Atrix 2 ICS update failed - Motorola Atrix 2

Hello, I'm new to these forums and I have tried to find a helpful answer to my issue but cannot, so here it goes. I have an Atrix 2 thats running Android 2.3.6, the phone was rooted with SuperOneClick last year. I updated to 2.3.6 OTA and had no problems at all. The ICS update is out I cannot get it OTA. I can download the update then the phone restarts, it appears to start installing but then stops and a triangle with "!" appears and the phone restarts. Once the phone restarts it says "Update Failed".
I have seen several others with the same issue but I do not understand how to fix it. And I am not sure if my stock ROM has been modified either.
I would greatly appreciate some help, I don't understand what I've done wrong here, Motorola says its because the phone is rooted, I've un-rooted it with no luck...

usually updates fail when bloatware or some other stock apps are removed. I believe the best way to get ICS on your phone is by flashing FXZ. But first we need more info about your Atrix 2. Is it an AT&T branded one?

You do NOT use odin on moto phones.
Please take a look here, it will explain all of the ins and outs that you need to know.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1396650
Updating to ICS on an AT&T phone even without the bloatware is very easy, just flash the ICS FXZ for AT&T, using the latest version of RSD lite.
AT&T ICS FXZ:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/InlineFlashing_Edison_67.21.125_CFC_P3_APBP.xml.zip
You will need to find RSD lite from moto on your own though, as it has been posted in the dev section a few times, and we do not usually link to the moto site since they are like nazi's over there about XDA.

Agreed on the Mot-azi. Im banning them after my next upgrade. A bunch of pigs they are.
On a much more positive note, thank you for making it easy. Ive been away from the android community for the last few years, but man has it grown! Im lovin it. Now only if we could get some better suport from the big app companies.
Has ubuntu ever been attempted in the atrix 2? Now that would be marvelous!

I have it running on my "dev phone" (Galaxy Nexus) right now, and it is nice, but a ton of things are not working yet, so I would not advise trying out just yet. I will try and get it working for the A2 in time, but a few things need be addressed first, mainly that it takes 500+MB of /system space, and the A2 is limited to 475MB in /system, so.... in getting it working, it is a meld between CM10.1 and the ubuntu UI on top of the CM 10.1 device files and drivers, but... to get the 100% real thing ported, will probably not be possible since the a2 has a locked bootloader, and the boot.img is very important to the ubuntu phone os, so.... we will see as time goes on, if I and others in here can get working on the a2 in at least the hybrid with cm10.1 format.
Also you do know that the webtop included with the A2 in 2.3 is ubuntu, right? I have a hack to get all the ubuntu stuff running in webtop, if that is something you might be interested in, but it does not work in ICS. That is why I stayed on leak 1 and never went to the official ICS version, so I could go back to GB for webtop when needed.

I updated mine the day it came out and I had a terrible time with it. The FXZ was not available at the time so I had ATT give me replacement phone. I used 2.3.6 for a little while, then I updated it again. This time though I did a factory reset before updating and everything went great. So I'd recommend doing a factory reset before updating and maybe you will have better luck. Or do as Jim suggested and flash the update yourself with RSDLite.

Yeah, I have already done a factory reset. Still can't get the OTA update to work. So my only option looks like I need to flash it myself.
One other thing that's completely off subject, One thing I don't like about this forum there are too many restrictions regarding spam...although I understand it needs to be completely filtered and not allowed the admins have too many restrictions on this forum. Why should there be a restriction were a new user has to wait 5 minutes between posts? That makes absolutely no since. (BTW thanks to the admins for the 5 minutes between posts I had to kill, I got to mention this)

As long as it's an ICS FXZ, then yes.

I guess you did some tweaks with it like installing CWM. You remove it and files associated with it, you can take update OTA with no probs (i was through it and finally could take the update like a noob ). An fxz would be a much easier choice.

No, RSD is not showing its connected. This error occurs before I even open RSD lite, I have tried opening RSD and then connecting the phone still windows keeps looking for drivers that it never finds.

Maybe uninstall/reinstall the Moto drivers. Also, which version of RSD lite are you using? I think 6 or greater is recommended.

Rooted giingerbread leak available on TBH app

Just wanted to tell everyone that TBH released the rooted gingerbread leak on their app a while ago, here's the steps to install it:
1. Sbf to be completely stock, you must have all the stock apps and be on the 2.4.330, so if you sbf to the .29 firmware, update it to the .330 firmware
2. Root your phone and install bootstrap, don't boot into recovery yet!
3. Install the TBH app (if you don't have it, donate to team black hat to get it) and download the 2 files for gingerbread, there's a part 1 and part 2, don't rename them.
4. Boot into clockwork recovery using bootstrap
5. In bootstrap, flash part one of the update, then immediately after without restarting, flash part 2.
6. Restart, you should get the red M logo and boot into gingerbread, if you bootloop boot into recovery by holding the x button on your keyboard when you turn it on and then hold the vol up+down buttons to unlock the menu, once in the menu do a factory reset.
Rooted GB is pretty fast and stable, haven't encountered any bugs yet, battery life is pretty solid (a bit better than froyo), I'm in the process of freezing apps, its difficult now that they added a lot more bloatware that, I have to figure out which of the new apk's to freeze without breaking anything, just a heads up.
Hope you all enjoy your leaked gingerbread!
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL running Leaked Rooted Gingerbread!
I installed the non rooted version of this and it's been working perfectly since last night. No issues at all so far and the battery life seems better but it's still too soon to tell.
All in all, I'd say this is a great release and appears to be better than Froyo even with a ROM. I'm just currently waiting for a way to root it that doesn't involve me having to flash it again and starting from scratch.
You may wait a long time. ..
Any method that can root this without using TBH's files will require a new exploit for GB.
Dumb question, since I'm currently running a DINC2. What's the bootstrap? I've still got my old D2G, and want to put it to use now that this is leaked, but need to learn some of the terminology over here.
Thanks!

not gonna happen, currently the only way to get a rooted version on the other moto droids (except the OG droid) are to install a rooted version, theres no way to root from within gingerbread.
Hmm... I didn't know that last part there... I guess I should install the TBH version now then before I do any more customization on it. That way It doesn't hurt so much to SBF again.

so basically no need for the TBH root app?
I've seen that posted on some other sites as well since this morning. Apparently it's the same files from the TBH app. I believe you only needed the app initially to download them and nothing else so now you can flash them on your own.
the rooted version on the tbh app was released first, if you know tbh you know that when they have a leak, they like to release it on the app first, then maybe a day or so later release it to the public, when i made this post it was only available on the app.
I've been asking on My Droid World, but I haven't gotten any replies yet. I need the /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks from the new release, because I altered my cacerts.bks to add CAcert's root and now the checksum doesn't match, and therefore this won't install. Can someone send me their cacerts.bks?
There you go.
But this is from stock 2.4.330 version which I presume is what you actually need for the verification to complete.

[Q] Return AT&T Atrix 2 to Stock (2.3.6)?

I am having the same problem with Contacts and with process com.motorola.contacts force closing that many others are having. I had rooted as well as uninstalled bloatware (instead of freezing, yes, I know!). Tried unrooting, reinstalling Yahoo and AT&T apps as suggested, factory resets, everything. Contacts still acts the same; that is, I can get to it but can't edit individual contacts nor get to Contacts Storage. I think it must have something to do with AT&T Address Book, which won't reinstall (says not supported but was there before).
At this point I just want to return Atrix 2 to its stock, 2.3.6 configuration and start all over. Can anyone help me, or is that not "out" yet?
Follow the instructions on flashing the 2.3.5 FXZ listed here (the beginner's guide) and then use the OTA update to get to 2.3.6. Next time make a CWM backup before you try any ROMs! It is inevitable that you'll eventually get stuck in some sort of boot loop.

It's alot easier than it sounds....and im no pro. I was able to successfully flash 2.3.5 to mine that way the first time around following the instructions in the noob thread.
Atrix 2//RebelROM//Tapatalk 2
so let me get this straight....
I had 2.3.5 rooted. I accepted the OTA update to 2.3.6, so naturally, it un-rooted me, although the superuser is still there. I tried the one click method for 2.3.6 after it came out, as I am a total NOOB and was afraid to try it and screw things up. That doesn't work. I tried to unroot it using the same method. Also didn't work. The superuser is still there and denying permissions.
Soooooooo, I have decided to do the FXZ method in the in the noob/general forum. I'm still unclear and afraid about how to do it. Am I supposed to go through the first 11 steps, then do the "replace" step that is added as a note? Speaking of the added note. It says to "move all the the items in it to the stock fxz". The "stock FXZ" is what i downloaded and did in step 1-11, right? I have searched the forums and this was the best place I could see to ask. Sorry for my extreme NOOBness.
Thanks in advance for helping, or just taking the timpe to read my post!

How to stop an OTA update?

Okay first off, i know this is the wrong section. I can not post in development because I am new here, but I am in need of help desperately. Okay so I am rooted on 1.85 and the bootloader is NOT unlocked. Well i decided today to take the update to 4.0.4 before I did research. (Stupid me eh?) Well I start the OTA and then do some research. I learn that the update to 4.0.4 might be harmful to rooted users. So I disconnect from WiFi knowing it will pause the download. Well now I have a download that is just paused in the notification bar, and any time i connect to wifi it will continue the download. While the download is paused, can i unroot and take the update safely? I have seriously been searching for hours on end to find someone with a situation that I am in and i can not.
If you do a factory reset the update will go away. But that would also make you loose root. You should unlock the bootloader, then flash the rooted 2.20 update from the dev section.
Sent from my HTC One XL using xda app-developers app
Yep, get that bootloader unlocked immediately and flash a rooted stock ROM or a custom ROM. Make sure you backup all your stuff with Titanium because the bootloader unlock will wipe your phone.
Also, just so you know, this thread most definitely did NOT belong in development, which is reserved for ROMs and kernels and root guides and the like ONLY. Threads like this belong in Q+A but nobody is gonna kill you for posting it in General.
After the download, you should get a prompt to either Install, Postpone, or you can press the "back" capacitive button to cancel. Cancel should stop the update notifications. At least this is how its worked on past HTC OTAs. I personally can't verify, as I haven't gotten the notification yet. But others seem to verify this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1817429
But if you want to be safe, you should SuperCID and unlock bootloader first, as others have suggested. Pressing the wrong button for the method I suggested above will be catastrophic otherwise (lose the ability to root and unlock BL).
Thanks for your help guys!
I just did a factory data reset on my phone. Honestly, I've gotten myself into trouble with rooting. I really need to read up before i continue with things of this sort. So since i did a factory data reset, am i 100% unrooted? Will i be safe to take the OTA now? Thanks for your help guys!
If you were stock 1.85, and rooted using the one-click or "manual" method (which you must be, if you you are still BL locked), then you are now unrooted. You are either rooted or not, there is no "percentage" of rooted.
What kind of trouble have you gotten into rooting, and what do you typically use root for?
I've been debating on whether or not to just go ahead and install the OTA to 2.2. The only thing I've used for root was for WiFi-Tether and I don't even use that anymore so I think I don't even necessarily NEED root anymore. I'm just tired of the updater telling me there's a new update to install - frankly very annoying. I've been just using the back capacitive button to cancel it. BUT, the last time I did this when 1.73 went to 1.85, I was just stock rooted, no unlocked BL (just like I am now), when I tried to install the OTA, went to that error with the triangle and exclamation point and wouldn't let me install it. I had to reflash to stock RUU because it was giving me a bootloop. I just don't want that to happen again... What does that triangle and exclamation point even really mean? I can't find a definitive answer on it. Shouldn't the OTA just install as normal, but it'll remove root in the process?

BUT, the last time I did this when 1.73 went to 1.85, I was just stock rooted, no unlocked BL (just like I am now), when I tried to install the OTA, went to that error with the triangle and exclamation point and wouldn't let me install it. I had to reflash to stock RUU because it was giving me a bootloop. I just don't want that to happen again... What does that triangle and exclamation point even really mean? I can't find a definitive answer on it. Shouldn't the OTA just install as normal, but it'll remove root in the process?

Red triangle and exclamation point is the stock recovery. This appears if something about the ROM is missing or corrupted. Not sure why this happened to you in that particular case. But installing OTAs on rooted phones is always a crap shoot. Sometimes it works, and you just lose root. Sometimes you boot loop or other things.

That's what I was afraid of. Actually, I remember trying to install the 2.2 OTA a few days ago as well. Same red triangle and exclamation point. This time wasn't a boot loop and I just rebooted again and ever since, just kept canceling the update. Not sure what's going on...

Is the update actually downloaded to your phone? You may need to locate and delete it.
It may be trying to install the OTA from recovery, which makes sense. Don't actually know what happens when an OTA installs.
I've never installed an OTA! I'm always rooted, always will be!!!!
Just to be sure.
I did a factory data reset the night of the problem, been good ever since! I have not done anything to the phone except install a few apps. Should i be okay to take the OTA now? Sorry i just really want to be sure. This is my 3rd phone is 3 months so... no second chances.
SOLVED
Okay, so i took a chance on the update. It worked! I will not be rooting anymore until i read up. Sorry guys if you feel this thread was unnecessary. Just an FYI to any who are worried about taking the newest update after a factory data reset, don't be! Thank you to all:highfive:
Did everyone got an update ?
I still do not see update notification
From beast called HTC One X
It's a little late for this probably but for future reference if you are rooted and want to stop receiving OTA updates remove/rename/delete HtcOMADM_ATT.apk and HtcOMADM_ATT.odex from system/apps, wipe cache and dalvik. If you want to remove "AT&T software update" from the "Settings" then remove HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_ATT.apk and HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_ATT.odex from system/apps, wipe cache and dalvik.

Looks like you will not be rooting anymore for a while now, since there is no method to root the 2.2 update. AT&T / HTC made sure the current rooting method won't work on it. Hopefully, the devs will eventually crack this one too.
I hope you knew that before making the dive ... I would have just unlocked the bootloader and flashed a ROM with the update baked into it to get the best of both worlds. But that's just me. I can't own an android without root access. To reach his own.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying and you are right. The current rooting method does not work with the new hboot. But.... If you have your bootloader unlocked beforehand you can still still get root after taking the OTA... And you can still flash a custom rom afterwards, from what I understand you would just need to fastboot flash the boot.img. I haven't personally tried it because I like staying fairly stock, just seriously cleaned up with some mods (init.d support, wifi/usb tethering, missing apps replaced). One thing I am curious about and to be honest I haven't spent any time researching the answer, what kernel are the roms using that are based on the 2.23 (4.0.4) Asian RUU? I wonder because I know the combination of the AT&T 2.20 (4.0.4) update with the new kernel and radio is working very, very well on my phone! My quadrant went up 800 points and battery life is still ridiculously good! I also have to agree with "I can't own an android without root access" especially on AT&T. Personally I'm good to go until the Jelly Bean update! Decisions, decisions!

I've never installed an OTA, so I wouldn't know either. Honestly, I don't know why one would do that, when the awesome devs here post ROMs with the latest OTAs and root prebaked into them. There are "modded" ROMs and "stock" (or close to stock) ROMs available to everyone's taste.

Right now, I'm running CleanROM 4.5, which is based on the 2.23 RUU. I did install the 2.20 radio, thinking it would work better, since I'm on AT&T. I took a screenshot of the kernel screen for you.

Where was your improvement? Did the increase happen in the aspect/area that directly affects your daily use, or in some esoteric algorithm that the phone all of a sudden processes faster? I used to go crazy on quadrant scores, but now I don't really understand their value/accuracy. As long as the phone feels buttery smooth while lasting 5+ hours of screen time, I'm happy!
Since you're interested in the scores, I installed quadrant and ran it, so you can compare.

Hi, do you think you could point me in the right direction for this? I found the general thread on radios, but am at a total loss about what it means or what to do with it!
You knew this was the wrong section but posted here anyway? Not a good way to start your membership on XDA. First rule of thumb is to search before creating a thread. Google is a great source for information. For future reference, all questions belong in the Q&A section, where coincidentally, this is being moved to.

RSD Lite freezes at 14/21 flash system

Well, i recently installed the MIUI rom to see if the battery bug was fixed, but its not.
So, i was triyng to go back to the ics leak, as always.
But now, i don't know why, when i'm in the step 14/21 the program doesn't move.
I mean, the '>>' is still moving, but i left it about an hour and it's still there.
Any ideas?

Wait, you installed MIUI and now you're trying to use RSDLite to flash the ICS leak? That won't work. Which leak are you trying to flash? You're teetering on the verge of a soft brick if you go down this road. Not good...

Oh crap ^^
Firts i flash the '5.5.1-EDEM-27-MEARET_cfc.xml' with RSD lite. Then, when i'm on 2.3.6 i uptadte something via OTA. And then, i flash via recovery 'Blur_Version.55.28.37.MB865.MERetail.en.06.zip'
So, what should i do now?

Uh oh... you installed an OTA from 2.3.6? Do you know what the update was for? If it was for the OTA to ICS, and you tried to flash a GB .xml or something lower than the official OTA to ICS, you likely have yourself one of those fancy non-FXA'able soft bricked devices...
Edit: If you were on MEARET you may stand a chance to FXZ back to GB, and try to re-OTA to ICS, as some users have noted success with. But, I'm not making any promises in your case...
@Apex, i tried the back to GB from ICS utility and I'm stuck at the dual core screen. I can access AP fastboot however. I was on the stock ICS leak, and i deleted safestrap, and logwrapper and logwrapper.bin files, and upon rebooting i was stuck at boot screen, now after trying the utility I am still in the same position... any help??
No, no. I doesn't installed anything yet. That was the steps that i do to go into ICS Leak, but now, y cant pass throught the first the step. When i flash the .xml it freeze at 14/21.
But, my other problem is that i don't have enough battery, and i think i'm going to the warrancy service.

If you were on the first leak, and tried to FXZ back to GB, you still have a fighting chance. It's only when on the 2nd leak (as was my case) that's there's no known way out of that soft brick. I'm sure Jim or alteredlikeness will see this and figure out how to bring you back out. Sorry, I'm not much help without my knowledge of FXZ'ing back from ICS leak #1. You shouldn't worry too much, I think you're situation is 'fixable'...

Made it to ICS without looking at this thread
I ran into the same issue freezing at 14/21 and failing at 16/21. Being stubborn I continued installing updates.
When an update is ready to install and my phone restart and say flash failure, I would hold both volume buttons and press the power button, once to exit and again to reenter. Next I would scroll to recovery and the installation would continue.
First update 2.3.6 then ICS. During ICS update I had flash failure a couple time but I just redo the button combination the scroll to recovery, thinking everything would be wonderful.
Well I now have ICS installed but my ringtones and notifications won't stick. When I shut down my phone is goes back to the flash failure screen and will not charge automatically while off. These are the only issues I've noticed, I'm sure there is more...
Please help!

Just use the 2.3.6 FXZ through RSD lite. If you want good webtop then stay at 2.3.6, because webtop 3.0 is more like tablet mode and not ubuntu anymore.
Here is a link to get the 2.3.6 fxz:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/InlineFlashing_edison_5.5.175.25_cfc_p3_APBP.xml.zip
All of the FXZ files are here:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/edison/list.php
If you really want to try ICS, then I would go for leak one from 2.3.6 just do not root or install anything while in 2.3.6.
Here are the instructions for that. Again though ICS does not have ubuntu for webtop, it is just android in tablet mode:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1779968
If you like the ubuntu webtop and want to stay on 2.3.6, my hack works really well for unlocking the full potential of ubuntu webtop, that is here:

What do you mean you replaced the boot image? please give me a link to the thread you go that from... that is quite disturbing.
What I need you to do is to flash the 2.3.6 fxz file with RSD lite, and watch each step and make sure you get a PASS at the end, if not you might be failing in one of the steps, I think there are like 18 steps or something in the AT&T FXZ. I really need to know which step it is failing on, it should be something like step 3/18 or something like that... I really need to know that or if it goes all the way to the end and say PASS.
If you can grab a screen shot of the error or PASS that might also help as well.

Yeah not the best idea. That ONLY should apply to NON-ATT phones, all you just did was put the 2.3.5 boot image on the 2.3.6 bad flash, you are still not whole. You may not be able to get this all right, after doing that, not easily at least... those instructions were out WAY before we had an official 2.3.6 FXZ, which is what you should be using.
I still need to know where RSD is failing, that is crucial to know what is happening.
From here on, if you want my help, DO NOT do anything unless I ask you to please!!! I am one the devs on this phone and our resident expert here. I am very meticulous, but I will get you back but you need to take this one step at a time, and do only what I ask and report back.

Yeah unfortunately you are screwed, sorry to say. The white LED means it is dead, no bringing it back. That is why I was trying to figure where things were going wrong, rather than having you risk further issues.
You might be able to find an atrix2 with a broken screen cheap on ebay and just put the good motherboard from that in your phone, and get yourself back up and running, I have seen them for 50-100 USD on ebay. There are instructions on how to replace the screen in the general section.

Hello, I am sorry if I am hijacking this thread but that is not my intention. I have a similar situation here that I need help with. I just bought a used Atrix 2 yesterday and I am unable to use that.
It is running the following:
Android Version: 2.3.5
System Version: 55.11.11.MB865.ATT.en.US
Build Number: 5.5.1-175_EDFFW1-11
It was in factory reset after mode so i followed the instruction to register with google and my gmail added. But when go to contacts, it keep rotating to open AT&T address book and never comes out of it. So I cannot use my google contacts and has to dial the numbers every time (sucks). Secondly, I called AT&T about the address book problem and was told that is not their problem and asked me to update the Android. I tried updating endlessly but the phone always says 'The software is upto date and no update is necessary!" really?
I called at&t again w/o much success. Then I called Motorola and was told that the phone is running a strange unofficial (really, again?) android version that they cannot help either.
I did confirm the phone is not rooted.
Now, I have a beautiful looking phone that i cannot use. I am not familiar with rooting and all sorta things and can you please help me so i can use this phone?
Thanks a ton.
