different way to Gain Root Back?

Ok so heres my first question?........... Is there any possible way of gaining root access through linux for my android ? ....Like running certain commands to do so......I know u have to change permissions and make changes to the android file system......And was wondering since linux uses root in terminals and so on and so forth would it work to access root in linux and maybe use a file manager to open your android system files in linux to make these changes so u may root. .. Instead of waiting for a DEV to create a method or script that will work ... Isnt there a way we can gain this back without waiting for an actual script to release . I rely on my root for a vast majority of my apps and i am lost without it . I know it may be more complex and diffucult for some people but to gain root access back this way ... But it would be great.
I have a working linux set up on my comp already with working adb /sdk installed ..... If anybody can help me with rooting my phone it would be very much appreciated. Im not new to this at all im very familiar with linux and how to use it. i basically need help with the rooting process and what to do when it comes to that.
I do not have an unlocked bootloader if that makes any difference.
Took 9.30.1 OTA and lost root.
As far as i know there is no script/method to root for the new OTA 9.30.1 update.
Tryed rooting already with Linux but my file system wont allow anything to be written to it.. Its Read Only File System. I think it has to be Read/Write
I really hope there is a root script/method released soon if this way isnt possible
Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you
No. Unless an exploit is found, you are out of luck.

I doubt there will be another exploit. This phone is a year old now and most devs are focusing on custom ROMs.

Mostly likely none. Because at this point 95% of people know to protect root before taking an ota. Or just don't take it.

My phone is the not-unlockable one and locked.
I happend to click yes when this update question came. After realizing what was happening, I set my phone to flight mode, and the update downloading is now paused. Is there anyway to cancel this downloading/update process?
I have installed safestrape and backup my stock ROM before this. The worst is that I restore the backup and the update question will be prompted again, right?
Or is there other way to stop the update downloading in progress?
Another question, if root is lost through the OTA update, can I restore the backup through Safestrape and get root again? Or is everything gone?

Once root is lost after the ota has been fully applied, the backup will do you no good as there is a new kernel applied.
As for it being paused, I believe you should be okay. Just because you started the download doesn't mean it's been applied. Freeze the updater apk and reboot. I believe that will cancel the download and with the frozen updater, you won't get bothered again.
You could apply the update if you save root with voodoo root keep but if you ever have to reimage your phone, you will lose root permanently. I'd just hold off and wait and see if an exploit is ever found.

Thanks for the info. I have just restored the backup stock rom and all is good. Installed Root Keeper anyway.
Anyone working on a root exploit for 9.30.1
So is anyone working on an exploit to root this update?? I just don't want to have to keep SBF'ing my Razr Maxx HD back to older versions and reconfiguring all my stuff. For what ever reason, I could not get OTA's. I was rooted(motochopper) and used superuser and voodoo. Protected my root, temp unrooted, downloaded the update, but then it would fail on install. I even tried flashing back to the stock recovery and it failed. So just to see what the 9.30 did, I installed it through Droid Razr HD Utility 1.34...of course I lost root, can't put a custom recovery on it, but my phone seems to run pretty good for a stock rom. So, I'm just wondering.

I had root with the 9.30.1 update. I backed up root with OTA RootKeeper but my phone was acting up so i factory reset it and all went to hell...!!! I protected everything and backed up hoping that would do the trick but unfortunately it didnt save the root like it should have now i sit I regret ever resetting it thats for sure. It was risky on my part playing with the reset option knowing there was no exploit out yet and i payed the price

im assuming your bootloader is unlocked?
if so, search for a flash-able zip of SU. you can root any build, problem solved.
I know our RAZR HD's are old, but there's nothing better out there. At this point, I'm willing to pay cash money for anyone able to find a new root exploit for this dumb 9.30 update. I took all the precautionary steps and have an unlocked phone, yet for some reason as soon as the update applied I lost root. It happened during the last ota and I got lucky that the warranty covered me. Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty. So once again, please find a root exploit and I'll pay you. I dont want to get rid of my razr. Thanks yall

there is no need for a new exploit if you have an unlocked bootloader.
search for a flash-able SU zip or search razr forum for the rooting unlocked bootloader thread.
problem solved, cash payments preferred

I've tried every su time there is in here and other sites. They fail every time. I've tried recovery through twrp and cwm and they both fail. As a matter of fact since I took the update neither one of those will work now either. I'll keep trying new stuff until I succeed or brick this phone. All other devices that are currently available can't hold a flame to the RAZR.

Then are you sure you have an unlocked boot loader? If not, then you are hosed. We're just going by the fact that you posted " Not gonna happen now with a unlocked booty".

I get the "warning, boot loader unlocked" message every time I power up. Used *#*#4636#*#* and checked that device shows root. I took all the precautionary steps before installing the ota, and I was having problems that both 9.20 and 9.30 fixed. Was running eclipse as a ROM before all this went screwy lewy
tried using motochopper (no winning)
All boxers are checked, however when I get the true ending to check my SU, it gives me some bogus message about needing to update SU, however it says I have an HTC device, I'm very confused on this, and don't understand what it is even referring too.
Anyone know what I'm reading about here?
